Charles Luckman helped design Hub's Pru Center

Thursday, January 28, 1999

LOS ANGELES - Charles Luckman, an industrialist and architect who helped design the Prudential Center in Boston, New York's Madison Square Garden and several Los Angeles landmarks, died Tuesday. He was 89.

Mr. Luckman, whose architectural firm designed the original control tower at Los Angeles International Airport and his namesake $22 million Arts Complex at California State University, Los Angeles, died in his sleep at his Los Angeles home, said Nancy Hogan, executive vice president of Luckman Management Co.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Luckman was trained as an architect but first found success in the soap business.

Time magazine put the soap salesman on its cover in 1937 as the ``Boy Wonder" of American industry.

He became president of Pepsodent Co. at age 30 and president of Lever Brothers seven years later, where he influenced the design of the soap maker's 21 - story headquarters, Lever House.

New York's Landmark Commission later proclaimed Lever House, the first glass and steel skyscraper on Park Avenue, ``among the first, as well as the most famous, corporate expressions of the Modern International Style in America."

Presidents from Harry S. Truman to George Bush asked for Mr. Luckman's advice on philanthropic or volunteer efforts such as the Citizen's Food Committee, a post - World War II effort to bring food to Europe, Hogan said.

In 1950, he left Lever Brothers and established his architecture firm in Los Angeles, where he mixed his design ideas with conservative business principles, introducing market research to architecture.

In 1982, he became the first architect to be awarded the American Management Association's Gantt Medal for distinguished achievement of management as a community service, Hogan said.

When Mr. Luckman built buildings, he asked what workers in an office building or hospital patients or sports fans wanted.

His Aloha Stadium was the first sports complex with stands that moved on an ``air film" to provide sight lines for both football and baseball.

Other projects included Aloha Stadium in Hawaii, the original Los Angeles Convention Center and the Manned Space Craft Center in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Luckman is survived by his wife, Harriet; and sons, Charles Jr., James and Stephen; eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
