Rose A. Sweeney, 85

Bridgewater - Rose A. (Tinsley) Sweeney, 85, formerly of Centerville, died April 17, 1998 at the Island Terrace Nursing Home, Lakeville, after an illness.

She was the wife of the late John F. Sweeney.

Mrs. Sweeney was born in Bridgewater and lived there 52 years. She was a 1929 graduate of Bridgewater High School and a 1933 graduate of Bridgewater State College. She taught school in Middleboro for 20 years.

Mrs. Sweeney moved to Centerville in the 1970s and lived there for 23 years before moving back to Bridgewater in 1993. She enjoyed gardening and reading and was an active supporter of the Centerville Library.

Mrs. Sweeney is survived by a daughter, Rosemary Perkins of Middleboro; three sisters, Ellen Schroll of Connecticut, Elizabeth Souza of Bridgewater and Mary Gifford of Maine; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Steven F. Sweeney.

A funeral service was held April 21 at the Prophett Funeral Home, Bridgewater, and was followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.

Memorial donations may be made to the John F. and Steven F. Sweeney Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 380, Bridgewater, MA 02324; or to the Centerville Library, 585 Main St., Centerville, MA 02632.

James R. Thompson, 78

Osterville - James R. Thompson, 78, a resident of Osterville, died April 12, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Harriet (Hooper) Thompson.

Born in Franklin, Pa., Mr. Thompson was raised in Houston, Texas . He was a graduate of San Jacinto High School and attended the University of Texas before enlisting in the Army Air Corps.

While in the Army, he served as a flight instructor prior to becoming a heavy bombardment pilot for the 8th Air Force.

After his discharge in 1945, Mr. Thompson worked as a pilot for TWA before becoming a group sales manager for the John Hancock Insurance Company in Houston, Texas . He retired in the late 1960s.

After summering for many years in Osterville, Mr. Thompson moved to Osterville during the mid-1980s.

Surviving are a son, James C. Thompson of Alliquippa, Pa.; a daughter, Barbara Nelson of Woodlands, Texas ; a sister, Elizabeth Sloan of Kingwood, Texas ; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut Street, Brockton, MA 02401; or the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.

Alfred A. Vonderahe, 87

Hyannis - Alfred Antone Vonderahe, 87, a former resident of Dennisport, died April 15, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Manor in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Harriet L. (Van Wely) Vonderahe for 59 years.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he graduated from Bentley College of Accounting and Finance in Boston. He lived in Drexel Hill, Pa., before moving to Dennisport.

He was an accountant for General Electric for many years and later a credit manager for GE Credit Corp. until his retirement.

Mr. Vonderahe was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port and the Dennis Pines Golf Club.

He was an avid golfer, gardener, ballroom dancer and bridge player.

Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Jeanne V. Bousum of Downingtown, Pa., and Christine L. Kuipers of Wilmington, Del.; a son, Glenn A. Vonderahe of New Market, N.H.; two brothers, Edward F. Vonderahe of Gloversville, N.Y., and George R. Vonderahe of Sun City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 3 at Pilgrim Congregational Church, Main Street, Harwich Port.

Rosemarie "Dodie" Fortman, 58

Centerville - Rosemarie (Schneible) "Dodie" Fortman, 58, a registered nurse, died at her home April 22, 1998 after a long battle with cancer.

She was the wife of David A. Fortman.

Mrs. Fortman was born in San Diego. In 1961 she graduated from Barry College with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. In 1964, she was commissioned a lieutenant in the Air Force and was assigned to the maternity unit of the Otis Air Force Base hospital.

She was married in 1965 and moved to Centerville in 1968.

Mrs. Fortman joined the maternity unit at Cape Cod Hospital in 1971, where she remained until 1997.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Fortman is survived by three daughters, Jennifer Sato of Charlestown, Madeline McCarron of Falls Church, Va., and Christine Scott of Alexandria, Va.; one son, Timothy Fortman of Centerville; a twin sister, Roberta Shivik of Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Daniel Schneible of Front Royal, Va., and Robert Schneible of Merritt Island, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held April 25 in Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was on April 27 in St. Henry's Cemetery in Chicago.

Ellen W. Lloyd, 90

Hyannis - Ellen W. (Prada) Lloyd, 90, died April 11 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community­Pavilion after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Cyrus Lloyd and dear friend of the late Warren Smith.

Mrs. Lloyd was born and educated in Provincetown and raised there by her Uncle Fred and Aunt Eva Emery. She lived in Marion and Watertown before moving to Hyannis.

For many years she was in charge of the dining room at Wellesley College. She vividly remembered when Hillary Rodham Clinton was a student there.

She is survived by her nephew and caregiver Clifford "Kippy" Taylor of West Yarmouth; her other nephews, Frank B. Fratus Jr., Herbert W. Newcomb Jr. and Robert Newcomb, all of California; a niece, Rebecca Burhoe of California and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A graveside service was held April 27 in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Yarmouth.

Freole David Orcutt, 60

Durham, Maine - Freole David Orcutt, 60, formerly of Cape Cod, died April 22, 1998 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was the husband of Betty L. Orcutt.

Born in Barnstable and educated in Sandwich, he attended Barnstable Trade School under the carpentry apprentice program, the Construction Cost Institute in Denver and the Boston Trade School.

He taught carpentry at Southeastern Maine Vocational Technical School for a brief time in the late 1970s and taught millwright evening courses through the millwright apprenticeship program of Local 517 in Portland.

He worked as a carpenter and millwright in all phases of the construction business and was a skilled heavy duty machinist.

Mr. Orcutt was a member of the Millwright and Machinery Local Union 1121 and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Daniel F. Orcutt of Marstons Mills, Douglass E. Orcutt of North Yarmouth, Maine, John N. Orcutt of Buxton, Maine; one stepdaughter, Jone Davidson of Yarmouth, Maine; two sisters, Jacqueline Judson of Forestdale, Joan Robinson of Apopka, Fla.; one grandchild; two stepsisters; three step grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held April 25 at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich, followed by burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Sandwich.

Marion E. Snow, 99

Hyannis - Marion Evelyn Snow, 99, a longtime secretary for the Visiting Nurse Association in Hyannis, died April 19, 1998 at the Center for Optimum Care in Mashpee after a long illness.

Born in Brewster, Miss Snow was educated in Dennis and Brewster schools. She lived on the Cape all of her life, spending most years in the villages of Barnstable.

She worked as a secretary for the Visiting Nurse Association in Hyannis for more than 40 years until her retirement in 1963.

She enjoyed bingo, especially while living at the Barnstable Housing facility of 500 Old Colony Boulevard. She was also an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and liked to read.

She is survived by a niece, Barbara A. Beaman of East Bridgewater; three great-nieces; and five great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Graveside funeral services were held April 23 in the Dennis Union Cemetery.

Albert A. Streeter, 95

Hyannis - Albert A. Streeter, 95, a retired manager, died April 22, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Grace I. (Stoughton) Streeter for 70 years, until her death in 1997.

Born and raised in West Springfield, he graduated from West Springfield High School in 1920, where he was a track star. He moved to Centerville in 1971 and then to Hyannis in 1983.

For 51 years Mr. Streeter worked for the United States Envelope Co. in Springfield, now known as Westvaco Corp. He started as an office boy after school during his high school years, rising to the position of manager of the order department. He retired in 1967.

In Springfield, Mr. Streeter was active in the First Baptist Church, the Mitteneague Community Association and the Lions Club. He served with the West Springfield Civil Defense during World War II.

While on the Cape, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hyannis, where he served as deacon for many years.

He enjoyed softball, bowling, gardening and reading.

Surviving are a daughter, Sally Greene of Barnstable; a sister, Barbara Armagost of Medina, N.Y.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late James Streeter.

Funeral services were held April 25 at the First Baptist Church in Hyannis, with burial following in Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable.
