Ralph E. Mathieu, 69

Ralph E. Mathieu, 69, of Winchendon, retired owner and operator of Mathieu Ford in Winchendon, died Aug. 2 in the Worcester Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Winchendon, April 11, 1931, son of the late Joseph and Beatrice M. (Jamieson) Mathieu. For the past 16 years, he and his wife wintered in Lajitas, Texas. Mr. Mathieu was a 1949 graduate of Murdock High School in Winchendon and was a 1953 graduate of Holy Cross College.

He was owner and operator of Mathieu Ford in Winchendon for 42 years prior to his retirement in 1995. He and his son Mat owned and operated Terre Aride, S.A., a business active in the reforestation of Haiti. He was a licensed pilot and flew private planes all over North America. He was a world traveler and historian and former member of both the American Archaeology Society and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Winchendon and was an ardent golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann E. (McGourty) Mathieu, originally from Worcester; two sons, Ralph G. "Mat" Mathieu of Jacksonville, Ill. and Tighe J. Mathieu of Winchendon; six daughters, Carol M. Nyffenegger of Marblehead, JoAnn Mathieu of Miami, Fla., Lynn M. Saunders of Bremen, Maine, Christine M. Hopkins of Madison, Conn., Elizabeth A. Mathieu of Agoura Hills, Calif. and Tracy A. Mathieu of Washington, DC; two brothers, Robert J. Mathieu of Westboro, and Joseph A. Mathieu of Putnam, Conn.,12 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Aug. 5 and burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Winchenden. Contributions may be made to the Ralph E. Mathieu Scholarship Fund for Murdock students, c/o Colonial Co-operative Bank, 1 School Sq., Winchendon, MA 01475.

William J. Molumphy, Jr., 84

William J. Molumphy, Jr., 84, formerly of the John Bertram House, died Aug. 7 in the Devereaux Nursing Home in Marblehead.

He was born in Unionville, Conn., the son of the late William J., Sr. and Jane L. (Hurley) Molumphy. He was raised in Hartford, Conn.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps and had received medals that included the Bronze Star.

Following his discharge, he was an accountant with General Electric for many years until his retirement in the late 1970s. Among his many interests, he enjoyed playing golf.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Anne Molumphy of West Haven, Conn. He was the uncle of Suzanne McEvoy of Salem, Dianne McEvoy of Norwalk, Conn., Melissa McEvoy of Southbury, Conn., Andrea Barosky of Orinda, Calif., Elizabeth Molumphy, Mary Jane Molumphy, and Eileen and Paul Molumphy, Jr., all of New Haven, Conn. He was grand uncle of Grace and Dillon Barosky or Orinda, Calif. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Molumphy, and a sister, Grace McEvoy.

Graveside services were held Aug. 9 in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Edward S. Gurman, 85

Edward S. Gurman, 85, of Marblehead, died July 22 after a lengthy illness in the Father Hudson Home in Elizabeth, NJ. He was the husband of the late Anne E. (Bikofsky) Gurman.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H. and had lived in Marblehead since 1950, and previous to that lived in Lynn.

From 1934 until 1969 he was the manager of the former Joseph P. Manning Co. of Salem.

He was an Army Air corps veteran of World War II, a member of the Jewish War Veterans, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a past treasurer of the Interfor Club of Lynn, and a member of Congregation Ahabat Sholom In Lynn.

He is survived by a son, Michael Gurman of Marblehead; a daughter, Diane Goldstein of Roselle Park, N.J; two sisters, Ruth Katz of Danvers and Ida Kalishman of Florida; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Amanda Goldstein. Funeral services were held July 25 and burial was in Congregation Ahabat Sholom Memorial Park, Danvers.

Expressions of sympathy may be donated to the Jewish Community center, c/o Interfor Club Scholarship Fund, 4 Community Road, Marblehead, MA 01945.

Patrick Colantuno, 75

Patrick Colantuno, 75, of Lynn, died July 20 at Union Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Lynn, he was a lifelong resident of the city, and was the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Cardillo) Colantuno.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II.

For many years, Mr. Colantuno worked as a bus driver for the M.B.T.A. and retired 20 years ago.

He leaves one brother, Joseph J. Colantuno of Marblehead; one sister, Florence Olson of Lynn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also brother of the late Americus Colantuno, Ralph Colantuno and Adelina DeCarlo.

Funeral services were held July 18 and burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lynn.

Esther Sandler

Esther (Pitcoff) Sandler, 96, of Swampscott died Nov. 26 in a local nursing home.

She was the wife of the late Benjamin H. Sandler.

She was born in Russia and had lived in Swampscott since May. She formerly lived in Danvers, Lynn and Lawrence.

She grew up in Salem, daughter of the late Chaim and Briena (Linsky) Pitcoff and graduated from the Beverly School for the Deaf in Beverly.

She leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Beatrice and Sidney Lipsky of Swampscott, Clara and Edwin Sandler of Needham.

She was the mother of the late Irving Sandler.

She also leaves eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 28 and burial was in the Sons of Israel Cemetery, Lawrence.

Virginia DeWolf Agnew, 91

Virginia DeWolf Agnew, a longtime Brookline educator, died at the New England Deaconess Hospital June 10, 1997.

She was 91.

She leaves a son, John D. Agnew.

Mrs. Agnew, of Brookline, was born in Chicago and grew up in Chester in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.

She graduated from Boston University, and worked for almost 40 years first as a teacher, then as assistant principal at the Pierce School in Brookline.

Mrs. Agnew retired in 1970.

After her retirement, she began a new career of volunteering, and spent countless hours caring for cancer patients at the New England Deaconess Hospital.

She also served on the board of directors of the Friends of the Hospital.

In a Boston Globe article dated Sept. 21, 1980, Mrs. Agnew was singled out for her volunteering efforts.

The article named Mrs. Agnew as "charming and attractive," and referred to her "one of the most charming and solicitous people that hospital personnel and patients" had ever met.

Mrs. Agnew was married to the late Brigadier General John H. Agnew, who served as major general for the Massachusetts National Guard.

The couple met in 1932 when Mrs. Agnew's father was executive secretary to former Massachusetts Governor Joseph Ely and Mr. Agnew was adjutant to the governor.

Mrs. Agnew was remembered by friends as a cheerful, helpful woman who was a true lady.

She was a precise woman and when she planned, for example, a reception at the Pierce School, she would make sure to have the most proper linens and silver.

At her funeral service, several of her former students and fellow teachers were there, including a father and son who both were her students.

Mrs. Agnew also enjoyed playing bridge.

Mrs. Agnew served on the board of the Boston University Women's Council and the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association. She was a past president of Norfolk County Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of the United Parish in Brookline.

J. Frederick Nelson, 93, former Brookline Historical Society Treasurer

J. Frederick Nelson, 93, formerly of Brookline, died March 22 in Venice, Fla.

Mr. Nelson had been a long-term resident of the Edward Devotion House before retiring from the John Hancock Co. and moving to Brewster on Cape Cod.

Mr. Nelson had served as treasurer of the Brookline Historical Society and was a member of the Masonic Grand Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth D. Nelson, their three sons, Robert B. Nelson of Ventura, Cal., Peter D. Nelson of New York City, John F. Nelson of Northfield, Mass.; and his sister, Victoria Ervin of Portland, Me.

He is also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marguerite Delany, former Town Meeting member

Marguerite S. (Shamon) Delany, a former Brookline Town Meeting member who was past chairwoman emeritus and past president of the Brookline Republican Town Committee, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital June 1, 1997.

She was the daughter of the late Judge Elias F. Shamon, who served in the municipal court in Boston.

Judge Shamon was the first Lebanese judge in the United States, according to Mrs. Delany's husband, Luster T. Delany.

Mrs. Delany was born in Boston and graduated from Notre Dame Academy and Lesley College.

After she married Luster Delany, the couple moved to Brookline in a home that they had built.

She worked for many years as a first and second grade teacher in the Newton Public Schools.

Mrs. Delany was deeply involved in local, state and national politics.

"She was vibrant and extremely involved," her son, Elias S. Delany of Brookline said last week.

"She was a hard-working woman who felt a sense of civic obligation."

One of the first political campaigns she worked on was the presidential campaign of Dwight Eisenhower, her son said, including putting together a reception for Eisenhower at the former Boston Garden.

More recently, she attended the inauguration of President George Bush.

Among her local activities, Mrs. Delany was past chairman emeritus and former president of the Brookline Republican Town Committee, former president of the Brookline Women's Republican Club, former Brookline Town Meeting member, and associate member of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee.

She was an ACE of Clubs member, vice president of the Women's Italian Club of Boston, and a member of the junior guild of Catholic Charities of Boston.

She was on the board of trustees of Lesley College.

Mrs. Delany enjoyed gardening and was extremely devoted to her son and husband.

Her son recalled last week that his mother would travel long distances to watch him play hockey in college and in a semi-professional league.

"Despite all her activities, the most important thing to her was my father and I," Elias Delany said.

Mrs. Delany was the wife of Luster T. Delany of Brookline and the mother of Elias S. Delany of Brookline.

She was the daughter of the late Judge Elias F. Shamon and Helena M. (Rappazarda) Shamon.

Donations in Mrs. Delany's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 654 Beacon St., Boston, MA 02215.

Elizabeth Argus: Licensed practical nurse

Wednesday, August 21, 2002

Elizabeth M. (Messier) Argus of Brookline died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at her home. She was 77.

Born in Brockton, she lived in Pembroke before moving to Brookline several years ago.

She was a graduate of Brockton High School and attended Simmons School of Embalming.

Mrs. Argus was a licensed practical nurse and was licensed by the state of Massachusetts as a nursing home administrator.

Wife of the late James G. Argus, she leaves her children, James W. Chupaila of Liverpool, N.Y., Linda Morris of Pembroke and Sandra Garniss of Brookline; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral was held Friday, Aug. 16, from the Faggas Funeral Home, Watertown, followed by services in the Greek Orthodox Church Taxiarchae.

Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to the American Lung Association.

Donna Bradley: Former Brookline resident

Wednesday, August 21, 2002

Donna M. (Mahon) Bradley of Tilton N.H., formerly of Brookline, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002.

She leaves her husband, Roy A. Bradley; her children, Corey F. and Wayne T. Bradley, both of Tilton, N.H.; and her sisters, Dorothy Heffernan of Chestnut Hill, Pauline Mahon-Stetson of Reston, Va., and Claire Langdon of Marshfield.

She was the sister of the late Carol A. Riley.

A funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 14, from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, Brookline, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Lawrence Church, Chestnut Hill.

Burial was private.

Donations may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Services Division, 425 Reservoir Ave., Manchester, NH 03104.
