George Markarian, 71

Thursday, April 5, 2001

WORCESTER -- George J. Markarian, 71, of Worcester, formerly of 2 Cobblestone Lane in Worcester, and formerly of Mill Road in Boylston, a retired business owner, died Tuesday, April 3, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus.

His wife, Ruth (Lamoreux) Markarian, died in 1980. He leaves a son, George S. Markarian of Westwood; a sister, Queenie Eknaian of Worcester; two grandsons, Gabriel Unumb and David Markarian, both of Westwood; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Serop and Victoria (Toudanjian) Markarian. He graduated from Commerce High School and attended Worcester Vocational Institute. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. He served eight years in the Army Reserves.

Mr. Markarian owned and operated Horton's Super Market, Shrewsbury, from 1958 to 1980, Market on Wheels, serving Great Brook Valley, from 1969 to 1980, and Ivy Kitchen Restaurant from 1985 to 1990. He was a member of Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church and its Men's Club, and a former member of the Armenian-American Civic Club.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, in Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 635 Grove St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. A Dangark service will be held at 7:30 p.m. during the calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 635 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605.

Lawrence G. McLachlan

WEBSTER -- Lawrence G. McLachlan, 88, of 8 Clark St., a retired truck driver, died Thursday, April 5, at Webster Manor.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Dorothy A. (Downs) McLachlan; two sons, Laurence J. and Robert M. McLachlan, both of Webster; a daughter, Joan F. Bruso of Methuen; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. Three brothers and two sisters predeceased him. Born in Lawrence, son of John and Josephine (Kelley) McLachlan, he graduated from Lawrence High School.

Mr. McLachlan worked over 30 years as a truck driver for Wajer's Express, Dudley, before retiring.

He was a member of St. Louis Church and Webster-Dudley Knights of Columbus Council 228. He also belonged to the Webster Lodge of Elks 1466, the Athletic Booster's Club, Webster Fish & Game Club, and was a 50-year member of the Teamsters Union. He was a deputy sheriff of Worcester County.

The funeral will be held on Monday, April 9, from the Scanlon Funeral Service, East Main Street, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Louis Church, 15 Lake St. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Louis School Endowment Fund, 15 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570.

Thomas Murray Sr., 83

HOLDEN -- Thomas M. Murray Sr., 83, of 1 Brentwood Drive, a retired electrical engineer, died Friday, April 6, in Oakdale Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center, West Boylston, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Mary L. (Groose) Murray; two sons, Thomas M. Murray Jr. of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Christopher B. Murray of East Boston; a daughter, Carol Vitercik of Lincoln, Vt.; and three grandchildren. He was born in Taunton, son of Thomas F. and Edith (Haskins) Murray, and lived 47 years in Holden. He graduated from Northeastern University, Boston. He served in the Army.

Mr. Murray was an electrical engineer and was division manager for district engineering at New England Power Co., Worcester, where he worked 47 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Friends of the Holden Council on Aging and the National Woodcarving Association. He enjoyed photography and travel.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9, in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will be at a later date in Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Kathleen S. Odgren, 79

AUBURN -- Kathleen S. (MacLean) Odgren, 79, of Auburn and Prince Edward Island, a retired medical secretary, died Saturday, April 7, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, after an illness.

Her husband, Holgar W. Odgren, died in 1991. She leaves a son, David J. Odgren of Auburn; three brothers, Gordon C. MacLean of Leicester, John G. MacLean of Auburn, and Fred L. MacLean of Prince Edward Island; three sisters, Thelma L. Woodward of Prince Edward Island, Dell M. MacLean of Auburn, and Hazel DiBenidetto of Shrewsbury; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Worcester, daughter of Spurgeon and Rebecca J. (Howard) MacLean, she graduated from Worcester Girls Trade High School in 1939. She lived in Worcester before moving to Auburn and Prince Edward Island.

Mrs. Odgren worked 35 years for Dr. Gordon Milne in Auburn, retiring in 1990.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Worcester.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the Linquist-Lundin Funeral Home, 36 Butler St., Worcester. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 9, in the funeral home. Virendra M. Patel, 50

SHREWSBURY -- Virendra M. Patel, 50, of 35 Thomas Farm Circle, died Friday, March 30, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife, Alka V. (Patel) Patel; two sons, Raj V. and Kush V. Patel, both of Shrewsbury; and his mother, Kapilaben (Patel) Patel of Shrewsbury. Born in Kampala, Uganda, son of Manubhai Patel, he received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in England and his master's in computer science from Boston University. He lived in Westboro several years before moving to Shrewsbury 9 years ago.

Mr. Patel worked the past 15 months as an information technology consultant and systems administrator for Broadbase Inc., Natick.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the Ellen Rogers Kennedy Memorial Chapel and Crematory, 180 Grove St., Worcester. There are no calling hours. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Biruta M. Pustis, 65

NORTH WATERBORO, Maine -- Biruta M. Pustis, 65, of North Waterboro, formerly of Worcester and West Boylston, Mass., died Friday, March 30, in York Hospital, York.

She leaves her husband of 47 years, John F. Pustis of North Waterboro; four sons, John J. Pustis of Shrewsbury, Robert R. Pustis of Londonderry, N.H., Scott S. Pustis of Shrewsbury, and Kenneth K. Pustis of Andover; two daughters, Nancy A. McKeton of Barrington, N.H., and Mary Beth Clason of North Waterboro; a sister, Mary Anne Valinski of Fishkill, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Worcester, daughter of Feliksa and Anna Alexandravicius Trunce, she graduated from Classical High School, Worcester, and attended Springfield College.

Mrs. Pustis worked for the Fortin Market, Worcester, Guarantee Bank, and Children's Orchard of Westboro before moving to Maine.

She was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Parish, West Boylston, and their Women's Club. For many years, she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout troop leader. She was involved with the Sunset Beach Swim Team. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 134, Alfred, and the Waterboro Lions Club. She enjoyed reading, walking, swimming, and fishing.

The funeral will be held Monday, April 2, from Heald Funeral Home, Limerick Chapel, 25 Sokokis Trail North, Limerick, with a Mass at 1 p.m. in St. Mathews Roman Catholic Church, Limerick. A calling period is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909.

Raymond Rondeau, 78

AUBURN -- Raymond Rondeau, 78, of 47 Elmwood St., a retired accountant and World War II veteran, died Saturday, March 31, in Hermitage Nursing Home, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Shirley A. (Potter) Rondeau of Auburn; two daughters, Jeanne Cooper of Newton and Nancy Murphy of Everett, Wash.; a sister, Elsie Willet of Rutland; three grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. A brother, Edmond Rondeau, and a sister, Theresa Catacchio both of Shrewsbury, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Louis and Marie Louise (Pelletier) Rondeau, moved to Auburn in 1966. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School, and was an Army Air Forces veteran.

Mr. Rondeau was a self-employed accountant more than 40 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of North American Martyrs Church and the Holy Name Alumni Association. He was also a member of the China Burma India Veterans Association and the American Legion Chester P. Tuttle Post in Auburn.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hermitage Nursing Home Recreation Fund, 383 Mill St., Worcester, MA 01602. Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Rita O. Canney, 85

RUTLAND -- Rita O. (Crepeau) Canney, 85, of 20 Naquag St., a registered nurse and a business co-owner who was active in the community, died Tuesday, April 10, in Holden Nursing Home, after an illness.

Her husband of 25 years, John Canney, died in 1962. She leaves two brothers, Alfred Crepeau of North Grafton and Roland Crepeau of East Hartford, Conn.; two nephews; a niece; grandnephews and grandnieces. She was born in Woonsocket, R.I., son of Alfred J. and Marie J. (Bushey) Crepeau, and lived in Rutland for 68 years. She graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester, in 1932. She trained at Rutland State Sanitarium, and graduated from the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in Boston.

Mrs. Canney was a registered nurse at the Rutland State Sanitarium and the Rutland Veterans Administration Hospital, retiring as a nursing supervisor from Rutland Heights Hospital in 1976. Along with her husband, she also owned and operated Happy Valley General Store.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, the Rutland Historical Society, the Civil Defense Unit and the Worcester Diocese Council of Catholic Nurses. Mrs. Canney worked for the town board of registrars, and was a census taker. She helped initiate the MERGE program, a senior emergency medical information registration program. She enjoyed crocheting afghans.

The funeral will be held Saturday, April 14, from Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, with a Liturgy of the Word at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 258 Main St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick's Church Building Fund, 258 Main St., Rutland, MA 01543; or to MERGE Program, c/o Rutland Police Department, Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543.

Kathleen M. Savoy, 90

WESTBORO -- Kathleen M. “Kay” (Roche) Savoy, 90, of 5 Colonial Drive, formerly of Elm Street and Beach Street, a retired nurse, died Monday, April 9, in Westboro Health Care Center, after a long illness.

Her husband, Franklin O. Savoy, died in 1961. She leaves a sister, Eleanore D. Kenney of Hopedale; a brother, Richard C. Roche of Westboro; nephews and nieces. A sister, Mary E. Roche of Westboro, died in February; another sister, Ann M. Roche of Westboro, died in 1995; a brother, John W. Roche of Oakland, Calif., died in 1999; and another brother, Maurice M. Roche of Westboro, died in 1992. She was born and raised in Westboro, daughter of John W. and Mary (Durkin) Roche, and lived many years in Greenwich, Conn., and Wellesley before returning to Westboro 14 years ago. She graduated from Bridgeport (Conn.) School of Nursing and from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, Brighton.

Mrs. Savoy was a licensed practical nurse at Greenwich Hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, and Wellesley Manor Nursing Home. She also was a private duty nurse. She was a member of St. Luke the Evangelist Church, Daughters of Isabella and the Westboro Community Chorus, and was treasurer of the 100th Town Chorus. She was a pianist.

The Liturgy of the Word will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 12, in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke the Evangelist Church Memorial Fund, 70 West Main St., Westboro, MA 01581. Britton-Summers Funeral Home, 4 Church St., is directing arrangements.

Anne P. Turbidy, 85

WEBSTER -- Anne P. (Ivascyn) Turbidy, 85, of 43 Morris St., died Tuesday, April 10, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Robert J. Miller Funeral Home and Lake Chapel, 366 School St., are incomplete.

Mary A. Burbee, 83

WEBSTER -- Mary A. (Martin) Burbee, 83, of 64 Chase Ave., died Thursday, April 12, in Webster Manor.

Her husband, Andrew J. Burbee, died Nov. 3. She leaves a son, Terence G. Burbee of Webster; a daughter, Charlene Marlborough of Dudley; a brother, George Martin of the North Grosvenordale section of Thompson; two sisters, Leona Strezelewicz of Wilsonville, Conn., and Theresa Chauvin of North Thompson; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in North Grosvenordale, daughter of Ferdinand and Mary (Aubin) Martin, and lived most of her life in Webster.

Mrs. Burbee was an accomplished seamstress and clothing designer. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Worcester, and enjoyed camping.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, in Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School St. Burial will be at the family's convenience. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Support Network, Box 839, Southbridge, MA 01550.

UPTON -- Helen M. Carroll, 84, of 68 Christian Hill Road, a retired bookkeeper, died Sunday, July 8, in Upton Nursing Center, where she was a patient the past six months.

She leaves two sisters, Alice F. and Mary L. Carroll, both with whom she lived; a brother, John J. Carroll of Attleboro; two nieces and a nephew. A sister, Rita G. Carroll of Upton, died in 1995. She was born in Milford, daughter of Joseph A. and Mary L. (Gorman) Carroll, and was raised in Rutland. She lived in Upton since 1951. She graduated from Rutland High School and attended Becker Junior College, Worcester.

Miss Carroll was a bookkeeper for area companies, including Bay State Abrasives in Westboro, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Holy Angels Parish and enjoyed baseball.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 10, from Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, 1 Milford St. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. A calling hour is 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Upton Ambulance Fund, PO Box 29, Upton, MA 01568.
