FITCHBURG -- Vera (Hill) Skidmore, 84, of 209 Westminster St., died Wednesday, July 25, at HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital

Her husband of 35 years, George J. Skidmore, died in 1973. She leaves a son, George J. Skidmore Jr. of Southbury, Conn. ; a daughter, Carol A. Thibault of Fitchburg; a sister, Dorothy L. McInnes of Fitchburg; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Frank, William Leroy and Lawrence Hill; and two sisters, Marion Norman and Caroline Marshall, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Frank W. and Fannie A. (Gard) Hill.

Mrs. Skidmore was a member of West Fitchburg Methodist Church and attended the Templeton Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 30, in the Bosk Funeral Home, 85 Blossom St. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. July 29, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Kenneth W. Shiatte, 69

Kenneth W. Shiatte, 69
GLENMONT, N. Y. -- Kenneth W. Shiatte, 69, of Glenmont, formerly of Webster and Oxford, Mass., a retired transportation department worker, died Sunday, July 22, while vacationing in the Adirondack mountains.

He leaves his wife, Norma (Jewell) Shiatte; a daughter, Jane Fisher of Delmar; and two grandchildren. A son, Wayne Shiatte, predeceased him. He was born in Laconia, N. H., son of Chester and Doris Shiatte, and was raised in Oxford. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from WPI, Worcester, and a Bureau of Highway Traffic Certificate from Yale University.

Mr. Shiatte worked for the New York State Department of Transportation, where he was assistant commissioner for engineering and chief, retiring in 1998. He started working for the California Division of Highways in 1953 and then spent two years with the Army Corps of Engineers and then two years as a traffic consultant before joining NYSDOT in 1962. He enjoyed hiking.

The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, in Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 26, in Mount Zion Cemetery, Webster. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to Wayne Shiatte Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o WPI, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609.

Dr. Kenneth Senter, 80

Dr. Kenneth Senter, 80
PLYMOUTH -- Dr. Kenneth A. Senter, 80, of Plymouth, formerly of Worcester, Holden and North Brookfield, a retired dentist and veteran of World War II, died Saturday, July 21, in Life Care Center.

He leaves his wife, Jean W. (Tonseth) Senter; a son, Kenneth A. Senter Jr. of North Brookfield; three daughters, Dianne Lockwood and Debra J. Senter, both of Plymouth, and Gayle P. Senter of Holden; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A son, Bradley W. Senter, predeceased him. He was born in Allston, son of Everett and Grace P. (Wells) Senter, and graduated from Clark University and the University of Buffalo School of Dentistry. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Before moving to Plymouth, he lived in Worcester, Holden and North Brookfield.

Dr. Senter practiced dentistry in Worcester from 1947 to 1986.

He was a past member of the Worcester Kiwanis Club, was a master mason in the Athelstan Lodge, Worcester, and belonged to the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Worcester District Dental Society.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, in Christ Church, 149 Court St. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, in the Grove Cemetery, Holden. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02301. Richard Davis Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Cardinal Sensi, 94, Vatican diplomat
VATICAN CITY -- Cardinal Francesco Maria Sensi, who served as a Vatican diplomat for many years, died yesterday, the Vatican said. He was 94.

Sensi died in a Rome clinic, said L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican paper.

With Sensi's death, the number of cardinals goes down to 179.

Ordained in 1929, Sensi served as a Vatican diplomat in Costa Rica, Ireland, Portugal and the Middle East. In 1976, he was elevated to cardinal.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow in Sensi's hometown, Cosenza, in southern Italy.

Edward Sealey Jr., 60

WEBSTER -- Edward E. Sealey Jr., 60, of 83 Lake St., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, at home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 39 years, Marilyn L. (Willey) Sealey; three sons, Edward E. Sealey III of Lakeland, Fla., James R. Sealey of Worcester, and Thomas M. Sealey of Boylston; a daughter, Kathleen M. Sealey-Murphy of Webster; his father, Edward E. Sealey Sr., of Bridgton, Maine; four brothers, Robert Sealey of Springhill, Fla., George Sealey of Shrewsbury, Frederick Sealey of Nashville, Tenn., and Michael Sealey of St. Petersburg, Fla. ; a sister, Lorraine Ferrantino of Mashpee; 10 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Cheryl A. Barry of Westboro, died in 1991. He was born in Framingham, son of Pauline E. (Neas) Sealey, and was raised in Worcester. He lived 22 years in Northboro. He lived 15 years in Springhill before moving to Webster in 1995. He graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester in 1958. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving on an aircraft carrier.

Mr. Sealey was a truck driver for Holmes Transportation Co. in Framingham for 20 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Basilica and the Teamsters Local 170 union in Worcester. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Northboro.

The funeral will be held Friday, Aug. 10, from Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Cremation will be in Rural Crematory in Worcester. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to Harrington Home Care and Hospice, 61 Pine St., Southbridge, MA 01550 or St. Joseph School Immediate Needs Fund, 53 Whitcomb St., Webster, MA 01570.

WEBSTER -- Rose A. (Jolda) Tycz, 87, of 948 School St., died Friday, July 20, in Hubbard Regional Hospital, after being stricken ill at home.

Her husband of 48 years, Stephen A. Tycz, died in 1985. She leaves three sons, Bernard R. Tycz of Thompson, Daniel R. Tycz, with whom she lived, and Thomas S. Tycz of Falls Church, Va. ; four grandsons; nephews and nieces; grandnephews and grandnieces. A daughter, Esther Tycz, died in 1942. Two brothers, Michael Jolda of Vancouver, B. C., and Thaddeus Jolda of Seattle, predeceased her. She was born in Webster, daughter of Michael and Antonia (Magiera) Jolda, and attended Bartlett High School.

Mrs. Tycz was a stitcher at several area shoe companies, including Sandlerette, Bentley Shoe Co., and B & W Footwear. She retired in 1975.

She was a member of St. Joseph Basilica, its Holy Rosary Sodality, and its Sacred Heart and St. Anne societies. She was a member of the Webster Senior Center and the Silver Dippers. She enjoyed polka dancing and crocheting.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 24, from Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Walter Trojanowski, 86

WEBSTER -- Walter S. “Archie” Trojanowski, 86, of 45 Upland Ave., died Sunday, July 22, in Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Josephine (Piechota) Trojanowski; two daughters, Natalie A. Ostrokolowicz of Charlton and Eleanor M. Brezniak of Webster; a sister, Mary Trojanowski of Webster; two grandchildren. Three brothers and a sister predeceased him. He was born in Webster, son of Stefan and Slontyna (Jekot) Trojanowski, and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central Europe.

He was a dyer 35 years at Anglo Fabrics Co., retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Joseph Basilica.

He had a large vegetable garden, and enjoyed polka dancing.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, July 25, from Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, in the funeral home. Hubert Valentine

BROOKLYN, N. Y. -- Hubert Valentine, of 191 73rd St., formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Sunday, July 22, in Augustina Lutheran Home.

His wife of 49 years, Kathryn U. Valentine, died in 1996. He leaves two sisters, Nancy Kennerly of Manchester, England, and Mary Stewart of Dublin, Ireland; five nephews and a niece. He was born in Dublin, son of Hugh and Margaret (Kearns) Valentine, and lived several years in Worcester before moving to Brooklyn 55 years ago. He graduated from high school in Ireland. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Valentine was a professional singer. He sang with the Boston Pops in the 1960s, and with the Philadelphia Opera Company. He also sang benefits for the Columban Fathers of Massachusetts after World War II. He retired in 1975.

The funeral will be held Thursday, July 26, from Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. A calling hour will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers.

ANNA MARIA, Fla. -- Laura Ann (Mangini) Van Winkle, 43, of Anna Maria, formerly of Leominster, Mass., died Wednesday, July 25, in Hospice House of Bradenton.

She leaves her husband, Brent M. Van Winkle; her father and stepmother, Nazarene and Antoinette Mangini of Bradenton; two sisters, Donata Cocks of Port Charlotte and Marisa Mangini of Leominster; and two nephews. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Mary E. (Cormier) Mangini, and moved to Manatee County in 1978.

Mrs. Van Winkle owned Head Quarters Salon, Holmes Beach, where she was a stylist. She was a member and eucharistic minister of St. Bernard Church, Holmes Beach. She enjoyed photography.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, in St. Bernard Church, 248 South Harbor Drive, Holmes Beach. Burial will be in Palma Sola Cemetery, Bradenton. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 27, in Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Holmes Beach Chapel, 6000 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach. A vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. during the calling hours. OXFORD -- Robert E. Wunsch, 59, of 36 Holly St., a custodian, died Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

He leaves his father, Earl Wunsch of Lowell; a son, Robert E. Wunsch of Leicester; two daughters, Trish Jedrzynski and Dawn Grist, both of Merrimack, N. H. ; a brother, Edward F. Wunsch of Webster; five sisters, Irene Comtois of Danielson, Conn., Kristine Wunsch, Heidi Gagnon and Robin Brown, all of Lowell, and Melanie Furrer of Spring Valley, Calif. ; and several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Rowena (Rogers) Wunsch and lived in Oxford for 35 years.

Mr. Wunsch was a custodian for Temple Emanuel in Worcester. He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran, having served during peacetime. He was a member of the Masons.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the United Church of Christ, 4 Church St. Webster. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A calling hour will be held from 9 to 10 a. m., Monday, Aug. 6 in the church. NORTH ANDOVER -- Alice H. (Higginbottom) Wenzel, 96, of Washington Park in Andover, formerly of North Andover and Uxbridge, died Thursday, Aug. 2, in Lawrence General Hospital.

Her husband, Paul J. Wenzel, predeceased her. She leaves three daughters, Betty Jane Dawe of North Andover, Barbara Boucher of Avon, Conn., and Paula Stewart of Newburyport; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Denton, Lancashire, England, son of John and Ellen L. (Owen) Higginbottom, and came to the United States at age 4. She lived in Methuen, where she graduated from Searles High School.

In Methuen, Mrs. Wenzel was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and its Girls Friendly Society. She was a member of North Andover Women's Club and a founding member of Uxbridge Women's Club. During World War II, she was a plane spotter and volunteered at Cushing Hospital, Framingham. She also volunteered at Lawrence General Hospital, with patients and in the thrift shop, and was recognized for more than 7,000 hours of service. She collected antiques and doll houses and was a soloist and artist, whose oil paintings appeared at several private exhibits.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 90 Broadway, Methuen. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 90 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844. Dewhirst and Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., is directing arrangements.
