Jean P. (Powers) Steele, 78

Jean P. (Powers) Steele, 78, of' Marblehead, died Aug. 8 at Salem Hospital. She was the wife of H. Parker Steele of Marblehead with whom she shared more than 28 years of marriage.

Born in Marblehead on Feb. 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Snow) Powers. Mrs. Steele graduated from Marblehead High School, class 1940.

Following her graduation from high school, Mrs. Steele attended beautician school in Boston. She was the owner of the former Jean's Beauty Shop in Marblehead, where she worked as a beautician for many years.

Mrs. Steele enjoyed the Marblehead Senior Citizen Center, where she was a very active member.

In addition to her husband, she will be deeply missed by her daughter, Brenda Donawa of Marblehead; her son, Ronald Borden of Marblehead; two grandchildren, Michael and Brendon Donawa, both of Marblehead; one brother, Norman Powers of Marblehead, and one sister, Marjorie Girard of Marblehead. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Aug. 11 in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Steele's memory to the Angel Memorial Animal Hospital, 350 So. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.

John Joseph "Jack " Linehan, 70

John Joseph "Jack " Linehan, 70, of Marblehead, husband of Sheila A. (Scanlon) Linehan, died unexpectedly Aug. 10 at Salem Hospital. He was born in Cambridge, the son of the late Bartholemew and Mary (Carroll) Linehan. He was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1948 and attended Boston University. He served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict He was employed for a time by John Hancock Life Insurance Co. before becoming involved in the automobile industry. He was currently vice president of Harbor Medical Evaluations in Marblehead. Jack was a member and featured soloist with the St. John's Fatima Club and its choir, of Peabody. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Brian John and his wife Jennifer Hamilton Linehan of Marblehead; two brothers, Robert Linehan of Peabody and Walter Linehan of Pittsfield. He was also the brother of the late Rev. William, Paul and Francis Linehan, and his sister, Mary. Funeral services were held Aug. 14 and interment was in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

John Chisholm, Sr., 83

John Chisholm, Sr. was born on November 21, 1916 in Marblehead. His grandfather, William Chisholm, was a prominent sea captain, and his father, William Chisholm, was an inventor who owned one of the first automobiles in Marblehead. John had a life-long love of sailing and things mechanical.

John's two older brothers died at early ages. When John's mother's sister died in the early 1920's, her three boys came and lived with John's family on Bowden Street in Marblehead for several years until their father re-married. The last survivor of those three boys, William Decatur Tasker, spoke at John's memorial service on May 17.

In the 1930's, John traveled by bus to Key West to help a friend sail his boat back to Marblehead. In one of the great adventures of his life, they shipwrecked in a storm off the coast of South Carolina.

John studied mechanical engineering at Tufts University in Boston. He worked at the Submarine Signal Company, Arthur D. Little, and MIT. He loved the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, and through the Gilbert & Sullivan society in Boston met Elda Digiuni. They were married in 1946. Together, they built a stone house in Marblehead on Sunset Road overlooking Salem Harbor.

Daughter Jaclyn Elda was born in 1950 and son John Dana was born in 1954.

In 1959, John took a job with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in West Palm Beach. He drove his family to Florida in two cars with rabbit Peter and dog Rexie. John and his family were active in the Episcopal Church Bethesda-by-the-Sea on Palm Beach.

John took his family on a vacation to Cuba right before the Castro revolution. They flew in a propeller plane from Key West to Havana. One week into their stay, all Americans were ordered to leave the country.

His half dozen patents in the field of heat transfer were a great source of pride. His house was always filled with temperature measurement equipment. It wasn't unusual for him to use the wind tunnel as a dinner table.

In 1996, to celebrate his 80th birthday, he and his son went on a cruise in Tahiti, though John had started to show signs of Alzheimer's disease.

John died peacefully, surrounded by his children. He was unable to move or speak, but they know he was able to feel and hear them.

On June 2, daughter Jackie, her husband Jimi, son John Dana and his partner Mike traveled to Marblehead to scatter his ashes, at Waterside Cemetery at the Chisolm family plot, on the sea, and on the water near the stone house at the end of Sunset Road. Cousins Buck and Bud Grader and their families parrticipated in the scattering.

Herbert F. Randall, Was an engineer

Herbert Forbes Randall, 92, of Marblehead, died June 7 in his home. He was the husband of the late Edna (Hyam) Randall.

Mr. Randall was born in Cambridge, son of the late Irwin and Annie (Rice) Randall, He graduated from Annapolis Royal High School in Nova Scotia, Canada, and went on to graduate from the Wentworth Institute in Boston.

He worked as an engineer for Quincy Market Cold Storage, where he was employed for over 39 years. He later went to work for the Salem Five.

Mr. Randall was a member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Marblehead.

He leaves his daughter-in-law, Joan Randall, and his grandson, Philip Randall, both of Ellington, Conn. He was pre-deceased by his son, Kenneth F. Randall.

Graveside services were held June 12 in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Randall's memory to a charity of choice.

George W. Crowley, Patent attorney

George W. Crowley, 79, of Marblehead, a local patent attorney for 49 years, died June 4 at Salem Hospital.

Mr. Crowley was born in Salem, graduated from Salem High School in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Boston College in 1942. He began his career in engineering with Sylvania Electric Products.

During World War II, Mr. Crowley served as a field engineer assigned to the U.S. Navy, installing the original Raytheon radar on American warships. He went on to serve as senior development engineer at the U.S. Air Force Laboratory at MIT., following which he became a patent advisor to the Office of Naval Research.

After earning his L.L.B. degree at Boston College Law School in 1951, Mr. Crowley joined the Electronics Division of CBS, Inc., heading the patent department. While at CBS, he wrote the patent for an innovative design critical to the development of the color television picture tube.

In 1956, Mr. Crowley became associated with the patent law firm of Kenway and Jenney in Boston, where he remained a partner from 1958 to 1988. Among his most notable cases was his successful defense of the CBS color tube patent, culminating in a major legal victory before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977.

For the past 12 years, Mr. Crowley continued his patent law practice in Marblehead, establishing the firm of Kenway and Crowley with his long-time partner, the late Herbert P. Kenway.

Mr. Crowley was a member of the Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead for more than 40 years.

The son of the late George I. and Alice (Kenneally) Crowley, Mr. Crowley is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Borek) Crowley of Marblehead, son Peter Crowley, daughter-in-law Susanne Snow, daughter Attorney Ann Crowley, son-in-law Scott Dunbar, all of Beverly, and six grandchildren, Alex, G. William and Douglas Dunbar; Matthew and Katherine Crowley, all of Beverly, Lauren (Carusi) Consolazio and her husband Brian Consolazio of Hamilton and his brother Robert J. Crowley, retired Salem acting fire chief. He was predeceased by his brothers James and Philip and sisters Mary Crowley and Louise Jersyk.

Memorial services were held June 8. Should friends desire, donations may be made in his memory to the George W. Crowley Scholarship Fund, St. John's Preparatory School, 72 Spring St., Danvers, 01923.

Louis Sacks, 83

Louis Sacks, 83, of Marblehead died Aug. 10. He was the husband of Frances (Cohen) Sacks. He was born in Revere, graduated from Revere High School, Colby College in Maine, and received his Masters in Education from Boston University.

Mr. Sacks was a language teacher and assistant principal at the Garfield Jr. High School in Revere, retiring in 1981. He taught school for 33 years in Revere. He was a captain in the Army during World War II, serving with Headquarters Command, Military Government for Germany. He was with the first troops at the liberation of Berlin.

He was a past president of the Revere Teachers Association, a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, B'nai B'rith, and the Auxiliary of the Jewish Rehabilitation Center for Aged of the North Shore in Swampscott. He was a member of the board of directors and served as secretary of the board of directors of Temple Israel in Swampscott. Also he was chairman of the Temple Israel Religious School.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Steven Sacks of Los Angeles, Calif. and Kenneth Sacks and his wife Maria of New York City, N.Y., and Provincetown; a brother, Frank, and his wife Betty Sacks of California. He was the brother of the late Dorothy Rothenberg. He also leaves nieces and nephews.

Services were held Aug. 14 and burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Peabody.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be donated to Research Fund, American Parkinson's Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., #40, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946, to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923, or to Temple Israel.

Mary Elizabeth Irene Gagnon, 81

Mary Elizabeth Irene Gagnon, 81, died Aug. 9 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H., where she had been a resident since 1996. The daughter of the late Edward Anselme and the late Elizabeth (Fortin) Gagnon, Miss Gagnon was a longtime resident of Marblehead, where she was born in 1919 and was graduated from high school in 1937. Following graduation from the Salem Normal School in 1941, she taught for a few years in Vermont, and in 1951 she received her masters degree from Boston University. Miss Gagnon taught school in the Beverly schools for many years, retiring to Gulfport, Fla. in 1976. Her career in education included a 1959-1960 stint at the American Army Base School in Okinawa. For many years, she maintained. a summer home at Hampton Beach, which became her permanent residence in 1992.

Miss Gagnon was predeceased by her siblings, Roland, Grace, Romeo, John, Raymond, Mrs. Ida Jalbert, Mrs. Albertine Belanger; a niece, Catherine Gagnon, and a nephew. Donald Pepper.

In addition to several grand and several great-grandnieces and nephews, Miss Gagnon is survived by a sister, Mrs. Flora Pepper of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Olive (Glass) Gagnon of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephews and nieces: Robert Jalbert of Salem, Mrs. Ella "Cindy" Gordon of Oregon, Mrs. Louise Hedding of Phoenix, Ariz., James Gagnon of Peabody, Warren Pepper of St. Petersburg, Fla., Raymond Belanger of North Hampton, N.H., Mrs. Doris Pearson of Billerica and Albert Belanger of Brentwood, N.H._

Funeral services were held Aug. 14 in Marblehead and Miss Gagnon was buried with her parents in St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem. Donations in Miss Gagnon's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, 1 Kendall Sq., Cambridge, MA 02139-1562.

Alyce MacTurk, 100

Alyce (Gallagher) MacTurk, 100, died Aug. 2 in the Columbia-Greene Long Term Care Facility in Catskill, N.Y. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. MacTurk.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Feeley) MacTurk.

She received her education in the Salem school system and was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1918. She was formerly of Marblehead.

Mrs. MacTurk was a long time volunteer at the Salem Hospital, a girl scout leader for the Salem Girt Scouts and a member of the Essex County Council.

She is survived by one daughter, Eileen M. Court of Cairo, N.Y.; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be held in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead, at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be in Annunciation Cemetery in Danvers. As requested, there will be no visiting hours.

Charles J. Fleming, 92

Charles J. Fleming, 92, husband of Mary Louise (O'Brien) Fleming, a longtime Marblehead resident, died Aug. 6 in Blueberry Hill Nursing Home in Beverly following a brief illness.

The son of William Richard and Hannah (Daly) Fleming, he was born and educated in Marblehead. Mr. Fleming was a World War II Army veteran. He wad been employed by the North Shore Petroleum Company and operated Fleming's Garage in Marblehead for many years.

He was an active parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Marblehead and enjoyed baseball.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fleming is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Nancy O'Brien of Hamilton and Florida; two nieces, Kathleen Daly of Hamilton and Deborah May of Peabody; and a nephew, Eric O'Brien of Bedford, N.H.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William Richard and Wallace Fleming; and two sisters, Mary Dumas and Ruth Fleming.

Funeral services were held Aug. 9, and interment was in Star of the Sea Cemetery, Marblehead.

Elizabeth Grieco, 92

Elizabeth Grieco, 92, of Marblehead, died Aug. 2 at Salem Hospital after a short illness. Born in Easthampton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas F. And Caroline E. (Shulda) Butterworth.

She was the wife of the late John Grieco.

Mrs. Grieco was educated in the Amherst schools and then went on to graduate in 1924 from the Salem Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at Salem Hospital.

Mrs. Grieco was a member of the Salem. Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association; she was a volunteer in the American Red Cross Blood Program; a member of the Marblehead Council on Aging, and a member of the choir at the Tabernacle Congregational Church in Salem.

She is survived by her son, Stephen A. Leclerc of Escondido, Calif.; her daughter, Carole L. Barry, of Salem; a niece, Barbara Rowell of Bethel, Vt.; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 4, and interment was in Waterside Cemetery. Memorial remembrances may be made to The Marblehead Council on Aging, 10 Humphrey St., Marblehead MA 01945.

Martha Rose (Thompson) McCanne

Martha Rose (Thompson) McCanne of Marblehead and Old Lyme, Conn., daughter of the late Dr. William Wallace Rose and Mary Bird Rose, died peacefully Aug. 5. Born June 14, 1917, in Bridgeport, Conn., she graduated from Lynn English High School, Syracuse University class of 1939, and received her master of science degree in speech from Emerson College, where she was assistant professor of speech therapy from 1958-1964. She taught English at the American School for Girls, Istanbul, Turkey, from 1964 to 1967, and was coordinator of speech and hearing services in Bristol, Conn., from 1967 to 1971. With her late husband, Lee McCanne, she lived in Rochester, N.Y., before settling in Old Lyme. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, the Old Lyme Country Club, Emerson College Alumni Association, and the Old Lyme Women's Exchange.

With faithful optimism and a genuine love for all, Martha engaged everyone she met. She wove a bond of human love and friendship around herself and into the lives she touched.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Joe Thompson and his wife Edie of North Kingston, R.I.; two daughters, Holly Beverage and her husband Lyford of Pittsfield, Maine and Carol R. Thompson and her husband Chuck Scheffreen of Marblehead, and the family of Roy and Laurie McCanne, of Pueblo, Colo. She was the loving grandmother of Lyford Beverage, Jr., Martha Black, Robert Beverage, Nancy Hughes, Scott Beverage, Katie, Molly and Sarah Thompson, Noah Feldman, and Rachel Palleschi; and great-grandmother of 12. She also leaves her dear brother, David D. Rose. and his wife Margaret of Seattle, Wash., and several loving nieces and a nephew.

Memorial services were held Aug. 9 in Marblehead. A second service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, Two Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT 06371, North Shore Regional Dialysis Center at Beverly Hospital; Ferry Beach Park Association, 5 Morris Ave., Saco, ME 04072, or a charity of your choice.
