Louise B. Arey, 94

Wednesday, April 11, 2001

LEOMINSTER -- Louise B. (Beedle) Arey, 94, of 34 Crestfield Lane, a retired nurse, died Monday, April 9, in Fairlawn Nursing Home.

Her husband, Bertram C. Arey, died in 1980. She leaves a nephew, John L. Todd of Leominster; two nieces, Betty Schlenker in California and Ruth Buckingham in Georgia; grandnephews and grandnieces. A son, Peter E. Stone, died in 1987. A brother, Roger Beedle, and a sister, Florence “Betty” Todd, also predeceased her. She was born in Keene, N.H., daughter of Dr. Claude D. and Hortense E. (Martin) Beedle, and grew up in Leominster. She lived 30 years in South Wellfleet before returning to Leominster four years ago. She was a graduate of Leominster High School and a 1928 graduate of the Leominster Hospital School of Nursing, and attended Columbia University Nursing School.

Mrs. Arey was a registered nurse at Catherine Gibbs School, Boston, before retiring. She was a member of First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist. While in South Wellfleet, she was a member of the Historical Society and Friends of the Library. She was a volunteer at A.I.M. Medical Center.

Mrs. Arey donated her body to Tufts Medical School, Boston, for education and research. The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4, in First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist, 1 Harwich Road, Brewster. Private burial will be at a later date in South Wellfleet Cemetery, South Wellfleet. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Parish Brewster Endowment Fund, 1 Harwich Road, Brewster, MA 02631. Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., is directing arrangements.

Infant Aviles

Sunday, April 8, 2001

ATHOL -- Zachary Scott Aviles, infant son of Joseph Aviles and Melissa Martioski of 17 Pine St., died Friday, April 6, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester.

Besides his parents, he leaves his paternal grandparents, Marvin L. Norway Jr. and Theresa M. (Aviles) Norway of Athol; his maternal grandparents, Daniel P. Martioski of Gardner and Mary A. (Andrews) Martioski of Athol; his paternal great-grandparents, Harold and Joan (Williamson) Dupille of East Templeton; and his paternal step-great-grandparents, Marvin and Rosemarie (Cormier) Norway of Gardner. He was born in Gardner.

The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Boucher Funeral Home Inc., 110 Nichols St., Gardner. Burial will be at a later date in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to United Way of North Central Inc., 310 Central St., Gardner, MA 01440.

Alan B. Bagley, 92

LEOMINSTER -- Alan B. Bagley, 92, of 803 Pleasant St., a retired government attorney, died Wednesday, April 11, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital.

He leaves several cousins, including Marion C. Pritchard, with whom he lived, and Natalie Y. McKenney of Gardiner, Maine. He was born in Berwick, Maine, son of John P. and Jennie T. (Beecher) Bagley, and moved to Arlington, Va. in 1935. He moved to Leominster eight years ago. He attended the University of Florida, and received a bachelor's degree from Boston University. He graduated from BU's law school in 1933.

Mr. Bagley was an attorney many years for the Bureau of National Affairs in Washington, D.C., retiring several years ago.

The funeral service and burial will be private in Columbian Gardens Cemetery in Arlington. There are no calling hours. Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., is directing arrangements.

Harry S. Baird, 93

Monday, April 9, 2001

WORCESTER -- Harry S. Baird, 93, of Indian Hill Road, a former vice president and director of Barnard, Sumner and Putnam Department Store and veteran of World War II, died Saturday, April 7, in Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 67 years, Marie F. (Doner) Baird, and a cousin. Born in Kane, Pa., son of Shaner and Florence (Valentour) Baird, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in Asia. He graduated from Franklin Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. He lived 55 years in Worcester.

Mr. Baird was vice president and a director of Barnard, Sumner and Putnam Department Store, Worcester, where he worked 35 years. Previously, he worked for Scranton Dry Goods, Scranton, Pa.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A calling period is 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

George Barrows, 83

WORCESTER -- George Barrows, 83, of 39 Queen St., died Thursday, April 5, in St. Mary Health Care Center after an illness. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., is directing funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.

Laura A. Bartlett, 80

SHREWSBURY -- Laura A. (Jokela) Bartlett, 80, of 30 Julio Drive, formerly of 36 Westmont Road, died Tuesday, April 10, in Southgate at Shrewsbury after an illness.

Her husband of 50 years, George H. Bartlett, died in 1991. She leaves three daughters, Carol A. Sheehan of Tulsa, Okla., Laraine D. Bartlett and Jan Bryan, both of Shrewsbury; a brother, Reino Jokela of Blairsville, Ga.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. A brother, Richard Jokela, died in 1986. A sister, Aili Perodeau, died in 1999. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Manne and Helvi (Puolanmaa) Jokela, and lived many years in Shrewsbury. She graduated from Commerce High School and Becker Junior College, both in Worcester.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, the Shrewsbury Women's Club, and the Seniors Club of Shrewsbury. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Chaffins Women's Club, and the YMCA, all of Worcester.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, Church Road. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St. Donations may be made to Faulkner Hospital, Breast Cancer Center, 1153 Centre St., Boston, MA 02130.

Dennis J. Basmajian, 33

WORCESTER -- Dennis J. Basmajian, 33, of 27 Forbes St., formerly of New York, a local painter, died Friday, March 30, at home.

He leaves a son, Blake L. Basmajian of Templeton; a stepson, Michael Curley of Templeton; his father, Dennis M. Basmajian of Estill Springs, Tenn.; two sisters, Debra M. Richards and Francine F. Morton, both of Millbury; nephews and nieces. His mother, Bonnie Lou (Fallon) Basmajian, and a sister, Dina Basmajian, predeceased him. He was born in Utica, N.Y. and had lived four years in Worcester. He attended Shrewsbury High School.

Mr. Basmajian was a painter for Langway and Sons Painting in Millbury for four years. He was a mason for Bast Co. in New York for six years.

He enjoyed dirt bike riding.

The memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in St. Brigid's Church, 59 Main St., Millbury. Burial will be at a later date in New York. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital, 181 Grafton St., Worcester, MA 01604. Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, is directing the arrangements.

Barbara L. Bates, 78

Friday, April 13, 2001

THOMPSON -- Barbara L. (Ramey) Bates, 78, of Stawicki Road, North Grosvenordale, a World War II veteran, died Wednesday, April 11, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after an illness.

She leaves her husband, Raymond A. Bates; a daughter, Laurie Bates-Santerre of North Grosvenordale; a son, Kenneth P. Bates of East Brookfield; and four grandchildren. A son, Gregory Bates, died in 1984. She was born in Washington, D.C., daughter of Paul and Ruth (Embry) Ramey, and lived most of her life in Thompson. She was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Transport Command.

Mrs. Bates was a homemaker.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, in Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 238 West Town St., Norwich, CT 06360.

Doris I. Beauregard, 86

WARE -- Doris I. (Dubois) Beauregard, 86, formerly of 15A Highland Village, a retired spinner, died Tuesday, April 3, in Sunbridge of Hadley.

Her husband, Wilfred Beauregard, died in 1980. She leaves two sons, Roger Beauregard of Alabama and Carl Beauregard of Ware; a daughter, Joan Miner of East Longmeadow; a sister, Agnes Berthiaume of New York; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was born in Hardwick, daughter of Lendolph and Dora (Magnan) Dubois, and lived in Ware since 1935.

Mrs. Beauregard was a spinner for Ware Woolen Co., retiring in 1946. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church its Ladies of St. Anne, the Ware Golden Agers, and the Daughters of Isabella.

The funeral will be held Friday, April 6, from Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in All Saints Church, North Street. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the funeral home.

Marguerite Bedig, 82

Wednesday, February 21, 2001

HYDE PARK -- Marguerite (Sahag) Bedig, 82, of Hyde Park, formerly of Worcester, died Monday, Feb. 19, in South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, after a brief illness.

She leaves a daughter, Lisa D. Corey of South Weymouth; two sisters, Elizabeth Costello of Hyde Park and Lillian Chilingerian of Waltham; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born and raised in Roxbury, and lived 13 years in Worcester and 50 years in Hyde Park.

Mrs. Bedig was a hairstylist in Roslindale, Westwood, and Hyde Park. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing the piano and singing.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, from McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth, 809 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Old South Union Church, 25 Columbian St., South Weymouth. Interment will be in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in the funeral home.

Sister Mary Donalda

MARLBORO -- Sister Mary Donalda of the Sacred Heart, 92, a Sister of St. Anne and former educator, died Wednesday, April 11, at Marie Esther Health Center.

She leaves a brother, Joseph Belanger of New Port Richey, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. Born Emeline Belanger in Worcester, daughter of Cyrille and Eva (Bissonnette) Belanger, she completed a commercial course at the former Holy Family School, Worcester. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Catholic Teachers College, Providence, and a bachelor's degree in commerce from College of St. Rose, Albany, N.Y.

In 1927, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Anne in Quebec, and was professed in 1929. She first taught at St. Jerome Business School, Quebec. In 1940, she transferred to Notre Dame Academy, Worcester and later taught at Notre Dame High School, Central Falls, R.I. She then spent over 15 years at Anna Maria College, Paxton, where she was in charge of the book distribution department. She then transferred to St. Anne Convent in Marlboro, working as a receptionist and rendering many other community services. In 1990, due to declining health, she entered Marie Esther Health Center.

The Liturgy of the Word will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in St. Anne Convent Chapel, 720 Boston Post Road. A visiting hour is from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, in the convent chapel. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, in St. Anne Convent Chapel. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan, Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home, 378 Lincoln St. Memorial donations may be made to Marie Esther Health Center, 720 Boston Post Road, Marlboro, MA 01752, or to a charity of one's choice.
