Sister Xavier Mansfield

WORCESTER -- Sister Xavier Mansfield, 92, of the Sisters of Notre Dame., died Saturday, Nov. 10, in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, 559 Plantation St.
She leaves several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Catherine Capella and Agnes Mansfield, and five brothers, Edward, John, Joseph, Matthew and Francis Mansfield, predeceased her. She was born Ellen A. Mansfield in Hudson, daughter of Thomas and Bridget Agnes (Clark) Mansfield. She lived many years in Ipswich before moving recently to Worcester. She received a bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1929.
Sister Xavier was a music teacher for more than 40 years at Notre Dame schools in the Boston area. She also taught several years at Julie Country Day School in Leominster.
A funeral Mass will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, 340 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01604. Athy Memorial Home, 11 Lancaster St., is directing arrangements.
Margaret K. Marcy, 75

WESTBORO -- Margaret K. (Cederlund) Marcy, 75, of 11 Fairview Road, died Thursday, Nov. 8, in Marlboro Hospital, after a long illness.
She leaves two sons, Michael J. Marcy of Shrewsbury and Matthew P. Marcy of Westboro; a brother, Edmund Cederlund in France; a sister, Sandra Brodeur in South Carolina; two grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A brother, John Cederlund, and a sister, Dorothy Whelan, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Oscar and Ann (Ashman) Cederlund. She graduated from Westboro High School in 1944, and from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester. She lived in Westboro for 69 years.
Mrs. Marcy was a registered nurse at Marlboro Hospital for more than 35 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of St. Luke the Evangelist Church, and enjoyed needlepoint and making afghans.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in Rand-Harper-Pickering Westboro Funeral Home, 62 West Main St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity.
John T. Martin, 73

WORCESTER -- John T. "Teddy" Martin, 73, of 9 Fox Meadow Drive, formerly of Gates Lane, a retired machinist, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Life Care Center of Auburn after an illness.
His wife, Kathleen P. (Swaine) Martin, died in 1998. He leaves a son, John C. Martin of Shrewsbury; a daughter, Marilyn Murzycki of Worcester; two sisters, Mary Ellis of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Audrey Stinson of Fort Mills, S.C.; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, Granger Martin, predeceased him. He was born in Sydney, son of Margaret Martin, and lived in North Carolina before moving to Worcester in 1960.
Mr. Martin was a machinist at Reed & Prince Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church.
The funeral will be held Friday, Nov. 16, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the funeral home. Anthony Martinelli, 78

WORCESTER -- Anthony P. Martinelli, 78, of 50 Shrewsbury St., formerly of 4 East Shelby St., a retired cemetery employee, died Sunday, Nov. 11, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.
He leaves two brothers, Carmen J. Martinelli of Millbury and Michael J. Martinelli of Worcester; three sisters, Yolanda R. Jette of Palmyra, Maine, and Catherine R. Duca and Philomena Poulin, both of Worcester; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Ralph Martinelli, and two sisters, Theresa Marotta and Carmela Camosse, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Louis and Anna (DiPari) Martinelli, and lived his entire life here.
Mr. Martinelli worked more than 44 years at St. John's Cemetery, retiring many years ago. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church. He was frequently seen walking the Shrewsbury Street area, answering to the names "Popcorn' or "Peanuts'.
A funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14, from Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home & Garden Chapel, 179 Shrewsbury St., with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Paul F. Mattson, 67

WORCESTER -- Paul F. Mattson, 67, of 1060 Main St., died Sunday, Nov. 11, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after a brief illness.
His former wife, Beverly (Levine) Arcand, died in 1989. He leaves two daughters, Jeannette Cote of the North Grosvenordale section of Thompson and Linda Barzcz of Worcester; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Donna Locke of Gardner, died in 1999. He was born in Worcester, son of Anna E. Mattson. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Mattson managed the Peterson House for more than 20 years before retiring.
The funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Nov. 16, in Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. A calling hour is 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 16, in the funeral home.

BROOKFIELD -- Horace L. May, 96, of 20 South Maple St., a former police chief, died Saturday, Nov. 10, in Harrington Memorial Hospital.
He leaves his wife of 30 years, G. Imojene (Fuller) May; three sons, Horace L. May of Fort Plain, N.Y., Boyce V. May of Ware and James A. May of New York; a daughter, Barbara R. Wilson of Brookfield; a stepdaughter, Marti Taylor of Brookfield; a sister, Dorothy Loomer of Glendale, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. His first wife, Barbara V. (Boyce) May, died in 1963. A daughter, Constance V. Gorak, and a son, Donald W. May, predeceased him. He was born in Brookfield, son of Horace W. and Minnie (Richards) May and lived his entire life here. He attended Brookfield schools.
Mr. May worked 26 years as a probation officer for East Brookfield District Court, retiring in 1972. Previously, he worked 16 years at Elm Hill Farms Orchard. He was a justice of the peace for 24 years and was Brookfield Cemetery superintendent for 27 years. He was a member of the Brookfield Fire Department for 66 years and served on the town's police force for 26 years, including eight as its chief. He was a member of the Hayden Lodge of Masons for 71 years, and the Shriners Scottish Right, Springfield, for 49 years.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Congregational Church, Brookfield Common. Burial will be in Brookfield Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, Old West Brookfield Road. JACKSONVILLE, Vt. -- Linda (Gauthier) McHugh, 50, of Jacksonville, formerly of Leominster, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 9, in Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Brattleboro, after an illness.
She leaves her mother, Rita M. Gauthier of Leominster; two daughters, Meghan McHugh of Boston and Amber McHugh of Wilmington, Vt.; a brother, Edmund J. Gauthier of Leominster; a sister, Nancy Gauthier of Leominster; her companion, Richard Brown of Jacksonville, with whom she lived; nieces and nephews. She was born and raised in Leominster, daughter of Carl H. and Rita M. (Andrews) Gauthier.
Mrs. McHugh was a licensed practical nurse at hospitals, nursing homes and private homes. She was a former member of St. Leo's Parish, Leominster.
The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 12, from Curley-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 89 West St., Leominster, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 108 Main St., Leominster. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery, Leominster. A calling hour is 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the funeral home.

PLYMOUTH -- MaryAnn (Hayes) McMahon, 55, of Plymouth, formerly of Shrewsbury, a retired educator, died Thursday, Nov. 8, at her home.
Her husband, Daniel McMahon, predeceased her. She leaves a brother, James T. Hayes of Westboro. She was born in Worcester, daughter of James E. and Julia (Barron) Hayes, and lived in Shrewsbury before moving to Plymouth. She attended Notre Dame Academy, Worcester, and graduated from Boston College.
Mrs. McMahon was an English teacher at the junior high and high school levels in Holbrook for more than 32 years, retiring in June.
The funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, from Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., with a Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Court Street, North Plymouth. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the funeral home. ROCHESTER, N.H. -- William M. Melvin, 44, of 6 Henry Drive, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Sunday, Nov. 11, in Frisbie Memorial Hospital.
He leaves his wife, Velma Melvin; a son, William M. Melvin Jr. of Bar Harbor, Maine; his mother, Barbara (Mertin) Melvin of Worcester; two brothers, Dennis Melvin of Leicester, Mass., and Steven Melvin of Worcester; two sisters, Diane Denault of Worcester and Kathleen Fuoco of West Yarmouth, Mass.; a grandson; nephews and nieces. He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., son of Richard A. Melvin, and lived many years in Worcester before moving to Hampton in 1995. He attended North High School, Worcester.
Mr. Melvin was a supervisor for Adam's Tool and Die, Worcester, for 10 years. He then was a self-employed painter. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann's Church, Worcester.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. WORCESTER -- Regina M. (Doherty) Mercier, 93, of 101 Chadwick St., a former executive secretary, died Saturday, Nov. 10, in the St. Francis Home.
Her husband, Charles H. Mercier, died in 1995. She leaves two sons, Robert C. Mercier of Worcester and John C. Mercier of Norwich, Conn.; a daughter, Jean M. Cooney of Olney, Md.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A brother, William Doherty, predeceased her. She was born in Lawrence.
Mrs. Mercier was an executive secretary for many years at the former Harrington Richardson Co., Worcester. She was a member of Our lady of the Rosary Church and its Women's Sodality.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 28 Fales St. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Notre Dame Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Elisabeth W. Morss, 83

HARDWICK -- Elisabeth W. (Mixter) Morss, 83, of 120 Ridge Road, known for her artistry and gardening, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, at her home.
Her husband of 43 years, Henry Morss Jr., died in 1993. She leaves nephews and nieces. She was born in Brookline, daughter of Samuel and Anne (Williams) Mixter, and lived several years in Hardwick. She graduated from the Winsor School, and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Mrs. Morss worked for the Museum of Fine Arts' Division of Education before her marriage.
She enjoyed reading, conservation and art. She was a gardener and accomplished herbalist, whose designs for small gardens were published. She gave talks on the history and uses of herbs. She also created cut-paper silhouettes, which she exhibited under her maiden name. She was skilled at needlepoint and knitted extensively for the Fragment Society, winning many awards.
She was a member of the Herb Society of America, the garden clubs of Marblehead and Beacon Hill, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, the Boston Athenaeum and the Boston Printmakers Society.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in Hardwick Unitarian Church, on the Common. There are no calling hours. Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., Ware, is directing arrangements.
Leo B. Nelson Jr., 76

WELLINGTON, Fla. -- Leo B. Nelson Jr., 76, of Wellington, formerly of Clinton, Mass., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Wellington after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Helena (Welch) Nelson; three daughters, Donna Korbel of Wellington, with whom he lived, Margaret Bevins of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Elizabeth Delgiudice of Leominster, Mass.; two brothers, Harold Nelson of Horseshoe, N.C., and Herbert Nelson of Sterling, Mass.; two sisters, Marion Richards of Florida City and Marie Grant of Pembroke Pines; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Two sons, Leo B. Nelson III and Robert Nelson, and a brother, George Nelson, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton, son of Leo B. Nelson Sr. and Estella (Reith) Nelson, and lived many years in Clinton and Sterling. He attended Sterling schools.
Mr. Nelson worked for Sterling Transportation. He was a building manager for Ambassador Apartments and the 5901 Building, both in Miami. He enjoyed camping and traveling.
No funeral service is planned. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. Shivah was held at his daughter's residence in Wellington. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling, is directing arrangements.
