CHESHIRE, Conn. -- Janet A. (Athy) Schuemarker, 76, of 745 Highland Ave., formerly of Shrewsbury, Mass., a retired claims examiner, died Sunday, July 22, in Cheshire Convalescent Center.

She leaves her husband of 54 years, Howard J. Schuemarker; three daughters, Nancy A. Rossi of Wolcott, Sally A. Gaiss of Plantsville, and Carol E. Chamberlin of Cheshire; a sister, Elizabeth A. Peterson of Harwich Port, Mass. ; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A sister, Mary A. O'Brien of Dunmore, Pa., died June 25. She was born in Worcester, Mass., daughter of Anthony H. A. and Anna L. (O'Reilly) Athy, and lived several years in Shrewsbury before moving to Cheshire in 1955. She attended Classical High School, Worcester, and graduated from Newton Country Day School, Newton, and Barry College, now Barry University, in Miami.

Mrs. Schuemarker was a claims examiner with the Connecticut Department of Labor before retiring. She was a member of St. Bridget Church. She enjoyed music.

The memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, in St. Bridget Church, 175 Main St. Burial will be private in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, PO Box 1004, Meriden, CT 06450; or to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 705 North Mountain Road, Newington, CT 06111. Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Alfred S. Travinski, 79
SOUTHBRIDGE -- Alfred S. Travinski, 79, of 351 Dudley River Road, died Friday, Aug. 3, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of nine years, Bertha (Zarycki) Kurposka Travinski; a son, David P. Travinski of Southbridge; a daughter, former State Representative Marilyn L. Travinski of Southbridge; four sisters, Helen Sterzala of Union, Conn., Irene Ethier of Sturbridge, Regina Gajewski of Southbridge, and Theresa Wallace of Brandenton, Fla. ; a stepson, James Kurposka of Voorheesville, N. Y. ; a stepdaughter, Jane Janeczek of Marlboro; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. His first wife, Stella R. (Lempicki) Travinski died in 1979. A brother, Joseph S. Travinski and two sisters, Jalina Postemski and Mary Travinski, predeceased him. He was born in Southbridge, son of Benjamin and Clara (Piekarski) Travinski and lived here all his life. He graduated from the former Cole Trade High School and attended engineering and management courses at different local area colleges.

Mr. Travinski worked for 47 years at Russell Harrington Co. Cutlery in Southbridge, retiring in 1984 as the Manager of Plant Engineering and New Machinery Development. He was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific.

He was a member of St. Hedwig's Church and its St. Stanislaw Society, the Polish American Veterans, the Pilsudski Polish American Club, the Industry Management Club, the North American Hunting Club, and the National Riffle Association.

The funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 6, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Hedwig's Church, Everett St. Burial will be in St. Hedwig's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m., Sunday, Aug. 5, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Hedwig's Parish Renovation Fund, 29 Summer St., Southbridge, MA, 01550 or to Tri Valley Elder Services, 251 Main St., Webster, MA, 01570.

HOLLIS, N. H. -- Asta G. (Backe) Tolstrup, 84, of 89 Wheeler Road, died Friday, July 20, at her home.

She leaves her husband of 60 years, Richard W. Tolstrup; a son; a daughter, Susan Tolstrup of Westminster, Mass. ; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was born in Raa, Sweden.

Mrs. Tolstrup was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hollis Women's Club, the Garden Club and the Hollis Seniors. She volunteered at the library, and enjoyed painting.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, in Congregational Church of Hollis, Monument Square. Burial will be in East Cemetery. A calling period is 10 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301; or to Home Health and Hospice Care, 22 Prospect St., Nashua, NH 03060. Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St., Nashua, is directing arrangements.

BERLIN, Germany -- Diana Marie (Garrison) Theerman, 47, of Berlin, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Friday, July 20, in Vierchow Klinikum.

She leaves her husband, the Rev. Hans W. Theerman; a daughter, Katherine M. Theerman of Berlin; two sons, Matthew M. and Ryan W. Theerman, both of Berlin; her father, Robert R. Garrison of Quincy, Mass. ; two sisters, Pamela J. Knudson of Hingham, Mass., and Kathi L. Garrison of Quincy; nephews and nieces. She was born in Portsmouth, N. H., daughter of Katherine M. (Prozy) Garrison, and was raised in South and North Dakota. She lived in Worcester before moving to Berlin eight years ago. She graduated from Trinity Bible Institute in Ellendale, N. D.

Mrs. Theerman was a homemaker. She was director of the Berlin Christian women's organization and the Berlin Missionettes. She enjoyed playing the piano.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in First Assembly of God Church, 30 Tyler-Prentice Road, Worcester. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hingham. There are no calling hours. Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St., Hingham, is directing arrangements.

Russell J. Talbot, 67
WORCESTER -- Russell J. Talbot, 67, of 20 Onset St., died Friday, Aug. 3, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 43 years, Virginia (Brownson) Talbot; four daughters, Marie Hebert and Tammy Talbot, both of Worcester, Tina Tetreault of Webster and Toni Sullivan of Auburn; seven grandchildren. A sister, Elizabeth Grover of Groton, died in 1993. He was born in Holden, son of Lila Talbot.

Mr. Talbot worked for EMC Corp. in Hopkinton and Smithvale Corp. in Westboro.

He was a member of the Auburn Elks. He enjoyed fishing.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in Graham, Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery in Holden. Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the funeral home.

Gertrude Takala, 90

RUTLAND -- Gertrude (Baier) Takala, 90, of Kenwood Drive, died Tuesday, July 24, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after a brief illness.

Her husband of 38 years, John R. Takala, died in 1975. She leaves a son, Ralph J. Takala of Suffield, Conn. ; a daughter, Barbara L. McNeil of Callawassie Island, S. C. ; two sisters, Flora Whittier of Sutton and Irene Javery of Detroit; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Alice Tuomivaara of Paxton, who was her caregiver. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Henry and Sandra (Karvonen) Baier, and lived in Rutland for 61 years. She graduated from Clinton High School, and attended Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Worcester.

Mrs. Takala worked for the Rutland school system. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Rutland, its Monday Night Club, the Tuesday Night Club of Rutland, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Cradle Rock Chapter, for 50 years. She enjoyed reading, gardening and baking.

No funeral service is planned. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Rural Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Rutland, PO Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, is directing arrangements.

WORCESTER -- Andrew P. Szpakowski, 41, of 6 Whitney St., a custodian, died Wednesday, July 25, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after being stricken ill.

He leaves a son, Christopher Szpakowski of Worcester; a daughter, Elzbieta Szpakowski of Worcester; his mother, Anna (Galanek) Szpakowski of Worcester; and a sister, Elzbieta Szymanski of Worcester. He was born in Warsaw, Poland, son of Walter Szpakowski, and came to Worcester in 1976. He graduated from North High School.

Mr. Szpakowski was a custodian at St. Mary's School. He previously worked at Table Talk Pie Co. and the College of the Holy Cross. He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish.

A funeral will be held Monday, July 30, from Henry Funeral Home, 33 Ward St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 29, in the funeral home.

WORCESTER -- Dorothea A. (Phillips) Stultz, 85, of Worcester, a business co-owner, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness.

Her husband, Ronald O. Stultz Sr., died in 1989. She leaves a son, Ronald O. Stultz Jr. of Worcester; two daughters, Dorothea A. Shugrue of Worcester and Nancy A. Young of Sturbridge; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a nephew. A sister, Eleanor Nowick, predeceased her. She was born in Calais, Maine, and lived many years in Worcester.

Mrs. Stultz co-owned Ronnie's Auto Body. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or donations made to Friendly House Inc., 36 Wall St., Worcester, MA 01604.

Lloyd C. Steinbring, 83

Lloyd C. Steinbring, 83
FITCHBURG -- Lloyd C. Steinbring, 83, formerly of 74 Ward St., U. S. Army career veteran, died Tuesday, July 31, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, after he was stricken ill at Birchwood Care Center earlier that day.

His wife of 38 years, Evelyn L. (Marion) Steinbring, died in 1990. He leaves three sons, Michael J. Steinbring, of New Jersey, David L. Steinbring of Fitchburg, and Lloyd C. Steinbring Jr. in Aukland, New Zealand; two daughters, Virginia M. Guertin of Fitchburg and Gail Steinbring of Shelburne Falls; two sisters, Mabel Huss of Elk River, Minn. and Henrietta George, of Duluth, Minn; eight grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; nephews and nieces. A son, Scott D. Steinberg, died in 1995.

He was born in Nashua, Minn,. son of Ludwig and Orol (Whitmore) Steinbring, and lived in Fitchburg for most of his life. He graduated from Morris High School, Tintah, Minn. He was a Army veteran of World War II. In Auckland, New Zealand, he was a military police escort for Eleanor Roosevelt. He served as a military policeman until retiring in 1960 as a master sergeant.

Mr. Steinbring was a career serviceman for 20 years. He enjoyed listening to music, playing cards and all aspects of veterans' affairs, including visiting veterans in nursing home. He and his wife were active in the local peace and anti-nuclear movements of the 1970's and 1980's.

The funeral, with full military honors, will be held Monday, Aug. 6, from the Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., with a Mass at 9:30 a. m in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 59 Vernon St. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, in the funeral home.

Frank A. Statkus, 85

Frank A. Statkus, 85
WORCESTER -- Frank A. Statkus, 85, formerly of 33 Jefferson St., a retired truck driver, died Thursday, July 26, in Providence Extended Care Center.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Barbara J. (Yuris) Statkus; two sons, Frank P. Statkus of Shrewsbury and Robert J. Statkus of Leicester; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in North Easton, son of Frank and Casimira (Stulpenas) Statkus, and lived most of his life in Worcester. He graduated from Classical High School, where he participated in indoor and outdoor track and served as captain of the football team, and attended Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. He was selected to the Allstar All City Football Scholastic team in 1935.

Mr. Statkus was a truck driver more than 20 years for Colonial Warehouse and Supply Co., retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Casimir's Church, Greendale Retired Men's Club, Teamsters Union Local 170 and its retiree group. He played semiprofessional football with the Worcester Pros in 1937.

The funeral will be held Saturday, July 28, from Dirsa-Kazlauskas Funeral Home, 51 Providence St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Casimir's Church, 41 Providence St. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum. A calling hour is 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Casimir's Church Building Fund, 41 Providence St., Worcester, MA 01604.

Edmund A. Soldi, 78
CLINTON -- Edmund A. Soldi, 78, of 5 Beacon St., a World War II veteran and a retired linotype operator, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Clinton Hospital after a long illness.

He leaves a brother, James Soldi of Clinton; two sisters, Stella Gentile and Rose Turmaine, both of Clinton; nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces. He was born in Clinton, son of Frank and Emily (Cella) Soldi. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1940 and attended Clark University, Worcester. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.

Mr. Soldi was a linotype operator at Colonial Press for many years, retiring when it closed in 1977. He was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist Church and a member of Clinton Post Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The funeral will be held Friday, Aug. 3, from Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in the funeral home.
