Lawrence P. Flaherty, 70, of Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — Lawrence P. Flaherty, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Woburn on May 6, 1931, the son of the late Leonard J. and Kathryn R. Flaherty. He graduated from Woburn High School, Class of 1950. Mr. Flaherty was a Wilmington resident for many years, recently moving to Tewksbury.

Mr. Flaherty enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1950, rising to the rank of staff sergeant during the Korean War. He earned the Korean service medal with three stars, Korean PUC, and Good Conduct medals.

He was employed in various positions with Brockway Smith Company of Andover, beginning in 1955, until an injury resulting from an industrial accident forced him to retire in 1985. While employed, Mr. Flaherty was a union shop steward and a trustee for Teamster Local No. 379 from 1972 to 1976.

Mr. Flaherty was very active with the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Lowell Council, serving most notably as scoutmaster of Troop 58 from 1973 to 1984, sponsored by St. Dorothy’s Church. In 1984, Mr. Flaherty was recognized for his outstanding leadership and service receiving the highest adult leadership award, the " Silver Beaver. " He also served as chairman of Greater Lowell Council’s Catholic Lay Committee from 1979 to 1988.

The town of Wilmington elected Mr. Flaherty to represent them as a member of the Shawsheen Valley Regional School Committee in 1977, for two terms. He also served on the Wilmington Library Board of Trustees from 1984 to 1996.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence C. Flaherty and his wife Diane C. of Norton, and James A. Flaherty and his wife Diane M. of Wilmington; two daughters, Eileen M. Flannery and her husband Thomas of Homosassa, Fla., and Ellen H. Ohlenbusch and her husband Alvin of Charlestown; a brother, Robert Flaherty of Bellingham, Wash.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Oct. 24, from the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home in Wilmington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Dorothy’s Church. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Jennie S. Ortolano, 94, leaves family in Chelmsford

LITTLETON — Jennie S. (Alessi) Ortolano, 94, of Littleton, formerly of Arlington, died Oct. 19, 2001, at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton. She was the wife of the late Joseph C. Ortolano.

Mrs. Ortolano was a communicant of St. Brigid’s Church in Lexington.

She is survived by three sons, Angelo J. Ortolano of Chelmsford, Dominic J. Ortolano and his wife Kathryn M. of Brewer, Maine, and Joseph A. Ortolano and his wife Ninfa S. of Lexington; two daughters C. Jean Coates of Lexington, and Sally E. Christle and her husband Henry G. of Littleton; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Angelina Cappuccio and Mary Fiorenza; and the mother-in-law of the late Mary Ortolano and Norman Coates.

A funeral was held Oct. 23, from the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brigid’s Church. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

George W. Laurendeau, 81, leaves family in Chelmsford

LEXINGTON — George W. Laurendeau, 81, a 44-year resident of Lexington, died at his home on Oct. 18, 2001, of pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Stella (Chronowski) Laurendeau.

He was born in Somerville.

Mr. Laurendeau enjoyed a long and successful career with General Motors Truck & Coach Division, retiring after 42 years as zone service manager.

A devout Catholic, he and his wife were very active in St. Brigid’s Church where he was a eucharistic minister for many years. As an assistant to the pastor for more than a decade, he was instrumental in accomplishing many of the renovations and repairs necessary to the maintenance of St. Brigid’s buildings and grounds.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by three sons, George W. Laurendeau and his wife Linda of Chelmsford, John F. Laurendeau and his wife Claire of Burlington, and James R. Laurendeau and his wife Kimberly of Chelmsford; two daughters, Helen M. Doherty and her husband Joseph of Holly Hill, Fla., and Diane B. Lima and her husband James of Nashua, N.H.; a brother, Alfred Laurendeau of Quincy; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Cora Adams, Joseph, Edmund, and John Laurendeau.

Georgia Kostoulakos, 81, leaves family in Chelmsford

LOWELL — Georgia (Vrouhas) Kostoulakos, 81, a lifelong Lowell resident, died Oct. 27, 2001, at Lowell General Hospital. She was the wife of Charles Kostoulakos of Lowell.

She was born in Lowell on Feb. 3, 1920, the daughter of the late Spiro and Theodora (Palengos) Vrouhas. Mrs. Kostoulakos was educated in Lowell schools and was a graduate of the Lowell Academy of Beauty and was the former owner of Georgia’s Beauty Salon.

Mrs. Kostoulakos was an active member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Our Savior of Lowell and the church’s Philoptochos Society. She was a former member of the Greater Lowell Cosmetology Association and an active member of the Mother’s Club of the church.

In addition to her husband of 55 years, she is survived by three sons, James Kostoulakos of North Andover, Spencer Kostoulakos and Peter Kostoulakos, both of Lowell; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Koulas of Chelmsford; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Peter Vrouhas, Gloria Zaroulis, Charles Vrouhas, Olga Tsoukalas, and James Vrouhas.

A funeral was held Oct. 30, from the Pappas Funeral Home in Lowell, followed by services at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell. Interment was in Westlawn Cemetery.

Charles E. Geoffroy, 81, of Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD — Charles E. " Charlie " Geoffroy, 81, died Oct. 25, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Juliette D. (Van Dinter) Geoffroy.

He was born in Lowell on Dec. 6, 1919, the son of the late Philippe and Rosana (Geoffroy) Geoffroy. He was one of 17 children and was educated at Lowell Trade High School.

Mr. Geoffroy served in the Army during World War II, seeing action in the Battle of Rhineland and the Central Europe Campaign.

He owned and operated Jack’s Used Cars & Parts until he sold it to Peter Foley.

At his 80th birthday party, he was given citations from the state House of Representatives and Senate.

He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by twin daughters, Jessica Hansen and her husband Jeremy of Clinton, Conn., and Jacqueline Wood and her husband Timothy of Georgetown (all four are serving with the Coast Guard); three sons, Jordan Geoffroy, a senior at Nashoba Technical High School, and twins Jason and Justin Geoffroy, both sophomores at Nashoba Technical High School, all of North Chelmsford; five brothers, Gerard Geoffroy, Armand Geoffroy, and Henry Geoffroy and his wife Theresa, all of Lowell, Camille Geoffroy and his wife Rita, and Ernest Geoffroy and his wife Pauline, all of Dracut; four sisters, Marie Neol, Cecile Boisvert, Juliette Dumais and her husband Paul, and Laurette Dubois and her husband Maurice, all of Lowell; a grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Yvette, Jeannine, Gerard, Philippe, Maurice, Andre and Roland Geoffroy, all of Lowell.

A funeral was held Oct. 29, from the Dolan Funeral Home in Chelmsford, followed by a funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chelmsford.

Katherine M. Flynn, 89, leaves family in Chelmsford

LOWELL — Katherine M. (McKinney) Flynn, 89, died Oct. 21, 2001, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell. She was the wife of the late Thomas F. Flynn, who died in 1984.

She was born in Norwood on April 10, 1912, the daughter of the late Earl and Theresa (Downes) McKinney. Mrs. Flynn graduated from Lowell High School and the Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing.

Before retiring, Mrs. Flynn was a registered nurse with the city of Lowell Health Department and a school nurse for 20 years. She was a member of the association of State, County and Municipal Employees of Massachusetts.

Mrs. Flynn was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church in Lowell.

She is survived by two sons, James K. Flynn and his wife Carolyne of Chelmsford, and Robert F. Flynn and his wife Noreen of Groton; a daughter, Mary Richard and her husband Robert of Dracut; a sister, Agnes Anderson of Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Thomas F. Flynn Jr., who died in 1995, and the sister of the late Earl McKinney.

A funeral was held Oct. 25, from the O’Donnell Funeral Home in Lowell, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Margaret’s Church. Interment was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Lowell.

Frank E. Wazlowski, 80, of Tewksbury

TEWKSBURY — Frank E. Wazlowski, 80, a Tewksbury resident since 1965, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at his home following a battle with cancer. He was the husband of Josephine (Rudzis) Wazlowski.

He was born in South Boston on Oct. 21, 1921, the son of the late Peter and Mary (Zak) Wazlowski. He was raised in South Boston and Boston’s Roxbury section.

Mr. Wazlowski was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He retired from Fisher Scientific Co. in Waltham, where he was employed as an optical technician for more than 30 years.

He was a communicant of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury. Mr. Wazlowski enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael E. Wazlowski and his wife Jo-Anne (Levins) of Connecticut; a daughter, Karen M. Gertner and her husband Jeffrey of New York; three sisters, Stella Maraget of Acton, Jeanne Popsuj of Florida, and Victoria Maraget of Connecticut; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was held Oct. 30, from the Tewksbury Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass in St. William’s Church. Interment was in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Boston.
