ELEANOR V. SNYDER
CUMBERLAND - Eleanor Virginia "Nannie" Snyder, 86, of Old Church Lane, Cumberland, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1910, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Jacob L. and Ada (Evans) Snyder. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, James H., Charles, and Joseph Snyder; three sisters, Audrey Chaney, Madeline Stewart, and Margaret Burton; and one sister-in-law, Gertrude "Gertie" Snyder.

Ms. Snyder was retired from Crystal Laundry, Cumberland.

Surviving are one daughter, Judy Snyder, Cumberland; a special nephew, Jim "Jimbo" L. Snyder and wife Suzie, Cumberland; a special niece, Patti A. Barth and husband Bob, Cumberland; two great-nieces, Allyson Barth and Jolie Snyder; one great-nephew, Bryant Snyder; four sisters, Maxine Squires, Wilda Long, Lula Lease, all of Cumberland, Isabelle Downing, Denton; and other numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. with Deacon Loren L. Mooney officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rick Snyder, Tom Cessna, William Cessna, Todd Appel, Ken Keller and Delbert Perdew.

MELVIN A. SNYDER
FLINTSTONE - Melvin Arnold Snyder, 72, of Flintstone, died Friday, April 25, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 22, 1925, in Ocala, Florida, he was the son of the late Benjamin Holly and Floy Margaret (Jay) Snyder.

Mr. Snyder was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II, where he participated in beach landings under enemy fire in New Guinea, the Netherlands, East Indies, the Philippines, as well as Yokohama, Japan.

Surviving are two sons, Melvin Russell Snyder and wife Susan L., Frederick, Jeffry Scott Snyder and wife Debra L., Harrisburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Aaron Snyder, St. Charles, Missouri, and Emily Jean Snyder, Frederick.

A private interment service will be conducted at Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the Flintstone United Methodist Church.

The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN R. SNYDER
CUMBERLAND - John R. Snyder, 76, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 25, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Raymond J. and Esther L. (Morris) Snyder. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Rhuey E. "Boots" (Robertson) Snyder; one brother, James L. Snyder; and one sister, Betty V. Miller.

Mr. Snyder was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation of America. He served with the US Army Air Corps. during World War II. He was a 1939 graduate of Allegany High School. He received his Bachelor's degree from Frostburg State University in 1953 and his M.E.D. degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1956. Mr. Snyder taught Junior High School in Oldtown from 1953 to 1956. He was Director of Guidance and Counseling at Allegany High School, Cumberland, from 1956 until his retirement in July 1983.

Mr. Snyder was a member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, the Allegany County Retired Teachers Association, the Maryland Retired Teachers Association, retired member of the National Education Association and Maryland State Teachers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Loyal Order of Moose and the Allegany Alumni Association where he served as former vice-president.

Surviving are his wife, Irene (Simmons) Snyder; one daughter, Linda Rae (Snyder) Edmiston, LaVale; one brother, Donald E. Snyder, Groton, Conn.; two granddaughters, Raechelle Elizabeth Edmiston and Jessica Suzanna Edmiston; one step son, Richard Graham, Cumberland; and three step grandsons, Richard, Mace and Scott Graham.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Father Arthur R. Lillicropt officiating.

Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

JOSEPH H. SNYDER
CHESTERTOWN - Joseph H. Snyder, formerly of Cumberland, died of complications from Lymphoma on Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Mr. Snyder retired from the 1st National Bank of Maryland in Cumberland in 1986 where he was vice president and regional consumer credit officer. He worked at the bank for 31 years.

A 1945 graduate of Allegany High School, Mr. Snyder served in the United States Army during World War II. He was the recipient of numerous banking awards, taught at the School of Consumer Banking at the University of Virginia, and taught installment credit courses at Allegany College.

After retiring, Mr. Snyder traveled the United States with his wife, Betty. He settled in Bradenton, Fla., where he resided from 1988 until 1993. He then relocated to Chestertown, where he resided at the time of his death.

Mr. Snyder was a 29-year member of the Elks, and presently a member of Lodge 2474 in Chestertown.

Survivors include his mother, Anna Snyder, LaVale; his wife, Betty, Chestertown; three children, Darleen Aronhalt, Richmond, Va., John Snyder, Gambrills, and Joe Snyder, Bowie; two brothers, Bruce and Larry Snyder, LaVale; numerous nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren, Troy and Tonya Aronhalt, Richmond, and Nikki and Carli Snyder, Gambrills.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 North Centre Street, Cumberland. Reverend Adam Grim will conduct the service.

Flowers can be sent to the church, or the family is requesting that donations be made in Joseph Snyder's name to the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation, 215 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10016-6023; or to the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, Room 1109, 1620 McElderry Street, Baltimore, MD 21205-1911.

LAWRENCE E. SPEELMAN
FREDERICK - Lawrence Edward Speelman, 73, of 8000 Clearfield Road, Frederick, died on Thursday, July 31, 1997, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 1923, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Samuel Edward Speelman and Leona M. (Yarnall) Speelman Cissel.

Mr. Speelman was a graduate of the LaSalle Institute and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1951 and his juris doctor degree from the George Washington University School of Law in 1955. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Following his discharge, he served as a special agent for the Naval Intelligence Service.

Following his admission to the Bar, he served as Clerk to the Montgomery County Commissioners, Deputy County Solicitor for Montgomery County in addition to a private law practice. In 1979, he was appointed the first full-time County Attorney for Frederick County and held that post until his retirement in 1988.

Surviving are his wife Jacqueline (Monroe) Speelman; seven children, Jennifer Anne Green, San Antonio, Texas, John S. Speelman, Poolesville, Brian L. Speelman, Gaithersburg, Mary J. Willett, Urbana, Joan M. Reid, Frederick, Jacqueline A. Speelman, Port Tobacco, and Stephen E. Speelman, Frederick; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Anne (Speelman) Harris, Winchester, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick, on Monday, August 4, with the Rev. J. Kevin Farmer officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 116 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21702.

HELEN G. SPEICHER
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Helen (Glotfelty) Speicher, 79, of 861 Madison St., Harrisonburg, formerly of McHenry and Accident, Md., died Sunday, June 1, 1997, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Augusta County.
Born Aug. 9, 1917, in McHenry, Md., she was a daughter of the late James A. and Nora (Turner) Glotfelty. She also was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Ross Speicher, on Aug. 24, 1984.

Mrs. Speicher was a 1935 graduate of Accident High School, Accident, Md. On July 10, 1938, she married the Rev. William Ross Speicher. She had made her home in Harrisonburg since 1964, and had resided in Augusta County since 1959. She was a member of Price Rotary Senior Citizen's; the Order of the Eastern Star; Life Seekers of Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice; and St. Michael's United Church of Christ, Bridgewater.

Surviving are one daughter, Iva Kathryn Dixon, Verona; one sister, Iva Ruth Knotts, Crellin, Md.; two brothers, Odell Glotfelty, Barton, Md., and Homer Glotfelty, Frostburg, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Lindsey Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Services will be in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Dr. J.D. Glick officiating.

Final rites will be held at the Bear Creek Church of the Brethren, Accident, on Thursday at 2 p.m. with Dr. J.D. Glick officiating.

Interment will follow in the adjacent cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, 80 Maryland Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the Hospice Unit at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
