Lawrence C. Ghiorse, 78

Abington - Lawrence C. Ghiorse, 78, who leaves family on the Cape, died May 2, 1998 at Colony House Nursing Home in Abington after a long illness.

He was the husband of Dorothea (LaSpada) Ghiorse.

Mr. Ghiorse was born and raised in Brockton and had lived in Abington since 1954. Mr. Ghiorse was a graduate of the Emerson School of Broadcasting in Boston and had also studied opera.

While serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he received the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge and Aerial Gunner Expert Badge.

He worked at WBET/WCAV Radio in Brockton for 35 years, retiring in 1982 as news director.

As news director he was considered a brother by the Brockton Police Department, and also cohosted the "Dorothy Dale Show."

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas A. Ghiorse of Osterville; a daughter, Elizabeth Scheupbach of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a brother, Kenneth Ghiorse of California.

The funeral was held May 5 from McDonald Funeral Home in South Weymouth, followed by a Mass at the Holy Family Church in Rockland Center.

Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Lois Grant Palches, 93

Concord - Lois Grant Palches, 93, a poet and essayist, and former resident of Osterville and Centerville, died April 27, 1998 at the Rivercrest Deaconess Life Care Facility in Concord from a heart attack.

She was the wife of the Rev. Peter Palches, former pastor of the Osterville Community Church and chaplain with the Cape Cod Council of Churches. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 28.

Born in Guthrie Center, Iowa, she graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. In order to support herself, she took time out from her studies to teach school in upstate New York. She married in 1928 and lived as a minister's wife in Brockton, East Greenwich, R.I., Plymouth, Osterville and Centerville.

Mrs. Palches, a frequent contributor to the Times, authored six books of poems and gave recitals of her poetry in thirty states.

She served as chairman of the Cape Cod Writer's Conference for two years, founded the Twelve O'Clock Scholars Writing Goup of Cape Cod and was a member of the Boston Authors Club since 1945.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Katherine Yolton of Teaticket; a son, Peter Palches of Oak Bluffs; a sister, Evelyn Grant of Franklin, Ind.; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on May 31 at the Trinitarian Congregational Church of Concord.

Edward T. Rome, 84

Yarmouthport - Edward T. Rome, 84, died May 3, 1998 at his Yarmouthport home.

He was the husband of Sophie (Solomon) Rome for 55 years.

Mr. Rome was born and raised in Worcester. The former owner of Rome Building Products in Worcester, he retired to Yarmouthport and Lake Worth, Florida in 1980.

He was a member of Level Lodge, B'nai Brith and Temple Emanuel. He enjoyed being with his family and was an avid sports fan.

Besides his wife, Mr. Rome is survived by a daughter, Margie Rome of Brewster; three sons, Alan Rome of Montpelier, Vt., Howard Rome of Centerville, and David Rome of Brewster; and 11 grandchildren.

Shivah was observed through May 5 at the family residence in Yarmouthport. A funeral service was held May 4 at the Falmouth Jewish Congregation in East Falmouth. Burial followed in Falmouth Jewish Cemetery

Nathalie M. Stoddard, 74

Wakefield - Nathalie M. Stoddard, 74, who leaves a brother in Osterville, died April 30, 1998 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Morris F. Stoddard.

Born in Springfield, she was a 1941 graduate of Wakefield High School and graduated from LaSalle College in 1943.

She was a member and past deaconess of the First Parish Congregational Church, Wakefield, and a member of several boards at the church. She was also a trustee and overseer at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and a member of its Cook-Guillow Society.

Mrs. Stoddard also served as trustee at The Saving Banks, Wakefield, was a member of the Wakefield Garden Club and YMCA Women's Auxiliary and was active on the Alumni Board of LaSalle College.

Surviving are a son, David F. Stoddard of Newbury; two daughters, Meredith Bradley of Arvada, Colo., and Janice Stoddard of Wakefield; a brother, Carlos A. Monge of Osterville; two sisters, Anita NichoIs of Fort Myers, Fla., and Lois Monge of Saugus; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 6 at the First Parish Congregational Church in Wakefield. Burial was private.

Hope Trench, 78

New Canaan, Conn. - Hope (Humphreys) Trench, 78, a longtime resident of New Canaan, Conn., and Hyannisport died April 18, 1998 at her home in New Canaan.

She was the wife of Archer W.P. Trench.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, William H. Trench of South Salem, N.Y.; and three daughters, Deborah T. Wheeler of Washington , D.C., Lee Trench of Littleton and Lauren T. Murphy of Berthoud, Colo.

Marcia Wood, 69

Hyannis - Marcia Wood, 69, died April 27, 1998 as a result of injuries suffered in a fire in her home.

Mrs. Wood was born in Norfolk, Va., and at the age of 12 she moved to New Hampshire.

She was a 1949 graduate of Emerson College in Boston with a bachelor's degree in English literature.

For a brief time she lived in Illinois, then moved to Westfield, N.J. She moved to Hyannis in 1972.

She is survived by a daughter, Claudia Wood of Chatham; and a son, Gregory B. Wood of Dallas.

Funeral services were private. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research, 1115 W. Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02401.

Theodora Bacas

Brockton - Theodora (Pappas) Bacas, who leaves a daughter in Cotuit, died unexpectedly on May 13, 1998 at the Saints Memorial Hospital in Lowell.

She was the wife of the late Andrew G. Bacas.

Mrs. Bacas was born in Politsani, Northern Epiros, Greece. She was a Brockton resident for nearly 30 years. She lived in Billerica for the last three years and also lived in Canton.

Mrs. Bacas and her husband were longtime business owners in Brockton. She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton and the Philopthos Ladies Society. She was also an active member of the Pan-Epirotiko Society.

She was devoted to her home and family, and one of her proudest moments was when she became a United States citizen in 1964.

Surviving are a son, Charles A. Bacas of York, Pa.; three daughters, attorney Florence Bacas-Snow of Cotuit, Truly Boufides of Canton and Francine Tsoukalas of Billerica; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at noon on May 16 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Brockton. Burial followed in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.

John S. Bearse, Jr., 59

St. Cloud, Fla. - John Sturgis Bearse, Jr., 59, formerly of Cotuit, died on May 10, 1998 at the Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee.

He was the husband of Melissa Bearse.

Mr. Bearse was born in Hyannis. He served in the Navy from 1956 to 1962. After his discharge, he lived in Cotuit until moving to Florida in 1985.

He was a captain with the Barnstable County House of Correction and was active in the Blue Knights Police Motorcycle Group of Massachusetts.

Mr. Bearse was a member of Freedom Tabernacle in Kissimmee.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bearse is survived by two daughters, Melissa Bachand of Lyndonville, Vt., and Linda Peruchet of St. Cloud; one son, John S. Bearse III of Orlando, and nine grandchildren.

The funeral was held on May 14.

Yvonne Gauvin, 97

Fall River - Yvonne (Arsenault) Gauvin, 97, who leaves a son in Hyannis, died on May 14, 1998 at the Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River.

She was the wife of the late Raymond G. Gauvin.

A lifelong resident of Fall River, Mrs. Gauvin was a saleswoman for the former R.A. McWhirr Co. for many years.

She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne Sodality and the Third Order of St. Dominic of St. Anne Parish and a former member of the Laurel Apartments Senior Citizens Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Rita Levitre of Florence, S.C., Theresa Padden of Williamsburg, Va., and Cecile Bowers of Fairhaven; two sons, Raymond G. Gauvin of Fall River and Paul A. Gauvin of Hyannis; a brother, Lucien Arsenault of Fall River; two sisters, Beatrice Cote of Guilford, Conn., and Florence Brown of Camarillo, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held at 9:30 a.m. on May 18 from the Auclair Funeral Home, Fall River, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anne Church, Fall River. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catholic Memorial Home, 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720.

Sheffield G. Haddad, 74

Centerville - Sheffield G. Haddad, 74, died on May 16, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community Manor in Hyannis of Parkinson's disease.

Born in East Dedham, Mr. Haddad graduated from Roslindale High School in 1939 and from Northeastern University in Boston in 1944.

After Northeastern, he went to work for the U.S. government at Langley Field in Virginia. Six months later, he entered the Navy. Discharged in 1946, he went to work for Sylvania in Boston for about five years as an electrical engineer.

He was recruited by Hewlett Packard Co. and continued working there until 1973, when at the age of 50, he was forced to retire by poor health.

Mr. Haddad was a member of the Boston chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Nicholas G. Beram Veterans Association of Boston.

He is survived by his wife, May A. (Kazaka) Haddad of Centerville and West Roxbury; a daughter, Joanne B. Irwin of Centerville; a son, Richard S. Haddad of Centerville and West Roxbury; and two grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on May 20 in the Annunciation Cathedral, Roslindale.

Burial was in the Haddad family lot at Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury.
