WALTER J. MAXEY
CUMBERLAND - Walter Jackson Maxey, 82, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1915, in Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of the late Samuel D. Maxey and the late Rose Elizabeth (Fahneystock) Maxey.

Mr. Maxey was a retired insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance Companies, where he worked for more than 25 years. He was a member of the company's Challenger Club and had earned The National Quality Award. He graduated from Allegany High School, Class of 1932. He completed a business management course with I.C.S., Scranton, Pa. He attended Catherman's Business School in Cumberland.

He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church where he served as church historian, lay leader, financial secretary, trustee, and assistant teacher of the adult class. He served on a committee on wills and legal papers. He was past church school superintendent and past president of the board of trustees and Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Mr. Maxey was past president of Cumberland-Frederick-Hagerstown District Missionary and Church Extension Society of the United Methodist Church, Baltimore Conference. He was a past member of the Executive Committee and the Budget, Finance and Projects Committee of the Board of Missions of Baltimore Conference, United Methodist Church. He also was on the conference board of laity, lay members to the annual conference for more than 25 years. He was past District Lay Leader of the Cumberland-Hagerstown District, serving as Director of Stewardship, as well as being a member of the Baltimore Conference of Laity. He was a committee member of District Committee on church locations. He was past president of District Youth Fellowship, past president and director for Young Adult work and Intermediate work. He also was the past district director for United Methodist Men.

Mr. Maxey was the past general chairman for the Allegany County Mental Health Campaign. He worked with the business section of the annual County United Fund Drive and local Heart Drive. He served as Vice President, Treasurer, and Chairman of Programs and Playgrounds for the Columbia Street PTA.

He was a registered Boy Scout for more than 30 years and a past district commissioner for Nemacolin Trail, Potomac Council BSA. He also served as Chairman, Cub Master of Pack, Neighborhood Commissioner, Assistant District Commissioner, and Round Table Commissioner for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and adult leaders. He was the past Grand Counselor of Cumberland Council 179, U.C.T. and past Grand Counselor of KY, VA, WV, MD, and DC. He attended all conventions including Supreme Sessions.

Mr. Maxey was a member of East Gate Lodge 216 AF & AM, past Chaplain and Chairman of Trestle Board publication. He was past High Priest of Salem Chapter, R.A.M., serving as Chaplain and Secretary, past Thrice Illustrious Master of Salem Council 11, R.A.M., serving as Recorder and Secretary of York Rite Bodies.

He was an officer in Antioch Commandry 6, York Rite Masonry, past Eminent Commander and Recorder. He was a member of Ali Ghan Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and served on the advertising circus committee. He was a past Secretary of the Union Rescue Mission Board of Directors. He was a past Vice President and Treasurer of the Union Grove Camp Meeting Association's Board of Directors. He was a member of the Potomac Men's Barbershop, SPEBSQSA, Allegany County Barber Shop Quartet, September Singers, Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion, and Farm Bureau. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Helen (McElfish) Maxey, Cumberland; two daughters, Carolyn G. Largent and fiance Bernard Warfield, Damascus, Md., and Elaine S. Floyd and husband Dr. Rodney Floyd, Severna Park, Md.; three brothers, Frank H. Maxey, Winter Park, Fla., Eugene R. Maxey, Philadelphia, Pa., and Lewis V. Maxey, Cumberland; a sister, Helen G. White, Cumberland; five grandsons, David Largent, Hong Kong, Matthew Largent, Damascus, Michael Floyd, Gavin Floyd and Brendon Floyd, all of Severna Park, Md.; and a granddaughter, Alana Largent McAuliffe, Gaithersburg, Md.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William S. Hart officiating.

Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Largent, Matthew Largent, Michael Floyd, Gavin Floyd, Brendon Floyd, William Rice, Paul Rice, and Dr. Charles McElfish.

A Masonic Service will be conducted by East Gate Lodge 216 at the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, c/o Judy Athey, treasurer, 12100 Old Mt. Pleasant Road, NE, Cumberland; Walter and Grace Maxey Scholarship Fund, Allegany College; and the Walter J. Maxey Scholarship Endowment Fund, Asbury Seminary, 204 North Lexington Avenue, Wilmore, KY 40390-1199.

ALBERT "SKIP" MAY
CRESAPTOWN - Albert Barry "Skip" May, 34, of Oakwood Street, S.W., Cresaptown, passed away Friday, May 8, 1998, in Middletown, Pa.
Born in Cumberland on Feb. 17, 1964, he was the son of Helen (Rosley) May of Cumberland and the late Benjamin May; also, special parents Ernest Nicholas and Linda Combs, both of Cresaptown.

He is survived by his wife, Joan (Lee) May, Cumberland; two sons, Jeremy May, Fort Myer, Fla., Jonathan May, Cumberland; three sisters, Louise Huff, and husband, Ronald, Cresaptown, Diane Martin, and husband, Charlie, Middletown, and Debbie Crites, and husband, Gary, Oldtown; two brothers, Benjamin May, and wife, Nadine, LaVale, and Frank May, and wife, Mary, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Craig George officiating.

ALPHA PEARL MAY
CUMBERLAND - Alpha Pearl May, 84, of Cumberland, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Jan. 27, 1914, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Amos M. and Clara Belle (Twigg) Davis. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Carrie Davis, Olive Sathoff, Lillian Harden; and two brothers, Frances Davis and Wilbert Rummer.

Mrs. May was a homemaker. She attended Pennsylvania Avenue High School, Catherman's Business School, and Christ Lutheran Church, Madley, Pa.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Denzil May; one sister, Dorothy L. McDonald, and husband, Roy, Cumberland; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many very good friends.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert T. Barr Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Park.

JUDITH MAYHEW
WESTRERNPORT - Judith Mayhew, 66, of 21905 Mule Creek Road, Westernport, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 17, 1931, at Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Arthur T. and Alma (Smith) Braithwaite.

Mrs. Mayhew was retired as cafeteria manager at Westernport Elementary School, having 39 years of service with the Allegany County Board of Education. She was a member of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly of Keyser; and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Queens Point VFW Post 6775.

Surviving are her husband, Roy Mayhew; two sons, David Gentry Jr. and wife Jeannie, and Jimmy Gentry and wife Phyllis, all of Westernport; two daughters, Janice Ann Gentry, Winchester, Va., and Barbara Jean Hartung and husband George, State College, Pa.; two stepsons, Roy Allen Mayhew and Martin Leo Mayhew and wife Rhonda, all of Keyser; three brothers, Robert Braithwaite, Westernport, William Braithwaite, Oakland, and John Braithwaite, Westernport; two sisters, Betty Clark, Westernport, and Carol Wilson, Savage River; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday, Sept. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Earl Williams.

Interment will be in the Duckworth cemetery, Stoney Run.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Children's Church of Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Assembly, Keyser.

HELEN MAYO
CUMERLAND - Helen Mayo, of Cumberland, died Thursday, October 29, 1998, at the Washington Hospital Center.
Born in Charleroi, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mike and Anna Nuss.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Mayo, on March 30, 1991.

Mrs. Mayo was a member of Centre Street United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Women's Civic Club of Cumberland, and the Women's Sport Club.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Carcella, Burke, Va., and Thomas Mayo, Cumberland; one daughter, Helen Mary Leach, Dublin, Ohio; two brothers, Michael Nuss, Michigan, and William Nuss, Brookline, Pa.; one sister, Elizabeth Bogdewic, Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service and interment will be held by the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1114, Cumberland, MD 21502.

DOROTHY N. MCADAMS
FROSTBURG - Dorothy N. (Crowe) McAdams, 72, of 209 Bernard St., Frostburg, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, where she was a patient for six months.
Born Sept. 5, 1925, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Gladys (Goodrich) Crowe. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin P. McAdams; and one brother, Ralph Crowe.

Mrs. McAdams was a graduate of Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and furthered her studies and taught in the Baltimore County Technical School. She was well-loved by her students who called her Big Mac. Dorothy will be missed by her friend, Peggy Snyder, with whom she shared her love for gardening.

Surviving are three sons, Mike McAdams, Prince Frederick, Rudy McAdams, Westminster, and Steve McAdams, Finzel; one stepbrother, Ronald Crowe, Beltsville; and three grandchildren.

At Mrs. McAdams' request, her body was cremated. There will be no visitation or services. The Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to ARC of Southern Maryland Inc., c/o Mike McAdams, P.O. Box 1860, Prince Frederick, MD 20678.
