Palmer, Marcia Ann

Marcia Ann Palmer, 59, of McHenry, MD passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013 at her home. She was born in Cambridge on March 25, 1954 and was a daughter of the late Maurice C. Lewis, Jr. and Eugenia Jett Lewis.

Marcia graduated from Saints Peter & Paul High School in Easton class of 1972. She was married to the late Rolland Palmer. In her earlier years, she was employed at Yesteryears, but most of her life she was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting.

Marcia is survived by four sisters Kathryn Seifert and husband Richard of Parsonsburg, Cynthia Love of Cambridge, Linda Eaton of Ridgely and Marcia’s twin sister Nancy Foxwell of Cambridge, two stepsons Todd Palmer and Geoff Palmer, two step daughters Laura Dower and Jennifer Kelly and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Christina Blake officiating. Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Heart Fund, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Coghlan, Evelyn Jean Marie

Evelyn Jean Marie Coghlan, 48, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born in Washington D.C. on April 5, 1965 to Thomas F. and Vivian R. Judge Coghlan, Jr.

Evelyn graduated from North Wood High School in Silver Spring, MD. She enjoyed shopping, watching soap operas, going to lunch with her mother, having family dinner on Sunday nights, and loved to spend time with her family and cats. She was a member of Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church. Evelyn received a pin from Dorchester General Hospital for volunteering 2500 plus hours in the hospitality shop.

Evelyn is survived by her parents, a brother Mike Coghlan, a niece Crystal Coghlan, a nephew Mikie Coghlan, two uncles Glen and Joe Judge and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents Thomas F. and Jean McDonald Coghlan, Sr., formerly of Washington, D.C., and her maternal grandparents Glen and Evelyn Judge formerly of Pine Grove, West Virginia.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at First Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Trice officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St. Alexandria, VA 22311 or Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Backert, Anna M.

Anna M. Backert, 85, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at Manokin Manor Princess Anne. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late James and Agnes Prochniewski Kopinski. Her husband, Bernard A. Backert preceded her in death November 19, 1996.

Mrs. Backert attended St. Francis deSales Catholic Church. Prior to moving to Salisbury, she lived in Blowley's Quarters, Maryland.

She is survived by a daughter, Valerie R. Silk of Salisbury; a son, Richard Backert of Dundalk, MD; four grandchildren: Linda Heim of Salisbury, Jeffery Silk of Yigo, Guam, Kurt Backert of Parkville, MD, and Erich Backert of Dundalk, MD; a sister, Elizabeth Myskiewicz of Virginia; seven great-grandchildren: one niece and one nephew.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 12 PM at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church. Visitation will be Friday evening from 7 to 9 PM at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Eastern Shore Branch, 213 W. Main St., Suite 205, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804.

Crandell, Ivan Wesley

Ivan W. Crandell, Sr., 91, formerly of East New Market and Cambridge, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 11, 1921, he was the son of the late William Wesley Crandell and Mary Edna Fountain Crandell.

On June 12, 1940, he married Aileen Burton Crandell. They were married 67 years until she passed away on October 29, 2007.

Ivan (sometimes affectionately known as "Bud", "Buddy" or "Pop") was devoted to his family as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, Maryland, since 1947, serving on a number of committees throughout the years, and remained an active member until his decline in health. He was affiliated with Nathan’s Furniture Store and Dean's Furniture Store until his retirement. He was a past member of the Cambridge Chapter and the Salisbury Chapter (Peninsulaires) of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Singing in America.

He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Ivan W. Crandell, Jr. and Yoshiko Crandell, of Newport News, Virginia, and Gary L. Crandell and Sonia Cannon Crandell, of Salisbury, Maryland; a grandson, Mike Crandell, of Ogden, Utah; a granddaughter and her husband, Keiko and Richard Dailey, of Hillsboro, Oregon; two grandsons and their wives, Jeffrey L. Crandell and Tiffany, of Redondo Beach, California, and J. Ryan Crandell and Jessica, of Salisbury, Maryland; two great-granddaughters, Erika Dailey and Monica Dailey; a great-grandson, Maddox James Crandell; two brothers and their wives, Donald C. Crandell, Sr. and Sally, and Robert D. Crandell and Jacki; a sister and her husband, Patricia Lee Beitz and Mel; sister-in-laws, Katie Crandell and Martha Lee Crandell; a brother-in-law, Eugene T. Sawyer; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Lee Hubbard and Juanita C. Sawyer; two brothers, Adelbert F. (Wesley) Crandell and William B. Crandell; two sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Travers and Lois Phillips; and six brother-in-laws, Oden Burton, Lehman Burton, Dick Burton, Roland Burton, Phillip Burton and James Phillips.

The family would like to thank all the staff and employees of Somerset Gardens and Golden Gardens assisted living facilities, Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Coastal Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, Maryland 21613, with Pastor Brent Coleman and Pastor Steve Trice officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the East New Market Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Donald Crandell, Jr., Todd Crandell, James Phillips, Brian Burton, Dennis McCollister and Matthew McCollister.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, 501 Glenburn Avenue, Cambridge, Maryland 21613, or Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, Maryland 21802.

Govans, Sr., Jehu N.

Jehu Nicholas Govans, Sr., was one of nine children born to the late Clinton and Clara Govans in Rocks, Md. He gave his life to Christ at the St. James AME Church, Federal Hill, Md., and he received his education in the public school system.

He joined the United States Army where he served honorably during World War II. He settled in Harford County, met and married Bernice Whye. To that union one child was born.

He united with Mt. Calvary UAME Church, Aberdeen, Md., where he has remained since the 1960's.

Bro. Govans was employed by the Harford County Public School System and retired from the Aberdeen High School as head custodian after twenty five years of service.

Over the years, he became an avid fan of baseball and football. He was also an avid collector and boasted an extensive collection of music, coins, generations of family history and of black history. All were neatly and chronologically stored for the benefit of those who will cherish, enjoy and love them for generations to come.

Bro. Govans was predeceased by his parents and all eight siblings.

After a period of many years with bouts of illness, he succumbed at Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, Md. He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife, Bernice Govans, Aberdeen, Md.; son, Jehu N. (Mary) Govans, Jr., West Chester, Pa.; grandchildren Jehu N. Govans III, Troy A. Govans, Lance L. Govans and Tanya D. Govans; great grandchildren Shannon, Charnay, Marquil, Brandon, Kyra and Anthony and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday May 8, 2013 10a.m.-12p.m. at Mt. Calvary U.AM.E. Church, 123 Mt. Calvary Church Road, Aberdeen, MD, where funeral will start at 12p.m. Interment will be in Harford Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, MD immediately following service.

Wallace, Herman E.

Herman E. Wallace, age 68 of Havre de Grace MD went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2013, at VA Maryland Healthcare System, Perry Point MD. Herman was born July 21, 1944 in Bronx, New York, to Daisy Rhem and the late Herbert Gibson.

Herman attended Central High School; he served in the army from August 1965-May 1967. Herman held many jobs in New York he work for Con Edison, AT&T;, Lillian Vernon, and Sax Fifth Avenue. In Maryland he was employed by Sax Fifth Avenue, Rite Aid and Kohl's.

Herman leaves to cherish his devoted Mother Daisy Rhem, son Jerome, Grandson Kenny; sisters Mattie, Veronica (Walter) and Frances; brother Thomas Rhem Jr, (Jazmin); 3 Nieces Gaynelle, Certora and Serena; 3 nephews Aaron, Walter lll and Nathan. He also leaves fond memories to his devoted and faithful friends Danny and Tina, and a host of family and friends.

Herman was preceded in death by his stepfather Thomas Rhem, Sr. and sister Mary Goulbourne.

A memorial service will be held 12p.m. Saturday May 11, 2013 at Bethel Apostolic Church, 21 N. Earlton Road, Havre de Grace, MD.
