Charlotte Noonan, 85
WORCESTER -- Charlotte C. (Cordle) Noonan, 85, of 34 Holden St., died Sunday, July 29, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus after an illness.

Her husband, Joseph D. Noonan Jr., died in 1971. She leaves two sons, Joseph D. Noonan III, with whom she lived, and Charles H. Noonan of Barre; a daughter, Charlotte P. Noonan of Princeton; a sister, Jean Glace of Baltimore; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, William Cordle, predeceased her. She was born in Baltimore, daughter of Charles E. and Meta Katherine (Stein) Cordle, and grew up in Baltimore. She received a degree from the Institute of Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia, and moved to Worcester in the 1940s.

Mrs. Noonan was a Montessori teacher, and was headmistress of the Montessori school on Holden Street in Worcester for many years. She had operated the former Uncle Whiggley's Nursery School.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the North Worcester Aide Society, and the Montessori Association.

The funeral will be held at 11:30 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. Cremation will be in Rural Crematory. A calling hour will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the funeral home.

BERLIN -- William Olenik, 99, of 84 Summer Road, died Sunday, July 29, in Westridge Healthcare Center, Marlboro, after an illness. Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, is directing funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.

Ramah E. Roberts, 94

WORCESTER -- Ramah E. (Hubbard) Roberts, 94, of 271 East Mountain St., died Friday, July 27, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness.

Her husband, Arthur S. Roberts, died in 1980. She leaves two sons, Col. Arthur A. Roberts of Worcester and Richard S. Roberts of Hagerstown, Md. ; a daughter, Edith C. Roberts of Worcester; a brother, Richard A. Hubbard of Shrewsbury; a sister, Shirley H. Hammond of Seattle; three grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 22 nephews and nieces. A brother, Beverly M. Hubbard of Worcester, died 1995. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Elliott A. and Edith (Corey) Hubbard, and lived in Boylston. She graduated from North High School and the Worcester Normal School. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design.

Mrs. Roberts enjoyed classical literature, music, art and gardening.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland St., Holden. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., is directing arrangements.

DUDLEY -- Marion T. (Sparks) Schofield, 72, of 9A Chickering Road, died Saturday, July 28, in Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge.

She leaves her husband of 22 years, Chester A. Schofield of Dudley; two sons, Herbert A. Lunt Jr. of Chicopee and Carlton Fogg of Oxford; a daughter, Simone Bishop of Webster; four brothers, Edward and Wilfred Sparks, both of Westbrook, Maine, Harry Sparks of Gorham, Maine, and Joseph Sparks of Saco, Maine; a sister, Eva Eliott of Scarborough, Maine; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was born in Portland, Maine, daughter of Wilfred and Evelyn (Clark) Sparks, and in Webster before moving to Dudley 22 years ago.

Mrs. Schofield was a homemaker.

There are no funeral services or calling hours planned. Burial will be private in North Cemetery in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 40 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School St., Webster, is directing arrangements.

CLAREMONT, N. H. -- Caroline E. Scribner, 92, of Claremont, formerly of Auburn, Mass., and Worcester, Mass., died Saturday, July 28, at her daughter's home on Winter Street.

Her husband, Cecil E. Scribner Sr., died in 1971. She leaves a son, Cecil E. Scribner Jr. of Shrewsbury, Mass. ; two daughters, Norma M. and Caroline E. Plourde, both of Claremont; two brothers, Melvin and Harold Supernor, both of Worcester; two sisters, Elizabeth LaMarche and Pearl Fanning, both of Worcester; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Victor V. and Emily (Deviou) Supernor, and lived 45 years in Auburn and six years in Claremont.

Mrs. Scribner enjoyed knitting, cooking, and gardening.

The graveside service will be in Hope Cemetery in Worcester at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to Connecticut Valley Home Care/Hospice, 958 John Stark Highway, Newport, NH 03773-2609. There are no calling hours. Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St., is directing arrangements.

Selma R. Sherman, 89
AUBURN -- Selma R. “Sally” (Morrison) Sherman, 89, 11 Willis St., a retired secretary, died Sunday, July 29, in the Life Care Center of Auburn after a short illness.

Her husband of 66 years, Ernest Sherman Sr., died in 1997. She leaves two sons, Gerald Sherman of Cherry Valley and Ernest Sherman Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla. ; five grandchildren, including her caregiver, Cherylann Knapton of Spencer; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was born in Upton, daughter of William J. and Lora Morrison, and lived many years in Auburn.

Mrs. Sherman was a secretary for the Worcester Arena for 16 years, retiring in 1977. She was honored as “Secretary of the Year” in 1968.

She was a longtime member of the Pleasant Street Baptist Church, Worcester, and Pakachoag Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Order of the Rainbow and was awarded the Grand Cross of Color. She was also member of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, and gave slide show presentations of the bridges at nursing homes, and civic and church groups.

The funeral will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the funeral home. Members of Pakachoag Chapter, Order of Eastern Star will gather at the funeral home for a ritual at 7:30 p. m. during the calling hours.

HOPKINTON -- Ruth V. (Ferguson) Small, 82, of Hopkinton, formerly of Worcester, died Saturday, July 28, at home.

Her husband of 37 years, Samuel N. Small, died in 1978. She leaves two sons, Steven Small of Florida and Richard Small of Worcester; three daughters, Susan Small of Hopkinton, Elizabeth Olofson of Waltham, and Jean White of Worcester; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. She was born in Worcester, daughter of George and Amy (Dean) Ferguson, and moved to Hopkinton in 1953.

Mrs. Small was active with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and volunteered at the Hopkinton Library and the Friends of the Seniors Thrift Shop. She read for the blind, and worked for Sunnyside Gardens.

The funeral will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Wood Street. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Chesmore Funeral Home, 57 Hayden Rowe St. Donations may be made to a charity.

Henry J. Swydan, 74

Henry J. Swydan, 74
WORCESTER -- Henry J. Swydan, 74, of 19 Birmingham Road, a World War II veteran and a retired engineer, died Saturday, July 28, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness.

His wife, Marguerite (Nimee) Swydan, predeceased him. He leaves four sisters, Hind-Helene Abusamra and Anne Swydan, both of Worcester, Gloria Samara of Waterford, Mich., and Dorothy S. Carlson of Bourne; nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Vladimir S., Herbert S., Andrew and Albert S. Swydan, and a sister, Louise Bargoot, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Shokri K. and Hafeeza (Kouri) Swydan. He graduated from North High School and from Bridgeport (Conn. ) University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.

Mr. Swydan was an engineer with Riley-Stoker Co., retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral, its Men's Club and the Knights of St. George, and was past superintendent of the Sunday school.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. A calling period is 10:30 to 11 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vladimir S. Swydan Scholarship Fund, 7 Tavern St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545. Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., is directing arrangements.

Richard J. Wassenar

Richard J. Wassenar
WINDSOR, Conn. -- Richard J. Wassenar, 65, of South Windsor, formerly of Northbridge, Mass., died Saturday, July 28, in Yale-New Haven Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Anna (Brouwer) Wassenar; a son, Dale Wassenar of Manchester; two daughters, Christine Le of Willow Grove, Pa., and Lisa Sanborn of South Windsor; two brothers, Robert Wassenar of Westchester, Ill., and Philip Wassener of Uxbridge, Mass. ; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Northbridge, son of Jacob and Dora (Cnossen) Wassenar, and graduated from Uxbridge High School in Uxbridge. He received an associate's degree from the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He was an Army veteran. He moved to South Windsor 35 years ago.

Mr. Wassenar worked at Automation Inc. in West Hartford.

He was a member of Avery Street Christian Reform Church and its Church Council. He was also on the building committee, and sang in the choir. He was an amateur photographer, scale model enthusiast, and Civil War buff.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Avery Street Christian Reform Church, 661 Avery St., South Windsor. Burial will be in Wapping Cemetery in South Windsor. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p. m. Tuesday, July 31, in Samsel and Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. Donations may be made to the New England Civil War Museum-Alden Skinner Camp 45, PO Box 153, Rockville, CT 06066 or the Avery Street Christian Reform Church, 661 Avery St., South Windsor, CT 06074.

SHREWSBURY -- John J. Czerniak, 14, of Pond View Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 2, in his home after a long illness.

He leaves his parents, Richard and Barbara Czerniak of Shrewsbury; and a sister, Suzanne Czerniak of Shrewsbury. He was born in Schenectady, N. Y. and attended Shrewsbury Middle School where he was part of the Eight Red Group. He enjoyed Boy Scouts, karate, and basketball.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a. m., Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the First Unitarian Church of Worcester, 90 Main St. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic and Research Fund, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA, 02115 or to the American Diabetes Association, 1 Bromfield St., Boston, MA, 02108. WEST SAND LAKE, N. Y. -- Jennifer A. Romanelli, 18, of Route 150, died Saturday, Aug. 4., in East Greenbush.

She leaves her parents; three brothers; her grandfather; a nephew and a niece.

Miss Romanellli had just completed her freshman year at WPI.

The funeral service will be held at 9 a. m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, West Sand Lake. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p. m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the DeGraaf-Bryce Funeral Home, Route 150, West Sand Lake. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Friends, Routes 157 and 443, East Berne, N. Y. 12059.
