Richard M. Stanhope

Monday, May 7, 2001

SOUTHBRIDGE -- Richard M. Stanhope, 50, of Pleasant Street, died Saturday, May 5, in Harrington Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at home.

He leaves his wife, Marsha (Soucy) Stanhope of Oxford; two brothers, William Stanhope Jr. of Charlton and Kenneth Stanhope of West Warren; two sisters, Carol Smith and Gail Stanhope, both of Southbridge; his maternal grandmother, Rose (Girard) Ford of Southbridge; two stepsons, David Bennett of Oxford and Philip Bennett of Southbridge; a stepdaughter, Sandy Gauthier of Oxford; six step-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. A sister, Mildred Lewis, died in 1997. He was born in Southbridge, son of William and Mildred (Ford) Stanhope.

Mr. Stanhope worked at the Cracker Barrell Restaurant in Sturbridge, and previously owned and operated Tetreault's Spa many years.

He enjoyed deep sea fishing.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, in Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Zigmont J. Boris, 86

GARDNER -- Zigmont J. Boris, 86, of 121 Barthel Ave., died Sunday, May 6, in the LaChance Center for Nursing and Rehabilitaion after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Sophie (Kulis) Boris; a daughter, Marilyn Rhodes of Gardner; two brothers, Charles Boris of Gardner and John Boris of Brewster; two sisters, Jadwiga Boris of Gardner and Stacy Sulkoski of Worcester; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A brother, Valerian Boris of Buffalo, N.Y., died in 1994. He was born in Gardner, son of Jan and Stanislawa (Wisnewski) Boris, and attended Gardner High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He served in the battles and campaigns of Rome-Arno, the North Apennines and the Po Valley.

He worked at the former Heywood Wakefield Co for 50 years, retiring in 1979. He was a former member of the Polish-American Citizens Club and Country Club. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Ovila Case Post Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 905, and the Gardner Golden Age Club.

The funeral will be held Thursday, May 10, from Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. 358 Pleasant St. Burial will be at a later date. A calling period will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gardner Visiting Nurses Association, 43 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440; or the Leo P. LaChance Activity Fund, c/o The LaChance Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, 59 Eastwood Circle, Gardner, MA 01440.

Jack Magune, 84

Monday, May 7, 2001

WORCESTER -- Jack Magune, 84, of 22 Franconia St., fought in the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, died Friday, May 4, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 31 years, Margaret L. (Woodward) Magune; two sisters, Marjorie L. Curtis of Worcester and Avilla Clarkson of Auburn; nephews and nieces. A brother, Robert R. Magune, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Dr. Frank and Mildred A. (Richards) Magune and lived in Worcester most of his life. He graduated from Classical High School, Worcester and the Leland Powers Theater School in Boston. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and participated in the pivotal 1945 capture of the Island of Iwo Jima, south of Japan. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves with the rank of major.

Mr. Magune had a long career as a professional actor, director and producer including an affiliation with Foothills Theatre in Worcester for more than 20 years, before retiring in 1995. Earlier in his career, he had performed on Broadway and in Hollywood films. He was a member of Actor's Equity. He also worked in radio broadcasting and used the stage and radio name Dick Burgess. He also owned and operated for many years the House of Billy Yank, a Civl War relics and memorabilia trading business. Mr. Magune was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Athelstan Lodge of Masons.

The memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Ellen Rogers Kennedy Memorial Chapel, Rural Cemetery, 180 Grove St. Burial in Rural Cemetery will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made Foothills Theatre, 100 Front St., Worcester 01608 The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing funeral arrangements.

Mary Carleton, 74; longtime medical secretary

HUDSON -- Mary (Harasko) Carleton, 74, of 1 Pleasant St., died Sunday, May 6, at home after a brief illness.

She leaves her husband of 45 years, Henry K. Carleton Jr.; a son, Peter K. Carleton of Hudson; two sisters, Ann Silva and Antoinette Harakso, both of Hudson; two granddaughters, Jennifer M. and Amy L. Cormier, both of Northboro; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Rebecca A. Cormier, died in 1996. She was born in Westford, daughter of James and Hannah (Teresevich) Harasko, and moved to Hudson in 1940. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1944.

Mrs. Carleton was a medical secretary many years for Dr. Wilfred T. Hood.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and its choir. She was a member of the Hudson Women's Club. She enjoyed knitting, rug making, and oil painting.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in First United Methodist Church, 34 Felton St. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in Merrill-Carleton Funeral Home, 1 Pleasant St. Donations may be made to UMass Memorial Hospice, 43 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609 or the Organ Fund, First United Methodist Church, 34 Felton St., Hudson, MA 01749.

Robert P. Cote, 76

OXFORD -- Robert P. Cote, 76, of Beverly Street, a building superintendent, died Friday, May 11, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, after being stricken ill.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Natalie R. (Waitkus) Cote of Oxford; a son, Robert E. Cote of Ocean Springs, Miss.; three daughters, Ruth M. Cahill of Charlton, Laurie A. Boucher of Oxford and Shirley M. Cote of D'Iberville, Mo.; three sisters, Jeanette Palmer of Fresno, Calif., Rita Alden of Florida and Theresa Williams of Punta Gorda, Fla.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter Cote of Connecticut and Gerard Cote of Worcester; and three sisters, Cecile Bouvier of Grafton, and Irene McNally and Doris Kaderis, both of Worcester. He was born in Worcester, son of Alphonse and Osite (Plaisance) Cote, and lived 16 years in Worcester and eight years in Auburn. He moved back to Worcester and then lived in California for several years. He moved to Oxford in 1957. He attended South High School in Worcester. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Cote was a building superintendent for Freedom Federal Savings Bank in Worcester for 15 years, retiring in 1986. He previously worked at Lodding Engineering, Auburn, as a machinist and Hayward Ford Co as a mechanic. He also worked for the Oxford School Department in the maintenance department for several years. He was co-owner of Cote Bros. and B & C Construction in Oxford for several years. He was a member of St. Ann's Church in North Oxford, the Bishop O'Reilly Assembly Fourth Degree Knight and the Oxford Council Knights of Columbus #4241. He was a member of the Oxford American Legion Post 58, the Golden Age Club, the Council on Aging and a member of the Senior Chorus at the Senior Center.

The military funeral will be held Wednesday, May 16, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church, 652 Main St., North Oxford. Burial will be in North Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, at the funeral home. The Oxford Council Knights of Columbus will conduct their service Tuesday, May 15 at 7 pm in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, c/o St. Ann's Church, PO Box 488, North Oxford, 01537 or to the Oxford Senior Center, 325 Main Street, Oxford, MA 01540.

Rose E. Gadbois, 82

NORTH BROOKFIELD -- Rose E. Gadbois, 82, of Mount Guyot St., died Saturday, May 12, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Varnum Funeral Home, 43 East Main St., West Brookfield, are incomplete.

Mary E. Kitchen, 81

WORCESTER -- Mary E. (Cleary) Kitchen, 81, formerly of 244 Belmont St., a retired dietary aide and a nightclub entertainer, died Saturday, May 12, in Clark Manor Nursing Home, Worcester, after a long illness.

She leaves a son, Rex A. Downer of Worcester; a brother, Edward Cleary of Worcester; two grandsons; four great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews. A son, John Kitchen, died in 1998. Her former husband, Stanley R. Kitchen, also predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Patrick and Mary (Sullivan) Cleary, and was raised in Shrewsbury before moving to Worcester many years ago. She graduated from Major Beal High School, Shrewsbury.

Mrs. Kitchen was a dietary aide for more than 10 years for Memorial Hospital before retiring. Previously, she was a nightclub entertainer, singing and entertaining at several area night spots. She sang with the Worcester Entertainment Club. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church. A funeral will be held Monday, May 14, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, 75 Alvarado Ave. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. A calling hour is 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, in the funeral home.

Lucile E. Laramee, 81

THOMPSON -- Lucile E. (Langlois) Laramee, 81, of 110 Main St., North Grosvenordale, died Thursday, May 10, in Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Webster, after a short illness.

She leaves her husband of 35 years, Lionel V. Laramee; two stepsons, Richard D. Laramee of Shrewsbury and Ronald P. Laramee of East Douglas; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline J. Williams of Millbury; and three brothers and eight sisters in Canada. She was born in Rimouski, Quebec, daughter of Alphonse and Josephine (L'eveque) Langlois, and moved to North Grosvenordale in 1966. She graduated from high school in Rimouski.

Mrs. Laramee was a homemaker.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 14, in St. Louis Church, 14 Lake St., Webster. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Webster. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., Webster, is directing arrangements.

Dr. Cyprus J. Paskevich

WORCESTER -- Dr. Cyprus J. “Steve” Paskevich, 82, of 8 South Flagg St., a World War II veteran and a retired physician, died Thursday, May 10, at home after an illness.

His wife, Clare M. (Early) Paskevich, died in 1985. He leaves a son, Peter A. Paskevich of Worcester; a brother, Michael Paskevich of the Buzzards Bay section of Bourne; a stepsister, Lillian Knight of Nashua, N.H.; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and his caregivers, James and June Rice of Worcester. He was born in Nashua, N.H., son of Cyprus and Michelina (Overka) Paskevich. He graduated from Clark University and earned a medical degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Dr. Paskevich was a physician and operated a practice on Millbury Street before retiring five years ago. He was the county physician for the Worcester County House of Corrections and worked for Worcester City Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital and Fairlawn Hospital. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Medical Association.

A funeral will be held Monday, May 14, from Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 9 Hammond St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 13, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial donations made to Glastonvery Abby, 16 Hull St., Hingham, MA 02043.

Rita L. Stets, 74

MILFORD -- Rita L. (Tosches) (Tomassini) Stets, 74, of 29 Claudette Drive, died Sunday, May 6, in her home.

She leaves her husband of 21 years, Morgan D. Stets. She leaves three sons, Peter Tomassini of Hull, Paul Tomassini of Virginia and Joseph Tomassini of Worcester; a step-son, Douglas Stets of Woonsocket, R.I.; a daughter, Linda Mantoni of Hopedale; four step-daughters, Bonnie Bolton of Woonsocket, Heidi Berkley of Whitinsville, Catrina Hannigan of Uxbridge; Eileen Dube of California; a brother, Angelo Tosches of Milford; three sisters, Lenora Perron of Woonsocket, Anna Delsignore of Milford and Rose Capprini of Georgetown; and four grandchildren. A brother, Joseph Tosches, and a sister, Carmela McGlynn, predeceased her. She was born in Milford, daughter of Nicholas and Benneditina (Iannaci) Tosches, and lived in Springfield, Hopedale and Mendon, before moving back to Milford in 1996. She was educated in Milford Schools.

Mrs. Stets worked for the Mars Manufacturing Company, Woonsocket, retiring in 1992. She was also a Home Health Aide for the VNA. She was a fashion model for the Senior Expos. She was also a seamstress, painter, cook and loved to dance. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, from the Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water St., followed by a Mass at 12:30 p.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 5 East Main St. Cremation will follow in the Rural Cemetery-Crematory, Worcester. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Pastoral Fund, PO Box 121, Hopedale MA 01747.

Mark A. Cummings, 33

NORTH BROOKFIELD -- The funeral for Mark A. Cummings, 33, of 24 Grove St., who died Monday, May 14, in North Brookfield, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the funeral home. Among his survivors is his fiancee, Karen Latwis of North Brookfield.

John M. Garreffi, 38

CLINTON -- John M. Garreffi, 38, of 208 Stone St., died Monday, May 14, at home.

He leaves a son, Jack M. Garreffi of Bolton; a brother, Thomas L. Garreffi of Clinton; his parents, Michael Garreffi of Clinton and Janet (Manning) Garreffi of Clinton; a close friend, Daneille Asttrelle of Clinton; many nieces and nephews. A brother, Michael J. Garreffi, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton and attended Clinton High School.

Mr. Garreffi owned and operated J.J. and M. Construction Co. for five years. He was previously a roofer.

The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, in St. John Cemetery, Lancaster. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jack M. Garreffi Trust Fund, c/o Clinton Savings Bank, 200 Church St., Clinton, MA 01510.

Lloyd S. Griswold, 92

MILFORD -- Lloyd S. Griswold, 92, of Claflin Street, a World War II veteran and former repair business operator, died Tuesday, May 15, in Blaire House of Milford.

His wife, Evelyn M. (Moore) Griswold, died in 1999. He leaves a son, Lloyd R. Griswold of Milford; a daughter, Lorraine B. Killburn of Milfrod; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He was born in Stoughton, son of Winfield S. and Annie (Ross) Griswold, and lived in Hopkinton before moving to Milford more than 80 years ago. He graduated from Milford High School in 1925. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Griswold was a loom erector more than 25 years at Draper Corp., Hopedale, retiring in 1974. He then operated a small engine repair business at his former home on Congress Street.He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church of Milford; a life member of Montgomery Lodge of Masons; and a member of Sgt. John W. Powers American Legion Post and the Greater Milford Church Bowling League.The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 18, in Pine Grove Cemetery, Dilla and Cedar streets. There are no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Hospital for Crippled Children, Burns Institute Boston Unit, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
