AUBURN -- Mary T. Cataldo, 91, of 14 Church St., formerly of Worcester, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, in Christopher House, Worcester, after an illness.

She leaves a brother, Anthony Cataldo, with whom she lived; two sisters, Josephine Cataldo, with whom she lived and Rose M. Rosienski of Southbridge; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. A brother, Rockwood Cataldo, and a sister, Jenny Scavone, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Donato and Mary (Scavone) Cataldo, and lived most of her life in Worcester before moving to Auburn in 1982. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester.

She was a member of St. John's Church in Worcester and was active with the Pernet Sisters of Worcester. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting.

The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, from the Garden Chapel of Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home, 179 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, in the funeral home.

Elsie K. Freitag, 89
Wednesday, November 21, 2001

STURBRIDGE -- Elsie K. (Uphoff) Freitag, 89, of 7 Cedar Pond Road, a former business owner, died Monday, Nov. 19, at home after an illness.

Her husband of 22 years, Walter A. Freitag, died in 1996. She leaves two daughters, Linda Neff of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and Anita Turner of Bangor, Maine; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Germany, daughter of Wilhelm and Wilemina Uphoff, and moved to the United States at age 16. She summered in Sturbridge while living many years in the Catskills, N.Y., and moved here permanently 12 years ago.

Mrs. Freitag owned and operated a diner in Hopewell Junction and in the Catskills before retiring. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial will be in St. Anne's Cemetery. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in the funeral home.

Louis R. Kaczynski, 85
Saturday, November 24, 2001

WEBSTER -- Louis R. "Katzy" Kaczynski, 85, of 105 Lower Gore Road, died Friday, Nov. 23, at Hubbard Regional Hospital after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Pauline L. (Lewis) Kaczynski; a son, Richard L. Kaczynski of Sturbridge; a daughter, Paula K. Duquette of Dudley; a brother, Julian Kaczynski of Webster; a sister, Celia Remillard of New Hampshire; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A sister, Mae Murphy of Florida, predeceased him. He was born in Webster, son of Joseph and Amelia (Bugno) Kaczynski. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1934 and Nichols College in 1971. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kaczynski was an engineer at the American Optical Co., Southbridge, for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He later worked as a maintenance man and gardener at Hubbard Regional Hospital for 12 years. He was a member of St. Louis Parish and the Quarter Century Club of American Optical Co. He was an avid gardener and beekeeper.

The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 26, from the Scanlon Funeral Service, East Main Street, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Louis Church, 15 Lake St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Ernest O. Menard, 79
Tuesday, November 20, 2001

DANIELSON, Conn. -- Ernest O. Menard, 79, of 9 Hillside Terrace, formerly of Attawaugan, died Saturday, Nov. 17, in Roncalli Health Care Center in Killingly.

His wife, Marion (St. Cyr) Menard, died May 3. He leaves two daughters, Karen Salvas of Ballouville, and Gloria Levesque of Sterling; three brothers, Ormer Menard of North Grosvenordale, and Robert and William Menard, both of Thompson; three sisters, Elaine Moran and Blanche Czernicki, both of Webster, Mass., and Orra Bartlette of Jewett City; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. His first wife of 49 years, Yvonne (Hetu) Menard, died in 1993. He was born in Auburn, Mass., son of Ephran and Lethica (Roberts) Menard, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He served with a tank division in Germany, and received the Purple Heart.

Mr. Menard was a security guard 10 years at Putnam Hertzel, retiring in 1988, and also worked at the former Putnam Woolen Co. and Hale Manufacturing Co.

He enjoyed woodworking.

The graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in St. Joseph Cemetery, North Grosvenordale. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Northeastern Connecticut, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam, is directing arrangements.

Janet L. Zuidema, 46
Monday, November 19, 2001

AUBURN -- Janet L. (Zuidema) Zuidema, 46, of 4 Franklin St., a machine operator, died Friday, Nov. 16, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident Nov. 16 in Worcester.

She leaves her husband of 19 years, Stephen Zuidema; two daughters, Mandy L. Zuidema and Stephanie M. Zuidema, both of Auburn; her stepfather and mother, Peter and Fabiola E. (Zuidema) Zuidema of Auburn; her maternal grandmother, Exelina D. (Cofske) Zuidema of Sutton; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was born in Boston, daughter of Harold K. Goddard, and was raised in Millbury. She graduated from Millbury High School.

Mrs. Zuidema was a machine operator at Jefferson Rubber Works in Worcester.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, in Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury. Following cremation, burial will be in Howard Cemetery, Sutton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01710.

John J. O'Malley, 72
Sunday, November 25, 2001

CLINTON -- John J. O'Malley, 72, of 271 Chestnut St., died Friday, Nov. 23, in Clinton Hospital after an long struggle with cancer.

He leaves his niece, Maureen A. Bjorkman of Sterling; a grandniece and grandnephew. A sister, Barbara J. Winchester of Worcester, died in 1989. He was born in Clinton, son of Austin F. and Catherine M. (Creeron) O'Malley. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1946 and was a member of the 1945 State Championship Football Team. He attended Worcester School of Business and Boston University.

Mr. O'Malley was vice-president and general manager for Publishers Company, Inc., where he worked in subsidiaries in Washington, D.C., Chevy Chase, Md., Philadelphia, New York and Verona, Italy. He was also director of purchasing for Merkle Press. He retired from the Town Crier Press in Hudson in 1991. He originally began his graphic arts career at the former Colonial Press, Inc., where he worked as an estimator and was president of the credit union. He was a member and director of the Clinton Community Chest. He was a life member of the Clinton Council Knights of Columbus 1701 and Clinton Lodge of Elks 1306, where has was a past exhalted ruler. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and a former member of its choir, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a former member of St. John's Players where he appeared in numerous shows. He played semi-pro football for the Hudson Leathernecks and the Clinton town team. He enjoyed traveling reading and playing cribbage.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27, from the Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, in the funeral home.

Mary C. Bonnafe, 85
Wednesday, November 28, 2001

HUDSON -- Mary C. Bonnafe, 85, of Hudson, died Monday, Nov. 26, at Bolton Manor, Marlboro.

Her husband, William J. Bonnafe, died in 1979. She leaves two daughters, Claire Bonnafe of Hudson and Elaine Amero of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. She was born in Malden, daughter of James and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Cooper, and moved to Hudson in 1946. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School, Revere.

Mrs. Bonnafe was a telephone operator for New England Telephone Co. for many years. She later worked at the Digital Co., before retiring in 1978. She was a charter member of the Hudson Emblem Club.

The funeral will be held Friday, Nov. 30, from the Tighe Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 21 Manning St. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the funeral home.

Alma A. Brickman, 98
Friday, November 30, 2001

SHREWSBURY -- Alma A. (Van Wickle) Brickman, 98, of 40 Julio Drive, a longtime business owner, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Shrewsbury Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Her husband, Hugo W. Brickman, died in 1981. She leaves a son, Donald H. Brickman of Auburn; a brother, Carl Van Wickle of South Yarmouth; and two grandchildren, Donald H. Brickman Jr. of Spencer and Sharon R. Brickman of Worcester. She was born in Lulleuville, N.Y., daughter of Albert G. and Emma (Dorumbecker) Van Wickle, and lived most of her life in Worcester before moving to Shrewsbury 11 years ago.

Mrs. Brickman owned and operated two area florist shops.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in All Faiths Cemetery, 7 Island Road, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Burns Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114. Howard C. Allen Funeral Home, 653 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Richard C. Brissette, 65

WARE -- Richard C. Brissette, 65, of 154 West Main St., a retired shipping foreman and a veteran of the Korean War, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Mary Lane Hospital.

He leaves his wife, Diane (Cuddy) Brissette; two sons, Jody Brissette in Hawaii and Roger Brissette in Virginia; a daughter, Linda Zemojtel of the Wheelwright section of Hardwick; three brothers, Thomas Brissette in Virginia, George Brissette in Louisiana and Ronald Brissette in Oklahoma; a sister, Lorraine Desrosiers in Colorado; and three grandchildren. A brother, Kenneth Brissette, predeceased him. He was born in Spencer, son of George and Victoria (Baker) Brissette, and lived most of his life in Ware. He was a Ware High School graduate, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Brissette was a shipping foreman for Pierson Industries, Palmer, retiring in 1998 after 35 years. He belonged to Pilgrim Baptist Church, North Brookfield, and served as a special police officer in town. He enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.

The military graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Aspen Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 53 Capital Drive, West Springfield, MA 01089; or to another charity. Charbonneau Funeral Home, 30 Pleasant St., is directing arrangements.

Richard C. Brissette, 65

Armonuhy Chakemian

FITCHBURG -- Armonuhy "Alice" (Toromanian) Chakemian, 96, of 94 Summer St., the city's oldest resident of Armenian descent, died Thursday, Nov. 22, in Hillcrest Nursing Home after an illness.

Her husband of 61 years, John Chakemian, died in 1982. She leaves several nieces and nephews. A daughter, Mary Chakemian, and a sister, Chenrocick Derderian, predeceased her. She was born in Hamidea, Turkey, daughter of Krikor and Arouseag Toromanian, and moved to the United States in 1921, settling in Fitchburg.

Mrs. Chakemian was a member of Rollstone Congregational Church, the Armenian Church of Our Saviour, Worcester, and St. Vartanaz Armenian Church, Chelmsford. She was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, the World War I Widows Club, Fitchburg Booster Club and Friends of the Fitchburg Public Library.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Rollstone Congregational Church, 199 Main St. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. A calling hour is 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the church. Bosk Funeral Home, 85 Blossom St., is directing.

Grace Chiarelli, 82

MADISON, Conn. -- Grace (Piccolomini) Chiarelli, 82, of Madison, formerly of Boylston, Mass. and Leominster, Mass., died Sunday, Nov. 25, in Watrous Nursing Home.

Her husband, Joseph P. Chiarelli, died in 1973. She leaves two daughters, Elisa M. LaChance of Shrewsbury, Mass. and Denise M. Dudas of Madison; a brother, Columbo Piccolomini of Centerville, Mass.; two sisters, Ernesta Piccolomini and Conchette Dandini, both of Leominster; and four grandchildren. Two brothers, Pietro and Dario Piccolomini, predeceased her. She was born in Pretare, Italy, daughter of Rocco and Elisa (Turini) Piccolomini, and came to the United States in 1929. She lived 19 years in Leominster and 62 years in Boylston before moving to Connecticut six years ago.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, Mass., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anna's Church, 199 Lancaster St., Leominster. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Clinton, Mass. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30,

Arthur Collette Jr., 73

MILLBURY -- Arthur J. Collette Jr., 73, of 15 Millbury Ave., a retired manager, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the Jewish Health Care Center, Worcester.

He leaves his wife, Eve E. (Patriquin) Collette; a son, Dean A. Collette of Sherman Oak, Calif.; two daughters, Debra R. Collette-Grandone of Grafton and Robin L. Collette of Worcester; a brother, Robert Collette of Saugerties, N.Y.; a sister, Lillian Devoe of Millbury; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A sister, Ruth Holmes, predeceased him. He was born in Millbury, son of Arthur J. and Ruth (Bengtson) Collette Sr. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1947, Worcester Junior College in 1967 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1971. He was a Korean War era Army veteran, serving in Germany and Guam.

Mr. Collette was a personnel manager at New England High Carbon Wire Company where he worked for 32 years, until the company closed. He then worked at NESCO for five years, retiring in 1989. He was a director and past president of the former Millbury Community fund and a former member of the Millbury Finance Committee.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the First Congregational Church, West Main Street. Burial will be in Central Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Central Mass. Inc., 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346.

Clifford Duxbury Jr., 77; World War II POW

PAXTON -- Clifford S. Duxbury Jr., 77, of 4 Nipmuc Road, a World War II veteran, died Friday, Nov. 23, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus.

He leaves his wife of 44 years, Nancy C. (Gould) Duxbury; a daughter, Beth Anne Duxbury of Worcester; a son, C. Craig Duxbury, also of Worcester; a brother, Harold Duxbury of Florida; a sister, Doris Mansur of Springfield; and a grandson. He was born in South Attleboro, son of Clifford S. and Sarah M. (Edwards) Duxbury. He graduated from Pawtucket (R.I.) High School in 1942 and earned a degree in Political Science from Brown University in 1949. He also attended Clark University, Rhode Island College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy; he was taken prisoner in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Duxbury owned and operated Marketing Communications Services for 18 years. Previously, he worked as a public relations manager at Norton Co. and at Bay State Abrasives. He also had been a diplomatic courier for the U.S. State Department at the Paris Embassy.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, Westboro. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association, Central Massachusetts Chapter. He was a past president of the Worcester Area Advertising Club and was active in several local charities, including the Big Brothers Association and the Salvation Army.

A funeral with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the First United Methodist Church, 120 West Main St., Westboro. Private burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Mass. Chapter 22 Monument Fund, c/o the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association, 425 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01609, or to the First United Methodist Church, 120 West Main St., Westboro MA 01581. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 1147 Main St., Holden, is directing arrangements.
