Reeves, Martha V.

Early on the morning of August 14, Martha Virginia Reeves departed this life after a lengthy illness. Martha was born in Baltimore County to Raymond Ruff Sr. and Marthea Davis-Ruff on the 9th of July 1922. She was the second oldest of four siblings. Raymond Ruff, Jr., (deceased 2009), Richard A. Ruff, Sr., (deceased 1985) and Hasty Ruff.

Martha left Bel Air, Maryland at a young age to return at seventeen to care for her brothers and sister. She lived in Bel Air until she met her life's companion, Zelma W. Reeves, Sr. at Ames UME Church. They were married August 15, 1943 and shared sixty seven years, shy one day, together. Six children (four survived to adulthood) were the product of their union.

Martha was a loving, gentle, humble, kind and giving person. She was a devoted mother and wife who loved the Lord and demonstrated that love in all that she did. Her gifts were many. She had a sweet soprano voice that she used in service for the Lord. As a dedicated member of the Sanctuary Choir at Clarks United Methodist Church, it was a privilege for her to serve until her health required her to step down. She was also a faithful member of the United Methodist Women . Martha was a "Master Cook." Her desserts were coveted, especially her lemon meringue pie.

Martha wrestled with diabetes for sixty one years; yet she never complained. She kept on pushing. She never said "why me" but always said "God has been good to me." She has left her family a legacy of strength and her example is truly one to follow.

The life of Martha V. Reeves, the wonderful women she was cannot be described in the limited space allotted for this program. Those of us that had the privilege to know her; that loved her and have been blessed by her Christian example will never forget her. Her unflinching faith in her God, her ability to forgive the seemingly unforgivable and the grace she would extend to those who wounded her could only come from an intimate relationship with Christ.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband and care giver Zelma W. Reeves, Sr., children Zelma W. Reeves, Jr. Baltimore, MD., Pastor Richard A. Reeves, Sr. and wife Sheryl, Coatesville, PA., and Deborah N. Reeves, Baltimore, MD. She was preceded in death by her son Paul W. Reeves and two infant sons. Sister, Hasty L. Ruff, Aberdeen, MD., Brother-in-law, Lynn Reeves & wife Lucy, Reading, Pa, Sister-in-law Dorothea Reeves, Lancaster, PA. Sister-in-law Myrtle Christmas-Ruff, Churchville, MD.; six grandchildren who cherished their "Granny" and nine great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins who hold a deep love and admiration for their Aunt and Cousin Martha.

Viewing will be held Friday August 20, 2010, 10a.m.-11:00a.m.with funeral starting at 11 a.m. at Clarks United Methodist Church, 2001 Kalmia Road, Bel Air, MD. Burial will be in Clarks United Methodist Cemetery, Bel Air, MD.
