L. Gail Costello, 52

Osterville - L. Gail Costello, 52, a retired teacher, died April 4, 1998 at Regency Health Center, Centerville.

She was the daughter of Lucy H. (Iacovelli) Costello of Osterville and the late John P. Costello.

Born, raised and educated in Milford, Miss Costello was a 1963 graduate of St. Mary's Central Catholic High School and a 1967 graduate of Regis College.

She was employed as an English teacher at Franklin High School until illness forced her retirement in 1974. She then did volunteer work at the Cotuit Public Library for more than 15 years.

Besides her mother, Miss Costello is survived by one sister, Bettina J. Caulkins of Oxnard, Calif.

A funeral was held April 7 at the James E. Kellett & Son Funeral Home in Milford, followed by a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Milford. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Raymond D. Crawford, 86

Salem - Raymond D. Crawford, 86, formerly of Barnstable, died April 6, 1998 at Salem Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Gwendolyn (James) Crawford.

Mr. Crawford was born in New Brunswick, Canada, and raised on Cape Cod, where he graduated from Barnstable High School. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1936. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

A nationally ranked tennis player, Mr. Crawford also played semiprofessional baseball, He was an accomplished golfer and owned the Santuit Golf Course for 20 years. He was a member of the Oyster Harbors Golf Club in Osterville.

Mr. Crawford taught for 20 years at Barnstable High School. He retired as principal of the Rowley (Mass.) Elementary School.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan Crawford-Grier of Ottawa, Canada, and Lesley Crawford-Cronan of Marblehead and five grandchildren.

A service was held April 8 in the Old North Church in Marblehead with burial in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorials may be made to the Francis Ouimet Caddies Scholarship Fund, 190 Park St., Weston, MA 02193.

Calogero 'Charles' Graceffa, 89

West Barnstable - Calogero "Charles" Graceffa, 89, a shoemaker formerly of Needham, died unexpectedly at home on April 4, 1998.

He was the husband of Giuseppa (Piccione) Graceffa for 67 years.

Born, raised and educated in Sicily, Mr. Graceffa came to the United States in 1956. A shoemaker, he lived in Needham where he owned and operated the Grippo Shoe Co.

In 1979, Mr. Graceffa and his wife became U.S. citizens.

After his retirement, Mr. Gracella moved to San Diego in 1986. He lived there until moving to West Barnstable in 1997.

He enjoyed playing cards and bocci and was an avid gardener.

Besides his wife, Mr. Graceffa is survived by a son, Angelo Graceffa of Centerville; four daughters, Madeline Azzoppardi of Texas , Maria McDonnell of Quincy, Erminia Gigliotti of San Diego, Calif., CleIia Egan of Needham; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held April 6 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 Main St., Centerville. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery.

Richard Oscar Hammond, 60

Centerville - Richard Oscar Hammond, 60, died March 24, 1998 at the Jewish Memorial Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Boston, after recent surgery at Cape Cod Hospital, which was preceded by a long illness.

He was the husband of Pamela (Jordan) Hammond.

Mr. Hammond was born in Lynn and raised in West Newbury. He sewed in the Navy from 1955 to 1964 aboard the USS Kenneth D. Bailey and the USS Wasp in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a Black Seal and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal, European and Asian clasp.

After receiving an honorary discharge, Mr. Hammond was employed as a chef at the Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He moved to the Cape in 1965, where he worked in several capacities at The Yachtsman Motor Inn in Hyannis.

He lived locally for the better part of 33 years, working as a carpenter and finish carpenter for several builders, including Davenport and Sylvia & Sylvia. He also built homes in Billerica, Georgetown and Waltham.

During the early 1970s, he was construction superintendent on many projects in the Fort Lauderdale-Miami area.

Mr. Hammond was featured by a builders association in the Fort Lauderdale News for his accomplishments at Inverrary. He received his Massachusetts builders license in the mid-1980s.

Upon returning to the Cape, he lived in Hyannis and most recently in Centerville. He was chief of investigations for the Cataldo Detective Agency and served as an honorary deputy sheriff of Barnstable County.

He was an avid sailor.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Claudia Staten of Kingston and Melissa Williamson of Hyannis; three sons, Sean Hammond of Hyannis, Scot Hammond of West Hyannisport and Steven Hammond of Centerville; two granddaughters; and a grandson.

A memorial service will be celebrated April 5 at the Federated Church of Hyannis in Hyannis. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Mildred Hancock, 74

Vero Beach, Fla. - Mildred Hancock, 74, a former elementary reading specialist, died March 31, 1998 at the Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Edwin G. Hancock, who died in 1995.

Mrs. Hancock was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Framingham State College in 1960 and from Boston University in 1965 with a master's degree in education. She was an elementary reading specialist and taught in the town of Holliston for 22 years.

Mrs. Hancock married in 1943 and lived for many years in Newton and Wayland. In 1976, she bought a home in Barnstable, where she spent weekends and vacations until her retirement in 1982. At that time, she bought a home in Vero Beach, where she spent her winters and summered in Barnstable.

She was a member of the First Church of God in Vero Beach.

Mrs. Hancock is survived by a daughter and a son.

A memorial service was held April 3 in Vero Beach. A private burial was held in the Massachusetts

Thelma J. Kaukola, 93

Centerville - Thelma J. (Erickson) Kaukola, 93, a homemaker, died at home March 30, 1998 after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Matti R. Kaukola.

Mrs. Kaukola was born in Wisconsin and moved to Quincy at age 10, living there for 57 years. She then lived in Centerville for 18 years and in Weymouth for five years before returning to Centerville three years ago.

A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and making crafts at home.

Surviving are a son, Robert E. Kaukola of New Hampshire; three daughters, Doris J. Sacchetti of Pembroke, June A. Inman of Centerville and Donna L. Larson of Weymouth; a sister, Bertha Hasty of Braintree; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral service was held April 3 at the McDonald Funeral Home in South Weymouth. Burial was in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

Aune 'Annie' I. Pacheco, 85

Centerville - Aune "Annie" I. (Halunen) Pacheco, 85, died March 31, 1998 at the Cape Regency Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Arthur P. Pacheco.

Born and raised in South Carver, Mrs. Pacheco was educated in Carver and Wareham schools. She lived in Quincy before moving to Hyannisport in 1946.

Mrs. Pacheco was employed by the Mason and Sullivan Clock Works in Osterville from 1968 to 1980.

She participated in the Fresh Air Fund and sponsored a child for many summers.

Mrs. Pacheco enjoyed bowling in several Hyannis leagues, including the senior citizens. She loved the Cape Cod beaches and wildlife.

She was a member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church and a former member of the Methodist Church of Carver and the Finnish Congregational Church of Wareham.

Mrs. Pacheco is survived by her brother, Theodore Halunen of South Carver; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held April 8 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, with burial following in Oak Neck Cemetery, Hyannis.

Memorial donations may be made to the West Yarmouth Congregational Church Beautification Fund, Box 606, West Yarmouth, MA 02673.

M. Janet Parent, 74

Wellesley - M. Janet (Farley) Parent, 74, who leaves a brother and a sister on the Cape, died April 1, 1998 at her home in Wellesley.

She was the wife of Charles A. Parent, who died in 1989.

Born and educated in Natick, Mrs. Parent was a 1940 graduate of the Natick High School.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Parent of Townsend and Robert Parent of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Richard Farley of Barnstable; a sister, Rita Clark of Buzzards Bay; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated April 6 at St. Patrick's Church in Natick, followed by burial in the Parent family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
