Carll T. Gleason, 91, formerly of Chelmsford

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Carll T. Gleason, 91, formerly of Lowell and Chelmsford, died May 6, 2001 in Phoenix. He was the husband of Helen (Miller) Gleason.

He was born in Lowell on April 23, 1910, the son of the late John T. and Susie (Carll) Gleason. He attended high school in Chelmsford.

Mr. Gleason began his 30-year career in the Navy in 1927 as a seaman and retired in 1957 at the rank of commander. Before World War II, he served on the battleships USS Utah and USS Arizona, and was stationed at Kaneohe Naval Air Station in Oahu, Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

For a period of three years during World War II, he commanded a patrol torpedo squadron of 12 boats and 280 men in the South Pacific, ranging from New Guinea to the Philippines. Mr. Gleason coordinated and carried out the evacuation of the island’s presidential family.

After the war, he was stationed for a year and a half in China. His ship was the last U.S. vessel to leave Shanghai before its fall to Communist China.

After retiring from the Navy, he moved to Phoenix in 1958 and accepted a position with valley National Bank. He worked as a loan officer and assistant manager at the Central Southern office from 1961 to 1963. In November 1963, Mr. Gleason opened a new valley Bank office in Carefree and retired from the bank in 1975.

Mr. Gleason enjoyed listening to jazz and traveling to Hawaii and Mexico.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Gloria Patenaude of Chelmsford, and Alexandra Petrich of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Lydia Guzman, 66, leaves family in Chelmsford

CAMBRIDGE — Lydia Guzman, 66, died June 6, 2001, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

She was born in Trujillo, Peru on Jan. 6, 1935, the daughter of the late Julio C. and Angelica (Rodriguez) Guzman. She graduated from Colegio Dalton School and the National Institute of Health in Lima, Peru.

Ms. Guzman was employed as a statistician with the Peru National Institute of Health in Lima for more than 25 years, retiring in 1985. She lived in Bedford before moving to Cambridge.

She is survived by a son, Santiago A. Paredes and his wife Nancy (Chmielinski) of Chelmsford; three sisters, Adela Guzman Rodrigues and Loba Guzman de Chavez, both of Lima, and Sabina Guzman de Rodrigues of Trujillo; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the former wife of the late Dr. Santiago N. Paredes, and the sister of the late Marina Guzman Rodrigues of Peru.

A funeral service was held June 9, at the Lutheran Church of the Savior in Bedford. Interment was in Hart Pond Cemetery, Chelmsford.

Elizabeth A. Owens, 80, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — Elizabeth A. Owens, 80, died June 5, 2001, at the Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford.

She was born in Boston on Sept. 23, 1920, the daughter of the late John A. and Grace (McEvoy) Owens. She graduated from Lowell High School in 1937, and from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1941.

Miss Owens served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

She taught in the Lowell school system for 32 years. She retired in 1974.

Miss Owens was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church in Lowell and was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality.

She was a member of the Retired State and County Municipal Employees Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the League of Catholic Women.

She is survived by two cousins, M. Gladys Garrigan of Chelmsford, and Mrs. Alvin (Eleanor) Wetmore of Londonderry, N.H.; and her close friends, Mary Sullivan of Lowell, and Mary Claire Burns of Chelmsford.

A funeral was held June 8, from the Dolan Funeral Home in Chelmsford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Margaret’s Church, Lowell. Interment was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell.

Roy W. Rudolph, 69, owned business in Chelmsford

NASHUA, N.H. — Roy Warren Rudolph, 69, died June 5, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua. He was the husband of Lois (McGuire) Rudolph.

He was born in Warren, N.H., on May 13, 1932, the son of the late Roy Harold and Julia May (Roghaar) Rudolph.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Rudolph was employed as a mechanic and owned and operated Roy Rudolph’s Auto Repair in North Chelmsford for many years. Most recently, he worked part-time at the Federal Aviation Administration Center in Nashua.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Chelmsford.

He had lived in Nashua for 14 years, and previously lived in Waltham and Bedford.

In addition to his wife of 23 years, he is survived by a son, David Rudolph and his wife Su of Florida; a daughter, Diane Rudolph of Michigan; a stepson, Steven Edwards of Brookline, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Susan Abicrombie of California; a half brother, Cliff Williams of Ossipee, N.H.; and several grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Forest Rudolph.

A memorial service was held June 9, at the St. Laurent Funeral Home in Nashua, N.H.

John L. Veiga, 49, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — John L. " Johnny " Veiga, 49, died June 5, 2001, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell. He was the husband of Therese " Terry " (Soucy) Veiga.

He was born in Lowell on Nov. 11, 1951, the son of Nora (Blott) Veiga of Westford and the late Joseph Veiga. He was educated in Lowell schools and graduated from Lowell Trade School’s Carpentry Division with the Class of 1971.

Mr. Veiga was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford.

Prior to his disabling illness in 1978, he was a finish carpenter. Unable to continue his trade, he became a licensed real estate agent in 1985. However, due to repeated illness, he retired in 1989.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Sara Veiga, a freshman at Chelmsford High School; two brothers, Joseph M. Veiga and his wife Terry of Fresno, Calif., and Martin J. Veiga and his wife Alice of Lowell; four sisters, Noreen Moody and her husband Austin of Hampton, Va., Elizabeth " Betty " Grady of Chelmsford, Carol Fallon and her husband William of Taunton, and Gail Milne and her husband Douglas E. of Tyngsboro; 33 nieces and nephews; 17 grandnieces and grandnephews; as well as many in-laws, lifelong friends, companions and special neighbors.

A funeral was held June 9, from the Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home in Lowell, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Chelmsford. Interment was in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.

Barbara L. Rollins, 68, leaves family in Chelmsford

TEWKSBURY — Barbara L. (LaRovere) Rollins, 68, died June 3, 2001, at her home following a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Joseph A. Rollins Jr.

She was born in Everett on July 4, 1932, the daughter of Alice (Gardin) LaRovere of Everett and the late Nicholas LaRovere. She was educated in the Everett school system.

Mrs. Rollins had been a resident of Tewksbury since 1967 and was a communicant of St. William’s Church.

In addition to her husband of 42 years, she is survived by two sons, Alan J. Rollins of Chelmsford, and David W. Rollins and his wife Cathy of Woburn; a daughter, Gail A. Garvey and her husband Leo of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Norma Fiorentino and her husband Michael of North Reading; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Delores S. Deheulle.

A funeral was held June 7, from the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home in Tewksbury, followed by a funeral Mass in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

G. Earle Camber, 79, of Wilmington

WILMINGTON — G. Earle Camber, 79, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was the husband of Ruth E. (Fairweather) Camber.

He was born in Arthurette, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of the late Delbert and Florence (Muir) Camber, and moved to Wilmington in 1952.

Mr. Camber was employed as a machinist and mechanic for Sylvania, Morrison & Schiff, and Wang. He was also a school bus driver for Trombly Motor Coach, and drove a van for the Wilmington Senior Citizens.

He was a member of the Canadian Legion, the Quannapowitt Yacht Club, the North American Family Camping Association, and a past commander of the Wilmington American Legion Post 136.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Robert Allen and His wife Patricia Riley of Londonderry, N.H., Bruce Camber and his wife Hattie of San Diego, Calif., William Harmen of Nashville, Tenn., and Daniel Harmen of Wilmington; a daughter, Valerie Borgal and her husband Thomas of Tewksbury; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Golda Conley and Anne Fish, both of Bedford.

A funeral service will be held today, June 14, at a time to be announced. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Marion E. Garside, 92, of Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — Marion E. (Hardy) Garside, 92, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Wentworth Nursing Home in Lowell. She was the wife of the late David Garside Sr., who died in 1983.

She was born in Andover on Sept. 21, 1908, the daughter of the late Edward S. and Laura J. (Lovejoy) Hardy. She was educated in Andover schools and graduated from the former Punchard High School in 1925. She later graduated from the former Lowell Commercial College.

Mrs. Garside was a resident of Tewksbury since 1936, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tewksbury for over 60 years. In addition, she was a member of the Philathea’s Group of the church.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a secretary by the Myers Thread Company of Lowell. She previously worked as the secretary for the superintendent of Andover Public Schools.

Mrs. Garside enjoyed many activities, especially gardening.

She is survived by two sons, David Garside Jr. and his wife Marilyn of Waterford, Conn., and Thomas E. Garside of Tewksbury; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several cousins. She was also the mother of the late Adrith L. Goddard who died in 1996, and the sister of the late Olive L. Carruthers who died in 1996.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at the First Baptist Church, 1500 Andover St., Route 133, Tewksbury. Interment will be in West Parish Cemetery, Andover. Calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m., today, June 14, at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury.

Kara L. Irving, 20, of Wilmington

WILMINGTON — Kara L. Irving, 20, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at the Children’s Hospital in Boston surrounded by family and friends.

She was born in Winchester, the daughter of Gerald B. Jr. and Jean M. (Boudreau) Irving of Wilmington. Miss Irving graduated from Wilmington High School in 1999, and attended Syracuse University in New York.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Gregory " Greg " Irving of Wilmington; paternal grandparents, Gerald B. Sr. and Mary Irving; maternal grandparents, Stephen and Rita Boudreau; paternal great-grandmother, Sarah Burgess, all of Medford; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral was held June 11, from the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home in Wilmington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Thomas Church.
