Maye, Joe

Joe Maye was born August 2, 1942, to the late Ted Maye and Aggie Dee Mixon in Georgiana, AL. He departed this life at home surrounded by his wife, Quinsanna, and his loving family on December 5, 2010 in Aberdeen, MD.

Joe, affectionately known as Mr. Joe and Pop-Pop, received his early education at Mt. Zion Jr. High School in AL. He relocated to Maryland and began a rewarding career in construction and concrete pipe fabrication. He worked for Lock Joint, Price Brothers and Old Castle corporations for over thirty years before retiring in August 2008. Even in retirement he continued to rise early and set about a purposeful day working on his car, lawn, or mentoring his son-in-laws and grandchildren.

Joe was scheduled to get baptized at an early age, but suffered the loss of his mother the night before his baptism. Later, as an adult, he was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in 2007 at Gospel Tabernacle First Apostolic Faith Church under the leadership of Bishop Harry Lee.

Joe is best remembered for his caring nature, magnetic personality, and "don't sweat the small stuff" approach to dealing with challenging situations. He could often be found drinking a cup of coffee and reminiscing about the good old days with anyone visiting the house, in McDonald's or passing his way. He cherished his Alabama roots and prior to his illness drove with "Anna" back to Georgiana to visit with his family.

From the moment he learned of his failing health, Joe held fast to the goal of "living a little longer" and committed to doing whatever it took to win the battle against cancer. When asked how he was feeling, Joe routinely responded, "I feel pretty good, " and never complained during his illness. He left us all in awe as he made it a point to thank each person for their acts of kindness, show of concern, and prayerful intercession on his behalf.

Joe leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Quinsanna; son, Curtis (Detroit) and daughter, Alice Marie (Detroit); daughters, Tonya (Sanford) Fisher and Katina Maye, children, Cynthia Lilly, Connell Lilly, Curtis Lilly, Stephainrey (Scott) Edwards; sisters, Ester M-Cheatheam and Barbara Jean Woods (AL), and brother Cleve Smith (AL); one nephew, Terrell Cheatheam (AZ); eight grandchildren, Nikki, LeeLee, Jay (Cocoa), Kia, Shana, Dey, Raekwon, and Tommy and two great grandchildren, Tyj and Mia (Little Momma); life-long friends Carolyn Johnson and Frank Gandy, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held Saturday December 11, 2010 10a.m.-12p.m. at Gospel Tabernacle Church, 330 Superior Street, Havre de Grace, MD, where funeral will start at 12p.m. Burial will be at Berkley Cemetery, Darlington, MD.
