Hughes, Mary Ellen B.

Mary Ellen B. Hughes, 86, of Cambridge, passed away early Sunday morning, August 15, 2010 at the Mallard Bay Care Center, where she had resided since February of 2007.

She was born at Waddell's Corner on July 1, 1924 and raised on a farm near Federalsburg. Her parents were the late Leon Dale and Claudia Thomas Bradley. She was a 1941 graduate of Federalsburg High School and attended Kings College in Wilmington, DE for several years in the late 1940's. As a young woman she did secretarial work at several local businesses. Religion has always been a major part of her life, in particular reaching out to children. For many years she conducted "Good News Clubs" around the Eastern Shore and was also employed as a field representative for Child Evangelism Fellowship.

She was married to Sidney Hughes on June 6, 1992 and until his death in August of the same year, she made her home in Seaford, DE. She maintained a home in Heritage Park at East New Market from 1988 until July of 2006, at which time she moved to Hurlock Meadows. In September of 2009 she was honored to be inducted into the "Mallard Bay Hall of Fame".

Mrs. Hughes was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hurlock. She enjoyed photography, crafts, and had some artistic talent, mainly in drawing and pastels.

She is survived by several cousins; Kenny Thomas of Cambridge, John Thomas of Salem, Ann Carol Moore of Naples, FL, Rebecca Tolley of Seaford, DE, Jimmy Harper and William Harper, both of Rhodesdale.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Pastor Don Reynolds and Rev. Tim Merki. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday during the hour preceding the service. Burial will follow in Unity-Washington Cemetery in Hurlock.

Willey, Jr., Linwood E. "Lindy"

Linwood E. “Lindy” Willey, Jr., 63, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, June 4, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. He was born in Cambridge on April 2, 1947 and was a son of the late Linwood E. “Pete” Willey and Blanche English Willey.

Mr. Willey graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1965. He was a marine mechanic, a waterman and later was a welder where he built race cars. He was also a professional race car driver in his early years. On December 17, 1993 he married the former Mary Rogers. He loved NASCAR and the Baltimore Ravens.

He is survived by his wife Mary C. Willey of Cambridge, a daughter Kristy Marie Caronna and husband Michael of Oxford, a son Frank Willey of Trappe, three step daughters Kristy Scheffenacker of Baltimore, Erin Fiore of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Susan Andrews and her husband Brandon of Millersville, four grandchildren Chandler Willey, Biagia Caronna, Andrue Caronna, Adrian Caronna and two step grandsons Christian Andrews and Ajahni Marley.

Pallbearers will be Gregory Harrell, Brandon Andrews, Michael Caronna, Bruce Burns, Douglas Rogers and Frank Willey.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Dorchester County Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Darius King Heart Foundation, 4725 Newtown Blvd., Owings Mills, Maryland 21117.

Travers, Michael

Michael Travers, 75 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. He was born at Fishing Creek on May 14, 1934, and was a son of the late William Vernon and Alice Pauline Creighton Travers.

He attended schools at Hoopers Island. As a young man he had worked as a waterman trot lining and oystering. Mr. Travers later worked at the Eastern Shore State Hospital for 16 years in the Maintenance Department until he retired on July 1, 1999. After that he had worked part time at Simmons Center Market and also at Terrapin Fish House at Fishing Creek. On May 6, 1979 he was married to the former Beverly Ann Handley. He was a lifelong member of Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose, and was also a former member of the Sons of the American Legion, and had also been a member of the Dorchester Co. Democratic Club. Mr. Travers loved the water and enjoyed getting together with his family and friends. He had been in failing health since October and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for two weeks when he passed away on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include his wife Beverly G. Travers of Cambridge, one step daughter Deborah C. Whitaker and her husband Chip Whitaker of Centreville, three step sons David Handley, Jr. and his wife Darlene Handley of Trappe, Daniel P. Handley and his special friend Yvonne Habliston of Princess Anne and Douglas E. Handley and his wife Joanne Handley of Baltimore, nine step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters Faye Williams and her husband Ronnie Williams of Salisbury, Peggy Cannon and her husband Timmie Cannon of Cambridge and Bonnie Fitzhugh of Cambridge, one brother Calvin Travers and wife Joane Travers of Fishing Creek, one God son Jay Jones of Cambridge and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Ruth Travers, Leroy Travers, William Travers, Jr., Betty Hiser, Doris Parks and Olive Truitt, and one step son William D. 'Billy' Handley.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM at Grace United Methodist Church on Race Street in Cambridge with the Rev. Jay A. Hurley and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will take place at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Pallbearers will be Brad Walters, Rick Travers, Jr., Ryan Travers, Rob Travers, Randy Travers, Ricky Fitzhugh, Eddie Morris and Wally Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be David Handley, Jr., Daniel P. Handley, Douglas E. Handley, Chip Whitaker, Ricky Travers, Sr., Russell Hibble, Wendell Travers, Douglas Walters, Milton 'Joe' Truitt, Jr, Justin Todd and William Fitzhugh, Sr. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Priscilla McGlaughlin, P.O. Box 41, Fishing Creek, MD 21634.

Layton, Sr., Joseph H.

Army

Joseph Haddaway Layton, Sr., 91 of Salem, formerly of Mardela, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born at Salem on October 19, 1918, and was a son of the late William Haddaway and Bessie Neal Layton.

Mr. Layton attended Ravenwood School. He was first married to Alison Tooth Layton during World War II. She died in 1994. In March of 1972 he married Iris Bennett Stant Layton who died in 2004. Mr. Layton served in the U.S. Army in WW II and was stationed in England and fought in France, Belgium and Germany and had served under General Bradley in the Third Armored Division of the First Army, and fought during the Battle of the Bulge. While serving in France he was wounded and had received a purple heart. Mr. Layton had worked at a diner in New York for about a year and a half after WW II. He then moved back to Salem where he had been engaged in farming for over 60 years and was the founder of Lazy Day Farms. Some years ago he had received an award for having the most yield farming corn in the state of Maryland. Mr. Layton was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Hurlock American Legion, Dorchester Co. Farm Bureau, Tidewater Farm Bureau, Honorary Kentucky Colonels and the Westside Historical Society. Mr. Layton enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing bingo and traveling, and had traveled to all 50 states. He had been in failing health for the past two years when he passed away on Wednesday evening.

Survivors include four daughters Sylvia Bradley of Laurel, DE, Claudia Hudson of Mardela Springs, Carol Robinson and her husband Willis Robinson of Sharptown and Frances Hearthway and her husband Ed Hearthway of Salisbury and one son Joseph H. Layton, Jr. and his wife Laura Layton of Salem, nine grandchildren Leslie Quillin, Tania Reeder, Kim Wheatley, Phillip Robinson, Bradley Hudson, William Layton, Susan Conner, Stan Bradley and Kelli Lewis and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters Clara McKnett of Cambridge, Louise Norris of Cambridge and one brother Ollie Layton of East New Market and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Walter Layton and a sister Hilda Willey.

A funeral service will be held on Monday morning at 11:00 AM at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at the Mardela Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Pallbearers will be William Layton, Phil Robinson, Stan Bradley, Bradley Hudson, Nathan Conner, Dave Reeder, Mark Quillin, Jason Lewis and Hank Wheatley. Memorial contributions may be made to Westside Historical Society P.O. Box 194, Mardela Springs, MD 21837 or to the Mardela High School Athletic Dept., 24940 Delmar Rd, Mardela, Springs, MD 21837. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Pohl, William B. "Bill"

William B. "Bill" Pohl, 72, of Easton passed away on Friday, August 13, 2010 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was born in Cambridge on January 16, 1938 and was a son of the late Henry Pohl and Louise Burton Wolf.

Mr. Pohl graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1957. He worked for E.I. DuPont in Seaford where he retired. He was married to the former Mary Collins. Mr. Pohl enjoyed cutting grass around the neighborhood. He was a past member of the Easton YMCA.

He is survived by his wife Mary L. Pohl of Easton, three brothers Morris Pohl and family of East New Market, Frank Pohl and family of Cambridge and Randy Pohl and family of Cambridge, two sisters Kendra Nichols and family of East New Market and Betty Willey and family of Cambridge, sister in law and brother in law Huey and Sharon Erskine III and family of Easton and a aunt Mildred Booze of Cambridge. Besides his parents, Mr. Pohl is preceded in death by his stepmother Margaret Pohl.

Pallbearers will be Frank Pohl, Stephen Pohl, Doug Erskine, Huey Erskine IV, Morris Pohl, George Paugh and Kevin Pohl.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the First Wesleyan Church, 620 Goldsborough Street in Easton with Rev. Dustin E. Ives officiating. Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Mowbray, Mary I. "Belle"

Mary Isabelle "Belle" Wilkinson Mowbray, 95, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Aberdeen, MD on September 9, 1915 and was a daughter of the late Irvin Webster Fulmer Wilkinson and Laura May Street Wilkinson.

Mrs. Mowbray was raised and attended primary schools in Aberdeen, MD and later attended Cambridge High School after the family moved to Cambridge in 1930. She was an outstanding athlete in school and a star player on the 1933 Cambridge High School basketball team. In 1936 she went to work for Phillips Packing Company as a secretary at the main office. She also worked for several years as a beauty shop inspector for the State of Maryland. But, she spent many years as a housewife devoted to raising her three children. On March 16, 1935 in New Jersey she married the former Cambridge Mayor, Calvin Wray Mowbray, Sr. He passed away on July 5, 1988. She enjoyed the YMCA swim group in her later years. Mrs. Mowbray was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Crescent Class and the Ruth Stewart Circle. She also received her 50 year membership certificate from the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron, in December of 1992, a member of Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, Dorchester Historical Society and the Cambridge young homemakers.

She is survived by two sons Calvin Wray Mowbray, Jr. of Westminster and William W. Mowbray of Cambridge, a daughter Janet Belle Redifer of Willards, two granddaughters Donna Neal of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Becky Jo Dalfonso of Willards, four great grandchildren Belinda Sawyer of Newark, MD, Christopher Sawyer of Cambridge, Austin and Megan Dalfonso both of Willards. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Mowbray is preceded in death by a sister Ethel May Esch and five brothers Edwin Wilkinson, Louis Wilkinson, Alan Wilkinson, Irvin Wilkinson and Roy Wilkinson.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Lloyd, Dora L.

Dora L. Lloyd, 85, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Springdale on November 3, 1924 and was a daughter of the late William and Emma Diskau Krueger.

Mrs. Lloyd attended schools in East New Market. On June 12, 1951 she married Irving H. Lloyd, Jr. He passed away on December 3, 1981. Mrs. Lloyd worked at Airpax until she retired in 1984. She attended Our Shepherd Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughter Katherine Denault and husband Donald Denault, Jr. of Delmar, MD, two grandsons Michael L. Jones and wife Ashley of Cambridge and Christopher A. Denault of Delmar, MD, two great grandchildren Alexander and Zachary Jones, a sister Marie Morgan of Wilmington, DE and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Lloyd is preceded in death by a brother Carl Krueger, a sister Katherine Koppleman and two aunts Frieda Gould and Alma Leonard.

Pallbearers will be family members.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Major Lori Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to The Children's House at Johns Hopkins, 1915 McElderry Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.

Bowers, George D.

George D. Bowers, 63, of Federalsburg passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. He was born in Dundalk on October 9, 1946 and was a son of the late Samuel O. and Georgia Conrad Bowers.

Mr. Bowers attended school in Crapo. He was a waterman. He enjoyed the wild life, animals, crabbing and fishing.

He is survived by three brothers James O. Bowers of New York, Samuel T. Bowers of Pasadena and William David Bowers of Salisbury, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Mr. Bowers is preceded in death by six sisters Doris May Ziggler, Kathleen Rauf, Evelyn Cramer, Myrtle Riggins, Ruth Willey and Ella Draper, two brothers Richard Bowers and John Bowers.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A in Cambridge with Rev. David J. Wooten, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m.
