Ethel J. Lovejoy, 101

Alexandria, Va. - Ethel J. "Nini" (MacNaught) Lovejoy, 101, a former resident of South Wellfleet and Centerville, died December 22, 1997 of congestive heart failure at the Hospice of Northern Virginia.

She was the wife of Sefton Lovejoy, who died in1974.

A native of Hyde Park, Mass., she lived in South Wellfleet for 20 years and moved to Virginia after her husband died, living half of the year with her daughter Priscilla and the other half in Centerville with her daughter until 1995.

She was a homemaker and a volunteer for many nursing homes and hospitals.

Surviving are two daughters, Mabel Murray of Centerville and Priscilla Morgan of Annandale; five grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice; or to Hospice of Northern Virginia, Acute Care Unit Hospice Center, 4715 North 15th St., Arlington, VA 22205.

Eleanor E. Mahoney,90

Worcester Eleanor E. (Vallender) Mahoney, 90, one of the earliest woman graduates of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, a retired dentist and resident of Centerville for many years, died December 11, 1997 at Salisbury Nursing Home in Worcester.

She was the wife of the late John E. Mahoney.

Born in Boston, she graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1930 and entered her father's general dentistry practice. With her father and brother, she practiced general dentistry and oral surgery in Boston for more than 40 years.

She lived in Newton and Milton and retired to Centerville, where she lived for many years. After retiring, she was active as a volunteer for 20 years, serving at Cape Cod Community College, Cape Cod Hospital Thrift Shop, the Red Cross and the American Cancer Society Thrift Shop.

Surviving are a son, Robert Bruce Mahoney of Arlington, and a granddauther, Grace Alanna Mahoney.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. January 10 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 S. Main Street, Centerville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, 136 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02111.

Vicky L. Mendes, 43

South Yarmouth Vicky Lynn Mendes, 43, a homemaker, died December 26, 1997 at her home in South Yarmouth after a long illness.

She was the wife of Henry Mendes.

Mrs. Mendes was born in Barnstable and raised and educated in Harwich.

She was a devoted homemaker.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Ivy Mendes of Yarmouth; five sons, Arthur Mendes, Brian Mendes, Christian Mendes and Henry Mendes, all of Yarmouth, and Troy Mendes of Connecticut; four brothers, Michael Souza, Henry Galvin, Douglas Galvin and Bruce Souza, all of Hyannis; five sisters, Carlene Galvin and Nicole Galvin, both of Virginia, Veronica Miller of Sandwich, Lyvonne Galvin of Cotuit and Trisha Souza of Yarmouth.

A funeral Mass was held December 29 at Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich. Burial was in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Harwich.

Earle Goodrich Phillips Sr., 94

Bass River - Earle Goodrich Phillips Sr, 94, a resident of Bass River, died December 30, 1997 at the Hospice House in Concord, N.H.

He was the husband of Elizabeth (Holway) Phillips for 59 years.

Born in Wenham, he was a graduate of Eastern Radio Institute and the Lowell School at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was employed by Western Union Telegraph Co., retiring as district plant manager in 1964.

Mr. Phillips was a ham radio operator with the call letters WIUUM and a life member of the Society of Wireless Pioneers. He was a radio operator of oceanographic vessels and traveled the world. He was also a member of the Hyannis Masonic Lodge.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Earle G. Phillips Jr. of Barrington, R.I.; a daughter, Gail Heil of Contoocook, N.H.; and four granddaughters.

A memorial service was held on January 3 at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord, N.H. Burial was in Bay View Cemetery, Sandwich.

James E. Poss, 66

Osterville- James E. Poss, 66, a retired sales executive, died December 27, 1997 at his home in Osterville.

He was the husband of Mari Fritzche-Poss.

Born in Canton, Ohio, he was a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland. He lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio, for 38 years and spent summers in Osterville since 1969. He moved to Osterville permanently three years ago.

A sales executive, Mr. Poss worked at Van Huffel Tub in Warren, Ohio, for 26 years and Grinnell Corp. for 12 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of the Cleveland Skating Club.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Peter C. Poss II of Cleveland, James E. Poss of Hyannis and M. Joseph Poss of New York City; a daughter, Ann Mari Poss of Falmouth, Maine; a sister, Roseann Zwick of Louisville, Ohio; and five nieces and two nephews.

A memorial Mass was held January 3 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.

Clark W. Souza, 64

Centerville Clark W. Souza, 64, a lifelong Cape Cod resident, died December 28, 1997 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a long illness.

He was the husband of Lois (Thompson) Souza.

Mr. Souza was born in Osterville and educated in Barnstable schools. He served in the National Guard during the Korean War.

A maintenance worker and equipment operator for the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Water Department for more than 25 years, Mr. Souza retired in 1995.

He was a member of the Osterville Veterans Association.

Besides his wife, Mr. Souza leaves three sisters, Alice Alger of Osterville, Helen Short of Sayville, N.Y. and Frances Zabel of Washington Township, NJ.; a stepson, Roy A. Kurra of Bernardston; a stepdaughter, Virginia A. Martin of Las Vegas; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held December 30 in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, Marstons Mills. Burial was private.

Shirley Therrien, 63

Westport Shirley (Shepley) Therrien, 63, died unexpectedly December 26, 1997 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, while visiting her family in Barnstable.

She was the wife of the late Paul E. Therrien.

Mrs. Therrien was born and raised in New Bedford and spent almost all her life there. In 1993, she moved to Westport.

She was employed as a supervisor in the Massachusetts Public Welfare Department. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Lunds Corner, New Bedford, and served as church secretary. Mrs. Therrien was also a troop leader for the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Mrs. Therrien leaves two sons, Gary Therrien of Westport and Brian Therrien of Boston; a daughter, Linda Constas of Barnstable; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held December 29 in the First Congregational Church in New Bedford, with burial following in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Bedford.

Edward Thorgersen, 95

Wolfeboro, N.H. - Edward Thorgersen, 95, who retired to Osterville in 1959, died December 22, 1997 after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Frances Meyn Thorgersen.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., he lived in the New York City area most of his life. He began his career as an NBC radio announcer in 1927. He was affiliated with Fox Movietone News as a news and sports broadcaster in 1932; producer and editor of sports with March of Time in 1950; and an independent producer for television and radio commercials in 1952.

In addition, he was a news commentator for Dumont Television in New York City until retiring to Osterville in 1959. He moved to Wolfeboro, N.H., in 1995 to be near family.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Carla Copeland of Wolfeboro and Priscilla Kobbe of Beaverton, Ore., and Borrego Springs, Calif.; a sister, Edna Wright of Aberdeen, N.J.; a brother, Arthur Thorgersen of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were private. Memorial donations may be made to VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County and Vicinity, P.O. Box 1620, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Ellery Sherman Tobey, 50

Hyannis - Ellery Sherman Tobey, 50, a lifelong Cape resident, died December 30, 1997 in a fire at his home in Hyannis.

Mr. Tobey was born and raised in Hyannis. He graduated from Barnstable High School, where he was an outstanding football, basketball and baseball player.

He enlisted in the Army in 1965. Mr. Tobey served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969.

He was a painter and a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. Surviving are his parents, Edgar and Cecelia Tobey of Santuit; a daughter, Ebony Jenkins of Ohio, two brothers, Edgar Tobey of Centerville and Marty Tobey of Malden; eight sisters, Sharon Kennedy of Hyannis, Deborah DeBarros of Hyannis, Cecelia Gomes of Harwich, Norene Smith of Dennis, Vanessa Mendes of Mashpee, Michelle Russell of Hyannis, Laura Miranda of Dennis and Stephanie Roderick of Hyannis; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private.
