Windsor, Calvin H.

Calvin H. Windsor, 76, of Crocheron passed away on July 26, 2010 at his home. He was born in Crocheron on July 26, 1934 and was a son of the late Austin and Eulalia Murphy Windsor.

He attended schools in Crocheron. Mr. Windsor was a waterman all of his life. He enjoyed waterfowl hunting.

He survived by his companion Joyce Jones of Crocheron, four brothers Crawford Windsor and wife Mary Lou of Crocheron, Wayne Windsor and wife Sally of Crapo, Eugene Windsor and wife May of Madison and Vaughn Windsor and wife Ann Marie of Toddville, a sister Cleta Pritchett of Crocheron and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Richard Prahl officiating. Interment will be private. Family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, c/o Mary Todd, General Delivery, Crocheron, MD 21627.

Foster, Gloria Jean

G. Jean Foster, 65 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge on Saturday July 17, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on March 3, 1945, and was a daughter of the late Harvey Watson and Rose Spear Gray, Sr.

Jean attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1963. On April 2, 1995 she was married to Danny Foster. She worked at Chung King and Nabisco and later for Hi Tech Plastics. Jean was an officer of Chapter 1084 Women of the Moose for many years, and Mr. Foster currently serving as Governor of Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose. She was stricken suddenly at her home and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital where she passed away.

Survivors include her husband Danny Foster of Cambridge, two sons Chuck Creighton and his wife Laura Creighton of Cambridge, Billy Creighton and Diana Creighton of East New Market, two step sons Mark Foster and his wife Cindy Foster of Trappe and Michael Foster of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren Heather Griep, Danny Martinek, Justin Griep, Chuckie Creighton, Jessica Martinek, Josh Creighton, Brandi Griep, Cassidy Foster, Kelsey Foster, Jimmy Creighton, Julia Creighton and Chayla Creighton, three great grandchildren, Maddox, Ashton and Destini, four sisters Faye Willey and her husband Gerald Willey of Huntingtown, MD, Debbie Baynard and her husband David Baynard of Trappe, Betty Elzey and her husband Jimmy Elzey Linkwood and Tina Walter and her husband Laurence Walter of Cambridge, one brother Harvey W. Gray JR and his wife Cindy Gray of Gaithersburg, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Leona Pritchard.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.a. in Cambridge with the Rev. John Cahall officiating. Interment will take place at the Windy Hill Cemetery in Trappe. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Buddy Lowe, David Weber, Chuckie Creighton, Josh Creighton, Mike Hubbard and Cedric Elliott.

Reed, Virgel B.

Virgel B. Reed, 80 of Linkwood, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Dorchester General Hospital. She was born at Grand Forks, North Dakota on January 10. 1930, and was a daughter of the late William August and Mary Ellan Hogan Bruning.

She attended school in Grand Forks and graduated from High school in 1948. On July 20, 1950 she was married to Wallace W. Reed. Since November of 1976 Mr. & Mrs. Reed have made their home in Linkwood. Mrs. Reed had worked at Lednum's Jewelers in Cambridge for over 30 years.. She was a communicant of St. Mary Refuge of Sinner's Catholic Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Reed was an avid reader. She had been in failing health for the past two months, and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital on Friday evening where she passed away on Saturday.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years Wallace W. Reed of Linkwood, two daughters Deborah Lynn McKay and her husband Darrel McKay of Hannibal, MO, and Jodie Mitchell and her husband Terry Mitchell of Cordova, one son Wallace W. Reed II and his wife Terri Reed of Easton, three grandsons Phillip Edward Mitchell, Jeffrey Alan Mitchell and Kyle William Reed, one great granddaughter Jayden Nicole Mitchell, one sister Elaine Wainio of Minneapolis, MN, one brother Richard Bruning of Minneapolis, MN and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Jack Bruning.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church on Glasgow Street in Cambridge with the Rev. William Lawler officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Phillip E. Mitchell, Jeffrey A. Mitchell, Kyle W. Reed, Jimmy Mitchell, Terry Mitchell and Roger Erickson. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Warfield, John R.

Army

John R. Warfield, 84 of Hudson, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. He was born in Dorchester County on March 14, 1926, and was a son of the late George and Cora Marshall Warfield.

Mr. Warfield attended schools in Dorchester Co. On September 4, 1948 he was married to the former Mary Frances Spedden. He served on the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954, and served in Korea during the Korean War. Mr. Warfield worked primarily as a waterman and also worked as a caretaker of a farm (White Construction Co.) at Castle Haven. He was a member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion. Mr. Warfield enjoyed hunting and baseball. He had been in failing health for several years when he passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center on Friday evening.

Survivors include his wife Mary Frances Warfield of Hudson, one sister Evelyn Hubbard of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a sister in law Della Warfield and two brothers in law Rev. Harold P. Spedden of Wilmington and Maurice F. Spedden of Chester. He was preceded in death three sisters, Florence Thompson, Hazel Condon, Thelma Wittstadt and five brothers Norman Warfield, Medford Warfield, Leonard Warfield, Calvin Warfield and Curtis Warfield

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Pam Bockart officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Calvert Warfield, Ronnie Warfield, Jimmy Condon, George T. Wittstadt, Kenneth Warfield and Raymond Warfield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Spedden United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Carolyn Wright, 507 Gay Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Neck District Fire Co., 945 Cooks Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Smith, Nellie L.

Nellie L. Smith, 90 of Cambridge, passed away at the Caroline Nursing Home in Denton on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on September 5, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Charles and Nellie Riggin Lowe.

She attended schools in Cambridge, and was first married to Emerson Willey. Mr. Willey passed away in February of 1986. She was later married to William S. Smith. Some years ago she had worked for Sheets Flower Shoppe and later for Benedict’s in Cambridge. Mrs. Smith enjoyed working with flowers. She had been in failing health for the past three years and had been at the Caroline Nursing Home for the past 22 months where she passed away on Tuesday morning.

Survivors include her husband William S. Smith of Cambridge and two sons C. Vernon Lowe of Cambridge and Steve Willey, both of Cambridge, one daughter Patricia Van Vorst of Greenwood, DE, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by seven sons, one grandson Stewart Willey, three sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Jayson Bleyer officiating. Interment will follow at the Bucktown Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be Elmer Willey, Doug Cox, Keith Humphrey, Shawn Holland, Paul Willey and Derrick Richardson.

Parker, Jr., W. Allan

W. Allan Parker, Jr., 72 of Moyock, North Carolina, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 20, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on February 16, 1938, and was a son of the late Walter Allan Parker, Sr., and the late Frances Elizabeth Brannock Parker.

Mr. Parker attended schools in Cambridge. On March 1, 1957 he was married to the former Catherine Ann Insley. Some years ago he had worked at Cambridge Wire Cloth, and had also delivered the Baltimore News American. Mr. Parker worked primarily as a waterman and also driven a truck for Wise Oil & Fuel for 15 years. He was a member of the White Haven United Methodist Church in Church Creek, and was also a charter member of the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co. Mr. Parker had made his home in North Carolina since 2003. He had been in failing health for the past four years when he passed away at his home on Wednesday.

Survivors include his wife Catherine Ann Parker of Moyock, NC, one daughter Cheryl Workman and her husband Joseph Workman of Moyock, NC, two sons Richard A. Parker and his wife Lori Parker and Gary P. Parker both of Cambridge, two granddaughters Deanna Davis and Stephanie Morris, two grandsons Patrick Parker and Nathan Workman, two great granddaughter, Katherine Davis and Nicole Parker. He is also survived by a step grandson Steve Workman, three sisters Wanda Parker of Florida, Pat Riggins and her husband Roy Riggins of Delmar, DE and Mary Todd and her husband Keith Todd of East New Market and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 12:00 PM at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Joseph Harmon and the Rev. David Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the White Haven United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Jeanne Ewell, 5134 Paw Paw Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co., P.O. Box 16, Church Creek, MD 21622. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Flemming, Elizabeth Bucklin

Elizabeth Bucklin Flemming, 99, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. She was born in Providence, RI, on March 11, 1911, the daughter of the late Daniel Dailey and Emmaline Cornelia Webb Bucklin.

She received her AB Degree in Economics from Pembroke College (Brown University) in Providence in 1934. On January 1, 1937, she married John Ellsworth Flemming; they celebrated their 65th anniversary on January 1, 2002. Mr. Flemming passed away on January 2, 2002. Mrs. Flemming had been an active volunteer in many community services and was a member of the Junior League of Summit, New Jersey, where she was a long time resident. She had resided on Taylor’s Island, MD, since 2005. Mrs. Flemming enjoyed being a housewife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan F. Kirkpatrick, and her life-partner, John Battista, of Taylor’s Island, MD; a son, John E. Flemming, III, and his wife Valerie, of Green Cove Springs, FL; four grandchildren: Jason M. Kirkpatrick and his wife, Rachel; Elizabeth F. Ricker and her husband, David; Valerie Jill Tsiamis and her husband, Arthur; and David W. Flemming and his wife, Malacie. Mrs. Flemming is also survived by 10 great- grandchildren: Jacob, Kathryn, Brian, Alyssa, Daniel, Yianni, Nikolas, Eleni, Landon, and Jackson.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday May 8, 2010, at Swan Point Cemetery, in Providence, RI. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., in Cambridge, MD.

Rue, Doris Sheets

Doris Sheets Rue, 85, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, May 14, 2010 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. She was born in Baltimore on August 8, 1924 and was a daughter of the late Ray W. Sheets and Mary Elizabeth Robbins Sheets Parks.

She graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1943. On April 7, 1946 she married Woodrow W. Rue. He passed away on August 5, 1989. Mrs. Rue enjoyed collecting antiques.

She is survived by two sons Warren C. Rue and Woodrow W. Rue II and his wife Wendy all of Cambridge, a grandson Woodrow W. Rue III of Cambridge, a brother Raymond Sheets of Cambridge, two sister's Dulcie Thamert of Cambridge and Susie Jefferson of Easton and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Rue is preceded in death by a brother Harold Sheets.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Old Trinity Churchyard with Rev. Ray Rogers officiating. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Travers, Sr., C. Kenneth

C. Kenneth Travers Sr, passed away at the home of his daughter in Leesburg, VA, on Saturday, February 20. His children and family were by his side. Kenneth was born in 1928, and raised in Fishing Creek on Hoopers Island located in southern Dorchester County, Maryland. His life ended as he lived it - uncomplicated, quiet, non-judgmental, peaceful, dignified, and filled with grace.

He was the son of the late Gladys Aaron Travers and Robert Roland Travers, and a beloved father of four sons Ken Travers MD, Roland Travers (deceased), Joe Travers, and John Travers; and two daughters Marianne Travers and Sandy Niese. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He had many dear friends and associates, and will be especially missed by his close companion, Ms Pat Whaples.

A renowned boat builder, and active member of the Chesapeake Bay Antique and Classic Boat Society, Kenny was a great friend and asset to the boating community. He was known for his ability and willingness to mentor others in his trade. He received numerous awards in recognition of his craftsmanship, and was also honored with the Wooden Boat Enthusiast award in 2007. He was active in his community and helped to establish the Hoopers Island Volunteer Fire Company and served as Fire Chief in the early years. He was an active member of the American Legion and the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday afternoon, February 28, at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. at 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, Maryland with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley and the Rev. David Wooten officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather at 2:00 for visitation prior to the service. Private interment will be Monday at Dorchester Memorial Park. Tax deductible donations in memory of Kenneth Travers can be sent to the Hoopers Island Volunteer Fire Company: C/O Rosemary Dean, 2809 Hoopers Island Road, Fishing Creek, MD, 21634.
