James C. Doherty, 71, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — James C. Doherty, 71, died May 29, 2001, at Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley in Billerica. He was the husband of Louise L. (Sobrero) Doherty.

He was born in Arlington on Sept. 5, 1929, the son of the late James C. and Elizabeth (O’Neil) Doherty.

Mr. Doherty was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as a purchasing agent at UMass Medical Center in Worcester before his retirement.

Mr. Doherty was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford, where he was a eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James C. Doherty Jr. of North Attleboro; a daughter, Elizabeth Ruggieri of Medway; and a grandson. He was also the brother of the late Paul Doherty and Ruth McPhillips.

A funeral was held June 1, from the Blake Funeral Home in Chelmsford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church. Interment was in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.

Henry G. Joly, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — Henry G. Joly, died May 31, 2001, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Evelyn A. (Sirois) Joly.

He was born in Lowell, the son of the late Eugene and Mary (Elia) Joly. He attended Lowell schools.

Until his retirement, he was an employee of the city of Lowell for over 29 years.

Mr. Joly was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford and had been a member of the former St. Jean Baptiste Church in Lowell.

Mr. Joly served in World War II with the Army 372nd Engineers stationed in Europe. He was the recipient of the good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.

He was a member of the VFW-Walker Rogers Post of Lowell, the American Legion Post 87 of Lowell, and was a member of the former CMAC of Lowell for many years. He had also been an active volunteer at the Chelmsford Senior Center.

He is survived by a sister, Sybil Deschenes and her husband Wilfred of Lowell; two nephews and a niece; a godchild; and several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins in the Lowell area. He also leaves his close friends, David and Maria Crocker of Chelmsford, and Barbara Renison of Westford. He was also the brother of the late Marian Joly, Cecile Joly, Yvonne Arcand, and Leah Joly.

A funeral was held June 4, from the Archambault Funeral Home in Lowell, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Chelmsford. Interment was in St. Louis De Gonzague Cemetery, Nashua, N.H.

Frances M. Mace, 82, formerly of Chelmsford

WILLIAMSTOWN — Frances M. (Heinrich) Mace, 82, formerly of Chelmsford, died May 30, 2001, at the Sweetbrook Care Center in Williamstown. She was the wife of the late Douglass A. Mace, who died in 1999.

She was born in Arlington on May 20, 1919, the daughter of the late Oscar and Mary (Simpson) Heinrich. She was educated in Arlington Schools and graduated from Arlington High School in 1936. She graduated from Lesley College in Cambridge in 1939.

Mrs. Mace was a homemaker, but after raising her children, she taught kindergarten in Billerica Public Schools for 10 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Russell and her husband Charles of Lowell, and Sharon Clark of New Ashford and her husband Earnest; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Douglass A. Mace Jr. and the sister of the late David Heinrich.

A funeral service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Maine.

George A. Mohrmann, 80, leaves family in Chelmsford

George A. Mohrmann, 80, of Leominster, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Keystone Nursing Center in Leominster after a brief illness. He was the husband of Tresa I. (Hache) Mohrmann.

A native of Schenectady, N.Y., he moved to Leominster in 1969. He graduated in 1950 from Union College in Schenectady and worked for the General Electric Company for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Mohrmann was active in the local craft community, exhibiting his wooden toys at the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Brush Gallery in Lowell and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln. He was a Literacy Volunteer, a member of the Petersham Curling Club, a communicant of St. Leo's Parish and involved with the Thayer Symphony Orchestra.

Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by three daughters, Mary T. Largey of Leominster, Sarah J. Neal of Chelmsford and Katherine E. Tiger of Winthrop; a brother, Arthur J. Mohrmann of Orleans and five grandchildren. He was father of the late Arthur L. Mohrmann who died in 1968.

A funeral Mass was celebrated June 1 at St. Leo's Church in Leominster. Burial will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Leominster Friends of the Library, 30 West St., Leominster, MA 01453.

Silas F. Richardson and Sons Funeral Home, Leominster, was in charge of arrangements.

Douglas A. Reid, 82, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — Douglas A. Reid, 82, died May 31, 2001, at New England Medical Center in Boston. He was the husband of Phyllis E. (Welch) Reid for 59 years.

He was born in Springfield on Oct. 16, 1918, the son of the late Hugh and Clara Reid. He attended Cushing Academy and Worcester Polytechnical Institute, and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

He was employed at the former Schraffts Candy in Boston for 25 years before joining the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Reid was a longtime member of the Central Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John C. Reid and his wife Terry L. of Perth Amboy, N.J.; six grandchildren; two nephews; and a former daughter-in-law, Renee Phillips Reid of Port Monmouth, N.J.

A funeral service was held June 6, at the Blake Funeral Home in Chelmsford. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. on June 7, in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford, to which friends are invited.

J. Stephen Ryan, 90, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — J. Stephen Ryan, 90, a Chelmsford resident for the past two years, formerly of Nashua, N.H., died June 1, 2001, at Palm Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of Harriet (Gray) Ryan.

He was born in Medford on Sept. 2, 1910, the son of the late Francis P. and Hannah F. (Noonan) Ryan.

Mr. Ryan was employed as a motorman for the MBTA and belonged to the Carmen’s Union.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Nashua.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four nieces, Alma " Chiki " Rigazio and her husband Paul of Chelmsford, Mary Evans of Alexandria, Va., Patricia Perchard of Hull, and Peg Cameron of Nova Scotia; and a nephew, Ronald E. Chisholm of Wakefield, N.H.

A funeral was held June 5, from the Blake Funeral Home in Chelmsford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Rita E. Severo, 77, leaves family in Chelmsford

Rita E. Severo, 77, of Woburn, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Orlando Regional Sand Lakes Hospital in Florida following a long illness. She was the wife of Fred A. Severo.

Born n Woburn she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Margaret E. (Burke) DeMeo. She was raised in East Boston and graduated from East Boston High School. She made her home in Woburn since 1954. Prior to retirement 15 years ago she was employed as an office manager in the payroll department of B.A.S.F. in Bedford for many years. She was devoted to her family.

Besides her husband of 52 years she is survived by a son, Fred A. Severo Jr. and his wife Darlene of Revere; a daughter, Debra R. Severo of Woburn; three sisters, Phyllis Greer of Burlington, Barbara McCarthy of Woburn and Carolyn Vandall of Chelmsford; three brothers, Anthony DeMeo of E. Boston, Richard DeMeo of Peabody and David DeMeo of Billerica and three grandchildren She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Paul DeMeo and a sister Rosemarie Mattarazzo.

The funeral was held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, Woburn, Monday, June 4 followed by a funeral Mass in St. Barbara's Church, Woburn. Interment followed at Woodbrook Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Mary T. Castriotta, 84, of Littleton

Mary T. (Cagnina) Castriotta, 84, a longtime Littleton resident, died May 29, 2001, at Apple Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ayer. She was the wife of the late Louis Castriotta, who died in 1995.

She was born in Woburn on Aug. 19, 1916, the daughter of the late Richard and Pasqualina (Buonasera) Cagnina.

Mrs. Castriotta was employed as a bookkeeper at Filene’s in Boston for 20 years before her retirement.

She was a communicant of St. Anne’s Church.

She enjoyed playing bingo and other activities at the Littleton Senior Center.

Mrs. Castriotta is survived by a son, Richard Castriotta of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Lois Socorelis of Westford; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Gerald P. Cagnina of Stoneham.

A funeral was held June 2 from the Healy Funeral Home in Westford, followed by a funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anne’s Church, Littleton. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Westford.

Carmen N. Grigg Sr., 64, formerly of Littleton

Carmen N. Grigg Sr., 64, of Gardner, formerly of Littleton, died at his home Monday, May 28, 2001.

He was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, on Jan. 18, 1938, the son of Eldon and Hazel (Palmer) Grigg. He grew up in Canada and came to Cambridge as a teenager. He worked in the printing trade all his life, working for Barnard Printing in Boston and later owning and operating Grigg Printing in Littleton for many years. He made his home in Cambridge for five years, moving to Littleton in 1963.

He was a member of the Charles Welch Masonic Lodge in Maynard and a Shriner. He was also a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ayer.

Mr. Grigg is survived by his parents of Prince Edward Island; his children, Irene L. Quinn of Leominster, Timothy E. Grigg of Gardner, Brian T. Grigg of Dracut and Carmen N. Grigg Jr. of Acton; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Badger Funeral Home, Littleton, on Friday, June 1, with a funeral Mass at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Ayer. Burial was at Westlawn Cemetery, Littleton.

Elizabeth Webb, 61, of Littleton

Elizabeth (McCoy) Webb, 61, of Littleton, died suddenly at her home on Monday, May 28, 2001. She was the wife of David Webb.

She was born in Boston on Oct. 27, 1939, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Dolan) McCoy. She grew up in Arlington and was a graduate of Arlington High School, class of 1957. She attended UMass Boston and worked as a dispensing optician for Dr. Horley in Arlington and Dr. Messa, for several years.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Steven R. Hill and Douglas F. Hill, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kevin P. Hill of San Diego, Calif.; her brother, Frank McCoy of Raynham; a sister, Helena Seyferth of Lexington; and three grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Arthur McCoy.

There were no funeral services.

Badger Funeral Home, Littleton, was in charge of arrangements.
