Reid, Sylvia Gray

Sylvia Gray Reid, 86 of East New Market, passed away at her home on Wednesday August 11, 2010 with her loved ones around her. She was born in Crossroads on September 16, 1923, and was a daughter of the late Russell and Alma Richardson Lewis.

She attended schools in Vienna and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1940 of Vienna High School. In 1941 she was married to Joshua Clayton Gray. Mr. Gray passed away on July 14, 1948. For a number of years she stayed at home with her children and was involved in youth activities such as Girl Scouts, 4-H, MYF and Youth Choir. She had been very involved at the Vienna United Methodist Church, where she was organist and later had been involved at the East New Market United Methodist Church. In 1956 she went to work at Leggett’s Department Store and worked her way up to assistant manager. Sylvia later became the first woman manager in the Leggett’s Department Stores of Maryland and Virginia.

Sylvia had been very active in the American Legion Post 91 and the South Eastern Shore District. She had held many offices in the Legion including Department President of Maryland for 1994-1995, and she had also held office on the National level. She had been in failing health for several months when she passed away at her home on Wednesday evening.

She is survived by two daughters Carolyn Gray O’Connor of Cambridge and Suzanne Jean Gray of East New Market, three grandchildren Denise Parks Travis of Hamburg, PA, Michael Thomas O’Connor and his wife Lori O’Connor of Cambridge and Monica O’Connor Link and her husband William James Link, Jr. of Baltimore. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren Shannon Nicole Brown and her companion James Dean Truitt of Rhodesdale, Corey Joshua Travis of Rhodesdale, Jessica Noele Travis of Hamburg, PA, Sean Patrick O’Connor of Cambridge, Aiden Matthew O’Connor of Cambridge, Meghan Elizabeth O’Connor of Cambridge and William James Link III of Baltimore, two brothers Thomas R. Lewis and his wife Angelina Lewis of Washington State, David G. Lewis and his wife Beatrice Lewis of Cambridge, three sisters Estell Marie Wheller of Easton, Patricia Annette Wilkerson and her husband Arthur Wilkerson of Vienna and Judith Alma Townsend and her husband Robert Townsend of Salisbury and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her longtime companion Wilber Leroy VanSant who passed away on March 18, 2005.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. and also during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Pallbearers will be Corey Travis, Jimmy Truitt, Michael O’Connor, Sean O’Connor, Jim Link and Ronald Pickel. Honorary Bearers will be Aiden O’Connor and L.J. Link.

Shorter, Carlton R.

Carlton R. Shorter, Sr., 81 of Golden Hill, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Thursday March 4, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on September 12, 1928, and was a son of the late Thurman M. and Margaret Meredith Shorter.

He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945. On December 14, 1951 he was married to the former Mildred Gootee. As a young man he had worked on the family farm on Maple Dam Road, and had worked in the family sawmill business. He had worked at Cambridge wire Cloth for over 40 years and had retired in 1990. Mr. Shorter was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he had served as Treasurer and Trustee. Mr. Shorter was a former member of the Church Creek Vol. Fire Co. He had enjoyed gardening, hunting, wood working and making crafts. Mr. Shorter had been in failing health since November and had been Hospitalize for four weeks and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center since Saturday where he passed away on Thursday morning.

Survivors include his wife Mildred M. Shorter of Golden Hill, one daughter Bonnie H. Marshall and her husband Nelson Marshall of Golden Hill, one son Carlton R. 'Ricky' Shorter, Jr. and his wife Dawn of Town Point, three grandchildren Scot Marshall of Los Angeles, CA, Daniel Shorter and Eric Shorter both of Town Point and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter Mary Beth Marshall, his step mother Rena Shorter, one brother Thurman Shorter, two sisters Eleanor Smith and Doris Wheatley.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at St. John's United Methodist Church at Golden Hill with the Rev. Gary Crouch officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining churchyard. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Doris K. Lewis, 3347 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, MD 21622. Pallbearers will be Eric Shorter, Daniel Shorter, Scot Marshall, Duane Paul, Billy Gootee and Henry Gootee. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Bramble, Theodore L. "Teddy"

Theodore L. “Teddy” Bramble, 72, of Woolford passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at his home. He was born in Cambridge on June 4, 1938 and was a son of the late Solomon F. and Mary Lois Bramble.

He graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1957. Mr. Bramble was a school bus contractor for Dorchester County for 30 years and was a driver for 52 years. He also was owner/operator of numerous restaurants around Cambridge. Mr. Bramble also did some construction work and some farming. On February 25, 1968 he married the former Donna Robbins. He liked the New York Yankees and riding his motorcycle. He served as a Dorchester County Commissioner from 1974 until 1978. He also served as president of the Roads Board for Dorchester County. Mr. Bramble was a member of Milton United Methodist Church, past president of the Dorchester County School Bus Contractor Association and past president of the Dorchester County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the Cambridge Lodge #1272 B.P.O.E. Elks, the Cambridge Moose Lodge and the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company. He was a past member Dorchester County Election Board and Draft Board.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Donna R. Bramble of Woolford, a son Edwin L. Bramble and wife Ruth of Woolford, a daughter Robin Linthicum and husband Charles “Bo” Linthicum of Cambridge, 7 grandchildren Jon Linthicum, Steven Linthicum, Catherine Linthicum, Nathan Linthicum, Douglas Bramble, Eddie Bramble and Chris Bramble, a sister Joyce Balderson and husband James of Woolford, a brother Solomon F. Bramble, Jr. and wife Mary Ann of Kill Devil Hills, NC and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jon Linthicum, Steven Linthicum, Catherine Linthicum, Nathan Linthicum, Douglas Bramble, Eddie Bramble, Chris Bramble, Charles “Bo” Linthicum, Jason Coffman and Steve Mills, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Milton United Methodist Church in Woolford with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge and from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the Milton United Methodist Church, c/o Charles Block, P.O. Box 106, Woolford, MD 21677.

Parker, Sr., Dr. Arthur S.

Army

Dr. Arthur S. Parker, Sr., 91 of Cambridge, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. He was born at East New Market on September 19, 1919, and was a son of the late Harry Elza and Lucy Wright Parker.

He graduated from East New Market High School in 1936. On May 9, 1937 he was married to the former Norma Hurley. He then attended and graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis in 1939. Dr. Parker also did post graduate work at the National Chiropractic College in Chicago and graduated in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 17, 1942, and attended OCS Prep School. He was commissioned on February 24, 1943 and served on active duty until May 24, 1946, after attaining the rank of Captain. Dr. Parker had also served in the Army Reserve until November 15, 1955. Dr. Parker was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge, where he had served on the Board of Stewards. He was a Past Commander for Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion, Past Dorchester Area Commander, Past Commander of the Drum and Bugle Corps and Past President of the Cambridge Exchange Club. Dr. Parker was a former member of Choptank Lodge No. 138 A.F. & A.M., and Past Patron of Mizpah Chapter # 51, O.E.S. He had been a certified Red Cross Instructor for many years, Cambridge City Commissioner from 1960 until 1964, serving as President of the City Council. Dr. Parker had his own Chiropractic practice in Cambridge from 1939 until he retired in 1966. Dr. Parker later worked as a Supervisor at the Dorchester Co. Office of the State Dept. of Assessments & Taxation, and had worked throughout the state of Maryland from November 14, 1966 until he retired on January 1, 1984. Dr. Parker had been in failing health for several months when he passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Sunday evening.

Survivors include his wife Norma H. Parker of Cambridge, one son Dr. Arthur S. Parker, Jr. of Bel Air, MD, a sister in law Madeline Parker of Cambridge, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister Lucy Parker Nichols and two brothers Harry E. Parker, Jr. and Brooks W. Parker, Sr.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon December 29 at 12:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Jay Hurley officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613. Pallbearers will be Larry Jones, Dennis McCollister, Donald L. Nickerson, Dale Carrier, Brooks Parker, Jr. and George Richard Doty. Honorary pallbearers will be C. Ray Pritchett and Tony Alexander.

Hurley, S. Virginia

S. Virginia Hurley, 93 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. She was born in Talbot County on July 21, 1916, and was a daughter of the late Howard Lee and Clara Elizabeth Skipper Coleman.

She attended schools in Talbot County. On June 25, 1938 she was married to William Luther Hurley, Jr. Mr. Hurley passed away on October 22, 1991. Mrs. Hurley was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Hurley had been a Den Mother for Boy Scout Troop 294 at St. Paul's Church, and was also a Past President of the Mizpah Class at St. Paul's and she had also taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Hurley had been involved with the Flower Fair at St. Paul's for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and reading, especially reading the Bible. Mrs. Hurley had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center for the past three years, and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday morning where she passed away.

Survivors include a daughter Sharon L. Shorter and her husband Luther B. Shorter of Cambridge, a son Vernon L. Hurley and his wife Teresa Hurley of Cambridge, three grandchildren Jason Shorter of Cambridge, Jenson Shorter of Secretary and Christina Brault of Cambridge, two step grandchildren Thomas R. Hurley, Jr. and Kimmeth L. Hurley. Mrs. Hurley is also survived by six great grandchildren J.J. Shorter, Eric L. Shorter, Alex D. Shorter, MaKenna E. Shorter, Rebecca C. Brault and Matthew J. Brault. She is also survived by a sister Rebecca Cheezum of Cambridge and two brothers William Coleman of Washington, D.C. and Elmer Coleman of Rockton, Illinois and several nieces. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter Virginia R. Hurley, a son W. Howard Hurley and a grandson Howard L. Hurley, two sisters Clara and Etta Bainbridge and seven brothers Earl Coleman, Howard Coleman, Charles Coleman, James Coleman, Johnny Coleman, Leonard Coleman and Carroll Coleman.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Upper Bambury Cemetery in Trappe. The family will receive friends during the hour before the service. Pallbearers will be Jason Shorter, Jenson Shorter, J.J. Shorter, Danny Shorter and Ricky Shorter. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Scott Daniels, 205 Maryland Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Bishop, Sr., James M.

Navy

James Martin Bishop, Sr. a resident of Glen Burnie and formerly of Cambridge passed away on November 7, 2010 of natural causes.

He was born July 5, 1928 in Sharptown to the late Harold Thomas Bishop and Mary Elizabeth Mumford. Jim was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in the Navy in June 1944 at Bainbridge Naval Training Center at the age of 16. He served in the 7th Fleet in the Atlantic and also in the 16th Fleet in the Pacific until his discharge in July 1946. That year, he returned home to Mardela Springs where he met Mary Katherine Collins, known as Kitty, his future wife of sixty four years.

Jim worked in the Automotive Industry most of his adult life. First, as a salesman and later he became the Director of Audits for the Department of Motor Vehicle Administration. He was recognized as a leader who promoted people regardless of their race or nationality. Jim sometimes known as "Duke" to his friends enjoyed many hobbies: boating, fishing, raising horses, traveling and his tools.

He is survived by two daughters Phyllis Ball (Mickey) of Salisbury, Kathy Bishop (Raymond Meyer) of Kent Island as well as three sons James M. Bishop Jr. of Cambridge, William D.H. Bishop of Glen Burnie and David A. Bishop (Ruth) of Linthicum Heights and a sister Mary Willoughby (Neal) of Cambridge.

Relatives and Friends may call at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge on Thursday, November 11, 2010. A viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the service starting at 2 p.m. Interment immediately following at Mardela Springs Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or any charity of your choice.

Price, Florence C.

Florence C. Price, 88, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 at her home. She was born in Baltimore on June 18, 1921 and was a daughter of the late Jesse and Catherine Connor Lehman.

Mrs. Price attended and graduated schools in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore Business College. On August 12, 1945 she was married to Edward A. Price. He passed away on January 30, 1999. In earlier years she was a beautician and later was a homemaker. Mrs. Price was a very devoted wife and mother. She was an avid reader and loved the beach. Mrs. Price volunteered in the community and was a member of the Dorchester General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by three sons, Ronald E. Price of Cambridge, W. Douglas Price of Baltimore and Richard M. "Rick" Price and his wife Cheryl of Hurlock, a sister-in-law Helen Dawson of Cambridge and two special nieces, Harriett Hall and Dorothy Saul and their families. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Price is preceded in death by two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Secretary with Celebrants Stephen C. Lonek and Michael T. Casari officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, near Hurlock. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home P.A. in Cambridge.

Simmons, Howard B. "Butch"

Fire Department

Howard B. “Butch” Simmons, 67 of East New Market, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Monday, August 9, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on August 6, 1943, and was a son of the late Lawrence Fletcher and Angeline Wolff Simmons.

He attended Academy School in Cambridge and elementary School in East New Market and graduated from North Dorchester High School in 1961. Butch had worked at Preston Trucking Co. for 17 years and also for Trinity Transport for 7 years, later with Glacier Refrigerated Services. He also worked for Service Tire Truck Center until he retired on September 1, 2009. On April 28, 2001 he was married to the former Julie Ann Dail. She passed away on May 15, 2009. Butch had been an active member of the East New Market Vol. Fire Co. for 49 years. He had attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in East New Market. Butch had been in failing health for the past year and had been at the Mallard Bay Care Center for about a month when he passed away on Monday.

Survivors include a son Richard L. Simmons and his companion Amanda Willoughby of Federalsburg, two step daughters Denise Lauck of East New Market and Donna Abbott of Cambridge, two grandchildren Eric W. Simmons and Amy Simmons, one great grandson Eric William Simmons, Jr., two sisters Susan Dodson and her husband Sonny of Cambridge, Elizabeth Carey of Lewes, DE and one brother Lawrence F. Simmons, Jr. of California. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a five brothers John Simmons, W.F. Simmons, William R. Simmons, George D. Simmons and Thomas W. Simmons and one sister Laura Cater.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Lloyd Massey officiating. Interment will follow at the East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday and also during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the East New Market Fire Co., P.O. Box 280, East New Market, MD 21631. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Phillips, Donald Cheesman, Sonny Dodson, John Rickwood, Richard Gauen and Eric W. Simmons.
