Dr. Charles L. Erickson, 70

South Dennis - Dr. Charles L. Erickson, 70, a physician for 40 years, died February 18, 1998 at the Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster after a long illness.

He was the husband of Lorraine A. (Thomas) Erickson, who died in 1988.

Born in Worcester, Dr. Erickson lived in Auburn for 18 years, in Maine and Boston for several years and in Oxford for 37 years before moving to South Dennis in 1992. He was a graduate of Worcester Academy in 1945; Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1948; Tufts Medical School in 1953 and a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity.

Dr. Erickson served a rotating internship at Worcester City Hospital and served as a resident in medicine at Worcester Memorial Hospital before starting his private practice in Oxford from 1955 to 1992. From 1992 to 1995, he was the attending physician for the Oxford Health Care Center in Oxford. He was also the school physician in Oxford for 34 years.

A World War II Navy veteran, Dr. Erickson served in the Pacific Theater. He served as the chairman of the Oxford Board of Health in 1962 and 1963; as medical director for Sandalwood Nursing Home in Oxford and Webster Nursing Home in Webster for many years and as the medical examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration 28 years.

He was a member of the Worcester District Medical Society; Massachusetts Medical Society; American Medical Association; Massachusetts and National Audubon Societies; Cape Cod Bird Club; Sierra Club and the Appalachian Mountain Club of New Hampshire.

Since returning to the Cape, his interests were mainly gourmet cooking, bird watching and the study of architecture.

Surviving are two sons, Peter B. Erickson of Oxford and Chris A. Erickson of South Yarmouth; three daughters, Karen L. Foote of Lexington, Jacqueline E. Mathers of Framingham and Jennifer J. Erickson of Hyannis; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of Mark G. Erickson, who died in 1963.

A funeral service was held February 21 at the First Congregational Church in Oxford. Burial was in St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford.

Georgia Ferguson, 97

Barnstable - Georgia (Cook) Ferguson, 97, a longtime resident of Cape Cod, died February 22, 1998 at her home after an illness.

She was the wife of the late Hugh S. Ferguson.

Mrs. Ferguson was born in Provincetown and grew up and attended school in Hyannis. She was a graduate of Wheaton College and, in 1925, earned a masters degree from Simmons College in Boston.

She lived in Belmont until 1964, when she moved to Barnstable. Mrs. Ferguson had summered on Wequaquet Lake for most of her life.

Mrs. Ferguson was an active member of the Massachusetts Audubon Society. She also did slide presentations on Cape Cod life and, in 1975, was honored by the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod for her enthusiastic efforts on behalf of the Cape. She carved decoys and enjoyed painting in oils.

She is survived by two sons, Hugh C. Ferguson of Boston and George W. Ferguson of Weston; two sisters, Hilda C. Swift of Centerville and Barbara Henry of Yarmouthport; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family.

John P. Garvey, 88

Dennisport - John P. "Jack" Garvey, 88, a retired factory foreman, died at home February 21, 1998 of an illness.

He was the husband of Alice (Crockett) Garvey, his wife of 62 years, who died in 1997.

Mr. Garvey was born, raised and educated in Boston. He lived in Watertown and worked for Artisan Industries in Waltham as a foreman until he retired in 1978. He moved to Dennisport after his retirement and was an avid world traveler and sports enthusiast.

Mr. Garvey is survived by a sister, Josephine Feeney of Arlington; and his adopted daughter, Lois Ann Demko and son-in-law, Patrick Demko of West Barnstable.

A Mass of Christian Burial was be celebrated February 23 in Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich. Burial was be in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree.

Charles A. "Gus" Harkins, 67

Hyannis - Charles A. "Gus" Harkins, 67, a chef and Korean War veteran, died at home February 18, 1998 after a long illness.

He was the husband of Barbara (Burgess) Harkins.

Born in Boston, he was educated at Boston College High School and attended Boston College. He worked as a chef at Tufts University for many years.

Mr. Harkins served during the Korean War, operating a military radio station in Newfoundland. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 206, Hyannis, and the Ham Radio Club of Barnstable and Mashpee and a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Hyannis Chapter.

He was a Nantucket Marine Operator and taught CCD classes at St. Francis Xavier Church.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Carl J. Harkins of Somerville and twin sons, John R. Harkins of California and Phillip E. Harkins of Hyannis; two daughters, Alice M. Harkins and Cheryl A. DeGrace, both of Hyannis; a sister, Sister Alice Marie S.B.S. of Philadelphia: five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held February 21 at the St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis. Burial was in Oak Neck Cemetery, Hyannis.

Willis A. Higgins, 39

Hyannis - Willis A. Higgins, 39, a self-employed systems analyst, died unexpectedly February 17, 1998 in Harwich.

He was the husband of Marie (Lavallee) Higgins.

Born in Somerville, Mr. Higgins lived in Harwich for many years before moving to Hyannis in 1983. He received a bachelor's degree in business information systems from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and a master's degree in computer science from Bentley College in Waltham.

Mr. Higgins was a self-employed systems analyst and had worked as a certified nurses aide. He enjoyed camping and skiing with his family.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his father, Evon Higgins of Marlboro; three sons, Andrew Higgins, Alex Higgins and Aaron Higgins, all of Hyannis; a daughter, Sasha Higgins of Hyannis; two sisters, Donna Driscoll of Marlboro and Sally Higgins of Bellingham, Wash.; and two nieces and two nephews.

Burial was private.

Phyllis Hopkins, 77

Hyannis - Phyllis (Burt) Hopkins, 77, a World War II Coast Guard veteran, show dog breeder, proofreader and advertising writer at WOCB radio, died February 17, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness.

Born in Newton, she was raised and educated in Needham. She graduated from Boston University, where she majored in journalism. She served in the Coast Guard during World War II, later living in Berlin where she worked at the Colonial Press.

Her final years were spent as a resident of Hyannis. Her greatest interests all of her lifetime was breeding, raising and showing pedigree dogs. Among the breeds she worked with were Pyrenees, Pekinese and Afghan hounds. She was registered in the American Kennel Club as Audax.

Mrs. Hopkins is survived by a daughter, Melissa "Miriam" Rubinoff of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a granddaughter and grandson.

A memorial service was held February 20 at the home of the deceased. Funeral services were private.

Natalie Kinne, 93

Centerville - Natalie (Bailey) Kinne, 93, former substitute teacher and tutor for handicapped students, died February 14, 1998 at the Windsor Nursing Home in South Yarmouth after a long illness.

She was the wife of Erold Kinne, who died in 1986.

Born in Vergennes, Vt., Mrs. Kinne graduated from Derby High School and Derby Academy Normal School, both in Vermont. She was a substitute teacher in Norwell and Barnstable schools for many years and also tutored handicapped students. She moved to Centerville in 1962 and lived there until 1990, when she entered the nursing home.

Mrs. Kinne was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Hyannis and the Hyannis Federated Church as well as their Women's Fellowship Group. She also volunteered at the church's summer lobster roll luncheons for many years. She enjoyed rug hooking, crewel as well as arts and crafts.

Surviving are a daughter, Janice Hanson of Skowhegan, Maine; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a niece and a nephew.

A graveside service was held February 19 in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Sylvia Moseley, 83

Fairhaven - Sylvia (Winsor) Moseley, 83, who leaves a son in Centerville, died February 20, 1998 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

She was the wife of the late Walter B. Moseley.

Mrs. Moseley was born and raised in Fairhaven. She attended the House in the Pines School and, in 1936, graduated from the University of Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst.

She worked in the family business, the Flying Cloud Farm in Acushnet, and assisted in the development of their prize-winning gladiolus and apples.

Mrs. Moseley had lived in Marion since 1956. She was a member of the Unitarian Memorial Church in Fairhaven, the Unitarian Society of Fairhaven, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society and the board of trustees of Riverside Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Grove of Winchester; one son, Walter W. Moseley of Centerville; one brother, Philip A. Winsor of Ocala, Florida; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held at the convenience of the family.

Robert Packer, 79

Cotuit - Robert Packer, 79, retired engineer and World War II Royal Air Force veteran, died February 14, 1998 at his home in Cotuit.

He was the husband of Hazel H. (Mills) Packer.

Born, raised and educated in London, England, Mr. Packer was an English veteran of World War II, serving in the Royal Air Force. He entered the British Air Ministry in London in 1941 and quickly rose through the ranks to be commissioned as a flight officer in 1944.

Mr. Packer served as a navigator and pilot and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the same year he left active duty in 1945, retiring at the rank of acting flight lieutenant. He was a pilot in civilian life for a few years after the war and also served in the Royal Air Force Reserves as a pilot until 1959.

After the war, Mr. Packer worked for De Havilland Guided Weapons Division in Herts, England, in aircraft and weapons engineering and later for English Electric in Stevenage, Herts, England, where he worked in guided weapons engineering until 1963.

In 1963 he moved his family to the United States and worked for RCA Aerospace in Hightstown, N.J., as an aerospace engineer. He retired from RCA in 1980, but worked as late as 1993 doing private consulting for companies, mostly relating to communication satellites.

Mr. Packer moved to Cotuit from Middletown, N.J., in 1984. He loved doing stained glass work, boating and woodworking. He also loved playing tennis and played up until just a couple of years ago.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Teresa J. Condas of Parlin, N.J., and Deborah A. Packer of Marstons Mills; a son, Malcolm J. Packer of Rochester, N.Y.; two grandsons; a niece and a grandnephew.

A memorial service was held February 21 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills.

Memorial donations may be made to the Thornton Burgess Society, 6 Discovery Hill Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537; or to a charity of one's choice.
