Joseph S. Philla, 84

Centerville - Joseph S. Philla, 84, died March 2, 1998 at Cape Heritage Nursing Home, Sandwich, after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Laura D. (Cutter) Philla for 36 years.

Mr. Philla was born and raised in New Bedford. He moved to Orleans in 1928, to Hyannis in 1940, and to Centerville in 1952. He worked for New England Telephone Co. as a foreman and head mechanic in the the company's motor vehicle department. Mr. Philla retired in 1975 after 36 years with the company.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed shellfishing.

Surviving besides his wife are three stepsons, Clifton DeMotte of South Yarmouth, Maurice Pickering of Dennis and Robert Pickering of Hyannis; a stepdaughter, Margaret L. Byrd of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Fetherolf of Monroe, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside senrice was held March 6 in Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville.

Joseph K. Saad, 72

Cotuit - Joseph K. Saad, 72, a retired dry cleaner who was a member of the Artisans Guild of Cape Cod, died unexpectedly March 5, 1998 at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla.

He was the husband of Lucy L. (Hill) Saad. The couple worked together for 20 years at Jo/Lu Crafts, a company that sells handmade dolls and crafts.

Born and educated in Brockton, Mr. Saad owned and operated a string of dry cleaning shops in that area for many years. They included New Way Cleaners, in Brockton and 1-Hour Cleaners in Rockland. He retired from the dry cleaning business in 1972 and spent 10 years as a chemical representative for several companies.

Mr. Saad summered in Cotuit for many years before moving there full time in 1980.

In addition to being a member of the artisans guild, Mr. Saad was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association and the Good Sam Club. He enjoyed traveling and touring by motor home.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Saad is survived by a daughter, Dr. Dale L. Saad of Marstons Mills; a son, Algird Juzukonis of Oxford; a sister, Rose Issa of Avon; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held March 3 at the John­Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Brian K. Sampson, 38

Bourne - Brian K. Sampson, 38, a former longtime Franklin resident, died March 6, 1998 in a drowning in Wakeby Pond in Mashpee following a boating accident.

Mr. Sampson was born in Milford. He was a 1977 graduate of Franklin High School and lived most of his life in Franklin until moving to Bourne last year.

At the time of his death, Mr. Sampson was employed as a shipper for BJ's Warehouse in Franklin. Prior to that, he worked for several years for the Atlantic Drilling and Blasting Co. of Milford.

He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. In the late 1970s, Mr. Sampson served in the Marine Corps. He received an honorable discharge in 1978 as a corporal.

Mr. Sampson is survived by his mother, Beverly A. (Prinitz) Sampson of Franklin; a son, Scott W. Sampson of Bourne; a daughter, Renee L. Sampson of Hyannis; and two sisters, Brenda L. Sampson and Beth A. Sampson, both of Franklin.

A funeral was held March 11 at the Franklin Federated Church, with burial following in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Mashpee Rescue Fund, c/o Mashpee Fire Department, 99 Nathan Ellis Highway, Mashpee, MA 02649.

Margaret E. Schroeder, 90

Hampton, Va. - Margaret E. Schroeder, 90, a former resident of Hyannis Park, died February 6, 1998 after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Erwin Schroeder, who died in 1988.

Mrs. Schroeder was a resident of Russo Road in Hyannis Park for 25 years before moving to Hampton in 1992. Duriing these years, she and her husband were active in the German Club of Cape Cod.

While living on the Cape, she was a member of the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. She enjoyed her association with the quilting and garden clubs of Hyannis.

Surviving are three sisters, Susie Williams, Agnes Parrish and Daisy Williamson, all of Hampton; a stepdaughter, Harriett Weaver of Hyannis Park; a niece, Karen Wennberg of East Dennis; seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandsons. She was the mother of the late Ernest Garrison and Otis Garrison.

Memorial services were held in Hampton.

Hugo W. Sorgi, 80

Yarmouthport - Hugo W. Sorgi, 80, a Yarmouthport resident for 16 years, died March 8, 1998 at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth.

He was the husband of Frances J. (Griffin) Sorgi.

Mr. Sorgi was born in Boston and graduated from Dorchester High School. He worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 33 years as a salesman, retiring in 1980.

During World War II, Mr. Sorgi served in the Army's 82nd Airborne unit in the Pacific Theater.

He was a member of the Milton Cemetery Trustees from 1974 to 1982 and was an elected town meeting member in Milton from 1962 to 1982. Mr. Sorgi was also the former chairman and member of the Milton Town Democratic Committee.

He was a member of St. Agatha Church Holy Name Society, the Milton Knights of Columbus Post 2479 and the Milton American Legion Post 114.

Mr. Sorgi was a loyal fan and supporter of the Notre Dame Football Association.

Surviving besides his wife are five sons, Kevin G. Sorgi of Milton, Edward J. Sorgi of Mission Viego, Calif., Timothy E. Sorgi of Braintree, Christopher J. Bergin of Quincy and Robert A. Sorgi of Braintree; four daughters, Deanne T. Kellogg of Hyannis, Mary Elizabeth Sorgi of Andover, Paula M. Barron of Whitman, and Judith M. Mirbegian of Lowvale, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Hanley of Braintree; a brother, Eugene Sorgi of Braintree; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held March 12 in St. Agatha Church, Milton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Centre St., Newton, MA 02158; or Massachusetts Special Olympics, 450 Maple St., Danvers, MA 01923.

Sherman Bradley Studley, 93

Hyannis - Sherman Bradley Studley, 93, a former business owner, died March 5, 1998 at The Greenery at Lewis Bay.

He was the husband of Laurine (Hibbert) Studley for 46 years.

Born in Manchester, Mr. Studley lived in South Yarmouth since he was 6 before moving to Hyannis. He graduated from Barnstable High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

A World War II veteran, he ran his family-owned business Studley's Garage until his retirement in 1967.

Mr. Studley was a 70-year member of the Masons and a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. He loved to travel with his wife.

A graveside service was held March 7 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Hyannis.

George W. "Pete" Underwood, 69

Marstons Mills - George W. "Pete" Underwood, 69, a longtime resident of Cape Cod, died March 6, 1998 at home.

He was the husband of Judy (Schimmelpfennig) Underwood.

Born and raised in Urbana, Ohio, he was a 1947 graduate of Urbana High School. He worked for the Grimes Aircraft Co. in Ohio as an assembly supervisor.

In 1968, Mr. underwood moved to Marstons Mills where he married and raised his family. He was employed in the maintenance department of Whitehall Manor Nursing Home in Hyannis.

He was a volunteer at the Salvation Army in Hyannis and enjoyed building aircraft models, working on his children's cars and playing the guitar.

Besides his wife, Mr. Underwood is survived by his son, Mark Underwood of Braintree; three daughters, Gilda Scott of Cincinnati, Ohio, Trina Underwood of Liverpool, N.Y. and Elyssa Underwood of Marstons Mills. He is also survived by three brothers, Gene and Willard Underwood, both of Urbana, Ohio, and James Underwood of Springfield, Ohio; one sister, Marva Hill, also of Springfield; eight grandchildren; one greatgrandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Donald Underwood, Harriet Marshall and Janice Gomez.

A service was held March 11 in the Salvation Army Community Center in Hyannis. Burialwas private.

Frederick R. Viles II, 79

Waltham - Frederick R. Viles II, 79, who leaves a sister in Centerville, died March 4m 1998 at the Youville Hospital in Cambridge following surgical complications.

He was the husband of the late Shirley (Hopf) Viles.

A lifelong resident of Waltham, he was the owner of Viles Farm in Waltham, Malloy Trucking Co. of Acton and the Waltham Screw and Machine Shop of Waltham.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Sampson of Belmont and Valerie Johnson of Waltham; a son, Frederick R. Viles III of Savannah, Ga.; three sisters, Etta Potter of Waltham, Annabelle Leaf of Centerville and Betty Franc of Florence, Ore.; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Russell Viles.

A funeral service was held March 9 in the chapel of the Brasco & Sons Memorial in Waltham. Burial followed in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

Memorial donations may be made to Youville Rehabilitation Hospital, 1575 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA 02138; or to the charity of one's choice.

Olavi E. Ahonen, 76

Marstons Mills - Olavi E. Ahonen, 76, died unexpectedly March 10, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Arline (Carlson) Ahonen, who died in 1992.

Born in Sandwich, Mr. Ahonen was educated in Barnstable schools.

He worked for 45 years as a greenskeeper at Oyster Harbors Golf Club, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable.

Mr. Ahonen is survived by a brother, Vaino Ahonen of New Jersey; two sisters, Lillian Ahokas of Hyannis and Ellen Berg of Peabody; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held March 13 in the First Lutheran Church, Route 6A, West Barnstable.
