Charles E. Farrell, 88

Hyannis - Charles E. Farrell, 88, died Sunday, June 28, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Margaret (Moffatt) Farrell.

Born in Liverpool, England, Mr. Farrell came to Fall River at age 14. He started as a messenger for Western Union in Fall River, then became a bookkeeper, then office manager. He worked in Haverhill, Methuen and Attleboro before coming to Hyannis in the mid-1950s. He retired in 1970.

After his retirement, he worked as a bookkeeper for Baxter Transportation in Hyannis.

Mr. Farrell was a member and past exalted ruler of the Hyannis Lodge of Elks No. 1549, where he also served as secretary for many years and was active in bingo. He was a member and past president of the British-American Club of Cape Cod, a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Surviving besides his wife are a sister, Mary Davis of Dallas, Ore.; and two nieces.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Cape Cod, 895 Mary Dunn Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Andrew J. Fortes, 72

New Bedford - Andrew J. Fortes, 72, who leaves a sister in Hyannis, died Monday, June 29, 1998 at New England Medical Center in Boston, from heart failure.

He was the husband of the late Joaqina (Anicleto) Fortes.

Born in Harwich, he was raised and educated in Boston. He graduated from Perkins Institute for the Blind in 1949. He worked for Simmons Industry, which moved from Boston to Stoughton, as an assembler for more than 32 years, retiring in 1986.

In 1970, after Simmons moved to Stoughton, Mr. Fortes moved to Brockton, where he remained until moving to New Bedford two years ago.

Surviving are a brother, Julio Fortes of New Bedford; three sisters, Eugenia Fortes of Hyannis, Julia Owens of Prarie View, Texas , and Marion Cutts of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church, West Harwich. Burial followed in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Walter A. Godfrey, 81

Marstons Mills - Walter A. Godfrey, 81, a Marstons Mills resident, died Friday, June 26, 1998 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

He was the husband of Lorraine (Andrews) Godfrey.

Mr. Godfrey was born and educated in Arlington. He lived there until moving to Marstons Mills in 1978. Her served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Godfrey worked for General Electric in Medford for more than 30 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Wood Carvers Association of Cape Cod.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Louise Marasco of Lynn and Virginia Weidaw of Maunee, Ohio; and Garth R. Barbara and Meredith Nelson, all of Hanover.

Funeral services and burial were private. Memorial donations may be made to Marstons Mills Public Library, Main Street, Marstons Mills, 02648.

W. Dana Holmes, 90

Barnstable - W. Dana Holmes, 90, a retired postmaster, died Thursday, June 25, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Eleanor B. (Batson) Holmes.

Born, raised and educated in Barnstable, Mr. Holmes was also a graduate of Wentworth Institute. In 1936, he was a member and the assistant chief of the first Barnstable Fire Department. Mr. Holmes became postmaster of Barnstable in 1942 and retired from the postal service in 1973.

He was a longtime member of the Unitarian Church in Barnstable.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Harriette Biarrio of Watertown; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. July 3, 1998 in Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville. Memorial donations may be made to the Barnstable Rescue Squad, Route 6A, Barnstable, MA 02630; or a charity of one's choice.

Judith "Judy" (McAuliffe) Owen, 46

Barnstable - Judith "Judy" (McAuliffe) Owen, 46, formerly of Clinton, died unexpectedly Monday, June 29, 1998 at her home in Barnstable.

She was the wife of John P. Owen and daughter of Timothy and Mary (Kittredge) McAuliffe of Hyannis.

Mrs. Owen was born and raised in Clinton and was a graduate of Holy Family High School in Fitchburg. She was a resident of Barnstable for more than 10 years.

Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by two daughters, Sarah Colombo of Hyannis and Katelyn Owen of Barnstable; two sisters, Ann Allen of Marstons Mills and Ellen McAuliffe of Hyannis; a brother, Timothy McAuliffe Jr. of Hyannisport; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial was held in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville. Memorial donations may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 1425 Thompson Ave., Cedar Grove, NJ 07009-1000.

Ralph M. Pitcher, 80

Barnstable - Ralph Maxwell Pitcher, 80, a retired union carpenter, died Monday, June 29, 1998 at his home in Barnstable after a long illness.

He was the husband of Mary Priscilla (Attwood) Pitcher for more than 50 years.

Born and educated in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, he moved to Toronto in 1944 and Boston in 1959. He retired to Barnstable in 1982.

Mr. Pitcher was a union carpenter in Canada and in the Boston area until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Cape Cod Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osterville.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Edmund Pitcher of East Orleans, David Pitcher of Beverly and Donald Pitcher of Cummaquid; a daughter, Barbara Patt of Calgary; two brothers, Frederick L. Pitcher of Beverly and Eric Pitcher of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada; two sisters, Doris Rendell and Florence Pitcher, both of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at Cape Cod Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osterville.

Alice F. Williams, 75

Centerville - Alice F. (Frantz) Williams, 75, died unexpectedly June 6, 1998, at her home in Centerville.

She was the wife of the late Jonathan B. Williams.

Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Glensdale, Pa., and attended local schools there. She graduated from Hood College with a bachelor's degree in 1944 and from Simmons College, where she earned a master's degree in retailing and business. A resident of Montclair, N.J., she had a career in retailing and merchandising with Strawbridge & Clothier for more that 34 years. She moved to Centerville in 1985.

While living in Centerville, she worked as a tour guide for local touring companies, which included Fargo Tours and Heritage Tours. She was a member of AAUW; Centerville Historical Society; New Comers Club; Barnstable Investment Club; Federated Church of Hyannis and many bridge clubs.

She is survived by four nieces, a nephew and a cousin.

A graveside service was held in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, 712 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Evelyn Amerilpan, 78

Marstons Mills - Evelyn M. (Gutjahr) Amerigian, 78, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Albert Amerigian.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., she moved to Marstons Mills 12 years ago from Aurora, Colo.

She was a member of West Parish Congregational Church and the Women's Guild.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Craig Amerigian of Jamestown, R.I.; a daughter, Janelle Amerigian Hammond of Brewster; a sister, Mildred Palmer of Cummings, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at the West Parish Cougregational Church, West Barnstable.

Memorial donations may be made to West Parish Family School Building Fund, Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Beverly A. Bucko, 63

Centerville - Beverly A. (Minsky) Bucko, 63, a former school bus driver and tour guide, died Thursday, July 2, 1998 at her home after a long illness.

She was the wife of Joseph Bucko.

Born in Long Beach, N.Y., she graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River. She lived in Rhode Island for many years.

After graduating from the Ward School of Airline Training in Worcester, she worked for National Airlines in New York City.

She moved to Cape Cod in 1959 shortly after her marriage.

She drove a school bus for the Barnstable school system, mostly the middle school routes. For the last 15 years, she worked for Cape Cod Custom Tours, a division of Hy-Line, as a tour guide on Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, the Hy-Line boats and in Boston and Newport, R.I.

She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

A lover of classical music, she sang with the church's adult choir and folk groups and with the original Cape Chorus, the Cape Cod Conservatory Summer Chorale, the West Parish Oratorio Chorale, the Chatham Chorale and the Victrola Society.

She enjoyed flower gardening and camping with her husband in New Hampshire and Maine.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Deborah Gregoire and Jennifer Vincent, both of Hyanuis; three sons, Michael Bucko, Patrick Bucko and Thomas Bucko, all of Centerville; two sisters, Carole Barboza of Portsmouth, R.I., and Diana Richardson of Middletown, RI; and a granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial followed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 572 Main St., West Yarmouth, MA 02673.
