HENRY R. BRETT III
SAN FRANCISCO - Henry R. Brett III died April 5, 1998, in San Francisco.
Henry was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Cumberland, Md. Though he conducted his life with humility, he distinguished himself in his professional and private life.

Mr. Brett was a graduate of LaSalle High School in Cumberland and developed an early interest in public relations while apprenticing as a cub photographer with the Cumberland Times. While freelancing, he photographed the governor of Maryland during a local calamity, was interviewed by Alfred Stieglitz and subsequently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

During World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy, became a SeaBee and saw frontline action while helping to construct airfield communications in the Marshall and Solomon islands.

Upon discharge, Mr. Brett graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. A member of KI PI fraternity, he became President of the West Coast Chapter of the F&M; Alumni Association. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Georgia and the University of San Francisco.

He first found work at the California Research and Development Company (predecessor to the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory) and then at the Standard Oil Company of California (predecessor to Chevron USA Inc.). While at CR&D;, he met and married Carol Calbreath, daughter of Southern Pacific Executive Raymond Calbreath and his wife Gladys, and niece of the former San Francisco Sheriff, Supervisor and California State Assemblyman, Dan Gallagher.

While with Chevron, Mr. Brett distinguished himself in the public relations arena as Manager of Corporate Contributions. His testimony before a Congressional subcommittee (the Filer Commission) provided a convincing argument for corporate deductibility of charitable contributions. He was appointed Chevron's representative to the original Conference Board, was elected Chairman of the San Francisco Contributions Roundtable and served on the Board of Trustees of the United Way of the Bay Area. Along the way, he found time to serve as the President of the Midtown Terrace Homeowners Association.

Upon retiring from Chevron, he served as interim Director of Development of the Asia Foundation.

Mr. Brett is survived by his wife Carol, his four sons Bob, Raymond, Daniel and Charles, and his mother-in-law Gladys Calbreath.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Way.
