Elzey, Gladys Hall Combs

Gladys Hall Combs Elzey, 83, of New Port Richey, FL formerly of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at her son's home. She was born on April 19, 1927 in Fishing Creek and was a daughter of the late Elmer M. and Ellen Phillips Hall.

Mrs. Elzey graduated from Hoopers Island High School class of 1944 where Old Salty's Restaurant is now. She entered and graduated from Cambridge Maryland Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1947. During her working career, she worked as Head Nurse Supervisor 1st floor and LPN instructor at Cambridge Maryland Hospital from 1947 to 1970. She then worked at the Dorchester County Health Department until she retired in 1987. In retirement, she enjoyed shopping, traveling and being with her family. She married the late J. Mack Combs in June of 1948 and divorced in 1956 and married the late Jefferson Lee Elzey in 1958.

She is survived by daughters Gail E. Combs of Cambridge and Deborah Combs Harris and husband Daniel of Ocean City, a son Jefferson W. Elzey of New Port Richey, FL, a grandson James Andrysiak and wife Cathy, a granddaughter Amber Harris, a great grandson Jonathan Jones, Jr., nieces Josephine Taylor, Connie Pyke and Karen Adams, nephews Donald Ruark, Carroll Ruark and William Hall. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Elzey is preceded in death by her sisters Camilla "Minnie" Ruark and Leona "Lee Lee" Newcomb and brothers Irving Hall and Harold Hall.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Faith Baptist Fellowship Building Fund, c/o Shirley Kailianu, 8 Somerset Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Hosier United Methodist Church, c/o Priscilla McGlaughlin, P.O. Box 41, Fishing Creek, MD 21634.

Fleming, L. Louise

L. Louise Fleming, 85 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Thursday September 16, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on November 24, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Edward and Nettie Travers Elliott.

She had attended schools in Cambridge. On November 17, 1944 she was married to G. Ridgeway Fleming, Jr. Mr. Fleming passed away on October 17, 1991. Some years ago she had worked at Woolworth’s in Cambridge. After she was married she was primarily a homemaker. Mrs. Fleming had also raised chickens and sold eggs to several local stores and restaurants, and had also operated Indianbone Antiques on Route 50 for about 10 years. Mrs. Fleming loved animals, enjoyed working with antiques, taking care of her yard and working with her fish pond. She had been in failing health for the past year when she passed away at DGH on Thursday morning.

Survivors include a daughter Sharon F. James and her husband William W. James of Cambridge, one granddaughter Kim James of Cambridge, one grandson William W. James, Jr. of Cambridge and great granddaughter Rebecca Williamson also of Cambridge, several nieces and nephews and one special niece Dottie Travers. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by 28 brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Thomas Paulette, William Paulette, Wayne Paulette, Mark Marshall, Carlton Nabb, Leonard Elliott and Gene Travers. Robert Horseman will be an honorary bearer Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Haring, Donald W. "Stu"

Fire Department

Donald W. "Stu" Haring, 73 of Trappe, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Friday, April 9, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on January 14, 1937, and was a son of the late A. Stuart 'Snuffy� and Doris Wheeler Haring.

He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1955. On February 14, 1960 he was married to the former Patricia Yates. Stu went to work at Dan Garner & Co. in Cambridge at the age of 15. Stu remained with the company for 52 years and owned the business for 20 years, and had retired in 2004. As a young man he played drums and had played in the Baraca Band at Grace United Methodist Church and had also played in several local bands. He had served in the MD Army National Guard Co B 2nd BN 115th Infantry for six years. For several years he had worked part time at Kool Ice & Seafood. He was an Active member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc for 25 years where he had served as Secretary and Treasurer, Vice President and President and had also served as Captain and Lieutenant of Engine Co. 304, and also served as Lieutenant and Captain of the ambulance Corps. In 1983 he was awarded the Fireman of the Year award. Stu was a Life member of Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E. and as well as he was a member of the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. Stu had served on the Trappe Planning & Zoning Commission for several years. He enjoyed gardening as well as fishing. He also looked forward to his trip each year to the Caribbean. Stu had been in failing health for the past several months when he passed away at his home on Friday evening.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Y. Haring of Trappe, one daughter D. Gail Lesser and her husband Jan Lesser of Charlottesville, VA, two grandchildren Ryan S. Lesser and Eric B. Lesser, one sister Judy H. Zemko of Sebring, Florida, one brother Michael L. Haring and his wife Carole W. Haring of Cambridge, one niece Lisa Hanley and two great nieces.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday morning, April 17 at 11:00 AM at Zion United Methodist Church on Locust Street in Cambridge with the Rev. William Davis and the Rev. Nevin Crouse officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601. Pallbearers will be Ryan Lesser, Eric Lesser, Roger Eareckson, Norman Fegel, Richard Hargis, Jan Lesser, Toby Wilson, Tom Wilson and Hank Kamens. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Mahmood Shariff, Tommy Collins, Mark Cropper, Dr. Jeevan Errabolu and Dickie Collins.

Bloodsworth, Malinda R.

Malinda R. Bloodsworth, 80 of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Monday, March 8, 2010. She was born at Bishops Head on July 14, 1929, and was a daughter of the late Bichell and Edna Woodland Ruark.

She attended schools at Bishops Head and graduated from Crapo High School in 1946. She was married to Morris W. Bloodsworth on January 13, 1973. Mr. Bloodsworth passed away on August 2, 2009. Mrs. Bloodsworth worked at Airpax in Cambridge for 25 years until she retired in 1991. She was a member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church at Crocheron, and enjoyed being on the water, fishing and crabbing, gardening as well as reading. Mrs. Bloodsworth had been in failing health for the past year when she passed away on Monday morning.

Survivors include three nieces Candace White and her husband Greg White of Berlin, and Trudi Jones and her husband Don Jones, Jr. of Church Creek, Patti Hall of Ocean Pines and special friends, James and Lena Wallace Fitzhugh and Phillips and Julia Willey. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers Ralph Ruark and Cyril Ruark.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. George W. Wheatley, Jr. and the Rev. Pardee Bramble officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Mary Todd, General Delivery, Crocheron, Maryland 21627 or to St. Thomas United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Phyllis Mills, 1817 Bishops Head Road, Bishops Head, MD 21672. Pallbearers will be Earl Todd, William 'Snooks' Windsor, George L. Murphy, Allan Keene, Reginald Todd and Edwin Todd.

CUBA O. KANE

Cuba O. Kane, 42, departed this life on Friday, April 23, 2004 at her residence in Cambridge.

Born July 12, 1961 she was the daughter of Clementine Dickerson and the late John L. Kane.

She was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County, a graduate of Cambridge South Dorchester High School Class of 1979. For 18 years she was employed at Black & Decker formerly in Easton, MD.

Cuba was a member of the New Revived United Methodist Church, Smithville, MD. She attended bible study, joined the Women's Club and was on the Hospitality Committee. She really loved the Lord.

She was a loving mother, daughter and sister, and above all a true and compassionate friend to all whom she encountered.

In addition to her mother she is survived by a daughter, Necole Kane ( a 2004 graduate of Towson University of which Cuba was so proud); four sisters: Palechia Palmer, Tammy Washington (Ray), Renna McKinney (Jeremiah) and Dominica Bowser (Robert); nine nieces: Constina Thaxton (Cyrano), Pelynda Batson (DaWayne), Sha'Ray and Ray Washington, Sr., Terah and Paul Pinder, Brandon Fooks, Jeremiah and DaRon McKinney; two great nieces: Sheniece and Sha'Bria Batson; a great nephew: Da'Wayne, Jr.; eight aunts: Lovella Harris (Kemp), Berdina Ross (Haymon), Barbara Johnson (Arvel), Elsie Stanley (Harold), Sylvia Kane, Diane Kapper, Rose Kane; four uncles: William Chester, Russell, Andrew and Edwin Kane, and a host of cousins and friends.

A funerals service will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004 1pm at Bethel AME Church with the Rev. Turhan Potter officiating. Interment will follow in Malone Cemetery (Madison).

There will be a viewing one hour prior to the services only.

Lewis, David G.

David G. Lewis, 73 of Cambridge, passed away at Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. He was born at Henry's Crossroad near Vienna, on September 14, 1937, and was a son of the late Russell and Alma Marie Richardson Lewis.

David attended schools in Vienna. On December 17, 1971 he was married to Beatrice Shores. He had worked at the Dorchester Co. Board of Education for 20 years. He started working at the Academy School in Cambridge and was working at Sandy Hill Elementary School when he retired in 1991. He was a member of the Gateway Church of Christ in Mardela. David enjoyed playing guitar and singing at Church and at Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center. He had been in failing health for the past year and passed away suddenly on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include his wife Beatrice M. Lewis of Cambridge, one daughter Molly Lewis of West Hollywood, CA, three step sons James C. Shores and his wife Sharon Shores of Hurlock, Allen G. Shores of Cambridge, Thomas L. Shores and his wife Belinda Shores of Sharptown, one step daughter Edna Mae Goslin and her husband Nelson Goslin of Cambridge. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Renee Cordrey, Allen G. Shores, Jr., Tammy Lynn Lewis, Timothy L. Shores, Scott Shores, Michele Eure and Brandi Fanton, ten great grandchildren Helena Shores, Taylor Cordrey, Nicholas A. Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Timothy Lee Shores, Jr., Caleb Shores, Rebecca Eure, Joseph Eure, IV, Lilah Shores and Charles Price III. He is also survived by one brother Thomas R. Lewis and his wife Angelina Lewis of Washington State, three sisters Estelle Marie Wheeler of Easton, Patricia Annette Wilkerson and her husband Arthur Wilkerson of Vienna and Judith Alma Townsend and her husband Robert Townsend of Salisbury. He was preceded in death by a sister Sylvia Reid.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Mark S. Billiter officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. Pallbearers will be Nelson Goslin, Charles Lewis, Nicholas Lewis and Arthur Fanton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gateway Church of Christ, 25845 Ocean Gateway, Mardela Springs, MD 21837-2122 or to the Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center, 2474 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Willey, Robert H. "Buzzy"
Marines

Robert H. "Buzzy" Willey, Sr., 59 of Cambridge, passed away at the Perry Point Veterans Hospital at Perryville on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on January 3, 1951, and was a son of Cecelia Tobat Willey Adams and the late Robert Edgar Willey.

He was born in Cambridge, and attended schools in South Dorchester as well as in Cambridge. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on February 24, 1970, and was Honorably Discharged on May 4, 1971. On December 28, 1991 he was married to the former Joyce Ann Knauer. Buzzy was employed by Rippons Brothers Seafood at Hoopersville. He enjoyed crabbing, fishing, tonging for oysters and playing with his dog Missy. Buzzy was also an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. He had been in failing health since November when he passed away at the VA Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Ann Willey of Cambridge, two sons Robert H. Willey, Jr. and Christopher A. Willey of Secretary, one granddaughter Marissa Faith Willey, his mother Cecelia Adams of Hoopers Island, his step father Lehman Adams of Hoopers Island, one sister Dawn Townsend and her husband Troy Townsend of Cambridge, two brothers Kevin Willey and his wife Debbie Willey of Cambridge and Donald Willey of Hoopers Island. He is also survived by one niece Carrie Rose and her husband Lee Rose, four nephews Corey Willey and his wife Jessie, Jacob Townsend, Joshua Townsend and Hunter Rose, several aunts, uncles and cousins and his chocolate lab Missy. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his yellow lab Boggy.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Robert Willey, Christopher Willey, Clarence Ruark, John Blake, Chris Halbrook, Howard "Buddy" Bloom and Billy Burton. Honorary bearers will be Kevin Willey, Lehman Adams, Donald Willey, Edward Thomas and Jimmy Simmons.

Smith, Carolyn H.

Carolyn H. Smith, 74 of Cambridge, passed away on Friday January 7, 2011 at the Anchorage Nursing Home in Salisbury. She was born in Baltimore on April 8, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Henry Monroe and Helen Kunkel Shenton.

She attended schools in Baltimore and graduated from Merganthaler Tech High School. On November 8, 1969 she was married to James L. Smith. Mr. Smith passed away on May 25, 2008. Carolyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge and also was a member of the Women’s Christian Association of Delmarva. She had also been active in the Auxiliary of Dorchester General Hospital. Before entering the Anchorage Nursing Home she had lived with her caregiver, Donna Willey in Cambridge. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. George W. Wheatley, Jr. officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, P. O. Box 554, Cambridge, MD 21613 or Dorchester County Humane Society, P. O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
