MELVIN R. GILPIN
CUMBERLAND - Melvin Ray "Bud" Gilpin, 48, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 15, 1949, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Reubin R. and Henrietta E. (Heller) Gilpin.
Mr. Gilpin was an employee of Lumber and Things. He was a l969 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a member of the Republican Club. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Surviving are his fiancee, Linda D. Hare; one stepson, George T. Fisher, Cumberland; three stepdaughters, Mary E. DeLawder, Tonya S. Miller, both of Cumberland, and Patricia L. Slider and husband Ray, Winchester, Va.; one sister, Constance D. Dillsworth and husband Larry, Cumberland; 15 stepgrandchildren; one niece; one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from noon to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 1 p.m. with Deacon Frank Werner officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Pallbearers will be Paul Davidson, John Nixon, Wayne Roy, Patricia Slider, George Fisher and Michael Turner.
JACK K. DAY
CUMBERLAND - Jack K. Day, 70, of 516 Valentine Ave., Cumberland, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at his home.
Born Nov. 6, 1926, in Petersburg, W.Va., he was preceded in death by his mother, Merle Ida Day; and his wife, Naomi E. (Chalfant) Day, in October 1955.
Mr. Day was the owner and operator of Day's Market and Deli; J&N; Beverage Store; and Day's Wholesale Food Service. He was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters 117; Potomac Lodge 100 AF & AM; Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Free Mason 32nd Degree; Ali Ghan Shrine Club; Desert Legion; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Moose Lodge 271; BPO Elk 63, Cumberland; Cumberland Lions Club; and Cumberland Outdoor Club.
He was a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks; a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy; first and past president of the Mid-Atlantic Food Dealers Association; member of Zion United Methodist Church; and an avid supporter of 4-H and Future Farmers of America fairs.
Surviving are one daughter, Sheila Day Scholze and husband Robert Jr., Cumberland; one sister, Shirlie E. Day, Cumberland; one grandson, Aaron Dickson and wife Heather, Cumberland; and one great-granddaughter, Morgan Grace Day Dickson, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Ed Weber, Donald Clark, George Marion, Jeff McNeil, Eric Fleek, and Bob Reed.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Horner, Ken Witmer, Sr., Steve Snoots, Randy Arbogast, Garry Long, and Norman White.
FLOYD C. HETZ
GRANTSVILLE - Floyd Clifford Hetz, 81, of 10660 National Pike, Grantsville, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, at his residence.
Born Oct. 10, 1915, at Cove, he was the son of the late Henry Adam and Marie (Jones) Hetz.
Mr. Hetz was self-employed. He owned and operated Hetz Trailer Sales and Hetz's Place. Mr. Hetz was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, H. Ruth (Weimer) Hetz; three sons, Ronald C. Hetz and Kevin E. Hetz, Grantsville, D. Allen Hetz, Cumberland; three daughters, Janice M. Gauntz, Meyersdale, Pa., Rosalyn R. Dukes, Library, Pa., Barbara J. Miller, Baltimore; one sister, Mabel Clark, Duluth, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 3 p.m. with Pastor Brenda Shreve officiating.
Interment will be in the Grantsville cemetery.

MARIANNA GROSS
CUMBERLAND - Marianna Gross, 87, formerly of Baltimore Pike, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 9, 1910, in Bedford County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Walter Frantz and Nellye (Brotemarkle) Frantz. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Roy L. Gross, on March 2, 1987; and two sisters, Florence Thompson and Julia Kline.
Mrs. Gross was a life member of the Maryland 4-H All Stars and was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret A. Harr and husband Kenneth, Carlisle, Pa.; a half-brother, Charles Frantz and wife Carol, Front Royal, Va.; a sister, Mabel Rose and husband Milton, Bedford, Pa.; a half-sister, Audrey Woodall and husband Don, Cumberland; three grandchldren; and two great-grandchildren.

MARY E. BRAY
SWANTON - Mary Ellen "Gram" Bray, 89, of Swanton, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at the Cuppett Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Sept. 20, 1907, at North Glade, she was a daughter of the late Daniel T. O'Brien and Florence (Barnard) O'Brien. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Umber Wellington Bray, in 1976.
Mrs. Bray was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, and had been a member of the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for 45 years.
Surviving are three sons, Elwood Bray, Baltimore, Lonnie Bray, Kitzmiller, and Roger Bray, Oakland; three daughters, Leota Savage and Betty Wildesen, both of Swanton, and Helen Crummett, Fredericksburg, Va.; one half brother, Glen O'Brien, Swanton; two half sisters, Mona Dalgren, Santa Monica, Calif., and Myrtle Summerville, Dalgren, Ohio; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Hatcher and the Rev. Ellis Harvey officiating.
Interment will be in the Deer Park cemetery.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department.
LEONA E. P. DAWSON
LUKE - Leona E. P. Dawson, 92, of Moran Manor Nursing Home, formerly of 420 Pratt St., Luke, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born Dec. 15, 1904, in Bloomington, she was a daughter of the late John Herbert Price and the late Daisy (Elliott) Price. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Dawson, in 1957; two brothers, Charles and Frank Price; and a sister, Martha Wilcox Kapinski.
Mrs. Dawson was a retired secretary from the Westvaco Corp., Luke. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, W.Va. She was formerly an active bowler in the Devon Club Leagues.
Surviving are one brother, John A. Price, Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Interment will be in the Philos cemetery.
VIVIAN CAREY
FINZEL - Vivian Carey, 74, of Finzel, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 10, 1923, in Finzel, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Mae (Kirk) Burdock. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Carey; one sister, Louise McKenzie; and two brothers, Harry Burdock and Louis "Pete" Burdock.
Mrs. Carey had been employed at the Celanese Corp. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens.
Surviving are one brother, Robert Burdock, Finzel; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jay West officiating.
Interment will be in the Blocher cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Ward III, Charles Bond Jr., Randall Burdock, Daniel Burdock, John Burdock, Todd Burdock and Josh Jenkins.
