IRVIN FELD
OAKLAND - Irvin Feld, 80, of 707 East High St., Oakland, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Jan. 14, 1918, in Weston, W.Va., he was a son of the late Frank H. Feld and Rachel (Leibowitz) Feld.

Mr. Feld moved to Oakland in 1931, graduated from the Oakland High School in 1935, and the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania in 1939.

He was president of the H-P Stores Inc. prior to its liquidation in 1982 after 51 years in business and encompassing 40 junior stores in Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He was a member of the board of directors of the Garrett National Bank for 27 years; member of the board of governors of Garrett County Memorial Hospital for 26 years, 25 of which he served as chairman. He served 4 1/2 years in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps serving 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific. He was discharged with the rank of captain in 1946.

Mr. Feld was active in community affairs including the Post World War II reopening of the Oakland Country Club where he served on the board of governors and as treasurer.

He participated in acquiring land options for the flood control plan by the Soil Conservation Service.

He was a past board member and treasurer of the Mt. Top Chamber of Commerce during which time the Garrett County Promotion Council was formed as a separate organization.

He served on the boards of Potomac Council Boy Scouts of America, the Goodwill Industries, and the Garrett County Playhouse.

He was a member of the Deep Creek Yacht Club (Turkey Neck) since 1965, and served two terms as a board member and one as treasurer. He also was a reciprocal member of Deep Creek Yacht Club (Deer Haven). He also was a board member and past treasurer of the Mountain Lake Park Tennis Club.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey (Sperry) Feld; two sons, Fred Feld, Santa Monica, Calif., and Michael Feld, San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Leona Lipstein, Philadelphia, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Amanda Feld, Tara Feld, Taylor Feld and Corey Feld.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be directed in Mr. Feld's name to the Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

STANLEY H. "PETE" HITCHINS
VALE SUMMIT - Stanley H. "Pete" Hitchins, 76, of Vale Summit, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Aug. 15, 1921, in Carlos, he was the son of the late Charles and Catherine (Schell) Hitchins.

He was manager of the Hudson Gas Station, LaVale, and later worked for NEWS Company in Bowling Green and Lonaconing. He was a member of Vale Summit United Methodist Church. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Farrady Post #24. He enjoyed working with wood.

Surviving are his wife, Anna (Fatkin) Hitchins; one daughter, Mary Catherine Gomer and husband, Richard, Frostburg; two granddaughters, Stephanie Beeman and husband, Robert, and Stacey Lynn Gomer, all of Frostburg; one brother, Harry Hitchins, Woodland; and one sister, May Athey, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.

Interment will be in Vale Summit cemetery.

BENJAMIN HUGHES JR.
FROSTBURG - Benjamin Hughes Jr., 71, of 33 Uhl St., Frostburg, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home where he had been a patient since April.
Born April 10, 1927, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Benjamin Hughes Sr. and Mary (Walker) Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in Panama. He was a graduate of Beall High School, Class of 1945, and of Frostburg State College. He taught in the Allegany County school system until his retirement in December 1983.

He was a member of Frostburg Lodge 470 BPOE and Farrady Post 24 American Legion. He was a charter member of the Maplehurst Country Club. He was a life-long member of St. John's Episcopal Church. A well-known entertainer, he enjoyed playing his banjo and singing with Three Banjos and a Belle and several other musical groups in the area.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca "Recky" (Purgitt) Hughes; two daughters, Lynn Hughes Tudor and husband Dr. Edgar T. Tudor Jr., Raleigh, N.C., and Nancy Hughes, Columbia, Md.; one sister Ruth Hughes Higgins, Frostburg; two grandchildren, Dr. Rebecca Tudor and Jennifer Tudor, Raleigh; one niece, Connie Sullivan and husband Ronald, Huntington, Md.; and a grandnephew, Stephen Sullivan, Cumberland.

At. Mr. Hughes' request, his body will be cremated. There will be no visitation.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church, 58 Broadway, Frostburg, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leslie R. Miles, M.D., officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the mass.

Memorial gifts may be made in Mr. Hughes' memory to the St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund.

The Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., Frostburg, is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES C. HIXSON
CUMBERLAND - Charles Clayton Hixson, 33, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 19, 1965, in Cumberland, he was the son of Juanita (Thomas) Hixson, with whom he resided, and the late Richard E. Hixson.

Mr. Hixson was an employee of the Times-News in Cumberland. He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School in 1983 and received his associate of arts degree in Computer Programming from Allegany College.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Penny L. Tew, and husband, Donnie, Breezewood, Pa.; two half brothers, Michael L. Hixson, and wife, Linda, Jacksonville, Fla., Timothy Hixson, and wife, Rhonda, Virginia; two nephews; and three nieces.

At Charles' request, his body will be cremated. He also requested there be no visitation or funeral service. His cremains will be buried at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

RUDOLPH J. KOMPANEK
CUMBERLAND - Rudolph J. Kompanek, 86, formerly of Frederick Street, now residing at the Cumberland Nursing Home, and a patient of Memorial Hospital, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 1, 1998.
Born Jan. 6, 1912, in Ford City, Pa., he was the son of the late Andrew J. Kompanek Sr. and Mary A. (Sabo) Kompanek. His wife, Anne Belle (Rubenstein) Kompanek, died March 14, 1996. Three sisters also preceded him in death.

A retired superintendent at the Bolt and Forge Shops in Cumberland, he had 42 years of service with the B&O; Railroad, where he retired in 1971. He was a 72-year member of Centre Street United Methodist Church, where he was a former member of the Sanctuary Choir. He was a 46-year member of Cumberland Lodge 63, BPO Elks.

Surviving are one son, "Sonny" Kompanek and wife Elissa, New York City; one daughter, Judy Hager and husband Jim, Cumberland; two brothers, Andrew J. Kompanek Jr., Philadelphia, and Harry W. Kompanek and wife Mary, Santa Barbara, Calif.; four sisters, Gertrude T. Hartsock, Cumberland, Veronica O. Moore and husband Alvin, Virginia, Theoda L. Hohing and husband John, Herndon, Va., and Josephine H. Campbell and husband James, Los Altos, Calif.; three grandchildren, Christopher Kompanek and Nina Kompanek, both of New York City, and Mark D. Brayer and wife "Danni," New Whiteland, Ind.; one great-granddaughter, Haley E. Brayer, New Whiteland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Cumberland Lodge 63 BPO Elks will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be from the Centre Street United Methodist Men's Club.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Centre Street United Methodist Church.

PAUL V. LEPLEY
CUMBERLAND - Paul Vincent Lepley, 69, of Oak Street, Cumberland, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at home.
Born Nov. 5, 1929, in Great Cacapon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rister and Sarah (Lewis) Lepley. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Lepley was a retired school bus driver for the Henderson Bus Company. He served in the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Dolores J. Lepley; two daughters, Linda Spiker and husband, David, Gloria Silvious, both of Cumberland; two sons, Paul William Lepley, Jerry L. Lepley and wife, Karen, both of Cumberland; five sisters, Juanita Rexrode, Evelyn Bennett, both of Cumberland, Ann Durtz, Baltimore, Clara Smith, Betty Smith, both of Geneva, Ohio; one brother, Sylvester Lepley, Cumberland; four granddaughters, Kimberly Spiker, Terri Martin, Julie Lepley, Jessica Ann Iiliff; one grandson, Jason Lepley; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Sherrill Dillon officiating.

Interment will be in St. Luke's Lutheran cemetery, Cumberland.

Graveside military services will be conducted by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
