Paul E. Dionne, 97

Sunday, February 4, 2001

HOLDEN -- Paul E. Dionne, 97, of 502 Salisbury St., a retired shoe salesman, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in Hermitage Nursing Home, Worcester.

His wife of 62 years, Margery E. (Cayford) Dionne, died in 1999. He leaves a son, Raymond Dionne of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Mary Henrich of Holden; a sister, Edith McLaughlin of Hampton, N.H.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Madawaska, Maine, one of 14 children of Raymond and Olive (Sirois) Dionne, and lived in Skowhegan, Maine, and Lewiston, Maine, before moving to Holden in 1980.

Mr. Dionne was a shoe salesman for 35 years at Lamey-Wellehan in Lewiston before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in the Jefferson section of Holden.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7, from Caswell-King Funeral Home, 1147 Main St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson, MA 01522.

Joseph Direnzo, 79

Saturday, January 27, 2001

WORCESTER -- Joseph Direnzo, 79, of 35 Valley View Lane, a World War II veteran and a retired company co-owner and operator, died Thursday, Jan. 25, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Margaret E. (Lyons) Direnzo; a son, Richard C. Direnzo of Worcester; two daughters, Judy Greene and Margaret A. Buffone, both of Worcester; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Barbara A. Direnzo-Smith, died in 1979. Three brothers, Chester, John and James Direnzo, and a granddaughter also predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Salvatore and Margaret (Vuona) Direnzo. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Direnzo co-owned and operated, with his brothers, Direnzo Sand & Gravel Co. for more than 45 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Teamsters Union Local 170, the National Rifle Association, and Singletary Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed gardening.

The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 29, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Carole Dispensiere, 65

CHARLTON -- Carole (Denver) Dispensiere, 65, of Charlton, formerly of Toms River, N.J., a store manager, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester.

Her husband, Louis Dispensiere, died in 1994. She leaves her fiance, Fred Rogers of Charlton; two sons, Louis Dispensiere of Ocean Gate, N.J., and Angelo Dispensiere of Toms River; two daughters, Carol Carrozza of Toms River and Candace Gordijn of Cummings, Ga.; a brother, William Denver of Brick, N.J.; two sisters, Marie Denver of Toms River and Pat Donnelly of Newark, N.J.; and six grandchildren. She was born in Colts Neck, N.J., and lived 32 years in Toms River before moving to Charlton two years ago.

Mrs. Dispensiere was a manager 17 years at Brick Township (N.J.) Cumberland Farms and the past two years at the Oxford Center store.

The memorial service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, in First Baptist Church, 693 Main St., North Oxford. Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Ave., Toms River, is directing arrangements.

Cornelius J. Donahue, was civic activist

WORCESTER -- Cornelius J. Donahue, 80, of 42 Stoneland Road, a World War II veteran and a retired hospital worker, died Monday, Jan. 29, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Catherine M. (Galvin) Donahue; two sons, Kevin J. Donahue of Worcester and William F. Donahue of Honolulu; three sisters, Mary F. McCarthy of San Jose, Calif., Kathleen Paladino and Ann T. Donahue, both of Worcester; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Catherine M. Donahue of Worcester, died in 1995. He was born in Worcester, son of Cornelius J. and Catherine (Donohue) Donahue. He graduated from Commerce High School and Becker College, both in Worcester. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Hugh L. Scott.

Mr. Donahue was head of housekeeping at Worcester City Hospital, where he worked 19 years, retiring in 1991. Previously, he was an administrative secretary to Worcester Mayor Joseph M. Tinsley. He also worked in the Worcester parcel post division of the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a longtime member of St. Peter's Church and president of its Men's Club. He led efforts to raise funds for the church. He was a member of the Emerald Club and received the Shillelagh Award in 1985. He was a member of Main South Community Development Council, Vernon Hill American Legion Post, Knights of Columbus Alhambra Council, and Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a longtime member of the Democratic City Committee and was active in local politics.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, 931 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Parish, 929 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610; or to Mercy Centre for Developmental Disabilities, 25 West Chester St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Robert O. Donnelley, 83

SPRINGFIELD -- Robert O. Donnelley, 83, of 89 Mayher St., formerly of Athol, a retired rate and billing clerk, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Bertha S. (Wright) Donnelley. He was born in Rockland, son of George and Ida M. (Orcutt) Donnelley, and lived in Athol and 56 years in Springfield. He graduated from Rockland high School in 1934.

Mr. Donnelley was a rate and billing clerk 25 years for Frank J. Cole Trucking Co. and six years for Wilbraham Trucking, retiring in 1982. He previously managed Capital Theater and was an order clerk at Union Twist Drill Co., both in Athol, and then worked 11 years for the Boston and Albany division of New York Central Rail Road. After retiring, he was a volunteer school crossing guard. He was a longtime member of Chicopee Falls United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St., Athol. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chicopee Falls United Methodist Church, 55 Broadway, Chicopee, MA 01020, or to another charity.

Florence M. Driscoll, retired school teacher

NORTHBRIDGE -- Florence M. (Sullivan) Driscoll, 94, of 19 Summit St., Whitinsville, a retired elementary school teacher, died Monday, Jan. 29, at home after being stricken ill.

She leaves her husband of 61 years, former state Rep. Charles E. “Luke” Driscoll; a son, Edward M. Driscoll of Whitinsville; two daughters, Mary J. DeYoung of Stonington, Conn., and Kathleen A. Malliarkis of Arlington, Va.; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nephews and nieces. A brother, Raymond Sullivan, predeceased her. She was born in Northbridge, daughter of Dennis and Mary (Joyce) Sullivan. She graduated from Northbridge High School and Worcester Normal School.

Mrs. Driscoll taught at St. Patrick's, Rockdale, Northbridge Grammar, West End and Balmer schools, retiring in 1969. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, its Catholic Women's Council, the Marriage Encounter Movement, and the State Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crossword puzzles, and traveling.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, from Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St., Whitinsville, with a Mass at 12:30 p.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Cross Street. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick's Renovation Fund, 7 East St., PO Box 60, Whitinsville, MA 01588; or to VNA of Greater Milford, 1 Emerson St., Mendon, MA 01756.

James B. Duane, 82, was retired postmaster

FITCHBURG -- James B. Duane, 82, of 6 Beth Ave. in Leominster, formerly of 29 Jeffrey Keating Road in Fitchburg, a retired Fitchburg postmaster, died Monday, Oct. 30, at home after an illness.

His wife of 50 years, Dorothy (Kearns) Duane, died in 1994. He leaves two sons, James M. Duane of Cambridge and Michael O. Duane of East Montpelier, Vt.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Francis J. Duane, died in 1997. He was born in Fitchburg, son of James C. and Bridget (O'Donnell) Duane, and lived most of his life in Fitchburg before moving to the Alterra-Wynwood assisted living residence, Leominster, in 1997. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1936 and from Burdett Business College, Boston, in 1938. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Mr. Duane worked 40 years for the U.S. Postal Service and was appointed postmaster in 1980. After retiring from the post office, he worked in the real estate office of First Service Bank. Before World War II, he was a machinist at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Active in the community, he was a member of St. Bernard's Parish, the Fitchburg Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, Fitchburg Council 99, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Irish American Association, the Sierra Club, the Fitchburg City Democratic Committee and Oak Hill Country Club. He was a founding member of the Young Democrats, and enjoyed reading, politics, swimming and traveling.

The funeral, with full military honors, will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, from Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at noon in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial donations made to Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 99 Church St., Leominster, MA 01453; or may be left at the funeral home.

Ronald S. Duff, 77, Gloria M. Duff, 79

Monday, February 5, 2001

MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. -- Ronald S. and Gloria M. (Lagesse) Duff, of 107 Market St., formerly of Massachusetts, died Saturday, Feb. 3, at home.

They leave a son, Kenneth Geyer of Palm Bay, fla.; a daughter, Judith Duff of Shrewsbury, Mass.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Duff, 77, leaves a sister, Shirley Prescott of Shrewsbury, and Mrs. Duff, 79, leaves a brother, Donald Lagesse of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Duff was born in Worcester, Mass., son of Edward C. and Jeannie (Watson) Duff, and Mrs. Duff was born in Auburn, Mass., daughter of Ernest N. and Mildred P. (Blette) Lagesse. Mr. Duff was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Duff was a steam electric mechanical engineer, and Mrs. Duff was a secretary for Restaurant Corp.

There are no funeral services planned. Wells Funeral Home, Waynesville, is directing arrangements.

Roger R. Duff, 64

LEICESTER -- Roger R. Duff, 64, of 14 Monterey Drive, Cherry Valley, a retired mill hand, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after being stricken ill at home while snow blowing.

He leaves his wife of 26 years, Judith (Dwinell) Duff; three daughters; a brother, Henry J. Duff Jr. of Worcester; and three grandchildren. A sister, Leona Paridis, died last year. He was born in Worcester, son of Henry J. Duff Sr. and Marie I. (Gagnon) Duff, and lived in Worcester before moving here in 1984. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Duff was a mill hand 36 years at Worcester Fibrebatting Co., retiring in 1999.

No funeral service is planned. After cremation, spring burial will be in Cherry Valley Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Morrison-Morin Funeral Home, 1131 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Deborah A. Duffey, 47

SHREWSBURY -- Deborah A. (Adams) Duffey, 47, of 19 Heatherwood Drive, formerly of 27 Milan Ave., Woburn, and formerly of Melrose, a retired accountant, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, at home, after a long struggle with cancer.

She leaves a brother, Richard J. Adams, with whom she lived; a sister, Karen Leger of Hyannis; four nephews and a niece. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Ruth R. (Senecal) Adams, and grew up in Spencer. She lived many years in Woburn and Melrose before moving recently to Shrewsbury. She graduated from David Prouty High School, Spencer, in 1971. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1975, and a master's degree in accounting from Bentley College, Waltham, in 1988.

Mrs. Duffey was an accountant for various companies, including Health Drive in Brookline. She retired because of illness from Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. She also worked part-time for Atlantic Plywood Co. and Hillside Florist, both in Woburn. She was a member of St. Anthony's Church, North Woburn, and was a eucharistic minister at the church.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at noon in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St. After cremation, burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. A calling hour is 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608; or to VNA Hospice Care, 41 Montvale Ave., Stoneham, MA 02180.

Dorina P. Dwyer, 91

GARDNER -- Dorina P. (Poirier) Dwyer, 91, of 116 Church St., a retired nurse's aide, died Thursday, Feb. 1, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home after an illness.

Her husband, Charlie T. Dwyer, died in 1961. She leaves nephews and nieces. She was born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, daughter of Fidele and Marguerite (Daigle) Poirier.

Mrs. Dwyer was a nurse's aide, most recently at Worcester County Hospital, West Boylston, retiring in 1976. She was previously an inspector for Independent Lock Co., Fitchburg, and worked at Florence Stove Co. She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Rosary Church Renovation Fund; or to Holy Rosary School Fund, both 135 Nichols St., Gardner, MA 01440. Boucher Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Nichols St., is directing arrangements.

Don Easterbrooks Jr.

TEMPLETON -- Don E. Easterbrooks Jr., 75, of 370 State Road, Otter River, a World War II veteran and retired millwright, died at home Friday, Feb. 2, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Ethel (Gale) Easterbrooks; a son, Don E. Easterbrooks 3rd of East Templeton; three daughters, Judith Ryan of Wells, Maine, Irene Peters of Manchester, N.H., and Carol Wilcox of Athol; a sister, Ada Newland of East Burke, Vt.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Lee, Guy and Dan Easterbrooks, and two sisters, Eva Flint and Ila Ruggles, predeceased him. He was born in Lyndonville, Vt., son of Don E. and Ida (Sanderson) Easterbrooks, and lived here since 1950. He spent winters in Winter Haven, Fla. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and enlisted twice, serving a total of more than six years.

Mr. Easterbooks was a millwright at the Baldwinville subsidiary of Erving Paper Mill, retiring in 1987. He was a member and trustee of Memorial Congregational Church, Baldwinville, and served as chairman of its Handicapped Ramp Committee and as a former youth group leader. On Sunday, Jan. 28, he was honored as the church's first Trustee Emeritus. He was a member of the American Legion, Baldwinville, and a former member of the Gardner Municipal Golf Course, where he achieved two holes-in-one. He enjoyed softball and pitched for the Polish Club in the Fast-Pitch Softball League.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in Memorial Congregational Church, 4 Memorial St., Baldwinville. Burial will be at a later date in Greenlawn Cemetery, Baldwinville. A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, in the church. Memorial donations may be made to Memorial Congregational Church, PO Box 100, Baldwinville, MA 01436; or to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association and Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440. Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner, is directing arrangements.

Anna Ebbeling, 91

NORTHBRIDGE -- Anna (Oppewall) Ebbeling, 91, of North Main Street, Whitinsville section of Northbridge, died Saturday, Feb. 3, in St. Camillus Health Center, Whitinsville.

Her husband, Henry G. Ebbeling, died in 1979. She leaves a daughter, Carolyn Welsh of New Hartford, N.Y.; a brother, Garret Oppewall of Lynden, Wash.; two sisters, Elsie Visser of Uxbridge, and Tillie Oppewall of Whitinsville. A sister, Jennie Visser, predeceased her. Born in Whitinsville, daughter of Gerbin and Clara (VanderBrug) Oppewall, she attended Northbridge public schools.

Mrs. Ebbeling was a member of the Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church and the Ladies Missionary Society.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the Buma Funeral Home, 480 Church St., Whitinsville. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Providence Road. Calling hours are from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Whitinsville Christian School, 279 Linwood Ave., Whitinsville, MA 01588.
