WORCESTER -- Genevieve (Herrick) Layne, 85, of Worcester, a retired nurse, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus after a short illness.
She leaves a brother, Herbert Herrick of Townsend; a sister, Marguerite Grinkis of Sterling; a granddaughter; nephews and nieces. A son, Michael Layne, two brothers, John and William Herrick, and a sister, Dorothy Tone, predeceased her. Born in Fitchburg, daughter of William and Katherin (Kirby) Herrick, she lived in Sterling before moving to Worcester more than a year ago. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1933.
Mrs. Layne was a nurse more than 20 years at Cushing Hospital, Framingham.
The funeral service will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours. Cremation Society of Massachusetts, 26 Adams St., Quincy, is directing arrangements.

WORCESTER -- Barbara J. (Moore) Lucci, 67, of 22 Melrose St., a former purchasing specialist, died Monday, Feb. 5, at home after a long battle with cancer.
Her husband of 44 years, Joseph C. Lucci, died in 1999. She leaves a son, Charles H. Lucci of Worcester; five daughters, Anne Marie, Joanne, and twins Barbara A. and Florence M. Lucci, all of Worcester, and Brenda Kelosis of Millbury; her mother, Ida M. (Moore) Moore-Isaksen of Worcester; and four grandchildren. A sister, Caroline Moore, predeceased her. Born in Groveton, N.H., daughter of Theodore Moore, she lived many years in St. Johnsbury, Vt., before moving to Worcester 45 years ago. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, where she was a standout basketball player, and Broms Academy, Boston.
Mrs. Lucci was a purchasing specialist 11 years for Fallon Community Health Plan. Previously, she worked 13 years in the surety claims department of State Mutual of America Insurance Co. She also worked for Rob Roy and Denholm-McKay, and taught ballroom dance in New York City.
In 1952, she was crowned Miss Vermont and represented her state in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. She enjoyed gardening, reading, photography and traveling.
The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 9, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in the funeral home. PUTNAM -- Katherine F. (Meehan) McEvoy, 80, of 136 Church St., a retired legal secretary, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, at home after a long illness.
She leaves her husband of 44 years, Vincent J. “Mac” McEvoy; a son, James E. McEvoy of Salem, Mass.; a daughter, Mary Brumand of Chandler, Ariz.; two grandchildren. She was born in Putnam, daughter of James and Nora (Healy) Meehan. She graduated from Woodstock Academy and later attended the University of Connecticut.
Mrs. McEvoy was a legal secretary for lawyer John Maher, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of St. Mary Church; Daughters of Isabella and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Albert J. Breault Post 1523 Ladies Auxiliary.
The funeral will be held at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, from Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence St. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. WESTON, W.Va. -- George E. Morris, 88, of 169 Cottage Ave., formerly of Grafton, Mass., died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
His wife, Jane L. Morris, predeceased him. He leaves two daughters, Shelley Morris of Weston and Kathy Lewis of Marlborough, N.H.; a sister, Essie Penniman of Charlton, Mass.; four grandchildren. A sister, Evelyn Ullstrom, and a brother, Sven W. Morris, predeceased him. He was born in Grafton, son of William and Mary (Nyquist) Morris. A World War II Army veteran, he served in Europe.

CHARLTON -- Helen E. (O'Rourke) Nichols, 87, of 15 Center Depot Road, a retired optical company worker, died Monday, Feb. 5, in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Route 169.
Her husband, Thomas J. Nichols Sr., died in 1961. She leaves a daughter, Helen E. Fournier of Charlton; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A son, Thomas J. Nichols Jr. of Charlton, died in 1997. Born in Somerville, daughter of John and Margaret O'Rourke, she lived in Charlton since 1929.
Mrs. Nichols worked 45 years at American Optical Co., Southbridge, retiring in 1975. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

GRAFTON, Ohio -- Edward W. St. Andre, 73, of Grafton, a retired supervisor, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, at home after a short illness.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Loretta C. (DePasquale) St. Andre; two sons; two daughters; a brother; a sister, Lorraine Ricardi of West Boylston, Mass.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was born in Springfield, Mass., and lived in North Olmsted and 22 years in Grafton. He was a World War II Army veteran.
Mr. St. Andre was a supervisor 10 years for John M. Allen Co., Strongsville, retiring in 1990. He was a member of North Eaton Christian Church.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Marilyn (Malloy) Bogdanowicz-Thibeault, 63, of 4529 Saunders Drive, formerly of School Street in Webster, Mass., a retired quality control inspector, died Sunday, Jan. 28, in Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.
Her husband of 21 years, Charles Bogdanowicz, died in 1995. She leaves a son, Normand E. Thibeault Jr. of West Boylston, Mass.; three daughters, Charlene M. Atchue of Keene, N.H., Debbra A. Paille and Sharon L. Douglas, both of South Grafton, Mass.; a brother, Douglas Malloy of Smith, Ala.; three sisters, Rose M. Fedler of Southbridge, Mass., Theresa Malloy of Dudley, Mass., and Eileen Clouthier of Boxsprings; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Donald Malloy of Ellerslie and Bill Malloy of Auburn, Mass., and a sister, Alice Devio of Spencer, Mass., predeceased her. Born in Worcester, daughter of William and Eva (Bishop) Malloy, she lived many years in Charlton, Mass., and Webster before moving to Georgia in 1995.
Mrs. Bogdanowicz-Thibeault was a quality control inspector at Sprague Electric, Worcester, and five years at Hyde Tool Manufacturing, Southbridge, retiring because of disability in 1993. She attended St. Louis Church, Webster.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Anne (Tobey) Thornton, 79, of 2251 Curtis Drive South, formerly of Worcester, Mass., a former insurance company clerk, died Sunday, Feb. 4, in Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg, from complications resulting from an automobile accident.
Her husband of 36 years, John W. Thornton, died in 1995. She leaves a daughter, Susan R. Rosa of Pomfret Center, Conn.; a brother, Frederick Tobey of Ontario; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Gregory C. Mahan of Oxford, Mass., died in 1999. A daughter, Sharon A. Thornton of Worcester, died in 1993. Another daughter, Jean M. Burke of Upton, Mass., died last year. Born in Meota, Saskatchewan, and raised in Clearwater, daughter of Fred W. and Olive (Arnold) Tobey, she lived 50 years in Worcester before returning to Clearwater in 1996.
Mrs. Thornton was a clerk for Allstate Insurance Co. She was a former member of the Emblem Club.

LEOMINSTER -- Irene M. (Davignon) Tietgens, 91, of 42 Lourdes Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, in Birchwood Care Center after an illness.
Her husband, Adolph N. Tietgens, died in 1972. She leaves two sons, Christian A. Tietegens of Leominster and Francis L. Tietgens of Westminster; two daughters, Carolyn I. Jordan of Enfield, Conn., and Marian E. Tietgens of Leominster; a sister, Bertha Rousseau of Adams; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. Born in North Adams, daughter of Moise and Hermine (Millott) Davignon, she lived in Athol before moving to Leominster in 1954.
Mrs. Tietgens was a clerk at the former Park Snows Department Store in Fitchburg. She and her husband owned and operated Sprague & Donnelly Package Store in Fitchburg, retiring in 1971.
She enjoyed bingo, bridge and collecting stamps. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church.
The funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 9, from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St. Burial will be private in St. Bernard's Cemetery. GRAFTON -- Ricardo Torres, 28, of 55 Barbara Jean St., a self-employed Web consultant, died Friday, Feb. 2, at home after an 18-month struggle with a brain tumor.
He leaves his wife, Elizabeth M. (Hable) Torres; his father, Marcelo Torres of Simsbury, Conn.; his mother, Maria-Lena Phillipe of Farmington, Conn.; a brother, Marcelo Torres of Cambridge; and his maternal grandfather, Ricardo Phillipe of Mexico City, Mexico. Born and raised in Simsbury, he lived eight years in Cambridge before moving to Grafton two years ago. He graduated from Simsbury High School and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge.
Mr. Torres was a member of Evangelical Congregational Church.

THOMPSON -- Sylvia G. (Hicks) Valade, 87, of Pineview Court, retired owner and operator of Valade Funeral Home, North Grosvenordale, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, at her son's home in East Thompson.
Her husband, Joseph A. Valade Sr., died in 1966. She leaves a son, Charles R. Valade of East Thompson; two daughters, Beverly Negip of Thompson and Marie Czechowski of Webster; four brothers, Howard and Cecil Hicks, both of Sackville, New Brunswick, Kenneth Hicks of Moncton, New Brunswick, and Guptill Hicks of St. John, New Brunswick; two sisters, Glenara Anderson of Middle Sackville and Hilda Brooks of Spring Hill, Nova Scotia; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A son, Joseph A. Valade Jr., died in 1999. Born in Port Elgin, New Brunswick, daughter of Hedley and Ida (Fillmore) Hicks, she came to the United States in 1934. She graduated as a licensed practical nurse from a Boston nursing school.
Mrs. Valade worked 18 years in Harrington Memorial Hospital's nursery, Southbridge. After the death of her husband, she assumed operation of Valade Funeral Home, which she operated with her son, Joseph, until selling the business in 1980, when she retired.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, Sackville, and the Golden Harvest Senior Citizen Group, and a former member of Royal Travelers.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in Emanuel Lutheran Church, 83 Main St., North Grosvenordale. After cremation, burial will be at the family's convenience.
