Alice Streeter, 79

HUBBARDSTON -- Alice (Tolman) Streeter, 79, of 14 Streeter Road, a retired bookkeeper, died Saturday, Aug. 5, in the Leo P. LaChance Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, Gardner, after an illness.

Her husband, Harold A. Streeter, died in 1983. She leaves three sons, Richard Streeter of Conway, S.C., David Streeter of Las Vegas and Harold A. Streeter Jr. of St. Francis, Maine; a daughter, Barbara Hill of Gardner; a sister, Mary Neiri of Barre; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was born in Barre, daughter of Edward and Mary (Panczyk) Tolman, and lived many years in Hubbardston. She was educated in Barre schools.

Mrs. Streeter was a bookkeeper at Chair City Beef Co., Gardner, before retiring. She most recently was a nurse's aide at the Leo P. LaChance Center. Many years ago, she was a cashier at IGA, Gardner.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Church, Gardner; a member and past president of the Hubbardston Golden Age Club and the Lovewell Pond Sporting Club; and a member of the Hubbardston Council on Aging and the Hubbardston Cash Committee.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, from Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell St., Gardner. Burial will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Gardner. A calling hour is 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Walter F. Studley, 88; truck driver, bartender

STERLING -- Walter F. Studley, 88, of 109 Swett Hill Road, a retired tractor-trailer driver, died Saturday, Aug. 12, at home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Leone (Delorey) Studley; a son, Richard J. Studley of Sterling; two daughters, Judith N. Rielly of Sterling and Barbara C. Bernard of Auburn; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Walter F. and Clara (Eisentraut) Studley, and lived 56 years in Sterling.

Mr. Studley was a tractor-trailer driver for 50 years and worked at Shannon's and Hallamore trucking companies, both in Worcester. After retiring, he was a school bus driver for Lowe Transportation Co., Clinton. He formerly owned and operated an apple orchard, and was also a bartender at Twin Oaks Restaurant, Franklin Manor in West Boylston and Grandview Golf Course in Leominster.

He was a member of First Church and a former member of the Sterling Grange. He enjoyed gardening and golfing.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, in First Church, Meeting House Hill Road. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sterling EMS, PO Box 597; or to First Church, Meeting House Hill Road, both Sterling, MA 01564. Miles Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, is directing arrangements.

HOLDEN -- The Rev. Roland D. Sundberg, 82, of Holden, former minister of visitation at Wesley United Methodist Church in Worcester, died Sunday, Aug. 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of a year, Chloe A. (Nester) Sundberg; a son, Paul E. Sundberg of Stockbridge; and two grandsons. His first wife, Eileen A. (Hedstrom) Sundberg, died in 1998. He was born in Brockton, son of Oscar K. and Lydia N. (Carlander) Sundberg, and had lived in Ohio before moving to Holden. He graduated from Malden High School, and earned a bachelor's degree form Tufts University in 1940 and a master's degree of sacred theology from Boston University School of Theology in 1945.

He began his life in ministry as a seminary student preaching at Swedish Methodist Church, Roxbury. His first appointment was to a two-point charge in Connecticut at Moosup and Oneco churches. In Ohio, he preached at Windermere Methodist Church in East Cleveland, Christ United Methodist Church in Canton, and churches in Norwalk, Willowick, Medina and Barberton. He retired in 1976, and then served 14 years as minister of visitation at Wesley United Methodist Church, Worcester.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was also a Mason in the Blue Lodge of Moosup; a 32nd degree Scottish Rite in Canton, Ohio; and a patron of the Canton (Ohio) Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He played the trumpet for 71 years, was a member of the Trinity Symphonette and the Wesley Winds, and sang in the Wesley Choir, all of Wesley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed and gave lectures on music boxes.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in Wesley United Methodist Church, 114 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in Green Bower Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., and noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 114 Main St., Worcester, MA 01608.

Charles A. Towsley Sr.

WINCHENDON -- Charles A. Towsley Sr., 75, of 439 Maple St., a retired woodworker, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, in Keystone Center, Leominster, after an illness.

He leaves a son, Charles A. Towsley Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a stepson, Michael E. Caldwell of Worcester; two daughters, Charlene J. Coutu of New Salem and Laurie A. Gauthier of Winchendon; a sister, Jesse Fish of Fort Myers, Fla.; a half-sister, Viola Thrasher, also of Fort Myers; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. He was born in Troy, N.H., son of Guy G. and Susie C. (Norwood) Towsley, and lived in Winchendon for 37 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.

Mr. Towsley was a woodworker at the former Temple Stuart Co. in Baldwinville, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of Lt. Frederick Wilder White Post 2158 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The private funeral will be in Snow-Ladeau Funeral Home, 343 Central St., at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to Winchendon EMT Ambulance Fund, PO Box 125, Winchendon, MA 01475.

Mary M. Trump, mother of Donald
NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Mary MacLeod Trump, the mother of real estate developer and casino operator Donald Trump, died Monday. She was 88.

Mrs. Trump, a philanthropist who supported charities near her home in Queens and elsewhere, was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland in 1912. She met Fred Trump, a budding real estate developer, on a trip to New York City in the early 1930s. They married in 1936 and settled in the Jamaica Estates section of Queens.

Fred Trump, who amassed an unglamorous fortune constructing outer-borough apartments, died last year at age 93.

In addition to Donald, Mrs. Trump is survived by three other children, Robert, president of his father's property management company; Maryanne, a Third Circuit Court of Appeals judge; and Elizabeth, a Chase Manhattan Bank executive.

A fifth child, Fred Trump Jr., died in 1981 at age 42.

William J. Ugone, 84

WORCESTER -- William J. Ugone, 84, of 631 Salisbury St., formerly of 500 Lake Ave., a World War II veteran and a retired purchasing manager and purchasing agent, died Monday, Aug. 7, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Joan L. (Gentile) Ugone; a son, James W. Ugone of Topsfield; two daughters, Janna V. Ugone-Whalen of Northampton and Leanora P. Horowitz of South Dartmouth; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was born in Hazardville, Conn., son of James and Vera (Buonomo) Ugone, and graduated from Commerce High School and attended Becker Business College, now Becker Junior College. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Mr. Ugone worked 38 years for Morgan Construction Co., retiring in 1983. He was a certified purchasing manager and purchasing agent. He then was a consultant for the company for six years, as well as working as a volunteer at Fallon Clinic.

He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church, the Worcester Exchange Club, Morgan Construction Retired Men's Club, Greendale Retired Men's Club, and American Legion Post 201. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 4.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, 75 Alvarado Ave. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, in the funeral home. Members of Eastside Post 201 will meet at 7 p.m. during the calling hours to conduct a ritual. Flowers may be sent or donations may be made to Challenge Unlimited (a horse farm for handicapped children), 450 Lowell St., Andover, MA 01810.

Alice G. Vallee, 88

WORCESTER -- Alice G. (Gagnon) Vallee, 88, of 57 Adams St., Westboro, formerly of 1050 Main St., died Saturday, Aug. 5, in Worcester Medical Center.

Her husband, Louis A. Vallee, died in 1981. She leaves two sons, Louis A. Vallee Jr. of Columbus, Ga., and Denis A. Vallee of Spencer; two daughters, Pauline L. Dobkowski, with whom she lived, and Georgette A. Kennedy of Worcester; two sisters, Clara Forgette of Oxford and Pauline Rioux of Marshfield; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. She was born in Fall River, daughter of Joseph and Armandine (Turcotte) Gagnon, and moved to Worcester in 1936. She lived in Westboro for the past two years.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church and its Golden Age Club. She was a former president of the Franco-American Club, and was a member of the Association Canado Americaine, where she received the Legion of Honor Medal. She volunteered for the Age Center Creative Hands Gift Shop.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 9, from Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 57 Illinois St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Name of Jesus Parish Fund, 57 Illinois St., Worcester, MA 01603.

Henry VanderBrug, 97

NORTHBRIDGE -- Henry VanderBrug, 97, of Chestnut Street, Whitinsville, a retired shipping department worker, died Sunday, Aug. 13, in St. Camillus Health Center.

His wife, Edith (Harkema) VanderBrug, died in 1997. He leaves two sons, Richard H. and William E. VanderBrug, both of Whitinsville; a daughter, Kathryn G. VanderBaan of Whitinsville;three sisters, Henderika Koopman, Edith Plantinga, and Pauline Bosma, all of Whitinsville; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Edward VanderBrug of Michigan, died in 1961, and another brother, Carl VanderBrug of California, died in 1997. He was born in Hommers, the Netherlands, son of Dirk and Hinke (Haringa) VanderBrug, and lived in Whitinsville most of his life.

Mr. VanderBrug worked at Castle Hill Farm and the Whitin Machine Works shipping department for 42 years, retiring in 1970.

He was a charter member of the Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church, where he was a deacon, and was a former member of the Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church. He was a member of the Men's Bible Study at the Whitin Gym. He enjoyed gardening.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in the chapel of the Buma Funeral Home, 480 Church St., Whitinsville. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Whitinsville Christian School, 279 Linwood Ave., Whitinsville, MA 01588 or the Whitinsville Retirement Society, 10 Chestnut St., Whitinsville, MA 01588.

Raymond L. Walker, 81

FITCHBURG -- Raymond L. Walker, 81, of 54 Wallace Ave., a self-employed contractor, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of five years, Mary (Stavropoulous) Walker; a daughter, Mary Parish of Leominster; a brother, John F. Walker of Leominster; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Fitchburg, son of David D. Sr. and Juliette (Lorion) Walker, and lived in Fitchburg and Lunenburg. He attended Fitchburg schools.

Mr. Walker was a self-employed contractor for more than 40 years. He attended St. Bernard's Church and was a member of the retired men's club in Fitchburg. He enjoyed mo-peds and motorcycles, having owned several during the past 20 years.

At his request, no funeral service is planned. Burial will be private in St. Bernard's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., is directing arrangements.

James J. Wall, 81

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- James J. Wall, 81, of Roseville, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, July 29, in West St. Paul after a long illness.

His wife of 41 years, Winifred (Cardinal) Wall, died before him. He leaves a daughter, Kathleen Nilles of St. Paul; two sisters, Anne Plante and Joan Bean; nephews and nieces. His first wife, Ruth (Nelson) Wall, died in 1996. Two brothers, William and John Wall, and a sister, Mary McQuillan, died before him. He was born and raised in Worcester and lived in Arlington, Mass., and Wakefield, Mass., before moving to Minnesota.

Mr. Wall was a supervisor in the Massachusetts Division of Accounts for more than 30 years. He worked closely with the Legislature's Committee on Counties, and acted as the division's liaison on county fiscal matters.

The funeral was held in Maplewood. Mueller-Bias Funeral Home, 2130 North Dale St., is directing arrangements.

Rodney Wallace, 72

ORANGE -- Rodney Wallace, 72, of 519 East River St., a World War II veteran and a former police lieutenant, died Thursday, Aug. 3, at home.

He leaves four sons, Robert S. Wallace of Clearwater, Fla., Mark A. Wallace of Greenfield, Rodney Wallace Jr. of Boonesville, N.Y., and Anthony L. Wallace of Gill; a sister, Sally A. Rand of Pownal, Maine; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Boston, son of Robert S. and Sarah E. (Yeager) Wallace, and was raised in Lunenburg. He lived many years in the Athol-Orange area. He graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1945; attended Babson Institute, Boston; graduated from State Police Academy; and attended Harvard University. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.

Mr. Wallace served with the Lunenburg Fire and Police Departments, attaining the rank of sergeant before joining the Massachusetts State Police in 1953. With the State Police, he was stationed in Topsfield, Charlton, Athol, Holden, Shelburne Falls, Monson, Northampton, and Brookfield before being assigned to the Worcester County district attorney's office. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant in 1975.

He was an active member of the Athol Orange Lodge of Elks, and received the Elk of the Year award. He was a member of American Legion Post 172, and a former member of the Lunenburg Sportsman's Club, the Charles W. Moore Lodge of Masons in Fitchburg, and the Massachusetts State Troopers Association.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in North Cemetery, Lunenburg. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Joslin Diabetes Foundation, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215. Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., is directing arrangements.
