Salvatore J. Mosca

LEXINGTON - Salvatore J. Mosca, 81, died Sept. 13, 2000, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was the husband of Barbara J. (Ellis) Mosca.

Mr. Mosca served in the Navy and the Army during World War II.

He was the owner of Mosca's Bakery in Cambridge for 30 years, until his retirement.

Mr. Mosca was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a youth group advisor at St. Brigid's Church for several years. He enjoyed working in his garden.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, James J. Mosca of Bedford, Paul J. Mosca and Ken J. Mosca, both of Lexington; a daughter, Judy Drenga of Veron, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 18, in St. Brigid's Church. Interment was in Westview Cemetery.

For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Mosca's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were under the care of the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington.

Ruth S. Beebe

BEDFORD - Ruth S. Beebe, 79, a resident of Lexington for 34 years, died Sept. 23, 2000, following a brief illness. She was the wife of John S. Beebe.

A long-time member of Lexington's First Parish (Unitarian) Church, Mrs. Beebe was active in the Nuclear Action and Social Responsibility committees, as well as being a religious education instructor.

Mrs. Beebe received her bachelor and master's degrees from Boston University and taught English at Harwichport and Canton high schools. After earning a further degree in library science, she spent nearly two decades as the children's librarian at Monroe and Harrington schools.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dick Beebe of Los Angeles; a daughter, Barbara Takahashi of San Diego; a sister, Lois Johnson of Boston; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Beebe's name may be made to the First Parish Church of Lexington.

Arrangements were under the care of the Bedford Funeral Home, Bedford.

Joseph Strain

Joseph W. Strain of Bedford died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of the late Mary (DiCicco) Strain.

Born in Brookline he was the son of the late Alexander and Mary (Devery) Strain. He was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Brookline and worked as a photo engraver for Wright Co., formerly of Cambridge. He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union. He was also a World War II veteran serving in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy Seabees.

Mr. Strain is survived by a son Paul and his wife Kyle Strain of Tewksbury; a daughter Catherine Strain of Bedford; two sisters, Eleanor Schatz of Burlington and Marie McBride of Brookline and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 15 at St. Michael's Church in Bedford. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Caroline Stander

BEDFORD - Caroline (Hencher) Stander, 102, died Sept. 6, 2000, at the Suburban Manor Nursing Home in Acton. She was the wife of the late Adam Stander.

She was born in Natick, R.I., on Jan. 5, 1898, the daughter of John and Josephine (DaBrowski) Hencher.

Mrs. Stander was self-employed and operated a chicken farm in Bedford. She had lived in New Bedford for many years before moving to Bedford in 1920. She was a member of St. Michael's Church in Bedford.

She is survived by a son, Adam A. Stander of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Florence Fijal of Bedford, and Helen Pelerin of Naples, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late James Stander.

A funeral was held Sept. 11, from the Bedford Funeral Home in Bedford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Michael's Church. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

Irwin Sizer

CAMBRIDGE - Dr. Irwin W. Sizer, 90, dean emeritus of the graduate school and professor of biochemistry, emeritus, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died at his home in Carleton Willard Village, Bedford, Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. He was the husband of Helen Sizer who died in 1997.

Born in Bridgewater April 4, 1910, he graduated from Brown University in 1931 and received his doctorate from Rutgers University in 1935. He was a resident of Lexington for many years before moving to Bedford in 1993.

He immediately began a 60-year career at MIT where he assumed chairmanship of the Department of Biology in 1957. At this time he directed the department into the field of molecular biology. He became dean of the graduate school in 1967.

During his tenure as dean he was active in the recruitment of women and minority students. A joint doctorate program in oceanography was developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. In 1974 he co-founded with MIT alumnus Uncus Whitaker and Harvard Medical School professor Dr. George Thorn, the Whitaker College at MIT which offered joint doctorate programs with Harvard, Tufts and Boston University Medical Schools. In 1996 he and his late wife endowed the Helen and Irwin Sizer Career Development Professorship at MIT.

For several years he was a consultant to the National Institutes of Health. He was both a trustee and governor of Rutgers University and trustee of the Boston Museum of Science and served as a consultant to the Ford Foundation and Johnson & Johnson. He was also a board member of the Boston Federal Savings Bank.

He received an honorary doctorate of science degree from Brown University and was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For many years he was active on national committees working for the improvement of opportunities and standards in the life sciences. Under his leadership, work in molecular biology at MIT became world famous.

Dr. Sizer is survived by a daughter, Meredith Ann Twomey of Newton; four grandchildren; two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 15 at Carleton Willard Village at 4 p.m.

L. Dorothy Sheehey

BEDFORD - L. Dorothy (Printon) Sheehey died Sept. 1, 2000.

Mrs. Sheehey was a longtime Bedford resident and previously was a bookkeeper for the Charles L. Gilman & Sons. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. John's Parochial School in Cambridge.

Mrs. Sheehey is survived by a son, Thomas Sheehey of Medford; a daughter, Dorothy Hill of Bedford; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Sept. 6, from the Shawsheen Funeral Home in Bedford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Michael's Church. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.

Alice J. Moran

LEOMINSTER - Alice J. (Lajoie) Moran, 81 of 80 Boutelle St., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Leominster Hospital after an illness. She was the wife of 50 years of Martin L. Moran, former superintendent of schools for the city of Leominster, who died in 1993.

Born in Worcester March 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Alexander G. and Phyllis B.(Clarke) Lajoie and lived in Worcester until moving to Leominster in 1940. She was a 1936 graduate of Worcester South High School and a 1940 graduate of Framingham State College.

Mrs. Moran was a home economics teacher at Leominster Junior High School from 1940 to 1944. She also taught home economics at Memorial Junior High School in Fitchburg, retiring in 1984 after 16 years. She was a member of St. Leo's Parish in Leominster and its former Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and the Daughters of Isabella, Leominster Circle #256. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Leominster Fortnightly Club, the Fitchburg-Framingham State College Club, the Fitchburg Teachers Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the National Education Association, a 50-year volunteer for the American Red Cross and a longtime member of the former Leominster Hospital Guild.

Mrs. Moran is survived by two sons, Martin P. "Buzz" Moran of San Clemente, Calif., and Michael K. Moran of Bedford, Mass.; two daughters, Kathleen P. Bryant and Mary A. Moran, both of Leominster; three brothers, William C. Lajoie of Albuquerque, N.M., Robert N. Lajoie of Mission Viejo, Calif., and David E. Lajoie of Richardson, Texas; two sisters, Phyllis Prochnow of Oxford and Jacqueline Muns of Midville, Ga.; three grandsons and a granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Monday, Aug. 21 from the Curley-Masciarelli Funeral Home, Leominster, with Mass celebrated in St. Leo's Church. Burial was in St. Leo's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 114 Meriam Ave., Leominster, MA 01453 or the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 99 Church St., Leominster, MA 01453.

Ronald J. Massa

BEDFORD - Ronald J. Massa, 65, a Bedford resident since 1968, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Emerson Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine (Costello) Massa.

Born in Newark, N.J. Aug. 13, 1935, he was the son of the late Mario and Florence (Casale) Massa. He was employed as an electrical engineer for R.J.A. Associates in Framingham

Besides his wife, Mr. Massa is survived by four children, Diane Massa of Southboro, Ron Massa of Bedford, Robert Massa of Colorado and Chris Massa of Virginia; two brothers, Norman and Allen Massa and a sister, Carole Ann Ferrise, all of New Jersey.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Michael's Church in Bedford, Thursday, Aug. 31 with interment in Shawsheen Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 12 Kent Way, Suite 210, Byfield, MA 01922.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Donald Govostes

Donald T. Govostes, 66, a lifelong resident of Woburn, died suddenly at his home on Everett Street Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000.

Born in Woburn, he was the son of the late Arthur and Sarah (Harkins) Govostes. He attended Woburn public schools and after high school enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps., serving in Japan. He was a welder and was employed for various companies in the Woburn area, retiring in 1998. He was a life member of the George A. Campbell Post 101 American Legion.

Mr. Govostes was the brother of Arthur Govostes Jr. of Belmont and Florida, Mary Weldon of Winchester, Walter of Bedford, Kenneth of Reading, Barbara Uliano of Wakefield, Norman of Burlington and William of Woburn. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held from the P.J. Cox & Sons Funeral Home, Woburn, Friday, Jan. 14, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Charles Church. Interment took place in the U.S. National Cemetery in Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lawrence D. Kennedy

BEDFORD - Lawrence D. Kennedy, 33, died unexpectedly on Sept. 24, 2000.

Following graduation from St. Patrick's Comprehensive School in Shannon, Ireland, Lawrence attended a two-year program in horticulture sponsored by the Polio Fellowship of Ireland, and a one-year horticulture course sponsored by the Irish National Industrial Training Authority. In addition, he was a competitive kayaker, having attained a position on the Irish International Kayaking Team.

Lawrence came to America in 198o from his native Shannon, Ireland, to pursue his dream of working in the horticulture industry. Prior to being employed by the town of Bedford, Lawrence was grounds supervisor for the Seabury Retirement Community in Bloomfield, Conn., where he managed 155 acres of finished grounds.

For the past three years, Lawrence had been the grounds operations manager at the Bedford Department of Public Works. In this position, Lawrence directly managed the overall care and maintenance of Bedford's athletic and park facilities, all town and school grounds, Shawsheen Cemetery, and the Old Burying Ground. In addition, Lawrence played a major role with numerous town events such as Bedford Day, Concerts on the Common, Pole Capping, and Memorial Day activities.

He was an active member of the American Public Works Association, the Bedford Rotary Club, and the New England Cemetery Association.

Arrangements are under the care of the Shawsheen Funeral Home, Bedford.
