OSCAR VAN SCHEETZ JR.
FRIENDSVILLE - Oscar K. Van Scheetz, Jr., 75, of 599 Noah Frazee Road, Friendsville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 20, 1922, in Ashland, Pa., he was the son of the late Oscar K. and Minnie (Deach) Van Scheetz.
He is survived by his wife, Freda (Lohr) Van Scheetz; a son, Donald, Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Kathryn Skiratko, Eldersburg; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Van Scheetz was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Friendsville. He served with the 17th Airborne Division in World War II, where he was awarded the bronze star and purple heart medals. He was a retired letter carrier of 32 years from Baltimore. He also was a lifetime member of VFW Post 467, Westminster, a member of the Westminster American Legion, and a past president, zone chairman and secretary/treasurer for 10 years for the Friendsville Lions Club.
Memorial services will be conducted in the Grace Lutheran Church, Friendsville, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn, III, officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund.

MARSHALL B. VAN METER
LILLIAN, Ala. - Marshall Bradley Van Meter, 71, of Lillian, Ala., formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Tuesday, May 6, 1997.
Surviving are his wife Virginia E. Van Meter, Lillian; two daughters, Karen Garyet, and Cynthia Wanner, both of Boulder, Colo.; a sister, Eleanor Chayet, Boston, Mass.; a brother, James Van Meter, Ridgeley, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren.
A private interment service was held in Pine Rest Memorial Park, Foley, on Friday, May 9, 1997.
Memorial services will be held at the Lillian United Methodist Church on Monday, May 12, 1997, at 10 a.m.

AMBROSE W. VANMETER
CUMBERLAND - Ambrose W. VanMeter, 89, of Pershing Drive, Potomac Park, Cumberland, passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 13, 1907, in Petersburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jacob VanMeter and the late Mary (Teeter) VanMeter. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Macey; three sisters, Mary Devine, Margaret Bechtel, and Rose Stark; and three brothers, Ray VanMeter, Amos VanMeter, and Minor Jordan.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. VanMeter was a retired self-employed operator of VanMeter's Beach in Flintstone. He was a past member of the Has Been's, Inc.
Surviving are his wife, Helen (Cosner) VanMeter; three daughters, Betty Burkett and husband Paul, Cumberland, Helen Bastow and husband Bryan, Naples, Fla., and Barbara Reynolds and husband Edward, Cumberland; seven grandchildren, Gary Burkett, Connie Schoenadel, April Reynolds, Joseph Macey, Peggy Shanholtz, Barbara Lease, and Robert Burke; and seven great-grandchildren, Shannon Schoenadel, Heather Schoenadel, Rusty Lease, Erick Lease, Josh Shanholtz, Casey Shanholtz, and Stacey Burkett.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James McMahan officiating.
Interment will be in Glendale cemetery, Flintstone.

FROSTBURG - Arthur A. Valenzano, 83, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of 17217 Porter Road SW, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at the nursing home.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Friday, June 20, 1997, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Arthur F. Valenzano as celebrant.
Interment will be at St. Michael's Parish cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Norman Gaudio, Mark Valenzano, Tony Valenzano, David Mathews, Francis Taccino and Dana Robertson.

ARTHUR A. VALENZANO
FROSTBURG - Arthur A. Valenzano, 83, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of 17217 Porter Road SW, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at the nursing home.
He was the son of the late John and Maria Valenzano. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Valenzano, in 1987; and a sister, Matilda Gaudio, in 1984.
Mr. Valenzano was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was retired from the Celanese Corporation.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, and the Holy Name Society; an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus No. 1442; and a member of Farrady Post No. 24 American Legion.
Surviving are three sons, John J. Valenzano and wife Linda, Salisbury, the Rev. Msgr. Arthur F. Valenzano, pastor at St. John's Parish, Westminster, and Francis R. Valenzano, Eckhart; one brother, Louis J. Valenzano, Eckhart; two sisters, Josephine and Ernestine Valenzano, Eckhart; two grandsons, Anthony and Mark Valenzano, both of Salisbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.

HILDA V. VALENTINE
CUMBERLAND - Hilda V. (Grandma) Valentine, 85, of Allegany County Nursing Home, Cumberland, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1911, in Barton, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Mildred (Sanders) Athey. She also was preceded in death by her husband Lester L. Valentine; one brother, Harold Athey; one sister, Vivian Feaster; and one stepson, William O. Valentine.
Mrs. Valentine was a former employee of Celanese Fibers Corporation of America.
Surviving are one daughter, Lillian (Billie) Cetto, Phoenix, Ariz.; one stepson, Thomas L. Valentine and wife Jackie, Pine Ridge Road, Bedford, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Carol Showalter and husband Dewey, Everett, Pa.; one sister, Mildred Evans, Cumberland; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY L. VALENTINE
CUMBERLAND - Dorothy Lucille (Mortzfeldt) Valentine, 78, of Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland, formerly of Cumberland Manor Apartments, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born April 20, 1919, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Christian Mortzfeldt and Rose (Iames) Mortzfeldt. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Valentine, in 1982.
Mrs. Valentine was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church, AARP, and the Flintstone Burial Association. She worked for many years at Celanese Corp.
Surviving are one son, James William Valentine and wife Mary, Bowling Green; one daughter, Nancy Lagratta and husband Michael, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Vera Rowe and Marion Welty, both of Cumberland; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a very special friend, Doris Stumbaugh, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Leslie officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be John McFarland, Earl Wilson, Herbert May, Robert Shipley, and Gene Street.
