Baker, Norma P.

Norma P. Baker, 92, of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at William Hill Manor in Easton. She was born in Salisbury on October 6, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Norman U. and Olive Bassett Perdue.

Mrs. Baker attended schools in Wicomico County. She worked with her husband at Nuttle’s Lumber Company but mainly she was a housewife and mother. On May 22, 1937 she married Paul D. Baker. He passed away on February 13, 2003. Mrs. Baker was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She belonged to the Women’s Methodist Christian Association. She also belonged to the Mizpah Bible Class and was very active in the church.

She is survived by a daughter Bonnie Keplinger and husband Tom of Hurlock, four grandchildren William W. Thomas III of Alexandria, VA, Terri Lee Thomas of Salisbury, Ben Keplinger of California and Patti Newberry of Delaware, 8 great grandchildren Hillary Hastings, Phann White, Peter Mom, Rachel Newberry, Nathan Keplinger, Joshua Keplinger, Julia Keplinger and Bethany Keplinger and two great great grandchildren Abigail White and Marcus Ken. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Baker is preceded in death by a sister Gloria Collins.

Pallbearers will be William Thomas III, Terri Thomas, Randall Bradshaw, Harold Carr, Fred Redmer and Hugh Vinson.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, c/o Scott Daniels, 205 Maryland Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Shull, Tripp Ryan

Tripp Ryan Shull, infant son of Jennifer Lane, passed away at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Wednesday May 26, 2010. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday June 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Dorchester Memorial Park with Mr. James Dayton officiating.Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Hurley, Esther M.

Esther M. Hurley, 94, of Cambridge passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born at Maple Dam on September 5, 1915 and was a daughter of the late August G. and Bessie May Windsor Meyer.

Ms. Hurley was raised and attended school in Dorchester County. She had worked for Western Auto and later at Cambridge Office Supply and Airpax. Ms. Hurley also worked as a sitter. She enjoyed painting, sewing and crocheting. She was a lifetime member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, the Women's Guild and the auxiliary at Dorchester General Hospital.

She is survived by four daughters Marilyn Luthy of Cambridge, Phyllis Murphy of Cambridge, Jane Brasure of Salisbury and Jo Ann Bourne of Eldersburg, a son James W. Hurley of Nokomis, FL, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, two sisters Bessie Nield of Severna Park and Mary Moore of Pounding, WV, two brothers Pastor Donald G. Meyer of Laurel, DE and Windsor Meyer of Bridgeville, DE and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ms. Hurley is preceded in death by four sisters Amelia Mills, Sarah Bradshaw, Clara Handy and Dorothy Henry, four brothers Perry F. Meyer, William Alvin Meyer, Phillip Meyer, August M. Meyer and David Meyer.

Pallbearers will be John Luthy III, Mark Luthy, Daniel Luthy, C.R. Murphy, Jr., Dean Brasure, Scott Simmons and Andrew Bourne.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 with Rev. Joan P. Evans and Pastor Donald G. Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Peder, Rebecca R. "Honey"

Rebecca 'Honey' R. Peders, formerly of Robbins, MD and Wrightsville Beach, NC passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital at Edgewood, Kentucky. She was 80 years old, born on March 11, 1930 at Cambridge, MD and was a daughter of the late Alexander B. and Ruby E. Simmons Robbins.

She graduated high school in Robbins, MD. She also graduated from Salisbury State College with a teacher's degree and her first teaching assignment was at Peachblossom Elementary School. Mrs. Peders continued her education in Clinical Psychology at University of Maryland College Park and two more years at Johns Hopkins. Later, Mrs. Peders was the school psychology and reading specialist for Edmonson Heights Elementary School. She retired with 30 years of service in 1986. On May 10, 1952 she married Thorvald S. Peders of Wilmington, NC. He passed away on March 23, 1993. Mrs. Peders was a member of Bounds United Methodist Church and she taught Bible Study at Trinity Bible Church in Severna Park.

She is survived by a son Thorvald S. Peders, Jr. of Laurel, MD, a daughter Teresa C. Sheehan formerly of Wrightsville Beach, NC, three grandchildren Jason Michael Curry, Stacy McEleney and Stephanie Robertson, five great grandchildren Jessica Cummings, Rebecca Daniels, Kyle McEleney, Aidan McEleney and Leah McEleney, three sisters Annabelle Robbins of Cambridge, Jean Murphree of Alexandria, VA, Patricia Juric of Wilmington, NC and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Peders is preceded in death by two sisters Mina Rossy and Crenia Robbins.

Pallbearers will be Thorvald 'Ted' Peders, Jr., Robert 'Bob' Sheehan, Lawrence 'Larry' Fritz, Jason Curry, William 'Bill' Rumbley, Joseph 'Joe' Juric. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Murphree, Charley Lednum, Wayne Harrington, Dennis Miko and Evin Gossin.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Gary Crouch officiating. Interment will follow at Sandy Island Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Bennett, Hannah S.

Hannah S. Bennett, 84 of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Tuesday March 9, 2010. She was born at Mt. Holly on February 14, 1926, and was a daughter of the late William Bain and Florence Spedden Beckwith.

She was raised in the Cambridge area and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1943. She was first married to G. Omro Willey on March 10, 1945. Mr. Willey passed away on March 18, 1974. She was then married to Millard S. Bowman. Mr. Bowman passed away on March 31, 1984. She was later married to Robert Bennett on February 14, 1986. Mr. Bennett passed away on February 1, 1999. Mrs. Bennett spent her entire career in the restaurant business. She began working at Miss Ruby Saulsbury's restaurant as a young teenager. She later owned and operated Willey's Restaurant on Race Street in Cambridge, and also served as the kitchen manager at the Shoals Restaurant from 1967 until it closed several years ago.

Mrs. Bennett was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church at Town Point and had also been an active member of the Women of the Moose of Cambridge Lodge No. 1211. She had made her home with her son on Oyster Shell Point Road since July of 2007, and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center for the past two weeks where she passed away on Tuesday morning.

Survivors include two sons G. Omro Willey, Jr. and his wife Brenda Willey of East New Market and T. Gary Willey and his wife Shelly Willey of Cambridge, three granddaughters Lisa LeCompte, Tammy Robinson and Noel Darling and four grandsons Marc Willey, Omro Willey, Daryl Willey and Josh Willey. She is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, one sister Dorothy B. Nave of Trappe two nieces Patty Tindall and Dianna Short and two nephews Jay Nave and Billy Beckwith. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by two brothers Charles W. Beckwith and William H. Beckwith, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Pam Bockart officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Josh Willey, Daryl Willey, Omro Willey, Randy Willey, Billy Beckwith and Billy Short. Memorial contributions may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church, c/o Susan Meredith, 5413 Town Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Elzey, Calvin

Navy

Calvin Elzey, 70, of Woolford passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at his home. He was born in Dorchester County on April 25, 1940 and was a son of the late Robert L. and Della Wroten Elzey.

Mr. Elzey attended schools in Church Creek and in Cambridge. He served in the U.S. Navy. On October 10, 1964 he married the former Carolyn Rose Wheeler. He worked at Con Agra in Hurlock and retired in 2002. He was an avid reader, liked the History Channel and he loved his pet dog Chin. He was a member of the Choptank Memorial Post #7460 VFW.

He is survived by his wife C. Rose Elzey of Woolford, a daughter Vickie Moore Era of Cambridge, two grandsons T.C. Bradley and wife Della whom he raised of Cambridge and Casey North and wife Amanda of West Virginia, great grandchildren Grace Bradley, Lily Bradley, Taylor Tolley, Madison North and Nicholas North, seven sisters Sallie Crandell of Baltimore, Katie Crandell of Federalsburg, Doris Marshall of Hudson, Lucille Barnes of Woolford, Joyce Horseman of Madison, Brenda Willey of East New Market and Peggy Horseman of Madison and a brother Elwood Elzey of Madison. Besides his parents, Mr. Elzey is preceded in death by a daughter Candy Lee Elzey, two brothers Johnny Elzey and Robert L. "Buddy" Elzey and three sisters Louise Eskridge, Joanne Elzey and Ruth Lankford.

Pallbearers will be T.C. Bradley, Bill Smith, Sammy Horseman, Casey North, Gene Harper, Francis Sparks and Billy Smith.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with his great nephew Rev. Abraham Lankford officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Creighton, Marjorie W.

Marjorie W. Creighton, 90 of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. She was born at Buckneck Farm, near Cambridge, on December 25, 1919, and was a daughter of the late James T. Windsor, Sr. and the late Irene Willey Windsor.

Marjorie graduated from Cambridge High School, and later attended Nursing School at Cambridge Maryland Hospital. She was a lifelong member of Friendship United Methodist Church where she volunteered as organist for more than 30 years. Marjorie had been active in Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary where she served in many ways, especially as a volunteer at the Robin Hood Shop. She was married to R. Hance Creighton in September of 1939. He passed away on March 13, 1983. Marjorie was an accomplished seamstress, loved to read, loved nature, her pets, and her beautiful trees. She was gifted with the ability to be always cheerful, with a positive outlook, and was always able to see the best, to give a helping hand, and extend love wherever she was. Marjorie will be remembered for her happy and loving kind ways, and her cheerful manner by her many friends and family who loved her dearly. She had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge for the past three months where she passed away early Wednesday morning.

Survivors include a daughter Cynthia Gerber of Punta Gorda, Florida, one son Robert H. Creighton, Jr. of Vienna, four grandsons Robert Dean, Steve Dean, Chuck Creighton and Bill Creighton, nine great grandchildren Josh Creighton, Charles Creighton, Chala Creighton, James Creighton, Julia Creighton, Bob Dean, Nick Dean, Ben Dean and Noelle Dean and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a brother Sheldon Windsor and his wife Dorothy Lee Windsor of Aireys. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her grandson James Windsor Dean, and two brothers James T. Windsor, Jr. and William Palmer Windsor.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at the East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.a. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Chuck Creighton, Bill Creighton, Robby Dean, Steve Dean, Josh Creighton and Chuck Creighton. Honorary bearers will be the caregivers who have taken care of her for the past three years Charlotte Willey, Carolyn Newcomb, Edie Finck, Sarah Sheets, Laura Johnson and Brenda Yeatman. Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Robin Hood Shop, 416 High Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Collins, Sr., T. Franklin

T. Franklin Collins, Sr. 89, of Cambridge passed away Sunday August 8, 2010 at William Hill Retirement Community in Easton where he had resided for the past 4 years. Mr. Collins was born on August 9, 1920 in Cambridge and was a son of the late Alfred H. and Ada Phillips Collins.

After graduating from Cambridge High School Class of 1937 he attended the University of Maryland. He returned to Cambridge to join his father in operating Collins Drug Store. He and his wife continued to operate the business until it was purchased by Edgehill Pharmacy in 1964. He married the former Ann Chaffinch Nevius of Trappe, MD. They celebrated 57 years together until her passing on January 14, 1995. Mr. Collins was a past member of the Cambridge Elks Lodge 1272 and the Rescue Fire Company. He and his wife were actively involved in the Cambridge Little League organization. For many years he enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Mr. Collins is survived by two sons Thomas F. Collins Jr. (Fran) of Cambridge and W. Randolph Collins Sr. (Jeri) of N. Ft. Myers, FL., six grandchildren Kent Collins Jr. (June), Stephanie Simmons (John), Andrea Kelly, Lenee Creighton (Jason), Erin Harley (Peter), and W. Randolph Collins Jr., four great-grandchildren Courtney Collins, Jonathan Kelly, Abigail Kelly, and Eloise Harley and his former daughter-in-law Sharon Dean. He also leaves behind his special friend and traveling companion Marie Roe. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother Randolph P. Collins and son Kent N. Collins Sr.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM at Old Trinity Churchyard, Church Creek, MD by the Rev. Walter Reuschling. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. Collins memory to the Richardson Maritime Museum, P.O. Box 1198, Cambridge, MD 21613 of which he was a life member. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Jones, Alfred P. "Al"

Alfred P. "Al" Jones, 58 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Monday February 22, 2010. He was born in Salisbury on January 12, 1952, and was a son of the late Paul and Alberta Stewart Jones.

Al attended schools in Salisbury, and graduated from James M. Bennett High School in 1970. He had enjoyed playing soccer, softball and also enjoyed bowling. Al also attended Chesapeake College. He was a carpenter and had worked in the building supply industry for many years. He had also worked at the Dorchester County Detention Center for Conmed. On September 20, 1980 he was married to the former Patricia Nash. Al was an avid outdoorsmen, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking as well as carving decoys. He was a member of the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Co. Al had been in failing health for the past year, and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for the past week where he passed away on Monday morning.

Survivors include his wife Patricia Nash Jones, of Cambridge, two sons, Thomas C. Tanner III and his wife Crystal Tanner of Cambridge, Joseph R. Tanner Sr. and his wife Krystal Tanner of Cambridge, four grandchildren, Austin, Joey, Derrick and ( baby girl ) Morgan. He is also survived by two brothers, Cecil Jones and his wife Cathie Jones of Laurel, DE and Richard Jones and his wife Judy Jones of Willards and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Annie Mae Johnson.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday evening at 7:30 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the ICU of Dorchester General Hospital, P.O. Box 439, Cambridge, MD 21613.
