E. MAXINE SAWYER
JENNINGS, La. - E. Maxine (Boone) Sawyer, 74, died June 12, 1998, in the Jennings American Legion Hospital.
Born Jan. 3, 1924, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Homer and Jessie (Garrett) Boone. Her husband, Eugene D. Sawyer, preceded her in death on June 10, 1982.
Mrs. Sawyer was a resident of Jennings for the past 51 years. She graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1941; she graduated from Catherman's Business School, Cumberland, and worked for the government in Washington, D.C.
During World War II she served as a sargeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. She was a retired employee of the Jennings Water Department. Mrs. Sawyer was a member of Jennings United Methodist Church, the Suzanna Circle of United Methodist Women, the Nelson Bible Class, and the Pink Ladies of the Jennings American Legion Hospital.
Services were held June 15, 1998, at the Jennings United Methodist Church; the Rev. Penn Morgan officiated. Burial was held at Greenwood cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Bill Oliver, Ben Fontenot, Jim Way, Lynn Burford, Rodney Evans, Rick Evans and Keith Morris. Honorary Pallbearers were Al Lackey, Mel Albritton, Jim Burford, Cherry Foreman and Walter Morgan.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen, and husband, Dale Fontenot, and Marilyn Sawyer, Jennings; one son, Glen A., and wife, Betsy Sawyer, of Vidalia, La.; one sister, Norita L. Morris, Cumberland; three brothers, Marshall W. Boone, Hyattsville, Md., Eugene Boone, Potomac, Md., John R. Boone, Cumberland; five grandchildren, Becky Fontenot, Benjamin Fontenot, Brittney Roy and Michael and David Sawyer; and two great-grandchildren, Morganne and Karsen Fontenot.
GENEVIEVE M. SCARPELLI
FROSTBURG - Genevieve M. "Genny" Scarpelli, 84, of 161 Mount Pleasant St., Frostburg, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 6, 1913, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Julia (Givliana) Taccino. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Scarpelli; one sister, Vera Pifalo; and one brother, Michael J. Taccino.
Mrs. Scarpelli was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Sodality.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia S. Andrews and husband Robert, with whom she resided; two grandsons, Bryan and Todd Andrews; one great-granddaughter, Faith Andrews; three sisters, Emma Montana, Frostburg, Marguerite Warne and husband Everett, Frostburg, and Betty Mills and husband Joseph, Frostburg; two brothers, William Taccino, Keyser, W.Va., and James Taccino and wife Mary, Severna Park; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Prayers will be recited at 7 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m with Father T. Milton Hipsley officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Michael's cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Bryan and Todd Andrews, and nephews Michael S. Warne, Michael A. Warne, Jack Robinson, Terri Andrews and Jack Burdock.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ernest and Genevieve Scarpelli Memorial Scholarship Fund at Allegany College of Maryland, Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
GERALD F. SCARPELLI
FROSTBURG - Gerald F. "Barp" Scarpelli, 56, of 260 E. Main St., Frostburg, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 4, 1941, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Thomas and Angela (Minnick) Scarpelli.
Mr. Scarpelli was retired from the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice where he was a youth supervisor. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg; Cresaptown Eagles Arie 2883; and the Cresaptown Sportsman Club.
Surviving are his wife, Ann (Ringler) Scarpelli; one son, Richard T. Scarpelli, Frostburg; one daughter, Jeri L. Robertson and husband Eddie, Eckhart; three grandsons, Justin, P.J. and Jason Tippen; one sister, Marlene Broadwater, Mount Savage; one stepson, Rob Zembower, at home; one stepdaughter, Marlene Zembower, Cumberland; and a special friend, Jake.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2:30 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. William Moody as celebrant.
Cremation will follow with inurnment in St. Michael's Parish cemetery at a later date.
CECIL LEVI SCHAEFER
GRANTSVILLE - Cecil Levi Schaefer, 68, of 425 Amish Road, Grantsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his residence.
Born May 19, 1929, in Grantsville, he was a son of the late James A. and Minta C. (Resh) Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer was a retired foreman for Martin-Marietta Aerospace - Welding Division. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of Garrett County Horsemen's Association, and was the maintenance director at Starner Hill Apartments.
Survivors include two sons, Alan L. Schaefer, Aurora, Colo., Jeffrey L. Schaefer, Englewood, Colo.; a brother, Mark Schaefer, Savannah, Ga.; a sister, Audrey Kinsinger, Grantsville; one grandchild; and two adopted grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Alan Birkby officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either the Garrett County Horsemen's Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
DONNA L. SCHAIDT
OLDTOWN - Donna L. Schaidt, 68, of Oldtown, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 26, 1929, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John Calvin and Lula Bloom.
Mrs. Schaidt was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, John N. Schaidt; two sons, George N. Schaidt and wife Barbara, and Robert Dean and wife Janice, all of Winchester, Va.; two daughters, Jennifer Wright and husband Steve, Stephens City, Va., and Theresa Posten, Middletown, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Parker officiating.
Interment will be in the Oldtown cemetery.
PATSY J. SCHARF
CUMBERLAND - Patsy Jean Scharf, 60, of Bedford Street, Cumberland, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1937, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Lancaster and Anna Belle (Oates) Lancaster. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Carl G. Scharf, on May 5, 1991.
Mrs. Scharf was the retired owner and operator of Patsy's Beauty Salon on Bedford Street. She also worked at Ellen's Beauty Salon on Centre Street, Mediterranean Beauty Rooms on Virginia Avenue, and the Kight Funeral Home.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two sons, John A. Oates, and Rodney L. Oates and wife Debbie, all of Cumberland; one daughter, Carla R. Davidson and husband Kevin, Midway Park, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lesley M. Oates, Leigh Ann Oates and Rodney L. Oates II, all of Cumberland; Chauntay R. Gray and Samantha D. Miller, both of Midway Park, N.C.; eight cousins, Larry B. Oates, Marshall Shears, Marshall Franklin Oates, Thomas Neff, Jerry Oates, Russell Neff, Donna Rae (Oates) Zoppo, and Anna Renee (Neff) Granger.
At. Mrs. Scharf's request, her body was cremated.
Memorial services and interment will be held at the Rocky Gap Veterans cemetery on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating. Friends may call at the cemetery chapel after 1 p.m.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the American Kidney Foundation.
CARMEL GENEVIEVE SCHOENADEL
LAVALE - Carmel Genevieve Schoenadel, 88, of LaVale, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Springfield, Va.
Born July 29, 1909, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Pardo and Rose (DelPozzo) Ferrone. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Francis A. Schoenadel; and a son, Ronald F. Schoenadel.
Mrs. Schoenadel was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland. She was a parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, the church choir, St. Ambrose Ladies Club, St. Ambrose Bowling League, Cresaptown and Frostburg Senior Citizens. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed dearly. She was our SUNSHINE!
Surviving are two brothers, Joseph Ferrone, Altoona, and Robert Ferrone, Harrisonburg, Pa.; one daughter-in-law, Natalie Schoenadel, Springfield; four grandchildren, Carmel, James, Lynda and Robert; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Emmanuel Camilleri officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
