Shirley C. Crosby, 90

Osterville - Shirley C. Crosby, 90, a lifelong resident of Osterville and the oldest living member of the Osterville Fire Department, died December 28, 1997 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Helen J. (Fitzgerald) Crosby.

A lifelong resident of Osterville, he was the oldest living member of the Osterville Fire Department. He had an electrical business for a number of years and was an electrical inspector for the town of Barnstable until his retirement in 1970.

Mr. Crosby was an avid sailor, boater and golfer for many years. He was a skilled craftsman and, in his later years, enjoyed building models of the Crosby Cat Boats and Wianno Seniors, which he sailed in his youth. The Crosby Cat Boat was designed by his grandfather, Daniel Crosby.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Patricia C. Pemberton of Osterville and Gail A. Trafton of Quincy; a sister, Josephine Hallett of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; six grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private. Memorial donations may be made to C&O Volunteers, 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

Kenneth Crosby Dottridge, 96

Hyannis Kenneth Crosby Dottridge, 96, died December 27, 1997, a month after his wife of 64 years, Mary K. (Wheaton) Dottridge, passed away.

Mr. Dottridge died at the Fairlawn Nursing Home in Lexington after a long illness.

Born and raised in Cotuit, Mr. Dottridge was educated in Barnstable schools. He married in 1933 and moved to Hyannis, where he lived until his death.

In the early 1920s, he worked for Robertson's Garage in Hyannis. From the late 1920s until 1935, he was a chauffeur for then-U.S. Rep. Charles Gifford. In 1935 he became equipment supervisor for the town of Barnstable. A decade later, he started the Hyannis Welding Service, which he operated until his retirement in 1973.

Mr. Dottridge was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hyannis and a member of the Mariners Lodge AF & AM in Cotuit. His hobbies included woodworking, ornamental welding, gardening and furniture restoration. Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held December 30 in the First Baptist Church, 486 Main St., Hyannis. Burial followed in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit,

Helen Flores, 86

Hyannis Helen (Merrill) Flores, 86, of Hyannis, formerly of Provincetown, died December 29, 1997 at The Center for Optimum Care Mashpee.

She was the wife of the late Frank Flores.

Born in Provincetown, she was a graduate of Provincetown High School. She lived in Provincetown until moving to Hyannis in 1988. She worked for the Cape Cod National Seashore in its maintenance department for 10 years until her retirement in the late 1960s. She wintered in Hollywood, Fla., for several years.

Mrs. Flores was a member of the Portuguese American Civic League, Provincetown Senior Citizens and St. Mary of the Harbor Church, all in Provincetown. She also worked with the Provincetown Civil Defense for many years.

Mrs. Flores enjoyed ceramics and flower gardening.

Surviving are a son, Francis A. Carlos of Hyannis; two daughters, Eileen Glover anti Roseanne Poole, both of New Hampshire; a sister, Madeline Taves of Provincetown; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held January 2 in the Provincetown Cemetery.

Virginia Hixon, 83

Plymouth Virginia (Abercrombie) Hixon, 83, formerly of Barnstable, died January 2, 1997 at the Beverly Manor Nursing Home following a long illness.

She was the wife of G. Malcolm Hixon, who died in 1993.

Born in Westfield, N.J., Mrs. Hixon moved to Braintree as a young child. She attended Braintree public schools, Thayer Academy in Braintree and William and Mary College in Williams-burg, Va.

Mrs. Hixon worked at home as a professional typist. She was a summer resident of Barnstable for many years and moved there permanently in the mid-1970s. She moved to the Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth in 1995.

She was a member of the Barnstable Grubs, Cape Cod Conservatory of Music, Hyannis Garden Club, Upper Cape Cod Republican Club and the Universal Unitarian Church in Barnstable. In Braintree, Mrs. Hixon was a member of the MSPCC, Braintree Republican Club, Braintree Philergians and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Hixon is survived by a son, M. David Hixon of Sandwich; two daughters, Judith Dinsmore of Plymouth and Joanne K. Fitch of Mount Vernon, Wash.; a brother, Robert Abercrombie of Calais, Maine; a sister, Priscella Schott of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was private.

John P. Hoar, 79

Plaistow, N.H. - Maj. John P. Hoar, 79, a professional engineer, died December 30, 1997 at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, N.H.

He was the husband of Helen R. (Powers) Hoar, who died this past September.

Born and educated in Haverhill, Mass., he graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1937 with a degree in steam and electrical engineering and in 1940 with a degree in structural engineering. He also graduated from the Lowell Institute at MIT in 1939 with a degree in mechanical engineering and in 1947 with a degree in electrical engineering.

From 1938 to 1940, he served in the Army National Guard. He saw active duty in the Army from 1940 to 1946 during World War II. An artillery and infantry officer, he was also involved in fighter pilot training. Mr. Hoar was in the reserves from 1946 until his retirement in 1978. He was a life member and former board member of the Veterans Association of First Corps of Cadets.

Mr. Hoar was a registered professional engineer. From 1937, he was a steam utilization engineer for Boston Edison; from 1947, he was heating engineer for Cornell University. In 1952, he went to work for Polaroid Corp., where he was a department manager and senior principal engineer for European Products Facilities. He worked closely with Dr. Edwin Land with many special projects. When he retired in 1982, he was utilities manager.

Mr. Hoar married in 1943. The couple lived in Somerville, Mass., Ithaca, N:Y. and Newton, Mass., before moving to Arlington, Mass., in 1953, where they lived until moving to Centerville in 1986. Last month, he moved to Plaistow to live with his daughter.

Mr. Hoar was a charter member of the Central Engineering Society; a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers; and a life member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and a board member of its Boston Chapter.

Mr. Hoar was coach, manager and president of the Arlington Little League. He was a Eucharistic minister at St. James Church in Arlington and St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Reserve Officer's Association, Osterville Men's Club and Centerville Civic Association. He was junior vice commander and commander of the Military Order of World Wars, Cape Cod Chapter. He was on the sub-committee of Energy and Environment for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are a son, William P. Hoar of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, EiIeen T. Dube of Plaistow; four sisters, Marion Gavin of Hingham, Mass., Elizabeth Hoar and Patricia Williams, both of Arlington, Mass., and Dorothy Colbert of Concord; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late John P. Hoar Jr., Kevin Hoar and Mary Kathleen Hoar.

A funeral was held January 2 at the Donne, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Leo S. Hogan

Yarmouthport - Leo S. Hogan, a Hyannis postmaster in 1972, died December 30, 1997 at the Chelsea Soldier's Home in Chelsea after a long illness.

He was the husband of Frances Hogan for 49 years.

Born and raised in the Boston area, he was a graduate of Boston Latin High School and Newman Prep School. In 1942 he entered the Navy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He received two service stars for his efforts in the Asiatic theater and the liberation of the Philippine Islands.

In 1945 Mr. Hogan began working for the United States Postal Service in South Boston. After moving to Cummaquid in 1951, he transferred to the Hyannis Post Office. He was appointed postmaster at Hyannis in 1972. He was also named Hyannis sectional center coordinator over 40 post offices in the Lower and Mid-Cape areas. He retired 15 years ago.

Mr. Hogan was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and loved boating and fishing, particularly scalloping and 1obstenng.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Kathleen J. Teague and Karen J. O'Connell, both of Yarmouthport; a son, Kevin L. Hogan; three sisters, Mary Graham and Ellen Hogan, both of Roslindale, and Ruth Costa of Worcester; two brothers, James Hogan of Sandwich and Charles Hogan of Yarmouthport; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held January 3 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Chapel, Summer Street, Yarmouthport. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2 White 's Path, South Yarmouth, MA 02664; or to the charity of one's choice.

Melissa I. Hokans, 23

Plymouth - Melissa J. Hokans, 23, of Hyannisport and Plymouth, died December 31, 1997 at the Mayflower Child Care Nursing Facility in Plymouth after a long illness.

She was born in Concord, the daughter of Eric H. Hokans of West Barnstable and Carol A. Kelshaw of Hyannisport.

Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister, Julie A. Hokans.

A memorial service was held January 3 at the Mayflower Child Care Unit, South Street, Plymouth.

Arnold W. Kheary, 71

Edgartown Arnold W. Kheary, 71, a merchant mariner and professional carpenter, died January 1, 1998 at his home in Edgartown after a long illness.

He was the husband of Shirley F. (Crone) Kheary for 47 years.

He was born in Middleboro.

He served in the merchant marines as AB during World War II, until 1952. He was a merchant mariner for 10 years. During this time, he and his best friend Capt. John Neary were aboard the ship SS American Seaman in 1943 and both survived a torpedo hit.

In 1965, Mr. Kheary went back to sea as boatswain mate to work for the University of Rhode Island for four months aboard the Trident to study the sounds of whales.

Mr. Kheary was a professional carpenter. He specialized in home building and cabinetry. He built many homes in West Bridgewater and on Martha's Vineyard.

Mr. Kheary moved to Martha's Vineyard in 1968. He and his son, John A. Kheary, formed a business partnership to create Keyland Corp., which is still very successful today.

Mr. Kheary's work and craftsmanship took him to the the Greenbriar in Virginia, and the Fairfax and Tremont hotels in Chicago and New York, among many other places, to do classic interior work and cabinetry. He was a master craftsman and cathedral carpenter.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John A. Kheary of Edgartown and Paul Kheary of San Diego; two daughters, Colleen Duffy of Marstons Mills and Lyette Kauffman of Sandwich; and five grandchildren.

The funeral Mass was held on January 5 at St. Anne's Church, West Bridgewater.
