Wheeler, Catherine S.

Catherine S. Wheeler, 82, of Cambridge formerly of Linkwood passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at her home. She was born in Baltimore on December 28, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Harry and Clara Belle Johnson Smith.

She graduated from Cambridge High School. On January 4, 1957 she married William R. Wheeler. He passed away on July 8, 1974. Mrs. Wheeler was a switchboard operator for C&P; Telephone Company. Later, she went to work for the Eastern Shore State Hospital as a switchboard operator and then moved to administration. After Mrs. Wheeler retired she worked at the Robin Hood Shop, where she was a manager. She enjoyed crocheting, wordcross puzzles and watching soap operas.

Mrs. Wheeler is survived by three children Debbie Wheeler of Cambridge, Dwayne Wheeler of Linkwood and Michael Wheeler of Magnolia, DE, two grandchildren Christy Wheeler of Washington State and Melissa Wheeler of Magnolia, DE, three great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild, a sister Betty Dennis of Cambridge, a brother Jack Smith of Linkwood and her special caregivers Kemper Cave and Linda Salvo. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Wheeler is preceded in death by two brothers Andrew Phillips and Johnson Phillips.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Jason Bleyer officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to the Robin Hood Shop, 416 High Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Hubbard Sr., John

Air Force

John Hubbard, Sr. 75, of Secretary passed away on Monday, December 6, 2010 at Envoy of Denton. He was born in Cambridge on September 11, 1935 and was a son of the late Norman E. and Martha Louella Phillips Hubbard, Sr.

Mr. Hubbard attended schools in Cambridge. He served in the Army National Guard in the 29th Division, 115th Infantry and he also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal. On February 1, 1957 he married the former Lillian Luvell Lane. She passed away on August 18, 2010. Mr. Hubbard worked for and retired from the City of Cambridge as a maintenance supervisor. Mr. Hubbard was an avid outdoorsman. He was a Boy Scout Master for Troops 777 and 294 both in Cambridge, Troop 754 in East New Market and a member of the American Legion Post 91 for 35 years.

He is survived by a son John Hubbard, Jr. and wife Donna of Hurlock, a daughter Deborah Stephens and husband Virgil of Laurel, DE, three granddaughters Jennifer Frey of Ocean City, Jamie and Ashley Stephens both of Laurel, DE, a sister Mary Lou Hayward of Cambridge, a brother Daniel Hubbard of East New Market and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Hubbard is preceded in death by a daughter Teresa I. Paul, four brothers Norman Hubbard, Jr., William Hubbard, Robert Hubbard, Sr., James Hubbard, Sr. and a sister Sandy Patterson.

Pallbearers will be Jay McKelvey, Robert Stroterhoff, Ronnie McCollister, Terry McCollister, Jody Abbott and Barney Fairall. Honorary pallbearer will be Sam Shelly.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Boy Scout Troop 754, c/o Danny Foster, 3006 Old Route 50, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Willey, Ruth M.

Ruth M. Willey, 81, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Golden Hill on March 9, 1929 and was a daughter of the late Caleb A. and Mary Cousins Simmons.

Mrs. Willey attended schools in Crapo and graduated from Crapo High School class of 1946. On May 1, 1948 she married Raymond D. Willey. He passed away on July 6, 1970. She had worked at Rob Roy, English's and retired from Airpax. Mrs. Willey enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and word find.

She is survived by a daughter Phyllis Lee and husband David of Cambridge, two sons Richard L. Willey of Vienna and Wayne P. Willey and wife Sheila of Cambridge, several grandchildren, several great grandchildren, a sister Elizabeth Dodson of Cambridge, a brother Robert Simmons of Cambridge and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by a son David Willey, a brother John Simmons and four sisters Mary Hollander, Dorothy Belanga, Sara Gootee and Florence Turner.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mullikin, John E.

Army

John E. Mullikin, 76 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Tuesday March 9, 2010. He was born at Easton on November 12, 1933, and was a son of the late John Wheedon and Anna Carroll Mullikin.

He graduated from Havre de Grace High School in 1950. On September 3, 1961 he was married to the former Beverly Parks. Mr. Mullikin served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground and White Sands New Mexico. For many years he had worked as a stock broker and had worked for Folger, Nolan, Fleming & Douglas in Cambridge. He was a member of Choptank Memorial Post # 7460 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Clearview Country Club. Mr. Mullikin enjoyed woodworking and was a skilled cabinet maker. He had enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing chess. He had been in failing health for several years and was a patient at Dorchester General Hospital where he passed away on Tuesday evening.

Survivors include his wife Beverly P. Mullikin of Cambridge, one son Michael P. Mullikin and his wife Christon Mullikin of Easton, two grandchildren Abigail Mullikin of Easton and Kevin Mullikin also of Easton. He is also survived by a brother Phillip Mullikin of Manchester, two sisters Sara Porter of Kentucky and Susan Mullikin of Abingdon and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Joan Reid.

A memorial service will be held at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge on Friday morning at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Drew Gensen officiating. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 415 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201

Todd, S. Edwin

S. Edwin Todd, 69 of Crocheron, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. He was born in Cambridge on March 23, 1941, and was a son of Annabell Robinson Todd and the late William Carroll Todd.

Edwin attended schools in South Dorchester and graduated from South Dorchester High School in 1959. On September 14, 1962 he was married to the former Mary Tall. Edwin was a lifelong waterman who loved his chosen profession and was held in high esteem by his peers for his work ethic and knowledge of the water. He enjoyed working on and maintaining his workboat, the Four Grand and also enjoyed hunting, watching baseball, watching westerns and spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as his chocolate lab Skittles. Edwin was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he had taught Sunday School for several years.

He is survived by his wife Mary T. Todd of Crocheron, three daughters Judy T. Aaron and her husband Steve Aaron of Cambridge, Joyce T. Hyde and husband George Hyde of East New Market and Renee Todd of Wake Forest, NC, four grandchildren Stephen Aaron, Hunter Aaron, Joshua Hyde and Jordan Hyde, his mother Annabell Todd of Crocheron, two cousins Ted Robinson of Woolford and Alene McGlaughlin of Bishops Head. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother William Brian Todd.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Barbara Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Stephen Aaron, Hunter Aaron, Joshua Hyde, Jordan Hyde, Ted Robinson, Dickie Schauber and Melecio Hernandez Granados. Honorary bearers will be Danny Jones, Greg Cusick, Jira McGlaughlin, Eddie McGlaughlin, Earl Todd, Steve Webster and Steve Elliott. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Mary T. LeCompte, Carolyn N.

Carolyn N. LeCompte, 69, of Woolford passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at her home. She was born in New Stanton, PA on July 23, 1941 and was a daughter of the late Milton A. Noon, MD and Lucille Bradshaw Noon.

Carolyn attended New Stanton Elementary and Junior High School and High School at Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, Virginia. She graduated from Goucher College in Towson, where she majored in Spanish and Psychology, and was a member of the school chorus. Carolyn studied piano and voice, and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. She was also interested in genealogy. She enjoyed boating, tennis and horseback riding with her family. She loved flower gardening, and loved to feed and watch her birds and ducks. Carolyn faced her illness with bravery and a resolve to not let it rule her life. She was tireless in her efforts to encourage and cheer her fellow chemo patients. Her participation in clinical trials has helped to forge the way for new therapies and an eventual cure for cancer.

She is survived by her daughter Ellen LeCompte Ferguson and her husband Bart S. Ferguson of Trappe, a son Anthony M. LeCompte and his wife Jennifer A. LeCompte of Woolford, two grandsons Alexander Granville LeCompte and Stephen Joseph LeCompte. She is also survived by a sister Eleanor Noon Triplett and her husband William C. Triplett II of Woolford and two nephews Gordon B. Triplett and his wife Julia Triplett and Edward P. Triplett and his wife Jocelyn Triplett, three great nieces and great nephews Evelyn Triplett, Jack Triplett and Charlotte Triplett and a companion David L. Thomas, Jr. She was preceded in death by the father of her children, Anthony P. "Tony" LeCompte.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Milton United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Interment will be private. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her name to Tate Cancer Center, Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Attn. Delores Davis, Suite 231, 300 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie, MD 21061. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Thomas, Jena M.

Jena M. Thomas, 29, of Town Point passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at her home. She was born in Easton on November 15, 1980 and was a daughter of David C. Thomas, Jr. and Anne Baldwin Thomas.

Jena graduated from Cambridge South Dorchester High School class of 1998. She attended Virginia Wesleyan College and received her Master's Degree in education from Salisbury University. Jena was a teacher at Easton Middle School. She also worked for Jimmy and Sooks Restaurant where she made the homemade desserts. Jena enjoyed boating, fishing, cooking and reading.

She is survived by her parents David C. Thomas, Jr. and Anne Baldwin Thomas of Town Point, a sister Shannon C. Vanderberg and husband Ryan of Seattle, Washington, maternal grandfather Paul R. Hughes of Cambridge, two nieces Madeline Clare Vanderberg and Elizabeth Anne Vanderberg, a nephew Colin Chase Vanderberg, three aunts Nancy T. Fisher of Lewisetta, VA, Betty Osburn of Tappahannock, VA and Helen C. Smith of Reedville, VA, an uncle Rick Hughes of Sarasota, FL, special cousins Samuel C. Fisher of Heathsville, VA, Susan M. Meredith of Cambridge, Bobby Kaye Robinson of Cambridge MD, D. Keith Fisher of Lewisetta, Ann Kramer Osburn of Tappahannock, Elizabeth A. Osburn of Montross, Gordon K. Smith of Richmond and Catherine C. Smith of Reedville . Jena is preceded death by her brother Ryan Chase Thomas and her grandmother Clare Meredith Hughes.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Fisher, Lewis Hardy, Christopher Jansen, Douglas Gray, Thomas Spicer and Keith Fisher.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Antioch United Methodist Church with Rev. Pam Bockart officiating. Interment will follow at the adjoining churchyard. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Antioch United Methodist Church, c/o Susan Meredith 5413 Town Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Hastings, Herbert G.

Herbert G. Hastings, 58 of Cambridge, passed away at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury on Saturday, August 7, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on January 30, 1952 and was a son of Shirley Hubbard Hastings, and the late Otto Burton Hastings.

Herb attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1970. He attended Kirkland Hall and Ocean City College. where he played on the basketball team. He had worked as a lifeguard in Ocean City for many years at the Stardust Motel, and had also operated a hunting guide service and a hunting club. He enjoyed flea markets, going to yard sales and spending time outdoors. Herb had also operated The Wayback Machine, which was an antiques and collectible shop on Route 50 near Cambridge. Playing basketball had been a lifelong passion of his. As a younger man he had also played guitar in several rock and roll bands. Herb also enjoyed primitive woodworking. He had been in failing health for the past year when he passed away on Saturday evening.

Survivors include his mother Shirley Hastings of Cambridge, one sister Donna Tarbutton of Easton, his soul mate and companion Frances Harper of Cambridge, two nieces, Jessica Jones and Sheila Hastings and one nephew Rusty Hastings. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother Burton R. Hastings.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will take place at 11:00 AM Monday at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Pallbearers will be Rusty Hastings, Brandon Hastings, Steve Bloodsworth, Brian Yost, Greg Webster, Dennis Wooten, Jay Bradshaw, John Archer, John Brittingham and Richard Hubbard..

Rogers, Robin L. "Syd"

Robin L. 'Syd' Rogers, 48 of Cambridge, passed away at her home on Saturday, March 20, 2010. She was born in St. Louis, MO on August 30, 1960, and was a daughter of Ada Hogan Paige Segall and the late Sydney Segall.

Robin attended schools in St. Louis and graduated from McCluer High School in Florissant, MO in1978. She also attended Florissant Valley Community College and received her CNA from Hagerstown Community College. Robin also attended classes at Chesapeake College. On August 16, 1980 she was married to Ray M. Rogers. They have made their home in the Cambridge area since 1998. For a number of years she had worked as a nursing assistant. Some years ago she had managed a pizza restaurant in Ohio and had also worked as a cook and a waitress. For several years she had worked as house custodian at the Avalon Theater in Easton. Robin enjoyed drawing, doing cross stitch and taking care of her dogs and cats. One of her favorite titles however was that of Granny Syd. She used to say that being a parent was a wonderful experience, but nothing compared to the joy of being a grandparent. She had been in failing health for the past year when she passed away at her home on Saturday morning.

Survivors include her husband Pastor Ray M. Rogers of Cambridge, one daughter Ruth E. Robbins and her husband Christopher Robbins of Fredericksburg, VA, one son Philip M. Rogers of Cambridge, two grandsons Ty Robbins and Levi Robbins both of Fredericksburg, VA., her mother Ada P. Segall of St. Louis, MO, one sister Pamela Bredenkamp and her husband Paul Bredenkamp of Florissant, MO, one niece Tiffany Folkner and her husband Kevin Folkner of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by a nephew Nicholas Bredenkamp.

A memorial service will be held at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Race Street in Cambridge on Tuesday, April 6 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 777, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
