May, Violet M.
Violet May was born March 11, 1948 to the late Frances Marie May. She departed her life on March 22, 2010 at Union Hospital, Elkton, MD.
She attended and worked at Bayside Adult Center for over 20 years. Violet loved money, puzzles and stickers, books, traveling and shopping. She also loved people, all people.
Violet is survived by five sisters, Nola Earl, Lisa Hackle, Beverly Brown, Doris Briscoe and Olive Turner; one uncle, Rev. James Matthews, Sr.; two aunts, Althea Matthews and Jennie Matthews; one brother in law Tommy Hackle; one god daughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.
She was preceded in death by four brother, three sisters and two uncles.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday March 27, 2010 at Abundant Life Worship Center, 250 Booth St., Elkton, MD. Viewing held 11a.m.-1:00p.m. at the church. Burial will be private.
Terrell, Mary L.
Mary L. Terrell, age 89, of Elkton, MD, departed this life December 29, 2010.
Services will be held 12 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Christ Unity Center, Inc., 1150 Singerly Road, Elkton, MD where friends may call starting at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Bohemia Manor Cemetery, Chesapeake City, MD.
Henderson, Ida Mae
IDA MAE HENDERSON was born on January 19, 1915 to the late John and Leanna "Annie" Taylor Coleman in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
Ida Mae received her formal education at Havre de Grace Colored School. At an early age her Christian training began at St. James A.M.E. where she attended with her mother Annie, younger Sister Mary and baby brother William (Corkhead). She later converted to Catholicism.
In the late 1930's Ida Mae moved to East Orange, New Jersey where she worked as a laboratory technician for 30 years at RCA. Upon her retirement, she became an avid bridge player traveling around the county to compete in tournaments. A lively conservationist Ida Mae would paint vivid pictures of her adventurous shopping sprees to Bergdorf and Macy's that always concluded at the Estee Lauders counter. She believed the key to living a long happy life was remaining active so she took full advantage of all trips to Atlantic City.
Earlier this month after a brief hospitalization Ida Mae relocated to Havre de Grace to be closer to family. On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, Ida slipped peacefully away in her sleep at home with her loved ones.
She leaves to cherish her memories; Mary's son, John Coleman, William's five sons and six daughters, numerous cousins, especially Bernadine "Bunny" Hill, as well as extended family and friends.
Ida Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leon, sister, Mary Coleman Webster(Winfield), brother William (Eloise) and nephew Ronald Coleman.
A memorial service will be held 6:00p.m. Monday March 29, 2010 at Lisa Scott Funeral Home, 552 Lewis Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be private.
Goodman, Lenna A.
Lena Ann (Smith) Goodman was born September 12, 1961, to Gloria M. Smith and the late John W. Smith. She departed this earth on April 1, 2010, in Baltimore, MD following a brief illness. Lena received her primary and secondary education in Harford County Public Schools and graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1979. Continuing her quest for higher learning, she attended Harford Community College and received an Associates of Art Degree in Office Education in 1985, followed by a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications and Management from the University of Maryland in 1996.
Lena was employed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) from 1984 -2000 and held various positions in the areas of administration, public affairs, and technical writing. She was the recipient of a number of awards and commendations as a result of her excellent job performance. Thereafter, she was employed with a range of temporary agencies providing services in human resources, office management, and administrative assistance. Beginning in 2005 and until shortly before her passing, Lena was employed as a Substitute Teacher for Harford County Public Schools and taught grades Pre-K through fifth. Because of her outstanding performance in the classroom, she was often specifically requested by teachers at Havre de Grace Elementary School to instruct in their absence.
Lena attended St. Matthew AUMP Church during her youth and later joined Helping Hands Ministries. She transferred her membership to Gospel Tabernacle in 2008 and was a faithful and active member of the congregation there. She was a member of the Combined Choir; Assistant Secretary of Women's Purity; Assistant Editor of the newsletter The Good News; and attended Bible Class and Sunday School regularly. Lena loved her church family and often spoke about how happy and fulfilled she was since becoming a member.
Lena was an avid reader and favored literature that served to enhance her both spiritually and professionally - - always seeking to improve herself and impart knowledge to those along the way. To expand her speaking skills, Lena joined the Susquehanna Toastmasters Club, while at APG, and was elected President of the Chapter in 1997. In addition to her love of reading, journalism, public speaking, and shopping, Lena had a passion for cooking and enjoyed making special dishes for her family and church family.
Lena had a deep love of people and has touched many lives with the warmth of her sweet smile and mentoring spirit. Always the champion for the underdog, she extended her hand on many occasions to give back and support others in their time of need. She was truly devoted to God, her family, her church, and her special fellowship support group.
Lena was predeceased by her father John W. Smith in 2003. She leaves to cherish her memory: mother, Gloria Smith of Havre de Grace; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Carl Wilkinson of Aberdeen; brother, Michael Stokes of Edgewood; nieces, Khalilah Wilkinson of Columbia and Jada Wilkinson of Havre de Grace; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.
Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday April 8, 2010 at Gospel Tabernacle Church, 330 Superior Street, Havre de Grace, MD where family and friends may call starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. James United Cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.
Greene, Sr., James L.
James Leroy Greene, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday June 15, 2010. Jim a he was affectionately known by his friends, was born in Harford County, Maryland the oldest child of Dorothy Mae Pitt.
Jim graduated from Central Consolidated School in Hickory in 1963. On April 20, 1974 he married Constance. He was employed with Safeway Food Stores for over 31 years mostly in the produce department. During his later years at Safeway his love for produce encouraged him to start his own lawn care service. He worked the business with his wife until his son James Jr. joined them. Jim worked his family business until his health began to slow him down just a few years ago. His son James Jr. has picked up his father's work ethic and has continued to make his father's business strong. After attending Boston University and living there for 10 years, Christina returned home to be with her ailing father and join the family business also.
Jim leaves to mourn, his wife, Constance; a son, James Jr.; two daughters, Christina & Crystal Greene; a daughter-in-law, Alysia Greene; II. Grand daughter, Nevaeh Greene; a step father, Ralph Pitt; sixteen brothers & sisters; two aunts, France Orange & Thelma Bond; one uncle, Lawrence Orange; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
Jim spent his last moments with his loving wife and his precious granddaughter. Although it made be hard for us all to say goodbye to Jim, the consolation we may have is the peaceful smile and calm on his lovely face ... knowing he is resting and joyful now with the Lord.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday June 19, 2010 at New Hope Baptist Church, 116 Alice Ann Street, Bel Air, MD. Burial will be private.
Christy, James W.
James Walter Christy, of Havre de Grace, Maryland passed away on June 16, 2010 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center, at age 70.
James Walter Christy was born November 1, 1939 in Havre de Grace, MD to the late Walter and Sarah Christy, he was the 8th of nine children.
James Walter Christy attended Havre de Grace Consolidated High School where he earned his Diploma in 1959. During his life he lived in Camden and Newark, New Jersey and Havre de grace, MD. He was the life of the party anywhere that he went. He loved to dress and dance. He also loved to fish. In 1996 he joined St. James A.M.E. Church in Havre de Grace, MD under the leadership and guidance of Rev. Franklin J. West.
James Walter Christy affectionately known to many of his friends and family as "JIM" is survived by one son, James W. Christy Jr.; four sisters, Mary Woodson, Havre de Grace, MD, Catherine Campbell, Detroit, MI, Frances Dorman, Havre de Grace, MD, Margaret Pauline Woods, Camden, NJ; one brother, Robert Christy, Havre de Grace, MD; one brother in law, Howard Jackson Jr.; three grandchildren James III of Killeen, TX, Chene Christy of Aberdeen, MD and Marquan Christy of Massachusetts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was TRULY LOVED.
James Walter Christy was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Marlene Jackson, Grace Christy and Viola Christy.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m. Tuesday June 22, 2010 at St. James A.M.E. Church, 615 Green Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be private.
Johnson, Lena M.
Lena Mae (Smith) Johnson, age 82 of Darlington, MD departed this life Tuesday April 27, 2010 at her residence.
Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010 at St. James U.A.M.E. Church, 3345 Cedar Church Road, Darlington, MD where family and friends may call starting at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in St. James U.A.M.E. Cemetery, Darlington MD.
Williams, Jr., Charles Henry
Charles Henry Williams, Jr. age 56 was born July 17, 1953. He departed this life suddenly June 24, 2010.
He graduated from Aberdeen High School. Then he joined the United States Navy, where he retired after serving 20 years.
He is preceded in death by his father Charles Henry Williams, Sr, mother Gwendolyn G. Brown, brother, Lawerence L. Ringgold, sisters Cynthia Henry, Dinetta Rumsey and brother, David M. Williams.
He leaves to cherish his memory, sisters and brothers, Deborah L. Bond, Brian and Anthony Williams, Evetta Richardson, Evette and Nikki Williams; sister in law Dorothy Williams; godson Chinel Jones, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Charles will be laid to rest at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
