Charles A. Demos, 70, leaves family in Wilmington

FREMONT, N.H. — Charles A. Demos, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Peg Demos.

He was born in Somerville on Sept. 22, 1931, the son of the late Anastos Demos and Helen Pappas, and was raised by the late Mary Bogris. He was a resident of Fremont since 1971.

Mr. Demos was the former owner and operator of Prospect Buffet in Cambridge for 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Demos was a longtime member of the American Legion in Epping.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Ernest Demos of Hooksett, N.H., William Cadiero of Brentwood, N.H., and Eddie Demos of Fremont, N.H.; five daughters, Pamela Demos of Lynn, Annette Magnusson of Kingston, N.H., Kimberly Rowley in Louisiana, Julie Fahey of Dover, N.H., and Stephanie Demos of Fremont, N.H.; three brothers, James Demos of Wilmington, Nicolas Demos in Greece, and Christopher Demos of Marlborough; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Oct. 19, from the Brewitt Funeral Home in Epping, N.H. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston, at a later date.

Marie L. D’Avanzo, 61, leaves family in Wilmington

STONEHAM — Marie L. (Lazzarino) D’Avanzo, 61, died at home on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, following a lengthy decline. She was the wife of the late Leo F. D’Avanzo.

Mrs. D’Avanzo was born in Revere on Aug. 27, 1940, the daughter of the late John and Louise (Marcella) Lazzarino. She was a 1958 graduate of Stoneham High School.

Mrs. D’Avanzo was a retired realtor with Realty World/Schmidt Real Estate in Stoneham.

She is survived by a son, Joseph L. D’Avanzo of Wilmington; a daughter, Susan L. D’Avanzo of North Reading; a brother, Lazzarino of North Andover; and a sister, Susanne Hutcheson of Reading.

A funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, from the A.E. Finnegan & Son Home for Funerals, 322 Main St., Stoneham, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Stoneham. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Patrick T. Culleton, 51, of Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — Patrick Thomas Culleton, 51, died suddenly on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Chelsea.

Born in Lowell 0n Nov. 22, 1949, he was the son of the late Alice (Godsell) and Edward Mark Culleton. He was educated in Malden and graduated from Malden Catholic High School. He continued his education at Merrimack College graduating in 1974 with a bachelor of science degree in physics. He was a longtime resident of Tewksbury, where he was a communicant of St. William’s Church.

Mr. Culleton worked as a longshoreman for 25 years as a member of the Boston Shipping Association- International Longshoreman’s Association Local 799. He enjoyed all types of music. In addition, he played the guitar and entertained at area nursing homes.

He is survived by three sons, Patrick Thomas Culleton, Jr. and Mark Paul Culleton both of Malden, Ian Edward Culleton of Goffstown, N.H.; three sisters; Rose Marling Bussard of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Frances C. Anderson and her husband George E. Anderson of Tewksbury and Ann Mary Micheletti and her husband Richard L. Micheletti of Point Pleasant, N.J.; a brother-in-law; James Franklin Marling of Shadyside, Ohio and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the father of the late Jennifer Culleton who died in 1977.

The funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 27 from the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, Tewksbury, with a funeral Mass celebrated at St. William’s Church. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Thomas J. Dempsey

CONCORD — Thomas J. Dempsey, 81, a lifelong Concord resident, died Oct. 22, 2001, at Emerson Hospital in Concord.

He was born in Concord on Jan. 1, 1920, the son of the late John J. and Anna C. (Moreau) Dempsey. He attended Concord schools and Concord High School.

During World War II, Mr. Dempsey served in the U.S. Army as a private in the Coast Artillery in Hawaii. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon.

In 1993 and 1997 he achieved a lifelong dream of returning to Hawaii and Pearl Harbor where he had been stationed 50 years earlier.

He was a retired 33-year employee of the town of Concord Highway Department.

Since his childhood, among his activities was a daily walk to downtown Concord to visit friends and take in the scenery of his beloved hometown.

Mr. Dempsey was active with the Concord Council on Aging and impaired vision groups.

He is survived by three brothers, Edward Dempsey of Lexington, Robert Dempsey of Arlington, and Arthur Dempsey of Concord; a niece; two grandnieces; and several cousins.

He was the brother of the late John Dempsey and Mary Luhaink.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Oct. 26, from the Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Home in Concord, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Church. Interment was in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord.

Concord’s town flag will be flown on at half-staff on Friday in honor of Mr. Dempsey’s World War II military service.

Jennie S. Ortolano

LITTLETON — Jennie S. (Alessi) Ortolano, 94, of Littleton, formerly of Arlington, died Oct. 19, 2001, at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton. She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Ortolano.

Mrs. Ortolano was a communicant of St. Brigid’s Church in Lexington.

She is survived by three sons, Angelo J. Ortolano of Chelmsford, Dominic J. Ortolano and his wife Kathryn M. of Brewer, Maine, and Joseph A. Ortolano and his wife Ninfa S. of Lexington; two daughters C. Jean Coates of Lexington, and Sally E. Christle and her husband Henry G. of Littleton; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late Angelina Cappuccio and Mary Fiorenza; and the mother-in-law of the late Mary Ortolano and Norman Coates.

A funeral was held Oct. 23, from the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brigid’s Church. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Ortolano’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Juliette Pian

Juliette (Fan) Pian, 80, died Thursday at her home in Lexington from colon cancer. She was the widow of Charles H. C. Pian.

Mrs. Pian was born in Tienjing, China, the daughter of a university president. Her dedication to education and international understanding was shaped by her father's efforts to hold secret classes in their home, in the setting of on-going battling during the Japanese invasion of China during World War II. She studied chemistry at Fu-Jen (Catholic) University in Beijing, where she was selected University Queen and graduated second in her class in 1943. In 1947 she published her graduate work on the respiratory effects of sulfones, chemotherapy drugs.

After moving to Taipei in 1946, Mrs. Pian directed a research laboratory at the Taiwan Medical and Chemical Supply Company, and taught chemistry and physics at St. Emelda's School. With support from the Vatican, Mrs. Pian and several fellow-alumni of the original Fu-Jen in Beijing founded a new Fu-Jen University in Taiwan. She also established the Fan-Fan and HC Pian Scholarship Foundation there to ensure continued educational opportunities for future generations.

Mrs. Pian emigrated to the Boston area in 1957. She worked in several research laboratories and held patents for many of her innovations. Of note, in the 1960s, as a scientist at Itek Corporation in Lexington, she collaborated on the developmental research of lens and imaging systems used on reconnaissance aircraft and satellites. In the 1970s she pursued studies in computer science at Lowell Institute-M.I.T. and then worked as a programmer and systems analyst for local technology companies. Before her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Pian was an executive with Wang Laboratories and led delegations to mainland China to help introduce computer technology to China and to bolster communication and understanding between the two countries.

Mrs. Pian was as passionate about her hobbies as she was about her work. She was a synchronized swimmer, competed in the Bay State Games, and became a licensed American Synchronization coach. She also enjoyed photography, woodworking, tailoring and collected Chinese art and orchids. She was also one of the original organizers of the Chinese Language School in Boston.

Mrs. Pian is survived by her children, Carlson and Sally of Newton, Josie and Douglas Breeden of Chapel Hill, N.C. and May Pian-Smith and Frank Smith of Lexington; two brothers, Fred Fan of San Jose, Calif., and Johnson Fan of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Fan Rong and Fan Hwa of Beijing China; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Burial will be private and a memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington.

Anthony J. Roberto Sr.

Anthony J. Roberto Sr., died Oct. 18, 2001, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was the husband of the late Virginia L. (Kelley) Roberto.

He was born in Arlington, the son of the late Michael and Rosina (Aurilio) Roberto.

Mr. Roberto was employed for many years as a mechanic in the construction industry at many locations in greater Boston and lived in Arlington for over 50 years and in Lexington for four years.

He is survived by a son, Anthony Roberto Jr. and his wife Maureen of Marlborough; two daughters, Rose Ann Hamed and her husband Joseph of Wallingford, Conn., and Georgianna Zagarella and her husband John of Medford; three brothers, Samuel Roberto of Winchester, Milio Roberto of Arlington, and Victor Roberto of Arlington; two sisters, Jennie Marolda of Arlington, and Mary LaPuma of Arlington; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was the father of the late Donna O’Leary, the brother of the late Carmela Luongo, Samuel Roberto and Joseph Roberto.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 22, in St. Agnes Church in Arlington. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton.

Arrangements were under the care of the Dello Russo Funeral Home, Medford.

Stephen J. Straggas

Stephen J. Straggas, 78, formerly of Waltham, died Oct. 19, 2001, at his Concord home. He was the husband of Christine (Makrys) Straggas.

He was born in Waltham on Feb. 7, 1923, the son of the late John C. and Constance (Harakakas) Straggas. He attended Waltham schools and graduated from Waltham High School in 1941.

During World War II, Mr. Straggas served in the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate second class aboard several ships in the Pacific theater of operations. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and American Theatre Ribbon.

He retired in 1985 after more than 35 years of employment as an electrician at Raytheon Corp. in Waltham and Lowell.

A longtime Concord resident, he was a life member of the Waltham American Legion Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He was also an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Taxiarchae-Archangels in Watertown.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, he is survived by a son, Jonathan Straggas of Concord; four daughters, Constance and Cynthia, both of Concord, Catherine of Philadelphia, Pa., and Christina Perri and her husband John of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two brothers, Peter Straggas and his wife Albina of Waltham, and Chris Straggas of Charlton; two sisters, Ann Cardillo and her husband Joseph of Waltham, and Nora Koronas of Cambridge; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Nicholas Alexis of West Newton; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Oct. 23 from the Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Home in Concord, followed by a funeral service in the Greek Orthodox Church, Taxiarchae-Archangels in Watertown. Interment was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, with full military honors.

Concord’s town flag was flown at half-staff Oct. 23 in honor of Mr. Straggas service to his country during World War II.

David McIlhenny

David McIlhenny, 67, of Carlisle, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in Ohio. He was the husband of Sandra (Nadeau) McIlhenny.

He was the son of Eleanor (Hopwood) and the late Isbell Franklin McIlhenny.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Scott and Craig McIlhenny, both of Carlisle; one brother, William McIlhenny of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother-in-law of Richard Sullivan of Alabama, Dan Nadeau of Bradford, Lorraine Peck of Andover and Anne McIlhenny of Louisiana. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert McIlhenny of Louisiana.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 26 at St. Irene’s Church, 181 East St., Carlisle.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the A. Craig McIlhenny Supplemental Needs Trust, PO Box 586, Carlisle, MA 01741.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Blessing Cremation Center, Mentor, Ohio.
