Francis Hammar, 85

Sunday, August 6, 2000

HOLDEN -- Francis G. Hammar, 85, of 144 Paugus Road, a retired foreman, died Friday, Aug. 4, in the Hospice Residence, Worcester, after an illness.

His wife of 39 years, Elmi A. (Maki) Hammar, died in 1979. He leaves a son, John C. Hammar of Lynnwood, Wash.; a daughter, Nancy E.H. Austin of Holden; a sister, Doris C. Liimatainen of Melbourne, Fla.; a granddaughter; and nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of John A. and Alina (Peterson) Hammar, and moved to Holden 25 years ago. He graduated from North High School, Worcester.

Mr. Hammar was a foreman in the diamond products division of Norton Co., Worcester, where he worked 47 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church and attended the former Bethany Lutheran Church, both in Worcester, years ago. He sang with the Sibelius Singers, and enjoyed gardening and bird watching.

The funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Aug. 7, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. A calling hour is 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 7, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701; or to Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Paul M. Hanson, 45

Tuesday, August 8, 2000

WORCESTER -- The memorial service for Paul M. “Spyder” Hanson, 45, of North Hollywood, Calif., formerly of Worcester, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or a charity.

Mr. Hanson died Wednesday, Aug. 2, in Melbourne, Australia.

Mary T. Harrahy, 96

Monday, August 14, 2000

FITCHBURG -- Mary T. (Kelleher) Harrahy, 96, of 19 Drake Road, a former assembler, died Saturday, Aug. 12, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital.

Her husband, Frederick M. Harrahy, died in 1965. She leaves a daughter, Verna F. Harrahy of Fitchburg; nieces and nephews. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Daniel and Julia (Lynch) Kelleher.

Mrs. Harrahy was an assembler at Tilton-Cook Co. for many years.

She was a member of St. Bernard's Parish and a former member of the Holy Family Guild.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 16, from Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Boston Catholic Television, PO Box 9109, Newtonville, MA 02158; or to Gardner V.N.A. Adult Day Care Center, Park Hill Plaza, Fitchburg, MA 01420; or may be left at the funeral home.

Janice Harwood, 82

SHREWSBURY -- Janice (Butler) Harwood, 82, of 35 Julio Drive, formerly of Worcester, a former teacher and doctor's assistant, died Thursday, Aug. 10, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester.

Her husband of 45 years, Sydney Harwood, died in 1988. She leaves a daughter, Nancy H. Shaner of Worcester; two sons, Timothy H. Harwood of Fairfield, Conn., and John H. Harwood II of Chevy Chase, Md.; a brother, Douglas P. Butler of Shrewsbury; and seven grandchildren. She was born in Newton, daughter of Walter G. and Mabel (Parker) Butler, and moved to Worcester at an early age. She also lived in Holden before moving to Shrewsbury four years ago. She had summered many years in Westport Harbor. She attended Bancroft School and graduated from North High School in 1934. After graduating from Bradford Junior College in 1936, she studied at the Eliot Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University.

Mrs. Harwood was a teacher at Walt Whitman School, New York City, and later assisted Dr. Francis L. Ilg at the Clinic for Child Development at Yale Medical School in New Haven, Conn. She then became a teacher at Bancroft School, Worcester.

She was a member of First Unitarian Church, Worcester, the Worcester Garden Club, the Worcester Historical Museum, and the Worcester Art Museum. She had served on the Board of Directors of Girls Inc.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester, MA 01608. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Lucy E. Hazen, 85; longtime machine operator

WORCESTER -- Lucy E. (Tomolonis) Hazen, 85, of 12 Tatman St., a retired machinist, died Monday, Aug. 7, in The Meadows in Leicester.

Her husband, Henry M. Hazen, died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Edwin Hazen of Boylston and Ronald H. Hazen of Worcester; a daughter, Dorothy E. Whittemore of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; a sister, Rose Kelleher of Worcester; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A son, William Hazen, died in 1982. She was born in Worcester, daughter of William and Helen (Kimball) Tomolonis, and lived on Millbury Street and for the past 29 years on Tatman Street.

Mrs. Hazen worked at the Worcester Market and at Raytheon Corp. She also was a machine operator for 29 years at Culver Sterns, retiring in 1976.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in Lindquist-Lundin Funeral Home, 36 Butler St. After cremation, burial will be private. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m Thursday, Aug. 10, in the funeral home.

Miguel A. Hernandez, 40

LEOMINSTER -- Miguel A. Hernandez, 40, of 15 State St., died Friday, Aug. 11, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Juana DeJesus; two sons, Miguel A. and Jose M. Hernandez, both of Guayama, Puerto Rico; three daughters, Kenia, Karen and Karina Hernandez, all of Leominster; his parents, Juan Hernandez and Adminilda Addarich of Guayama; four brothers, Jose Hernandez of Fitchburg, Juan, Luis and Carlos Hernandez, all of Guayama; three sisters, Marilyn Hernandez of Philadelphia, Eva Hernandez of New Jersey and Nilda Hernandez of Guayama; a granddaughter; nephews and nieces. He was born in Guayama and lived about five years in Leominster.

Mr. Hernandez was a construction laborer in Puerto Rico.

The funeral service and burial will be in Guayama. There are no calling hours. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Home, 838 Main St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Eric W. Hillsen, 97

ARLINGTON -- Eric W. Hillsen, 97, of Arlington, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., and Worcester, a former machinist, died Monday, Aug. 7, at his daughter's residence in Arlington.

His wife of 66 years, Astrid V. (Aronson) Hillsen, died in 1993. He leaves a son, Hartley E. Hillsen of Worcester; a daughter, Ann L. Smith of Arlington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Eric R. and Beda M. (Kihlgren) Hillsen, and lived most of his life in Worcester before moving to Florida in 1981.

Mr. Hillsen worked at John J. Adams Co., Worcester, retiring in 1971. He previously was a machinist at Leland and Gifford Co., Worcester.

He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and past president and the last surviving charter member of the Mendelssohn Singers Chorale Group, both in Worcester.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in Christ Chapel of Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster St., Worcester. Burial will be at the family's convenience in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care, Inc., 41 Montvale Ave., Stoneham, MA 02180. Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Ruth M. Hilyard, 78

WORCESTER -- Ruth M. (Connolly) Hilyard, 78, of 39 Hastings Ave., a nursing home volunteer, died Sunday, Aug. 6, at home after a brief illness.

She leaves her husband of 55 years, John B. Hilyard; three sons, Joseph F. Hilyard of Park Ridge, Ill., John R. Hilyard of Tucson, Ariz., and Jeffrey C. Hilyard of Worcester; two daughters, Judith M. Nordberg of Worcester and Joyce A. VanderLeeden of Longmeadow; a brother, Ralph Connolly of Auburn; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John P. and Louise M. (Henderson) Connolly, graduated from North High School, and attended Worcester State College and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Hilyard was active in the West Boylston Street School Mother's Club for many years. She taught religious education at Immaculate Conception Church for many years. Many years ago, she played the glockenspiel in the former West Boylston Street Marching Band, and later participated in several reunions of the band.

She was a longtime volunteer in area nursing homes where she helped with activities for residents and played the piano to entertain them.

The funeral will be Thursday, Aug. 10, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, in the funeral home.

William Hryzan Sr., 69

THOMPSON -- William Hryzan Sr., 69, of 250 Brickyard Road, Fabyan, a retired truck driver and Korean War veteran, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, in William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich, after an illness.

He leaves a son, William Hryzan Jr. of North Grosvernordale; a daughter, Karen Bielecki of South Killingly; four brothers, Edwin Hryzan of Woodstock, Fred Hryzan of North Grosvernordale, Sylvester Hryzan of Webster, and Walter Hryzan of Bethlehem; three sisters, Adele Hryzan of North Grosvernordale, Mary Letourneau of Tacoma, Wash., and Theresa Zelazo of Dover, N.H.; two granddaughters. He was born in Fabyan, son of Sylvester and Mitchelina (Kachnowski) Hryzan. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Hryzan was a Teamsters Union truck driver for many years. He drove for the Grove Corp. in Quinebaug for many years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Oscar W. Swanson Post 67 American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10088, both of Thompson, and the Marine Corps League.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., North Grosvernordale. Burial, with military honors, will be in South Killingly Cemetery. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in the funeral home.

Grace Huntress, 97

CHARLTON -- Grace (Williams) Huntress, 97, of the Masonic Home, died Friday, April 14, in the home.

She leaves her husband, Dr. William Huntress. She was born in Grandville, N.Y., daughter of Robert and Anna (Williams) Williams, and lived in Charlton for many years. She received her bachelor's degree from Boston University, and received a master's degree in social work from Case Western Reserve in Ohio.

The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, in Nichols Chapel, the Masonic Home, 88 Masonic Home Road. Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge, is directing arrangements.

Roger J. Jacques, 73

TOWNSEND -- Roger J. Jacques, 73, of 28 Breezey Lane, Quinebaug, a plumber, died Saturday, August 5, in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge.

His wife, Cecile E. (Lamothe) Jacques, died in 1999. He leaves two sons, Richard R. Jacques and Robert L. Jacques of Southbridge; a daughter, Diane C. Sawicki of Southbridge; a brother, Normand Jacques of Southbridge; 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nephews and nieces. He was born in Spencer, son of Edmond and Diana (Piche) Jacques.

Mr. Jacques was a plumber, employed at Tasse Heating and Plumbing for 40 years before retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Southbridge, and the League of the Sacred Heart of the Parish. He also attended St. Stephen's Church, Quinebaug.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 30 Charlton St., Southbridge. Burial will be in New Notre Dame Cemetery, Southbridge. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115-9983.

WEBSTER -- Calling hours for Sharyn E. (Grady) Wrenn-Vancott, 50, of 12 Whitcomb St., were held June 18 at Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., Worcester. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Mrs. Wrenn-Vancott died June 16 in St. Vincent Hospital after a short illness. Among her survivors is a stepson, Paul S. Vancott Jr. of Webster.

Burial will be at Prospect Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Buma Funeral Home, 101 North Main St. (Route 122). Mr. Emond died Monday at Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital, Milford. Among his survivors is his maternal grandmother, Dorothy (Langurand) Galloway of Uxbridge.
