A. Irene Briggs, 93

Falmouth - A. Irene (Bowes) Briggs, 93, a telephone operator for New England Telephone for more than 40 years, died March 6, 1998 at JML Care Center in Falmouth after a brief illness.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she moved to Falmouth in the early 1920s. In 1933 she married Abner P. Briggs, who died in 1996.

She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Falmouth Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by two nephews, Thomas V. Aldert of Hyannis and Gerald Bowes of San Jose, Calif.; a niece, Judith Rockwood of California; three grandnieces, Katherine J.M. Aldert of Hyannis, Patricia Prochaska and Jean Nanius, both of Hawaii; and a grandnephew, Christopher M. Aldert of Hyannis.

The funeral was held March 11 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth Center, and was followed by a Mass in St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorials may be made to the Visiting Nursing Association of Upper Cape Cod, 67 Ter Heun Drive, Falmouth, MA 02540.

Paulo T. Costa, 86

West Hyannisport - Paulo T. Costa, 86, a retired fisherman and longtime resident of New Bedford, died March 3, 1998 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home, Centerville, following a long illness.

Born, raised and educated in New Bedford, he worked as a scalloper most of his life. He was a member of the New Bedford Fisherman's Union.

Mr. Costa retired in 1982 and later moved to the Cape where he had vacationed for many years.

He loved his dogs and enjoyed gardening, yard work and following politics.

Mr. Costa leaves one son, Joseph G. Costa of California; one sister, Marie T. Costa of West Hyannisport; two nieces; one nephew and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral was held March 7 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Committal services followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford.

Mary Furey, 88

Hyannis - Mary (Tait) Furey, 88, a retired medical records secretary, died March 3, 1998 at Cape Winds Rest Home in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Paul F. Furey.

Mrs. Furey was born and raised in Orkney Isles, Scotland, and moved to America in 1926, settling in Somerville.

She graduated from Somerville High School and from Boston University in 1930.

Mrs. Furey worked as a medical records secretary at Melrose Wakefield Hospital until marrying in 1947. She moved to Springfield and went back to work as a medical records secretary at the Wesson Memorial Hospital and Springfield Hospital.

Mrs. Furey retired in 1977 and moved to Hyannis in 1980.

A graveside service was held March 9 in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

James M. Healy, 47

Hyannis - James M. Healy, 47, a small-engine mechanic who was formerly of Chatham, died unexpectedly March 3, 1998.

He was the son of Pearl (Duff) Healy of Stafford Springs, Conn., and Joseph A. "Art" Healy of Chatham..

Mr. Healy was a small-engine mechanic and had worked as an interior house painter. He enjoyed shellfishing.

Besides his parents, Mr. Healy is survived by a brother, Milton P. Healy of Harwich; his paternal grandmother, Ella M. (Eldridge) Healy of Dennis; four sisters, Judith M. Jacobsen of West Palm Beach, Fla., Candice Mullin of Rockville, Conn., Michele L. Roy of Agawam and Tanya Mailman of Carville, Maine; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the brother of the late David A. Healy, Sandra P. Healy, Joseph A. Healy Jr. and Michael P. Healy.

A service was held March 10 in the Nickerson Funeral Home in Chatham, followed by burial in Seaside Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 100 North St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Alexander "Alex" Littlefield, 7

South Yarmouth - Alexander R. "Alex" Littlefield, 7, died March 5, 1998 at the New England Medical Center, Floating Hospital for Children, in Boston.

He was the son of Robert R. and Rebecca M. (McGann) Littlefield of South Yarmouth.

Born in Dorchester, Alex grew up in West Barnstable and Yarmouth. He was a student at Cape Cod Collaborative, a deaf and hard-of-hearing program in Marstons Mills.

Alex loved Walt Disney movies and videos and enjoyed "Arthur," a cartoon on WGBH. He also enjoyed arts and crafts, finger painting and his electric Jeep. He had many medical issues, which he accepted with great courage and a good sense of humor.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Wayne and Susan (Koch) McGann of Osterville; maternal great-grandparents, John and Teela Koch of Arizona; maternal great-grandmother, Loretta McGann of Arizona; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Littlefield of Hyannis; paternal great-grandmother, Orpha Inman of Maine; and several aunts and uncles.

Burial was private. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 14 at Christ Chapel, 1200 Old Stage Road, Centerville.

Maria Dolores Main, 60

Cotuit - Maria Dolores Main, 60, a homemaker, died at home March 5, 1998 after an illness.

She was the wife of the late Glendon Lee Main.

Mrs. Main was born, raised and educated in Sliema, Malta. After her education, she married her husband, who was a U.S. Navy veteran, and moved to the United States.

Although the Navy kept them moving around, Mrs. Main and her husband settled in Pepperell in 1972, where she was a homemaker. She moved to Cotuit in 1995.

She enjoyed sewing, bird-watching and especially being a grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter, Sharon A. Wilson of Cotuit; a son, Christopher L. Main of Francistown, N.H.; 10 brothers and sisters, all of Malta; two grandsons; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services were private.

Linda Markham, 64

Barnstable - Linda (Conant) Markham, 64, died March 5, 1998 at her home after a seven-month illness with cancer.

She was the wife of Emerson Markham.

Mrs. Markham was born in New York City and was raised in Jackson Heights, Queens. She attended Skidmore College in the 1950s. In 1974, she graduated from Pace University in Westchester, N.Y.

Before moving to Barnstable in 1994, Mrs. Markham lived in Chappaqua and Bronxville in Westchester County, N.Y.

Mrs. Markham met her husband-to-be when she was 2 years old, and married him in 1956. She worked as a secretary for his accounting business in New York City and Barnstable.

While in Barnstable, Mrs. Markham served on the board of the Friends of Sturgis Library and was a member of the Grubs Garden Club. She was also a member of the Ridge Club in Sandwich.

Mrs. Markham was an avid gardener and she enjoyed playing tennis, writing, and painting with watercolors.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Leslie Markham of Seattle; a son, Jeffrey Markham of Willmette, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on March 21 in St. Mary's Church, Barnstable.

Margaret McWilliams, 79

Pepperell - Margaret Adreon McWilliams, 79, formerly of Centerville and trustee of the Centerville Library, died March 2, 1998.

Mrs. McWilliams was from St. Louis, where she graduated from The Mary Institute. She studied medieval and renaissance art in Florence, Italy, before returning to Boston to teach at the Butera School Of Art.

She married the late Hugh L. McWilliams in 1941.

After WWII, they moved to Illinois, where she taught lip reading to deaf children and started a women's investment group and a garden club. From 1957 to 1973, she was a manager at Marshall Field and Co.

Mrs. McWilliams moved to Centerville in 1973 where she was a trustee at the Centerville Library, volunteered at the Cape Cod Hospital, and attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable.

She leaves a daughter, Molly Kimball of Pepperell; two grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

William A. Mennonna, 83

Hyannis - William A. Mennonna, 83, a retired New York City firefighter, died of an illness on March 6, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital.

He was the husband of Helen Newton Mennonna.

Mr. Mennonna was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and was a graduate of Fordham Prep.

He was a fireman first class with the New York City Fire Department for 20 years, retiring in 1959. He later worked for Duke Millworks in Thornwood, N.Y., for 15 years and served as chairman of the board of the Westchester Builders Institute. In 1979 he moved to Hyannis.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, William Mennonna of Lehighton, Pa.; two daughters, Ester Barringer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Phyllis Dunford of Brewster, N.Y.; a brother, Robert McNamara of Cumberland, R.I.; two sisters, Rita Biebel of West Chester, Pa., and Joan Norby of Sunland, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held March 10 in St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster, N.Y. Burial was private.
