Bruce M. Rosecrans, 36

Hyannis - Bruce M. Rosecrans, 36, died April 4, 1998 at the Greenery in Hyannis after a long illness.

He was the son of Harold E. Rosecrans of Yarmouth and the late Joan (Rioux) Rosecrans.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., and raised in Latham, he was a 1979 graduate of Shaker High School in Latham. He graduated from the Hudson Valley Community College and had been accepted at the State University of New York at Buffalo when he became ill.

Mr. Rosecrans has been a resident of the Greenery for 16 years.

Besides his father, he is survived by three sisters, Mary Ann Goetz of West Lake, Calif., Jeannine Hampton of Norwich, Conn., Barbara J. Swint of Clifton Park, N.Y.; two brothers, Bryan David Rosecrans of Latham, N.Y., and Harold E. Rosecrans Jr. of Harwich; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated April 8 in St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford, N.Y.

Dr. Vincent Paul Ryan, 78

West Barnstable - Vincent Paul Ryan, 78, a family physician, died March 31, 1998 at The Greenery in Hyannis after a long illness.

He was the husband of Gloria C. (Chasse) Ryan.

Born and educated in Boston, he graduated from Boston College in 1946 and from Tufts Medical School in 1950, He joined the Navy attached to the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va., and in June 1953 started a private family practice in Sharon. In 1976, he became the medical director of the Foxboro Area Health Center.

He was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and on the staff of Norwood Hospital from 1954 to 1985, serving as the secretary of their medical staff in 1962, vice president in 1963 and president in 1964.

Dr. Ryan served on the Sharon Board of Health for many years and was the medical director of the Sharon Manor Nursing Home from 1980 to 1992. He retired in 1985 to West Barnstable and taught philosophy at the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Cape Cod Community College until the time of his death.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mary Jane Ryan of Lafayette, Calif., and Stephanie Ryan of South Salem, N.Y.; a son, John Ryan of Boston; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 4 at the Kelley Chapel, Route 6A, Yarmouthport.

The Rev. Ernest Saunders, 82

Belfast - The Rev. Ernest W. Saunders, 82, retired professor of New Testament interpretation and academic dean of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, died February 27, 1998 of cancer.

He was the husband of Verina Saunders.

The Rev. Saunders graduated summa cum laude in religion and social work from Boston University, then earned his doctorate in biblical studies from Duke University and completed postdoctoral work at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

During his Boston University years, he was pastor of Cotuit Methodist Church. He was ordained in the United Methodist Church and was a Methodist delegate to the Delhi Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 1961.

As a Fulbright research scholar, he studied Greek Orthodox monasteries on Mount Athos in Greece. While at Garrett, he also was a visiting professor in the department of history and literature of religions at Northwestern University. He continued to teach at various institutions after his retirement.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Leslie Little; two sons, Duncan Saunders and Charles Saunders; a foster son, George Banks; a sister, Eleanor Furbush of Helena, Mont.; and a stepmother, Frances Saunders of Brewster.

Services were held in Maine.

John P. Coelho Jr., 63

Plymouth - John Pedro Coelho Jr., 63, a carpenter, died April 5, 1998 at his home in Plymouth.

He was the son of Rachel Coelho Silva and stepson of John Silva, both of Wareham, and the son of the late John P. Coelho.

Born in Taunton, he lived in Front Royal, Va., for more than 18 years.

He was a self-employed carpenter. He also worked at Eldredge Lumber and The Mid-Cape Center.

Mr. Coelho was a charter member of the Buzzards Bay Eagles No. 3741 and a member of the Moose Lodge in Front Royal, Va., and Monument Beach Sportsman's Club.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed woodworking and loved flea markets, auctions and traveling.

Besides his mother and stepfather, he is survived by five daughters, Debra Deltano of Plymouth, Rachel Pearson of Washington , Debra Woodall and Patricia Sutton, both of Virginia, and Jacqueline Rogers of Texas ; three sons, Michael Sutton and Robert Sutton, both of California, and Thomas Sutton of North Carolina; a sister, Nancy Richard of Raynham; four stepbrothers, David Silva and Michael Silva, both of Wareham, and John Silva Jr. and Richard Silva, both of Taunton; two stepsisters, Patricia Medchill of Osterville and Joanne Perrault of Taunton; a friend, Doreen Drake of Plymouth; 16 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 11 at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jordan Hospital Cancer Center, 275 Sandwich St., Plymouth, MA 02360.

Phyllis Gillespie, 76

West Yarmouth - Phyllis M. (Carroll) Gillespie, 76, a former secretary at the Department of Public Welfare, died April 6, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

She was the former wife of Charles H. Gillespie, who died in 1988.

Born in Boston, she graduated from Somerville High School in 1940 and from the Manchester School of Business Machines in Boston. She lived in Randolph for many years until 1963, and was a member of the Braeburn Riding and Sports Club in Randolph.

From 1953 to 1963, Mrs. Gillespie worked as a payroll supervisor for the Jordan Marsh Co. in Boston.

She moved to West Yarmouth in 1963 and worked for King's Department Store in Hyannis from 1969 until 1982, when she joined the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare in Hyannis as a secretary, until her retirement in 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Gillespie and Laura Goddard, both of Hyannis; three grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

A pro-burial service will be held at I0 a.m. April 11 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 1577 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

William Chandler Haskins

Concord - William Chandler Haskins of Concord, and Wianno, Massachusetts, died March 28, 1998 at Emerson Hospital. He was 83.

He had resided in Concord for over 40 years and was actively affiliated with The Finance Committee of the Town of Concord, The Concord Museum, the Concord Country Club, Emerson Hospital and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Mr. Haskins was born in Belmont, graduated from Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, MA in 1933, and received a BA degree, cum laude, from Harvard College in 1937.

At Nobles, he was president of his senior class and the Student Council, captain of the football team, and rowed on the varsity crew. While at Harvard. he was a member of the Owl Club, captain of the freshman crew and member of the varsity crew. In 1936, under the sponsorship of the Riverside Boat Club in Cambridge, his shell competed in the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany, under Hitler's regime.

Following Harvard, he joined World War II efforts and became a Lieutenant Commander in Air Combat Intelligence of the United States Navy.

Upon completion of his Naval duty, a long association began with Simonds Saw & Steel Company located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the leading saw manufacturer in the United States and Canada at the time. He rose from product manager to Eastern Sales Manager, then to Executive Vice President.

For the last twenty years, he was an Associate Director of the Harvard College Fund.

He was a former director of the following: Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Machinery and Allied Products Institute of Washington , DC, The Hacksaw and Bandsaw Association, Machine Knife Association of America as well as the Fitchburg Chamber of Commerce.

He was a director of the Worcester North Savings Bank, The Wentworth Institute, and a trustee of Emerson Hospital and Noble and Greenough School.

His memberships also included the Massachusetts Governor's Commission, The Wianno Club, The Wianno Yacht Club, The Forty-Niners Club, the Investanauts Club, the Boys' Friendly, and the Thursday Evening Club of Boston.

He leaves his wife Elizabeth (Ivins) after 54 years ofmarriage; 2 sons, William Chandler, Jr. "Pete" of Cypress, TX, Thompson Fox of Los Angeles, CA and two daughters, Chandler Woodland of Carlisle and Beverly Dammin of Boston as well as eight grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned tbr Friday, May 8th at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord, MA at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harvard College Fund, Class of 1937, Holyoke Center, Cambridge, MA 02138; or to Noble and Greenough School, Dedham, MA 02026.

Margaret Johnson, 96

Cape Coral, Fla. - Margaret I. (Bowker) Johnson, 96, a former Cotuit resident, died April 6, 1998 at her home in Cape Coral after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Harry T. Johnson and William G. Ball.

Born in Malden, Mass., she lived in Cotuit for 20 years before moving to Florida 31 years ago. She was a former volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital many years ago.

She is survived by her beloved friend, Gwendolen Power of Cape Coral, with whom she lived; a stepson, William G. Ball Jr. of Dennis; two stepgrandchildren; a niece; and several great-nieces and greatnephews.

A memorial service in Cotuit will be announced at a later date.

Thomas F. Larkin, 86

Osterville - Thomas F. Larkin, 86, a resident of Osterville, died April 6, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Born in Brookline, he graduated from Brookline High School and Bentley College. He received a law degree from Northeastern University.

Mr. Larkin was a World War II veteran, serving as a lieutenant in the Navy. He started as an assistant town clerk for the town of Brookline, then served as town clerk for many years.

Surviving are a sister, Marguerite O'Brien of Beverly; and two nieces and a nephew.

A funeral Mass was celebrated April 13 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Mary Law, 73

Centerville - Mary (Phillips) Law, 73, a dietitian and school cook, died at home April 11, 1998 after a brief illness.

Born in Brookline, she moved to West Barnstable as a child. Mrs. Law graduated from Barnstable High School and, in 1944 from Lesley College in Boston.

Mrs. Law was assistant manager for the employee care of First National Bank in Boston, then worked as a dietitian at Cape Cod Hospital. She was cook-manager at Barnstable High School and then at the Centerville Elementary School before retiring in 1988.

She is survived by a son, Mark B. Law of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Ruth Cuniff of Brighton and a niece and nephew.

A graveside service was held April 15 in Beechwood Cemetery in Centerville.

Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
