PANSY LEE KERNS
CUMBERLAND - Services will be conducted for Pansy Lee (Poole) Kerns at the Scarpelli Funeral Home on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Andy Abernathy, Charles Keller, Tom Starkey, Rick Browning, and Reed Browning.
Mrs. Kerns was the daughter of Thornton E. and Margaret (Iser) Poole. She was preceded in death by a brother, Alvey.
In addition to the family members previously mentioned, Mrs. Kerns is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Brooke DeVore, Cumberland; a step-grandson, Lucas Hansrote, Bossier City, La.; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Cody.
FRED C. CARROLL
OAKLAND - Fred Clark "Beck" Carroll, 88, of Oakland, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born June 26, 1909, in Kingwood, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bruce F. Carroll and Mary (Barlow) Carroll.
Mr. Carroll graduated from the West Virginia University with degrees in Physical Education and Science. He was a teacher and coach in Preston County until enlisting in the Navy in 1941, where he was commissioned as Lieutenant and Ships Commanding Officer during World War II. He was the principal of Bayard High School for 13 years and taught Building Trades at Southern High School until his retirement in 1974.
In addition to his parents he also was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Carroll and Floyd Carroll.
He leaves his wife of 45 years Helen (Forman) Carroll; three daughters and their families, Becky and Larry Friend, Loch Lynn, Ann and Steve Sherrard, Accident, and Jane and Matt Pritts, Roanoke, Va.; and 10 grandchildren.
At Mr. Carroll's request, his body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be conducted at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Oakland, on Saturday, July 19, 1997, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating.
Following the service the family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall until 5 p.m.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Garrett Community College Scholarship Fund.
Arrangements are being made by the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland.
HAZEL L. GREEN
LAVALE - Hazel Leona Green, 90, formerly of LaVale Boulevard, LaVale, then a resident of the Avalon Nursing Home, Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born March 11, 1907, in Garrett County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Barbara (Brode) Michael. She also was preceded in death by her husband, David S. Green, in January 1996.
Mrs. Green was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cumberland, and was a housewife.
Surviving are two sons, Stanley F. Green, Hagerstown, and Donald O. Green, Hatfield, Pa.; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Services will follow at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Cusack officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

GEORGE M. HITCHCOCK JR.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - George M. Hitchcock Jr., 64, formerly of Lake Gordon Road, Cumberland, died at Shands in Gainesville, on Aug. 2, 1997.
Mr. Hitchcock was the son of the late George M. and Alva Hitchcock of Jacksonville. Mr. Hitchcock's father was formerly employed by the City of Cumberland as Water Superintendent at Lake Gordon.
Mr. Hitchcock was a 1950 Fort Hill High School graduate. He attended Catherman's Business School and Frostburg State College. He received his bachelor's degree from Jacksonville University, his master's in education from the University of Florida, and his doctorate in education from the University of Florida. He worked at Central Florida Community College for 29 years. At the college, he served as director of admissions, records and counseling. He was president of the Faculty Senate Presidents Association and he was a member and elder of the Maricamp Road Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara (Hunt) Hitchcock, formerly of Bedford, Pa.; a daughter, Julie Hillis, Fort Worth, Texas; a son, George M. Hitchcock III, Pembroke Pines; a brother, W. Theodore Hitchcock, Roswell, N.M., two sisters, Marilyn Lewis, Jacksonville, and Judith McDonald, Fayetteville, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Services were conducted at the Maricamp Road Church of Christ.

GEORGE M. DOWNTON
FROSTBURG - George M. Downton, 86, formerly of 85 West College Avenue, Frostburg, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 13, 1910, in Zihlman, he was the son of the late Edwin and Elizabeth (Eisel) Downton. He also was preceded in death by two wives, Elizabeth Downton and Mary Downton.
Mr. Downton was a retired plumber for Allegany Ballistics Laboratory.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and was an avid gardener.
Surviving are one daughter, Louise Downton Bittinger and husband Edward, Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, David Downton and wife Dorothy, East Pointe, Mich.; one granddaughter, Laura Bittinger; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Ritchey.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be David Downton, Edward Bittinger, Paul Skidmore, and Edgar McFarland, with honorary pallbearer Clarence Stevens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
MARION ELLEN FISHER
CUMBERLAND - Marion Ellen Fisher, 77, of Cumberland, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born July 5, 1920, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Frederick William Armbruster and the late Marion (Griffith) Armbruster. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Fisher in 1997; and her step-mother, Oma Ellen Armbruster in 1997.
Mrs. Fisher was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith White and husband, Charles S., Sr., Arnold; three sisters, Henerietta Prost, Martha Ellen Rowe, and Kathleen Valentine, all of Cumberland; and three grandsons, Charles White, Jr., serving with the United States Navy in New Orleans, La., Andrew White and Tobias White, both of Arnold.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lee A. McDaniel officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
ROY J. KERNS
HAMPTON, Va. - Roy Jackson Kerns, 75, of Hampton, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997. Born in Cumberland, Md., he had been a Hampton resident since 1959.
Mr. Kerns retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1963 after 21 years, then retired from Civil Service at Fort Eustis in 1980, and then retired from Riverside Hospital in 1991. A member of the Army Navy Lodge No. 306 AF&AM;, he was also a member of the Monitor Masonic Lodge No. 0197, VFW Post No. 3219, the American Legion Post 0025, and the Fraternal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1119.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lucille C. Kerns; three daughters, Gwendolyn K. Little, Parkersburg, W.Va., Nancy K. Stone, Kinston, N.C., and Dolores K. Davis, Hampton; one son, Eric L. Kerns, Rockhill, S.C.; a sister, Evelyn K. Harris, Hampton; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, on Sunday from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hampton, on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Timothy W. Spring and Pastor L. Douglas Stowe officiating.
Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
