James P. 'Jimmy' Jones

ARLINGTON - James P. "Jimmy" Jones, 59, formerly of South Boston, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Lianne S. (Collins) Jones.

He was born in Boston, the son of the late Edward and Catherine Jones. Mr. Jones grew up and was educated in South Boston.

Mr. Jones was employed by McCusker and Gill Company for 20 years. The last 10 years of his career with McCusker and Gill Co., he was the foreman overseeing work done at the Children's Hospital in Boston. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local 17, for the past 37 years.

Mr. Jones was a resident of Arlington for the past 24 years. He played softball for 30 years with the Marconi Club in Stoneham. He enjoyed fishing and was a great Boston sports fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Christopher Jones and his wife, Barbara of Burlington, and James Jones and his wife, Denise of Franklin; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of Daniel Jones of Weymouth, Katie Jones of Weymouth, Patricia Jones of Fitchburg, Edward Jones of South Boston, Jackie Jones of Norfolk, Joanne Flynn of Quincy, and Dottie Jones of Weymouth.

Funeral services were private.

John J. Haley Jr.

STONEHAM - John J. Haley Jr., 79, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, following a short illness. He was the husband of Jean E. (McKerrall) Haley.

He was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1942.

Mr. Haley was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the Malden American Legion Post 69, the Malden Irish American Club, and Malden Catholic Alumni.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Jean Lucas and her husband, Charles M. of Arlington, and Catherine A. Sullivan and her husband, James B. of Hampton, N.H.; a sister, Patricia A. Erlandson of Malden; and five grandchildren.

He was also the grandfather of the late John M. Lucas and the brother of the late Mary R. Barry and Frederick Haley.

A funeral was held April 16, from the A.E. Finnegan and Son Home for Funerals in Stoneham, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Church, Wakefield. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Michel A. Gariepy

WOLFEBORO, N.H. - Michel A. Gariepy, 89, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro from complications following surgery. He was the husband of Carolyn Gariepy.

He was born in Somerville on Nov. 8, 1913, the son of the late Joseph A. Gariepy and Laura M. Marceau. Mr. Gariepy graduated from Arlington High School. While a student, he took pipe organ lessons at the New England Conservatory of Music and played at weddings and funerals at St. James Church. He also graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1936.

During his college years, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the New Hampshire woods.

While in the lithographic printing business in World War II, he helped print the invasion maps for D-Day on silk for the parachutists, a secret he kept until he was 85 years old.

In 1951, he began working at Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ Co. in Boston, starting as a cabinet-maker's assistant and rising to become an assistant vice president. He designed many album covers and advertisements for the world-renowned organ builders.

From 1971 to 1973, he apprenticed at the Powell Flute Co. in Arlington Heights, learning to work in precious metals for flutes for their international clientele. In 1973, he began work as an electro-mechanical technician at Ralph Gerbrand and Associates.

Mr. Gariepy retired to Wolfeboro in 1991, to enjoy his many hobbies, including bird watching, composing music for electronic keyboard, computer-generated art, linoleum block printing, and Scrabble. Since childhood, he was constantly driven to invent things and processed more than 150 in all.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen P. Gariepy of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Jeanne-Michele Salander of San Jose, Calif.; and a sister, Elzire G. Burns of Plymouth.

A memorial Mass was celebrated March 12, at St. Cecelia's Church in Wolfeboro. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Saville and Grannan Funeral Home, Arlington.

George W. Crafts

ARLINGTON - George W. Crafts, 94, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was the husband of Katharine (Sullivan) Crafts.

He was born in Boston on Jan. 26, 1909, the son of the late John and Celia (O'Rourke) Crafts.

Mr. Crafts was employed as a salesman at Brooks Brothers clothing store until his retirement.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, the Rev. George W. Crafts Jr. of Providence, R.I.; a daughter, Joyce C. Glynn of Warwick, R.I.; three sisters, Sister Cecilia Crafts, Gertrude Crafts, and Alma Durant; and four grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late John Crafts and Eleanor Crafts.

A funeral Mass was celebrated April 16, at St. Camillus Church in Arlington. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Arrangements were under the care of the Keefe Funeral Home Inc., Cambridge.

Francesco Carella

ARLINGTON - Francesco Carella, 61, a longtime Arlington resident, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Natalie (Penta) Carella.

He was born in Reggio, Calabria, Italy, on Dec. 3, 1941, the son of the late Thomaso and Maria (Nunziata) Carella.

Mr. Carella was employed in the construction industry for many years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Marie Carella; two brothers, Vincent Carella and his wife, Cathy of Winchester, and Joseph Carella and his wife, Michlina of Arlington; a sister, Matilda Tassone of Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother-in-law of the late Frank Tassone.

A funeral was held April 14 from the Devito Funeral Home in Arlington followed by a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church. Interment was in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.

Lola Fiorenza

ARLINGTON - Lola (Santoni) Fiorenza, 89, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was the wife of the late Salvatore F. Fiorenza.

She was born in Boston and had been a longtime Arlington resident.

She is survived by a son, Edward Fiorenza of Medford; three daughters, Anne Reardon of Weymouth, Jacquelyn Fiorenza of Arlington, and Patti Andrews and her husband Richard of Weymouth; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was also the sister of the late James V. Santoni.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 23, at St. Agnes Church in Arlington. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Arrangements were under the care of the Berglund, Williams, O'Brien Funeral Home, Arlington.

Mildred E. Hannafin

ARLINGTON - Mildred E. (Rourke) Hannafin, 79, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She was the wife of the late George E. Hannafin.

She was born in Cambridge, and was a longtime resident of Arlington.

She is survived by two sons, George P. Hannafin and his wife Joyce of Hudson, N.H., and Gary E. Hannafin and his wife Sharon of Alton, N.H.; three daughters, Jean F. Hannafin of Medford, Dr. Joyce Geranis and her husband Patrick of Tucson, Ariz., and Janet M. Powers and her husband John of Arlington; and 13 grandchildren.

A funeral was held June 7, from the Berglund, Williams, O'Brien Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral Mass in the Church of St. Jerome. Interment was private.

William J. 'Tim' McMakin

ARLINGTON - William J. "Tim" McMakin, 73, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Gladys (Kiely-Nolan) McMakin.

He was born in South Boston.

Mr. McMakin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict at the rank of corporal.

He was employed as an electronic engineer by the Federal Aviation Agency at Logan Airport.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Andrew McMakin of Cambridge, Matthew McMakin of Arlington, Maureen Williams in Connecticut, Marcia Nolan of Arlington and Christopher Nolan in New York; a brother, David McMakin of Buzzards Bay; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held June 4, from the DeVito-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Arlington Heights, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Eulalia's Church, Winchester.

Robert A. Covell

FT. WORTH, Texas - Robert "Bob" Allen Covell, 59, of Ft. Worth, Texas, formerly of Arlington, a retired project manager, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at home. He was the husband of Marcia Anne Covell.

Born in Boston, he was the son of Robert J. and Helen Covell. He graduated from high school in Arlington and attended Northeastern University. In 1961, he graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In 1991, he moved to Fort Worth for a project management position with IBM, retiring in 1996 after 30 years of employment.

Following his retirement, he became senior manager of the project management office at CSC, Computer Science Corporation.

Besides his wife, Mr. Covell is survived by a son, Scott and his wife, Gina Covell of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Sherri of Ashland, N.H.; one grandson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 2 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller, Texas.
