Elmer L. Naugler
July 20, 2000

Elmer L. Naugler of Beverly, died at his home July 10, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. He was the husband of Pauline V. (Churchley) Naugler, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

He was born in Boston, son of the late Walter and Hazel (Bent) Naugler. He was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1937. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the RAF in England and later transferring to the 8th Air Force. Mr. Naugler was associated with Almy, Bigelow and Washburn prior to becoming president of the S & N Oil Corporation in Beverly in 1962 until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Naugler is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter D. Naugler, Jeffrey and Deborah Naugler, Ted W. and Sherry Naugler, all of Beverly; three brothers, Dr. Walter Naugler of Olympia, Wash., Ted Naugler of Hamilton, Winston Naugler of Wayland; a sister, Dorothy Osborn of Wenham; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held July 13 in St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Beverly. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 7 Centennial Drive, Peabody 01960 or Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, 01923. Arrangements were by the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home of Beverly.

George Kaddaras, Owned Brite Venetian Blind
July 20, 2000

George Kaddaras, 87, of Wakefield, died on Friday, July 14, at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. He was born in Peabody on May 11, 1913.

Mr. Kaddaras was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn Classical High School. He owned Brite Venetian Blind Co. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Lazarus Church in East Boston. Mr. Kaddaras was a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by: his wife, Mary (Cogliani) Kaddaras; two sons, George Kaddaras Jr. and his wife Mareann of Wakefield, and Christopher Kaddaras and his wife, Mary, of Beverly; two brothers, John Kaddaras of South Bridge and James Kaddaras of Melrose. He is also survived by four grandchildren, George III, Cherylann and Christopher Kaddaras Jr. and Caroline Loumidis and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held from the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Monday, July 17, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Florence Church. Interment was in Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield. Arrangements by the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.

Grace M. Backman, Beverly native
July 20, 2000

Grace M. (Martin) Backman, 82, of Beverly, wife of the late Emil G. Backman died Monday, July 10 after a brief illness in the Ledgewood Nursing and Rehab facility. Mrs. Backman was born in Beverly, the daughter of the late Roscoe and Amy (Bartlett) Martin.

Mrs. Backman is survived by: a son, David Backman of Freeport, Maine; three grandsons, Michael Backman, stationed in Japan with the U.S. Air Force; Thomas Backman of California, and Christopher Backman of Colorado. She is also survived by one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13, at the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home, Beverly. Burial was in the North Beverly Cemetery.

These who wish, may make memorial contributions to their favorite charity in Mrs. Backman's name.

John F. Claffey, Active K of C member
July 20, 2000

John F. Claffey, 79, of Beverly, died early Sunday morning, July 16 at the Beverly Hospital. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Francis T. and Alice (Brown) Claffey. He was a graduate of Peabody High School in the Class of 1939. He continued his education and graduated from Epiphany College in Newburgh, N.Y.

He was very active in the Knights of Columbus since 1948 and a member of the Msgr. John A. Degan Council in Beverly. In 1964 he was instrumental in forming the John Fitzgerald Kennedy General Assembly Fourth Degree of the K of C. This was the second general assembly established along the North Shore area in this century and encompassed the councils of Beverly, Marblehead, Nahant, Saugus, Lynnfield and Middleton. He was elected the initial Faithful Navigator of this General Assembly, which represented the largest exemplification of various General Assemblies ever held in Eastern Massachusetts.

He was employed with the Salem Evening News as a compositor from 1948 until his retirement where he also wrote many short stories and sketched political and satirical cartoons. He was also vice president of the Local #120 International Typographical Union and a 40-year member of the Union Club in Beverly.

Surviving him are: his sister, Dorothea M. Cronin and her husband, Arthur F. Cronin Jr., of Beverly; his nephew, Mark F. Cronin of Southington, Conn.; his niece, Susan E. Palmieri and her husband, Michael, and their son, Michael C. Palmieri, all of Peabody; and a daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Brian Nardella and two granddaughters all of Beverly.

The funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly on Wednesday, July 19. followed by a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Beverly. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 552 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915 or to the John Fitzgerald Kennedy General Assembly Fourth Degree, K of C, One K of C Drive, Saugus, MA 01906.

John C. Cunney Jr., Veteran, businessman
July 20, 2000

John C. Cunney Jr., 79, of Hamilton husband of Pauline (Perry) Cunney with whom he shared 58 years of marriage, died Saturday July 15, eight days short of his 80th birthday, in Salem Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by his family.

Born, raised and educated in Salem, he was the son of the late John and Edna (Wessel) Cunney. He was a longtime resident of Salem until moving to Hamilton 15 years ago. His bright outlook, kind spirit and dedicated work ethic were trademarks of how he lived his life.

Mr. Cunney was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy as an Electronic Technician and later started his own business, Cunney TV and Radio which he operated in Salem for several years. He was also a proud member of the AMVETS and the American Legion. Mr. Cunney enjoyed dancing, Big Band Music and spending winters in Florida; but he received his greatest enjoyment and pleasure form spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Pauline, he leaves: three daughters and sons-in-laws, Karen and Walter Lesszcynski of Hamilton, Paula and Arthur "Chip" LaBrie of Danvers and Pamela and David Brindamour of Newton, N.H. He also leaves one daughter-in-law Barbara (Collins) Cunney of Beverly.

Mr. Gunney leaves eight grandchildren, John, Laurie, Amy, Kim, Colin. Walter Jr., Katie and David and two great-grandchildren Hannah and Jack. He was the brother of Robert Cunney of Danvers and Dorothy Tobin of Byfield and the brother-in-law of Albert Perry of Maine while also leaving several nieces nephews cousins and friends.

He was the father of the late Capt. John J. Cunney III of the United States Air Force.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no wake, but a memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 22 at 10 a.m. in St Paul's Church Hamilton.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift can be made in his memory for North Shore Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit, 81 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970 or you could do a kind deed for someone as he had done every day of his life.

Joseph F. Tivnan, World War II veteran
July 20, 2000

Joseph F. Tivnan, 75, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000 at Heritage Nursing Care Center in Lowell following a long illness.

Born in Cambridge, he was a graduate of Ringe & Latin High School in Cambridge. He had been a resident of Beverly for most of his life.

Mr. Tivnan served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He obtained the rank of signalman second class and was discharged in February of 1946.

He was employed with Eaton-Nova Company of Danvers. He was also a bartender at the Vittori-Rocci Post, the Franco American Club and the Union Club, all of Beverly.

Survivors include one son, Timothy Tivnan of Burlington; one brother, Richard Tivnan of Ashland; two nieces and two nephews, Karen, Christine, Richard and Albert. He was the brother of the late Albert and Hank Tivnan.

The funeral will be held Friday, July 21, 8:15 a.m., at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., followed by a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly, at 9 a.m. Visiting hours are Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in North Beverly Cemetery.

Nicolina J. Sherber, Native of Saugus
July 20, 2000

Nicolina J. "Lena" (Gallucci) Sherber, 68, of Saugus, died Wednesday, July 12, at Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Paul J. Sherber.

Born and raised in Saugus, she was the daughter of the late A. John and Isabella Gallucci, she lived in Lynn prior to moving back to Saugus in 1967. Mrs. Sherber was active in the Saugus Council on Aging.

She is survived by: a daughter, Pauline A. Baker of Beverly; a grandson, Paul E. Baker; a sister, Mary J. Salois of Wakefield; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Friday, July 14, from the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, Saugus, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Margaret's Church, Saugus. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Stoneham.

Shirley L. Campbell, Order of the Eastern Star
July 20, 2000

Shirley L. (Copp) Campbell, 73, of Manchester, N.H., died June 30, in a local hospital. Her husband, Donald D. Campbell, died June 6, 1984.

Mrs. Campbell was born March 3, 1927, in Beverly, the daughter of Arthur and Frances (Sweeney) Copp. She had lived in Bedford, N.H., for 13 years and had been a resident of Manchester since 1994.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Beverly, a graduate of Dale Carnegie Institute, and a parishioner of South Main Street Church.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by: three sons, Douglas I. Campbell of Concord, NH., Ross W. Campbell of Nashua, N.H. Scott C. Campbell of Manchester, N.H.; two grandchildren Bonnie and Christopher Campbell.

A memorial service was held Monday, July 3, in the South Main Street Church, Manchester-by-the-Sea. Goodwin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorial may preferred to Deacons Fund or the Flower Mission Fund of the South Main Street Church.

William J. Sullivan
July 20, 2000

William J. Sullivan, 86, of Manchester by the Sea, died Tuesday, July 18, at Blueberry Hill Health Care in Beverly. He was the husband of Rita A. (Scully) Sullivan.

Born in Beverly, son of the late John and Mary (McKeone) Sullivan, he was raised and educated in Beverly. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and attained the rank or corporal. He served in China and Burma, India. Mr. Sullivan had been a resident of Manchester by the Sea for over 40 years.

He was employed with General Electric in Lynn for over 20 years and retired in 1974. He was an electrician for the company.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Sullivan is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Faith and Bradford Silva of East Gloucester and Hope Watt of Newbury; a sister, Eleanor Gildart of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ann Frost.

The funeral will be held from the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Saturday, July 22, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The family has requested no visiting hours. Burial will be in Rosedale Extension Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Altar Fund, 62 School St., Manchester by the Sea, 01944 or to the Blueberry Hill Health Care Resident Council, 755 Brimbal Ave., Beverly 01915

Alphonse L. Gagne, 85, Member of USM Quarter Century Club
July 13, 2000

Alphonse L. "Sam" Gagne, 85, of Beverly, husband of Marie (Simard) Gagne, died July 9, 2000 at Beverly Hospital.

He was born in Salem, the son of the late Adrien and Anna (Denis) Gagne. He was a graduate of Beverly Trade School, Class of 1933, and was a resident of Beverly for more than 50 years.

Mr. Gagne was employed with the United Shoe Machine Corporation in Beverly for more than 40 years. He was an inspector for the company and retired in 1977. He was a member of the USM Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Gagne was a past governor and life member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Salem for more than 50 years. He was also an active communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church.

In addition to his wife, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Claudette and Edmund Nowe of Valatie, N.Y., and Ann Marie Gagne and her husband, Joseph McCoy, of Millis; one brother, Albert Gagne, of Salem; three grandchildren, Sgt. Patrick Nowe, USAF, and Suzanne Nowe, both of Fayetteville, N.C., and Julie (Nowe) Matthews of Genesco, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Louise Birmingham, Yvonne LaBranche, Alfred, George and Leon Gagne.

Funeral services were held July 7 from the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 552 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915 or to the American Lung Association of Essex County, 100 Cummings Center, Suite 323A, Beverly, MA 01915.
